Texans draft with a trade up

A little something different.

Star-divide

Texans trade up into the top 7 to take DT Gerald McCoy (6'4 295) out of Oklahoma in the first round.  He is a very mature, talented tackle who already has a variety of pass rush moves and holds his own at the line.

They would probably have to trade thier 1st, 3rd, and one of thier 6th round picks to do it.

2nd round: Mike Johnson - OG - Alabama - 6'6 305 (RG of the future for us, great at run blocking)

4th round: Kurt Coleman - FS - Ohio State - 5'11 195 (hopefully can overtake Wilson)

5th round: - Chris Brown (no not that one) - RB - Oklahoma - 5'11 210 (steady, strong up the gut runner)

6th round - Terrell Hudgins - WR - Elon - 6'3 226 (very big reciver.......Marques Colston maybe??? :)

7th round - Patrick Lavine - OLB/ST - Oklahoma St. - 6'2 215 (hardworking fast backup OLB and ST player)

As for the rest of the offseason we can sign Carlos Rogers CB from the Redskins as he is ready to leave, to replace Dunta, and he won't cost as much.  We need to resign Pollard and give Daniels and Demeco extensions. once again this also means goodbye to Walter and Pitts. Also Center Kevin Mawae is probably leaving Tennesee after this season and would bring an upgrade over Myers and vast leadership for a year or two on the O-Line.

2010 Texans:

OFFENSE:

QB - Shcaub/Orlowski

RB - Slaton/Brown(rookie)

FB - Leach/Casey

WR - Johnson/Davis

WR - Anderson/Hudgins

TE - Daniels/Casey

LT - Brown/Butler

LG - Caldwell/Studdard

C - Mawae/White

RG - M. Johnson/Studdard

RT - Winston/Butler

DEFENSE:

RE - Williams/Bulman

RT - Okoye/Cody

LT - McCoy/Okam

LE - Smith/Barwin

SLB - Cushing/Adibi

MLB - Ryans/Bentley

WLB - Diles/Lavine

SS - Pollard/Barber

FS - Wilson/Coleman

CB - Rogers/McCain

CB - Quin/Molden

Nickel CB - Reeves/Bennett

I know another long drawn out offseason here by me, but I like the potential for this roster.

I also don't see the Texans trading 3 picks for 1.

The only players worth that would be Nebraska DT Ndamukong Suh or Tennessee S/CB Eric Barry.

I’d also the Texans keep the 3rd rounder and hope Boise State CB Kyle Wilson falls to them. He’d be a very nice pick-up.

Wilson?

Have’nt had the chance to see him play, is he that good?

I've liked what I've seen.

He is always around the ball and making plays (I’ve seen 5 Boise games this season). As a 3rd rounder, he’s got good value. Very solid player.

I don't know.

They have a number of good players needing new contracts. Can they afford to sign seven draft picks and keep all the top line talent?

by distant_texans_fan on Dec 7, 2009 12:44 AM CST up reply actions

That's a good point. I don't know the cap situation...

…but if we had to trade up to grab a Suh or Barry, I wouldn’t complain.

by TexansDC on Dec 7, 2009 1:12 AM CST up reply actions

i've had the express privledge of watching Suh

every single week this year. he is truly spectacular and i would love to see him in Steel Blue. He literally would make every defensive tackle on our roster look like Ivy Leaguers. i’m dead serious. He essentially kept us in the Big 12 championship with Texas. had 12 tackles, half for a loss, 4.5 of those sacks. physical freak. I would be more inclined to get a defensive back, but if by some odd chance we had a shot at him i’d be all over that. Granted i’ll shit myself dry if he isnt in the top 2 players picked.

Looking forward to not having an 8-8 year!

ya he was impressive in the Big12 championship. Hes going to be a top5 pick most likely, so I dont see anyway we get him sadly.

he's been impressive all year really.

I could see the Bucs taking him for sure.

Looking forward to not having an 8-8 year!

by BattleRedHusker on Dec 7, 2009 8:47 AM CST up reply actions

It would likely take a trade up to get it...

…and I am 100% in favor of doing that. The Texans have not had a lot of 1st round draft success (Carr, Babin, T. Johnson, Dunta easily). Suh’s a 100% manbeast. I would support such a move.

by TexansDC on Dec 7, 2009 11:40 AM CST up reply actions

I love Suh

but he isn’t much different than Okoye to me. He isn’t a nose tackle type DT IMO.

Suh vs. Cody

82 Tackles, 19.5 for a loss, 12 sacks (19 hurries), 10 Passes Broken up, 1 forced fumble, 3 blocked kicks, and a pick.

25 tackles, 6 for a loss, 1 pass broken up, 3 QB hurries, and 2 blocked kicks.

