egh...

is it bad if im not even upset? i just kinda expect it now?

Some people say "If you can't beat them, join them". I say "If you can't beat them, beat them", because they will be expecting you to join them, so you will have the element of surprise.

Pathetic.

Our players actually made plays up until that stupid HB pass call. I officially rescind wanting Kubiak back next year, there is just no excuse for that. None.

It would be less than classless for me to add anything at this point

I wanted very badly for Kubiak to succeed. Ironically it appears now that even 9-7 may snag the WC2. What a pity. This team has the talent to play with any team in the league, and has demonstrated that several times this year. At the same time they are exasperatingly inconsistent. Goes directly to leadership, or lack thereof.

It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

9-7?

I wonder what the mathematical chances are that the Texans would get to 9-7 and still qualify over other 9-7 teams. We know they would lose out to the Jags and NY Jets, so they have to finish worse. Who else? The Ravens, Steelers, Broncos, Titans, and Dolphins. It’s a fact. The Texans are not eliminated, yet, with four games remaining and needing to win all of them to get to 9-7 while hoping to bypass all but one of the above teams.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

crap

2. it was a play they’d practiced
3. Brown got hit from the side while he threw it. (for some reason, people are thinking he MEANT to throw it where the ball went)
4. Were it LT, the coaches would’ve been praised for trying a very effective play.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

by beefy on Dec 7, 2009 11:30 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But it wasn’t LT. It was Chris Brown. Yes the design of the play was good, but there was absolutely no reason to run it at that point in the game. Taking the ball out of Schaubs hands at that point is criminal.

by nolander on Dec 7, 2009 11:37 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Agree to disagree on the play call.

If anything, that’s the PERFECT time for that call.
Consider the facts that we cannot run inside, especially around the goalline, and that teams know this. So, our best shot at running it is an outside run or sweep, yes? You give the player an option to try to run it, or if it’s open (as it so was) throw it. He just threw it a millisecond too late, and got hit.

I’ll ask this… When else in other games do you see this play called? Becuase I only see it called in position we were in.
I know I have absolutely no hope of changing anyone’s mind on this, but I needed to get it out there, just in case someone else thought the same.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

by beefy on Dec 7, 2009 11:44 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I thought the same thing.

You can tell me to “get off beefy’s dick” and i’ll say “dont know it till you try it”

Im not agreeing with beefy because he makes a good point, im agreeing with him because i had the same thoughts about the play. It was a perfect time to call a HB pass. It caught their secondary off guard to the point that Dressen(still not sure who it is) was WIDE OPEN in the endzone.

How else where we gonna get to the endzone? By punching it in? Remember the last game against the jags? Chris Brown fumble? Anyone? We have no way of punching it in because we dont have the right personnel for it. It was a shortened field, the endzone would’ve been crowded.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 11:55 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You say, "Consider the facts that we cannot run inside, especially around the goalline, and that teams know this."

But in fact, Chris brown did exactly that on Matt Schaubs return drive to the game. He ran it right up their gut for a TD.

So while the play was an honest attempt by Kubes to be creative and catch them off-gaurd; was Chris Brown the guy you want making that play?

I just think he hs failed in critical situation too often to be trusted with that.

The Perfect Play Call?

Look, I can understand your arguments here. I’m glad that they are thinking outside of the box a little bit. I’m glad the play was drawn up extremely well.

But down 11, with the ball on the 5 and needing two scores, you can’t take the chance of running a gadget play that has a high chance for a turnover, especially on first down. I don’t care how great it looked in practice. I would’ve thought that was a terrible play call even if it HAD worked. If they were up 10? Fine.

Didn't say the perfect play call.

I said it’s the perfect time to call that play, if you’re going to call it. Plays that don’t work don’t make it into the playbook.
We needed a touchdown, yes? I thought you scored touchdowns by getting the ball across the goalline, which is what they were trying to do.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

Fretting

Ah okay, I suppose I misread you then.

Not that I wanted the Texans to be downright passive in the red zone, but 3+8 still equals 11. You just can’t take that chance inside the 5, the one place where even Kris Brown probably can’t miss a FG. By all means, if you want to throw a WR screen, or run the shotgun with an empty backfield. I’m fine with that. I know we can’t really run the ball. Hell, at that point we probably couldn’t even sneak the ball due to Schaub’s shoulder.

But you can find lower-risk plays with a solid chance of fooling someone in that situation. Not a gamble I’d be prepared to take as a coach.

flawed logic

personnel, personnel, personnel.

We now know not to throw (any pass play) with Rex at QB, and not to throw a HB pass with Chris Brown. If we got LT, it magically wouldn’t be a bad call. But with Chris Brown, it is a bad call.

Would you, if you were Kubes, try it in the same situation this weekend? I’m guessing he won’t. So, according to all the people that think it was a good call, then its the perfect time to try it again.

This play pissed me the hell off.

If I was on the sidelines, I wouldve cut both of Chris Brown’s Achilles Tendon myself.
But you can’t blame this on the coaches. It’s not like they never ran the play ever before. They practiced it during the week. Im pretty sure that there were times that it wasn’t successful and that Kubiak told Brown what to do if he wasn’t able to make the pass. This was all on Chris Brown people. I understand most of the complaints about the poor coaching and I agree to some of them, but this is an example of poor execution by a player and he should be burned into ashes for it. You’re letting your “Fire Kubiak” feelings creep into your brain too much to the point that you attribute everything to poor coaching.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 11:46 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, the announcers did nothing to help this.

