Dunta Is Good For Something?
No, I'm not crazy nor have I had way too much of the special eggnog.
Reported on by houstontexans.com, Dunta donated $25,000 to the Texans YMCA Capital Fund.
"I got fined early in the year, and this was a way to make that into a positive one by taking the fine money and doing something good with it," Robinson said. "It's going to change some lives. Putting $25,000 in here is going to open up a lot of opportunities for these kids, so it's a blessing." - Dunta Robinson
Yup, he did get fined. Remember why? Needless to say, Dunta, according to the article/interview, talked owner Bob McNair, GM Richard Smith, and coach Gary Kubiak into turning the fine into a donation to the Texans YMCA. You can also look at this as Dunta giving money back that he didn't earn. I'll gladly rip the guy on Sundays for blowing coverage and whiffing on tackles, but I'll applaud him for turning his boneheaded move into one that positively contributes to a good cause. So for the first time in 2009, I applaud you, Dunta.
If you haven't had your fill of Dunta then here's a video interview.
PS: I hate FanShots, so I had to write something more about it. I also felt like good news, especially concerning Dunta, doesn't get reported nearly enough.
EDIT: According to the Chronicle, Dunta also gave two families gifts of $5,000 each to end a very charitable day. On a football note (something that I don't think anyone realizes), the article also notes that only one WR has gotten a 100 yard game on the Texans: Chad Ochocinco. It also notes that Dunta's first choice for a 2010 team is: The Houston Texans.

Good show, Dunta.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
good for dunta...
can we get him to pay 25K for every pass interference?

Everybody makes mistakes. I am willing to believe Dunta is still a good person even if he let money go to his head.
Apparently he has his own foundation
And held his first youth football camp in May.
His mistakes aside, it’s nice to see him invest in Houston like this.
Fair is fair
I’ve been one of the charter members of the Fuck Dunta club but when someone does something like this, the honorable thing to do is to acknowledge it.
So, Dunta: my hat’s off to you for your kind heart and your humanitarian spirit. Your football career will only last for a small part of your life and what you do outside the lines is more important anyway. Thank you for taking the time to help out those less fortunate than you.

That's all swell.
But Solomon’s article was just disgusting.
He assumes that the ill-will towards Dunta is completely based on his contract-negotiation antics. Yet he tries to defend his play this season with one-sided, phony statistics and portrays him as one of the better players on this defense.
He says Dunta hasn’t given up many long completions this season. Well, that tends to happen when you give receivers a ten-yard cushion on every play or grab them for PI call whenever they blow by you. It’s difficult to gauge CB play on paper, but the most relevant CB ratings based on stats reveal that he is one of the worst starting CBs in football.
I usually like Solomon, but he needs to get over his love affair with Dunta and Okoye and start calling them out when they under-perform. It’s really killing his credibility.

Re: Solomon
Couldn’t agree more. I’m a fan of Solomon’s, but today’s article was so absurd that I found myself getting angry as I read it. Trying to paint Dunta as anything but below average on the field this season is nuts.

Solomon's article definitely was interesting
While it’s true that only Chad Ochocinco has been the only WR (emphasis on WR as opposed to CJ, Dallas Clark, or Vernon Davis) to go over 100 on the Texans, it doesn’t give any numbers on those WRs going against Dunta or how many missed tackles or even his penalty numbers (which are about 8 or 9 I believe).
Respectfully disagree
The “charitable” contribution that Dunta made, was the fine money he received for his “PayMeRick” shoe statement. It’s money that was going to (or had) been withheld from one of his 600k paychecks. The franchise allowed him to pick the charity to choose to donate this to. It wasn’t an Ebeenezer moment to offer this to a worthy cause from the $10 million he’s extorted from the Texans.
The two $5k donations for those families was very thoughtful and will bring joy to them during these rough economic times and should be applauded. Not to be/sound like the “Scrooge” but, these are also tax deductions/breaks for their own cause. However, any donation to a worthy cause is something to applaud and I applaud that. I applaud the man/woman who puts their loose change in the kettle for the Salvation Army cause they give hope to families in need and will even buy a homeless drunk a cup of coffee and a cot to lay their head on. (Mark 12:41-44)
Totally agree.
Also, he does deserve credit for the $5,000 he donated to two families.
But, he is no Andre Johnson.
Don't ALL those fines go to charity?
What a GREAT guy. He gets fined and then masquerades as though he is donating the money when it is really the FO donating. What D-Bag should have done was donate both the fine and an additional (and ACTUAL) donation of $25,000. Which would equal a whole half of one percent of the money he has made this year.

Horseshit
He’s been awful — literally, AWFUL — and I’m not willing to play the “oh, he’s a nice guy, so we should bring him back” card as justification for Dunta stankin’ up the place in 2010. Solomon’s article was what an abortion would look like if you could put in it words. Dunta needs to go away, quickly, and never come back.
I don’t disagree with tGC, but that doesn’t change my vote at all. Fuck Dunta to death with an AIDS-covered cactus.
Yay, sports.

Yes.
This has nothing to do with football. He has been horrible. I just didn’t feel like dwelling on it at this time.

The only way I’d even take him back is if it came on the cheap and as the #2 or 3. Maybe.
He’s only allowed 400ish yards and 3 TDs thrown on him….so he can at least cover. The 8 penalties are brutal, but fixable if he worked on technique.
However, I’m sure he’s viewing himself as a #1 and looking for a good contract….so Bush Airport is that way, here’s a ticket to Kansas City or Detroit or Cleveland.
fixable by technique
I would agree if the penalties were not him blatantly grabbing the receiver to avoid giving up a long bomb or td. If it was him actually trying to defend the ball that would be one thing. Again his 400 yards could very well be 600 with far more TDs if he doesn’t grab those receivers. As a 2 or 3 making almost nothing maybe I would want him back, but I don’t know if I would be comfortable with him as more then the nickle.
As a 2 or 3 (maybe)
He’s not taking on the Ochocincos or Reggie Waynes or Sims-Walkers or other #1s that he has taken this year.
If you have him on a 2 or 3 while working with him on technique, I think there’s something salvagable there. Even giving up 600 yards is only 45 a game…and I’d take that when covering a 1.
That said, he’s not a #1 corner and shouldn’t be paid as such. I think he sees it otherwise which is why I wouldn’t want him back.
Technique can't replace speed.
And he’s what, a sixth-year pro? He’s learned all the technique he’s going to learn.