Stats in college aren’t the be all and all, but Suh makes plays. To even compare him to Okoye isn’t fair to Okoye. I’d rather have the active guy than the big guy. That said, the Texans won’t get him because Suh’s probably going top 3, but there’s a reason why Cody has slipped to mid to late 1st round.

by TexansDC on Dec 7, 2009 2:07 PM CST up reply actions

Suh is a beast in college

But I don’t see him recieving double teams from offensive linemen and stuffing up the opposing teams run game in the NFL.

which will only last until they realize they're gonna need to.

don’t let physical size fool you. Suh is on a whole different level than Okoye was in college. Suh is like Tommie Harris on crack. Regular sized nimble tackle who has incredible intelligence and strength. Please take my word on this. it’s more than a raving fan’s opinion.

Looking forward to not having an 8-8 year!

I'm ok with that, wish him the best.

Unless he is drafted by the Titans, or Cowboys.

Shitballs.

Are we already talking about the draft? Surely his team will be the end of me.

Fuck.

by Nashmeister on Dec 6, 2009 11:37 PM CST reply actions

At least we made it to December before we started talking about it this year.

And we aren’t playing in the Reggie Bush Bowl in week 17…

We have to take what we can get.

by Karsh on Dec 7, 2009 8:35 PM CST up reply actions

I know it's frustrating guys...........

but thats the reality of being a Texans fan in December. But I love this 2010 team I put together, would truly be a playoff contender with aal the added leadership and talent. Not to mention a new coach :)

Trading up

Is a waste of money and draft picks. We should never do it. I would much rather trade down and pick up a lower first-rounder plus a second-rounder.

yes

I’m always for getting extra picks too, as long as the GM knows what he’s doing. And this team could probably stand to trade down.

Rumplestiltskin

by jahunter221 on Dec 6, 2009 11:58 PM CST up reply actions

actually

If we get a pick around 8-14, we could probably get two 1st rounders from one of the teams with 2 first rounders, or a 1st and early 2nd from another team.

by jahunter221 on Dec 7, 2009 12:00 AM CST up reply actions

example.

This would be a possible trade after looking at the draft order predictions and who has picks in every round.

Houston trades it’s # 12 pick to New England for the 26th, 46th, and 57th picks. I would definetly do that.

WTF? Really? You don’t think we have more then one whole to fill?

by nolander on Dec 7, 2009 1:42 AM CST up reply actions

NE doesn't trade away #2's

They trade down to get xtra 2nd rounders, and Belichick has as many holes to fill as he ever has right now.

It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

by oiler-texan diehard on Dec 7, 2009 6:43 AM CST up reply actions

Giving away picks doesn't make any sense

The Texans need as many quality bodies in camp as they can get. Focusing on one player is not going to help the team.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Dec 7, 2009 6:53 AM CST up reply actions

We don't need another DT

We need a gigantic RB eating NT, and there’s actually a few of those in this draft, some pretty good ones in the 2nd and 3rd rounds. I just don’t see how getting another pass rushing DT would help us, all but Okam fits that bill now. Also, despite being a little on the small side for NT and better suited for the other DT position, Cody has played pretty well for us this year. Our problem areas are 1a- cornerback, 1b- offensive guard, 3- RB who won’t implode, 4- safety depth

by Bryan72076 on Dec 7, 2009 9:24 AM CST reply actions

I don't think they need to use a first day pick on a running back.

If the line was opening holes, Moats, and Slaton would be serviceable backs.

The League is full of serviceable backs though

We need to keep bringing in backs until we find one that can be more than serviceable, whether we take them early or late in the draft, or through free agency.

by Bryan72076 on Dec 7, 2009 1:54 PM CST up reply actions

I agree

while the Texans are staying with what they have, the Colts are undefeated, and still trying out backs, attempting to improve their team. I just think the Texans need to worry about the defensive and offensive lines, and defensive secondary, before the running back position.

If we could find a way to get an extra pick in the 2nd or 3rd round I wouldn’t mind us using our 4th pick in the draft on a RB, assuming we had taken a DB NT and C/G up to that point.

by nolander on Dec 7, 2009 4:08 PM CST up reply actions

When you come to think of it.

It’s sad how we haven’t had that much luck with RB’s when back in Denver (when shanahan was running the show) they can pick up anybody off the street and they would be a productive back.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

They had much better lines I think.

by nolander on Dec 7, 2009 4:07 PM CST up reply actions

True.

I thought that the zone blocking scheme was suppose to negate the lack of weight from our undersized linemen.

by Jordann on Dec 7, 2009 4:24 PM CST up reply actions

Is our line really that small though? Size matters little either way when there is little to no skill involved.

But I never brought it up because I dont think he’ll be a good fit.