They didn’t even bother pointing out in the replay that the TE was wide ass open, or that Brown got hit. If you didn’t figure these things out on your own, you had every right to be mad. That upsets me even more, though… that fans can’t see these things on their own, and get all “torch and pitchfork” yelling and screaming about it.

The fact that Brown got hit as he was throwing is a strong indicator that he probably shouldn’t have been throwing it.

It was Kubiak's Idea.

And I dont know who designed the play, whether it was Kubes or Baby Shan but it was a beautiful play. It served it’s purpose. Catch the secondary off guard and allow Dressen to slip through the secondary wide open. It’s not Kubiak’s fault that Chris Brown got hit the minute he threw or that Chris Brown decided to throw the ball anyway and not just take the loss.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 1:26 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

How about

lobbing it up to….. I don’t know, maybe the best receiver in the game. Or try and get Casey the ball if you want to go some other route. Or the PA roll out and throw to Leach which usually seems to work. A million other plays from the 5 yard line could have been called. It was bad from the stand point of being called and bad from the point of execution.

And don't you think that the Jags

are aware that we have the best receiver in the game and that we would try to go to him with the ball. That was the perfect play. Everybody jags player thought it was a run and if it wasn’t for Leach and White missing the block, it would’ve been a touchdown.

This is exactly why I was hesitant about throwing it out there...

People have already made up their mind about Kubiak needing to be fired or stay, as well as their thoughts about this play. To think that anyone is going to change that thinking is futility at best.
They cannot and will not be objective.

by beefy on Dec 7, 2009 2:24 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

It's not a vendetta

it’s just grown old and tiring. The HB pass didn’t make we want to get rid of Kubes. Also, this isn’t all his fault, the players aren’t doing anything to help him. The reason for wanting change is 1) Not be able to compete in our division -ever. 2) Still, after 8 years we don’t have a winning season 3)No shot at even a WC spot. If we can’t compete in our own division (currently in last place even though we are supposedly progressing as a team) the only thing we will ever get a shot at is a WC. I’m not grinding an axe I’m just sick of the same ole same ole and it’s not ok anymore. Change it all up. Get rid of players and coaches. Trade or cut bait with the guys that don’t perform. We are going to have to face it one way or another, things need to change and this organization needs a complete restructuring. You can try and deny it another season if you want but that’s just how it is.

Confucius says "man who stands on toilet, high on pot".

by Bobobigbro on Dec 7, 2009 2:31 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not denying anything...

You’re right – our record in the division sucks. That is something that no one can debate. What IS up for debate is, why?
Several of us are fairly positive that it’s because we lack even mediocre talent at CB, NT, G, C, and basically every backup spot on the team.
So, sure… It was nice to come into this year, thinking that the few spots that we had good talent (DE, LB, WR, QB, RB, and yes I’ll say it… coaching) were good enough to overcome the bad. Let’s line things up, shall we?
The bags of asses at G and C negated any positives at RB and coaching, meaning the offense that’s predicated on the run, wouldn’t ever be able to look quite right (granted though, the QB and WR strengths kept the train on the tracks between the 20’s) – The shit at NT negated strengths at LB, and – Dick at CB negated our DE’s. Add all that up with the dookie that we have as our backups at almost every roster spot, and you have what we are presently.
Now, the reason I doubt the objectivity of most commenters here is that I don’t feel any of the issues I’ve outlined are being considered in their analysis. They just showed up here angry, and the first comment they read was either a) there was absolutely no reson for that playcall, or b) Kubes needs to go. Then mob-mentality takes over, and again, no one even considers the reasons. It’s far easier to say Fire Kubes than to think, it would seem.
It’s like I said, I know I won’t change a single person’s mind with this, but I also know there are others out there that share my thoughts, but might be too scared of the axe-grinders to voice it.

I agree with everything you said regarding the players and lack thereof and or weaknesses as a team. I think we look at it pretty much the same I guess I’m just in the mind set now that it won’t change and until we do something to shake it up or change it, it will just be more of the same. And trust me, it took me a while to get to the point to want Kubes gone and I really do like the guy but the players aren’t responding to him even if he is a good coach and that tells me you need to change things up or we will have another year just like the last 3. I know the team likes him but they seem to have become complacent under him and I don’t know what caused it or how they can get out of it.

It takes a man to admit...

that they agree with me! Thanks, Bobo.
What I’m wondering is, what did you expect to happen throughout this year, when you know that the talent isn’t good enough? We got extremely lucky with Barber, but type of guys aren’t just out there, waiting for Kubes and Smith to find them. I mean, if it’s just one or two spots, the staff could maybe call plays to hide those guys, but when it’s nearly every position, it’s gonna be tough sledding all year long. Most people wonder how we can find silver linings in losses, and the only way we can is by keeping in mind that we shouldn’t even be close in many of these games, due to the holes in talent.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

All that said...

I’m willing to give them one more year to fix those holes, because they’ve done pretty well with many of our other ones. I don’t want anyone to write off anything I say as being a Kubiak fanboy, but to not consider these things isn’t being fair.

by beefy on Dec 7, 2009 3:21 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I take it

you meant to say Pollard not Barber??? I guess I expected us to be a team at least capable of being competitive. During our 3 game win streak I thought I was finally starting to see my expectations of this team starting to happen. Then we reel of 4 losses in a row even after how we started off the season. If we hadn’t lucked out and won that game against the Tits we would really be in bad shape and I hate to use that becasue I hate it when people say we could easily be 10-2 or some number around there. If that would have happened we would have been swept by every team in our division. We blamed Ike for our 0-4 start last year and this year we are really close to being 4-8 and I think that is what we have become. I almost think we have lost a step this year and I don’t want to say that because I like so many others thought we’ve progressed as a team and with our players but the truth is we really haven’t. We find ways to lose, not to win and I guess I was hoping that would change this year. In my opinion we’ve run out of excuses and I’m not willing to accept them anymore. I have lived and died with this team every year now. Trust me, I know what you mean when you say we try and find a silver lining even when we lose but I’m done with that at least for this season. After the loss to the Tits on Monday night I let go of my emotions for this team. I have watched both games since then and I record them and re watch the plays but I’m done emotionally. I will not let them get me upset or want to throw things at anyone near me. It’s makes it a lot easier to take the losses and not get too bent out of shape – it makes me take standpoint from reality. I agree that there are a lot of holes and I think free agency and veteran players can help but this team doesn’t typically spend the money there and I think it is a shame. And I don’t think you’re a Kubiak fan boy and I respect your opinion, it just happens to be different than mine.

Confucius says "man who stands on toilet, high on pot".

by Bobobigbro on Dec 7, 2009 3:43 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

yes, I definitely meant Pollard.

I see your points, but I’m still puzzled as to how you got to the “fire Kubes” stage, knowing what you know about our talent. Don’t get me wrong… I’m upset that the team’s losing, but I don’t get progressively more upset as the year progresses. It seems like that’s what’s happened to you and others, though.
Also, when you say you thought we’d be “competitive” I can only assume you mean it in that we’d have more wins, and be competitve in the playoff race. Not that we’re not competitive in the games, because we are competitive in that regard.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

by beefy on Dec 7, 2009 4:05 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Good question.

You right to some extent about the competitiveness but not pulling out a W in those situations and finding new ways to lose and being dead last in the division does not screem competitive to me. We are 1-5 in the division and are about to be passed up by a team that went 0-6 to start the season. I’m a veteran Houston sports fan and I’m not sure I get more upset as the season goes I think I just end up taking my emotion out of it sooner or later. I’m at the fire Kubes stage b/c I’m to the point where I just don’t think he can get it done. He has a lot of faults as a HC and I was willing to look past some of those but it now appears he has lost this team. I like Kubes but his team won’t play for him but please also know that I don’t put it all on Kubes. I am very disappointed in the players and I think a lot need to be either traded or out right cut. It’s been this frachise’s status quo to put up with mediocrity. In my opinion I don’t think we will be any better next year if we leave everything in place as it is and add a couple of rookies in next years draft. I wish it was a different ending – I like happy endings :-) but it is what it is and I think it’s now time to move on and try another route.

I don't see the team quitting yet.

When I do, I agree that Kubes will have to go. I just don’t see that yet.
Your comment makes me think of another question for you… What is to be lost by letting Kubes coach out his contract? I mean, you guys are constantly saying that losing is the status quo, so what will one more year of it be to you, were it to come out that way? You’re one of the few ‘fire kubes’ people I’ve spoken with that will acknowledge the huge holes in talent, so why not let Smithiak fill a couple more in the offseason (these are holes a new coach would inherit anyway) and give him a year with all the good players we have, and 1-3 less gaping holes (easy, Jordann)? I could see saying no, if he hadn’t gotten any production out of the guys, but to deny that he has is just being blind.
I’d be willing to put up with the lot of commentors who would continue bashing the(ir) team for the first 5-6 weeks before Kubes hopefully won them back over. If he didn’t, it’s just another year of the status quo, right?

Wow! Another good question...

I’m impressed Beef. Just another season would be lost in my opinion if we let him play it out. No big deal I guess since we are used to it. Me, I’d rather cut bait now and go with someone else. That too could be a waisted season as far as W-L are concerned but it could be a year in where we add new building blocks to this team and start the changes. Beef, I don’t really think it would necessarily be a better year but I think you might just get a years head start over the inevitable. I want to agree with you about having added some talent and I think we have in some regards but I just don’t understand why we are still in the same position we were 3 years ago and you can say we’re not but our record indicates that we are. I am also interested to see what the team does with player contracts this offseason, signings in the offseason and what we do in the draft. I think we can solidify some positions through free agency but that will remain to be seen. I want the same things from this team that you do and really I would hate to see Kubes go but I disagree with you, I think this team has given up on him this year. And for all the things we tried to put in place this year it just unraveled and we will be lucky to finsih 8-8. I’m ready for the change now but I will tell you this, if they go with Kubes for another year I will support that decision and continue to support this team even if I don’t think it’s right. And who know’s, maybe they’ll surprise me next year. I can always count on them surprising me one way or another.

Not trying to interupt a good argument but.....

Even if the records have been similar, there is way more talent on this roster than there was when Koobs got here. I agree there are still many missing pieces, and an overall lack of depth, especially in the secondary, and on both lines. But this team has much more talent than when he took over.

That's just the thing

I don’t agree that we’ve reached our peak with the players we have, particularly on defense, although you could make that argument with all the injuries we’ve had of late.

Still, I am of the opinion that we may not have a bunch of superstars, but we are playing lower than our talent level, especially on d.

I didn't see Dreesen.

OK. I’ll take back all the bad I said about the OC calling that play, but I didn’t see a white jersey withing 10 yards of that ball. CB looked awkward at best when he pulled back to throw it. Forget about him being hit, when I saw him draw back I didn’t give him a chance in hell of a completion unless the receiver was 2 yards away or less, hit or no.

That was

a crap play period. And about 9 out of 10 times that I ever see that Jr. High played called in the pros it is intercepted. Crap play call and Beef quit with the excuse we couldn’t run the ball in. We did it earlier in the game on a 5-6 yarder by CB. Moats was running the ball well too so no, that play should have never been called. The last time I saw hat play was when Reggie Wayne tried to throw it and Pollard intercepted it. Just more of the same.

You mean the last time you saw another player

throwing the ball that’s not a QB, it was intercepted by the defense.
Coz the last time I saw a HB pass, it was a touchdown from Addai to Wayne. We were running the ball fine. But we were in the red zone. Inside the ten. Things are different. The defense tightens up. They get an advantage because there’s less field to cover.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 1:37 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Ahhh,

good point and the exact one I wanted to make (about the shortened field). Do you really want CB to try and thread it to someone in the endzone with all 22 players out there in a condensed area. Maybe I could see this play called on our own 40 yard line but not on a short field where he almost has to be pin point accurate with his throw.

Confucius says "man who stands on toilet, high on pot".

by Bobobigbro on Dec 7, 2009 1:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Except.

He didn’t have to be pin point accurate. Dressen was wide open and everybody bit on the fake run. All he had to to was chunk it there. Around Dressen’s vicinity and it would’ve been a touchdown. Most of the coverage was focused on Andre and that’s what enabled Dressen to be wide open. On our own 40 yard line, it would’ve been a disaster. Chris Brown is a fuck up but I know damn well that he’s a better football player than any of us in here and if I say that everybody in here could’ve made that throw, im not lying.

by Bobobigbro on Dec 7, 2009 2:06 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Not everybody messed up on that play.

Dre did his job by occupying the FS and the CB and probably an OLB on the left side of the field. Dressen cleverly snuck in between the tackles and found that wide open space for CB to throw the ball. Im not taking the Texans word that it worked all week in practice. Im forming my opinion from what I saw on the replays. That everybody bit on the fake toss play to CB and the defense was caught off guard by the designed play. I watched it about 10 times now and im starting to remove the blame from Chris Brown. It’s looking more and more like it was a miscommunication between Chris White and Vonta Leach. Two defenders coming at CB and he had two blockers in front of him. He trusted those players to make that block and they didn’t so he got hit as he threw.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 2:13 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

And Jordann

CB already ran it in earlier in the game from about that far out. We could run the ball yesterday when we wanted to. It was just a really bad play call and horrible execution of the play. Here’s one question you have to ask yourself, If you were the coach and you knew everything you knew about CB (fumbles, inability to run with the football, and most likely an inability to throw a football, and the propensity to let you down at the end of a game) would you put the ball in his hands to throw a pass with a short field? We all cringe when he gets the ball, we all ask why they hell Kubes has him back there playing or even starting for that matter so this was one call he shouldn’t have made, he has no excuse.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 3:40 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Ok, I see what you point to

but I guess what I was really trying to say is that we (meaning most of us) gripe about him being back there and question it. In this situation, with Slaton out and all things considered I had no problem giving him the ball to try and run it in. I knew why he was using him to some extent in this game but I would have like to see Moats get the majority of the work. I would let CB run it and if he had fumbled or got stopped then so be it, I would probably blast him but not Kubes for it. My point was we all question the use of CB which is understandable but letting him try and throw it in from 5 yards out is inexcusable. So while I question his ability back there it would not have changed me letting him try and run it in. So yes Jordann, I do question why he uses him just like everyone else and yes instead of having CB throw the ball I would have handed it off to him so maybe you are still confused but bottom line is I would have probably called a completly diffent play with someone else back there but I really would have had no problem with them trying to let him run it in instead of throwing it. Bottom line: It was a piss pore play call and he had no business running that play with Brown, Slaton or Moats in there. Kubes has no excuse for that play call but I can excuse him for having CB back there in the first place.

Confucius says "man who stands on toilet, high on pot".

by Bobobigbro on Dec 7, 2009 4:07 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Where your logic is flawed is pretty damning to Jordann and I...

In that, we completely agree with the play call, and see its merits. Regardless of who was back there, it was a good call, and did exactly what it was supposed to do. You’re taking the mentality, it would seem, that they’d never practiced it. Just drew it up in the dirt right before they tried it. You’re also assuming that since CB has had some issues, he has absolutely no business on the field at all. For all you know, he’s got a better arm and accuracy than Tom Brady. Just because he’d never done it before, means absolutely nothing.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

So what you're saying is

that you blame Kubiak but you dont blame Kubiak?

scratches head

Im still confused.

And you question his use of CB eventhough you already know why he’s using CB?

Im sorry. Im still not getting it.

Im just gonna move on.

I would let CB run it and if he had fumbled or got stopped then so be it, I would probably blast him but not Kubes for it.

So if Kubiak calls a toss and Chris Brown get’s blown up and fumbles, you would blame him. But if Kubiak calls a HB pass and Chris White and Vonta Leach misses the key blocks and CB gets hit as he throws the ball causing an interception, you would blame Kubiak? It sure looks like the blame should be on Chris White and Vonta Leach, not on Kubiak.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 5:00 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Jeebus,

Yes I question CB being back there but IF I had to use the guy back there (forced) he would not be throwing a flippin pass at teh 5 yard line for his first time in his career with the game on the line. So I was trying to answer your question. Pose it as if I was the HC what would you do? I wouldn’t have CB back there in the first place and I wouldn’t have run that play regardless of whos back there. And yes, if CB fumbles I would blame him for the fumble and not Kubes just like I blame Slaton for all those fumbles. What the hell are you trying to say or ask? Shit if I was the coach he wouldn’t have been back there and if I Kubes asked me directly at the time should he try and run the ball or opt for some HB pass BS, I would tell the man to run it. Now do you understand?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

He got absolutely embarrassed on that pass play to their tight end. Just didn’t have a good game. I’m expecting him to bounce back next week and rip some arms off.

I was yelling at a lot of the LB's in this game...

There were some good plays, but there were a lot of plays, especially in that last Jags drive where tackling was a big issue. Third and 8 for a dancing first down through about 4 missed arm tackles, ugh! I know, one play is not the whole game, but there were too many of those plays.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Dec 7, 2009 11:33 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Have you noticed in the last couple games

They are lining Cushing up on the line of scrimmage in the down position? I don’t agree with that strategy. He is too small to take on any offensive lineman head on. My recommendation is they need to do more stunting with and having the LB’s find the open lane, like they did on DeMeco’s sack. Let the LB play heads up, so he can see the field and find the open rushing lane and come in off the side of an offensive lineman. None of the LB’s can drive thru the O-line.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Coaching

I like to give a lot of leeway to coaches, as anyone who argued with me about Kubiak last week can attest to. It takes a lot to get me mad enough to want to off a coach.

Calling a half-back pass on first and goal down 11 is a fireable offense. That’s not a “you can keep your job the rest of the season” thing. That’s something where you should be immediately escorted off the field in the middle of the game.

I said the same thing about Bush after the Chris Johnson blown coverage. I don’t know that it’s possible to separate mediocre coaches from good coaches, but I do know that you have to be a bad coach to let something THAT illogical happen on the field.

We’ve consistently picked D-Line and little to no improvement there. This has cost us the chance to get a couple of good CB’s or Safetys. Now that we’ve had a couple of injuries, we are really badly exposed deep.

too pissed to read the previous comments, but...

Whomever even thought the Chris Brown play would be a good idea should be fired IMMEDIATELY. Kubes should be fired tomorrow for allowing it to actually happen.

And Chris Brown should have been cut the last time we played JAX (or did we forget that fumble?). This is what happens when you let shitty players linger on your roster.

At least he didnt have to watch this horrible game in person. After all the horrible plays, Jaques Reeves had a ball hit him in his hands, and dropped it. While the Jags get a big interception off a deflection, the Texans don’t make the plays with the game on the line.

by Barrett on Dec 7, 2009 12:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You would think

the announcers would know Dunta isn’t one of the best corners in the league, but they said it at least three times. And they went ahead and made fun of Koobs decision to run the HB pass, but never mentioned that the playcall worked. The tight end was wide open in the back of the end zone, the player did not execute the play. If Grossman were still in the game at the time, the call would have made more sense. But it is a curious play to call with the entire season riding in the balance.

Jordann, you're exactly right in your analysis of the play

Looked to me that Leach should have blocked the DB but messed up, and yes Dreesen was wide open, but the call was unnecessary. Even if the play worked, as it would have if CB had just released the ball about 0.5 seconds earlier, the call was just too risky, which is why I call it unnecessary. The last time we were down there we scored running straight up the gut with CB. If it was 3rd and long, the call may have been appropriate, but 1st down from th 5-6, no how, no way is that the right call.

It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

by oiler-texan diehard on Dec 7, 2009 9:55 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I can agree with you about that particular play call inside the ten being unnecessary.

It was very risky and Kubiak took a huge chance with the game on the line. But the play call worked(didn’t really work but you know what i mean) nonetheless. The jags were caught off-guard. It was up to the players to execute it and they didn’t.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 10:23 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

But here's my problem with this line of thinking

It seems to argue that the play actually went off as designed (or well enough at least) but the players didn’t execute and therefore the players are to blame and not the coaches.

I’ll buy that in the case of Leach and White, but I can’t buy that in the case of Brown. Leach and White are being asked to do what they normally do – block. Brown, on the other hand, has been handed the ball with the goal of throwing a touchdown pass. Possibly for the first time in his career.

With the game, season and Gary Kubiak’s job hanging in the balance.

He is a running back, who, by the way, has already shown a tendency to blow it in big occasions. Not a quarterback. Our quarterback, who is playing as well as any qb in the game (despite having a shoulder injury), is basically a decoy.

Maybe Dreesen was open. But the guy who has thrown very few passes in his life, and never under this kind of pressure, can’t get it to him.

Why can’t we blame Kubes for this? He basically put his tenure in Houston on a player who wasn’t suited to the task he was assigned. And, unsurprisingly, he failed.

Expecting Chris Brown to make the right decision (i.e. throw it out of bounds or just take the loss) is like putting me in a dentist’s chair and expecting me to do a root canal. He should never have been put in that position.

Agree - a risk:reward analysis of this call would undoubtedly

be that the risk >>>> reward. Kubiak knows it now and my biggest problem is that in the time allotted to make the decision, he whiffed. He has improved vs his 1st year, but has he improved enough to warrant another year as Texans’ HC? That is the huge dilemma facing Mr. McNair. I have mixed feelings, but still feel that we have a chance to be better with a new HC, but that is only if we land a great coach. The immediate future of fanbase confidence in the franchise is hanging in the balance. I would not want to be Bob McNair right about now.

It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

So, by some people's logic here...

Kubes and Shanny never should’ve called that play.
They’re absolutely right. There’s no way they could expect a professional football player to do that.

when you say

“every call is unnecessary when players screw it up”

that is so incredibly wrong, I can’t possibly believe you believe it.

So I gave an example of when a player screwed up a perfectly good play call to demonstrate how insane that comment is.

The slant is not a bad call. The HB pass with CB throwing it was.

Thats all I’m gonna say about that.

re: the play call worked

it most certainly did not work.

The argument that the play should have resulted in a TD is incorrect. The chances that a player who has never attempted a pass in an NFL game can complete it on the road (in conditions where the home QB caused his own safety in their end zone) with gloves on, when the team needs a TD, are very slim.

So the fact that its a low percentage play HAS to play in to whether it was a good call or not.

We’re down by 2 in hoops. I design a play that gets our 7’2" center open for a three pointer to win it. He’s great in the paint, not so much behind the arc. But I designed it, and he misses a wide open 3, losing the game.

a. Did the play work?

Was it worth the gamble? Or should we have tried to get him inside in the paint?

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

by texanphil on Dec 7, 2009 2:33 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The reciever was wide open. In that respect, the playcall worked.

The TD pass to Andre was also a misdirection type play, it worked perfectly as well.

two guys missed a block

and the back threw a pick.

3 guys out of four failed, and you say the play call worked because one guy did the right thing?

That is a very low standard to reach. I don’t think a play would ever be unsuccessful by that definition.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

by texanphil on Dec 7, 2009 10:22 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Those players did fail. They failed to execute the play that worked.

So in that sense, the play call worked but the play itself didn’t as we all saw yesterday.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 10:25 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

if that play worked

then its always the players fault.

There is no such thing as a bad call. ever.

The risk of exactly what happened is the main reason it was a bad call. Not that a half back pass is a bad call. That these players in that situation would be told to run that play with the risk being so great is the very reason why it was a bad call.

The play did not work by any definition.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

by texanphil on Dec 7, 2009 10:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So Dressen being wide open in the endzone

doesn’t mean that the play worked? The play worked. It did it’s job. It fooled the jags D. But it wasn’t successful. I think that’s a better way to put it.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 10:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

no, sorry

Dreesen being open does not mean the play worked.

If we run up the middle, and the C and G are supposed to create a hole for Moats to run through, and the C fails, but the G does his job, and Moats is thrown for a 2 yard loss, did the play work because the G did his job?

If its 4th and 2 and we throw it 50 yards down the field to a wide open JJ who bobbles and then drops it, did the play work? Was the probability that JJ would drop it worth the risk of throwing it to him on 4th down? Was that a good play call?

It didn’t work. It wasn’t a good call. GK says the same thing. One guy being open does not a good call/good play make.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

It's a toss play to the right.

Brown slowly rolls out to the right, then gets hit while attempting to throw, it goes right to a Jags defender for the interception on first and goal. I actually think there was an open reciever in the back of the end zone, but a horrible playcall IMO.

What is really impressive about Kubiak

Is that he finds new ways to lose. Some coaches are content to do the conservative missed field goal shtick, some, like Belichik, stick with your basic go for it mentality. Kubiak refuses to be so constrained. His creativity knows no bounds. Fumble at the goal line because you STILL have no running game? Check. Lose multiple games due to inept special teams play? Check. Give that same running back a FUCKING PASS PLAY? A MOTHERFUCKING BORDERLINE INSANE B-REEL JV HIGH SCHOOL PLAY? ARE YOU SERIOUS? and watch him promptly toss an incomprehensible pick? Check. Inept game management? Lifetime achievement award. My hat’s off to Gary Kubiak. Until today, I really just didn’t properly appreciate his genius. Now that i do, I can just relax, stop worrying about those silly wins and losses and just take some time to reflect on it.

We all need to take a minute and marvel at it. He’s actually getting our players to play below their talent level in some cases- it’s a rare gift, and one not to be squandered lightly.

Why there needs to be a change....

I have been a long time Texans fan and every time I think this team is going to get their act together they let me down. This team now has talent which is something that couldn’t said in past years but the team should have enough core talent to be a contender. Not enough talent to be a champion but at least make the playoffs.

The biggest problem this team has is consistency. They play awesome for one half and then suck ass the next. They dominate on one side of the ball and then suck ass on the other. This year they never have played a solid game on all phases. Then sometimes they win the turnover battle then commit a crapload of penalties.

If you have the talent, which I think the Texans do, how do explain the lack of consistent production? Coaching…

I like Kubiak and I think he is a decent man and I thought with his association with a winning franchise, would help the team right the ship. But has he done all he is going to be able to do? The staff he has put together on paper looks great. The OC and DC maybe not so much but the position coaches(rhodes, gibbs, kollar) are known for their ability and experience in the league. So WTF? Where is the consistent production?

I am not looking for greatness but where is the ability to finish drives? When you have a team 3 and long why can’t you force the punt? Where is the coaching to stop the stupid penalties? Where is the coaching to stop the dumbass turnovers?

I and every other Houston Texans fan is tired of hearing “its on me” or “we have to figure this out”. All the other coaches with the same or even lesser talent have been able to figure out how to stay 500 or better. This was the year I was waiting for Gary to show me he is the guy. We got rid of the last POS DC and got a couple more pieces to make the team better. We should be moving forward and I have not seen anything this year to make me think we have. I think certain phases are better (LB corp) but the results have not changed.

Whats the choice: fire Kubiak or give him another year? If you can him who do you get? The Chin? Shanny Sr? Give Holmgren the keys to everything? Or do you think McNair can find the next Payton or Tomlin? You know Winning Coaches?

I just want a post season trip at this point. Kubes has had time to make it happen and all the bad decisions made this year make me wonder if he is the guy to make it happen.

Its like building a new house.(A repost from keep kubiak thread)

Kubiak is good

He can build a good foundation (football team, working with players)
He can build a strong foundation that can last generations (several seasons)
He knows what is necessary for a good long lasting foundation.

He doesnt know how to finish the house,
All he’s gots in front of him is a foundation with a lot of potential to be something monumental.
And we all see it, and cheer for it.
He tries to put up some frames and some dry wall, but the man dont know nothing about hammering, so it falls to pieces in the end, and things end up half done (the 8-8 seasons)

At this point, if you were the homeowner (mcnair) you’d would want to bring someone else into finish the house.

(i was so proud of the analogy i wanted to post it here too.)

personally...

i love Koob. and think he deserves another year. one or two plays in any of those games, and we are 10-2, maybe even 11-1. i say, dump cunta, go out and get a better corner for less $$$, draft a fatty for the DL, and pray we don’t have injuries next season. as the years go by, the talent level rises. each year our guys are better than the previous years. we have cush coming along, we still got mario and for the most part, our offense is pretty much set. if we fire Koob, that will be 3 regime changes in 8 years. mcnair (IMO) does not want to be known as a revolving door owner, more than anything he wants consistency. 9-7 will save Koob. maybe even 8-8. it’s monday.. saints win, texans lose. feel like im stuck in my very own groundhog day.

time to wake up to it. We are not close to being a 10-2 team in fact we are closer to being a 2-10 team. I agree with dump Dunta but everything you just said are the same things we’ve been saying forever. We are 5-7 not 10-2 and we are not better this year than we were the other 8-8 seasons. I don't want to be the first to say this

I think the team has lost confidence in Kubiak. That right there, would disqualify him from coming back for one more season. Can he get their confidence back? Maybe. But, it would be a longshot in a season full of bonehead coaching moves that you can specifically point to that strongly contributed to losses. Heck, they won a couple in spite of his bonehead moves this season.

THAT’S THE CALL YOU WANT TO GO WITH PUT THE BALL IN THE HANDS OF CHRIS FREEKIN BROWN??? I’M JUST FREEKIN ILL THIS MORNING AND NOW I JUST WANT THE TEXANS TO LOSE THE REST OF THEIR FREEKIN GAMES NOW SO WE CAN AT LEAST GET A DECENT DRAFT PICK… BUT YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS….JUST CUZ I WANT THEM TO LOSE THE REST OF THEIR GAMES, THEY ARE GOING WIN ALL OF THEM AND GO 9-7 AND THAT IS GONNA SHOW “SUCCESS” TO BOZO MCNAIR AND HE WILL KEEP KUBIAK AS COACH… WHEN YOU HAVE ALL THE TALENT WE HAVE ON THIS TEAM YET STILL FIND FREEKIN DUMB WAYS TO LOSE LIKE THIS, THAT IS ALL ON THE COACH.. I’M NOT SURE I CAN BE A FAN OF THIS TEAM WITH AN INDECISIVE COACH LIKE KUBIAK RUNNING THIS TEAM. I’M SICK AND TIRED OF STRESSING MYSELF OUT WITH THIS TEAM.

THIS IS HOW BAD IT IS FOR ME RIGHT NOW… AND I’M NOT EVEN PLAYING…THIS IS HOW BAD I AM FEELING AFTER PUTTING ALL MY ENERGY INTO THIS TEAM….THIS IS HOW I KNOW THE TEAM IS DRIVING ME CRAZY……….I WAS ACTUALLY GOING FOR THE COWBOYS LAST NIGHT… SERIOUSLY…. I’M NOT EVEN PLAYING… I ACTUALLY GOT MAD THAT THEY LOST TO THE GIANTS LAST NIGHT. TO THINK… I WAS A COWBOYS FAN LAST NIGHT MADE ME CRACK UP CAUSE I NOW KNOW THAT I AM NOW CLINICALLY INSANE BECAUSE OF THIS TEAM…..

I’M IN THE LOONEY BIN RIGHT NOW AND I’M IN A STRAIGHTJACKET TRYING TO SCRATCH MY BALLZ LIKE CHEECH AND CHONG IN THE NUTHOUSE IN NICE DREAMS… HEY MAN GET ME OUTTA HERE!!!!

I TOTALLY AGREE!

You have conveyed how every Texan fan feels right now! The going for the cowgirls thing I dont agree with. No matter how bad it gets I will never pull for them. Kubiak should have never been the coach for this team. No one seems to realize that we have a team full of young high potential players that party entirely too much during the season, extremely undisciplined, and have lost the desire to win. All of these things stem from the coaching staff. There is no sense of urgency within the Texans organization. It saddens me to turn on the t.v. week in and week out and see a sub par bottom teir team whom I too have invested so much energy, time, and untill this year season tickets(money). Even though there was a player open that no one ever saw, we have THE BEST reciever in the league and we are the only team in the league that does not have a slant play to get him the ball in the endzone and against a ROOKIE who is smaller in size no doubt. That is what everyone should be asking themselves why did kubiak not take advantage of the matchup!

Inept coaching

Am I the only one who feels that kubiak should be gone? DO NOT GIVE HIM ANOTHER YEAR! I am on the verge of stroking out Sunday after Sunday!

Uhh, dude?

Read the thread. The answers you seek are contained therein.

And if you only stroke it on Sundays you truly lead a sad life.

We could use a fanpost on this subject...

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

No

You are the only one who feels that way. This post had almost 400 comments expressing support for Kubiak and a desire to keep him around. Thank you for providing the dissenting voice so sorely needed.

Wow

After reading about the players reactions today kubes might be losing this team . As much as I like this offence Ive changed my mind he has to go.

No energy to vent

But this video should sum up my feelings about our playoff hopes from four weeks ago to now. RIP 2009.

I must say one thing...

That play on the goal where Andre lined up tight and then did a little fade route. Where has that been all season? Andre’s our best player and we specifically and only try to get the ball in his hands on a fade route. That should be a fixture in the goal line. Not something seen once in week 13.

Schuab seems pretty terrible at throwing the fade in the past

kubiak' quote of the day

This is a part of coaching you go through. I’m disappointed like everyone else. I have to get a smile back on their faces."

WTF? smiles on their faces?? i think he meant light a fire under their asses! another reason why kubes is gone. get some passion, man!

by TexanRyan on Dec 7, 2009 4:45 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Don't question the passion because you dont hear and see it on the press conferences.

I’ve watched Kubiak during training camp and that man will get at you if you’re not getting it done.

Agree

People seem to think that the aww-shucks Gary of press conferences is how he is in real life. I think it’s just a media strategy.

Yup.

I like the way he handles the pressers. He doesn’t blast players in public but you know that they get it in the locker room and on the field.

i question passion when

a coach doesn’t discipline clownS like dunta after he did his little dance and got burned for 30 yards. i question passion when he can’t get his players to play 60 minutes a week. you think this bullshit we’ve seen the last 4 games would go over with Cowher as HC?? HELL NO

by TexanRyan on Dec 7, 2009 5:18 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

Well well well, what do we have here?

Another disapponting loss. It is sad our streak is in the L column. To tell y’all the truth I think we are takin a step back and I don’t see us finishing at 8-8. It’s more like 7-9 and that’s if we are lucky. Don’t get me wrong but I like kubiak. I wanted him to succeed day 1. What has he shown us over the years? Yea he improved us but not by much. We are stuck on 5 w’s. He needs to get a paddle and disipline these players! I don’t see him returning next season. I know it’s jus me but it seems like he can’t get us over that hump. We need a coach with experience and agressiveness. Much props to schaub for doin what he did! He’s a hungry player that can taste victories but some how we always come up short. He has led us down the field many times to atleast give us a shot at winning or OT but the kicker or HB’s couldn’t come through for us. Our season is over but with a new head coach next year it WILL BE THE YEAR OF THE TEXANS!!!!!!!

Man losing sucks

everyone here is pointing their cannons at each other.

I liked it better after week 2. They deserved the shots we gave em.

I actually like how it is right now.

There’s a lot more to talk about. Although some of the new commenters makes me want to bang my head against the keyboard, they sort of help further the discussion.

But I dont like how our team is struggling right now. Just wanted to clarify that.
