The Evolution of this Offense

I have brought this subject up in other blogposts and it seemed to get buried. I think it is a good subject and one that warrants some consideration and perhaps, implementation. That is QB audibles at the line of scrimmage. I have listened to Coach Kubiak address this on his Monday talk show. His current offensive strategy is that he doesn't allow Schaub to audible at the line of scrimmage. I believe it may be time for Kubiak to start to allow this. I believe Matt Schaub can do it. I believe it will benefit the offense. I believe it is where this offense needs to go in it's evolution.

A big part of my reasoning is based on the desire to watch the offense get better, and also because the players in this offense are smart enough to do it.

My best example of where it would be a good thing is the first play of the last game. I'm repeating myself here, but this is my interpretation of what happened. The play was a three-step drop quick out pass to a WR. The blocking scheme for the tackles was a quick one step and cut block, giving Schaub just the time he needs to get off that pass. The snafu came when the Jags CB's played up close on the Texans' WR's. So, what happened is, the WR's were not open when Schaub three-stepped back and he had to move up in the pocket to avoid the DE's who had sidestepped the cut blocks. The result was a game-changing injury to Schaub.

If Schaub had practiced and been given permission to audible out of a play, he would have been able to recognize the Jag's defensive scheme and audible out, calling another play. Now, I am not saying that this is a cure-all for whatever may cause injury to Matt Schaub. I am just saying, I see the possibilities of the benefits of putting a little more control in the offensive play-calling to the guy on the field who sees what is going on when it is happening. There are a lot of teams that do it and the Texans are not one of them. I think Matt Schaub is capable. I would like to see the Texans start to do this. I think Kubiak could go a long way towards getting some success on offense in certain situations and it would also be a move that could save his job.

And, I might add, there is a word called "trust" that I may have thrown around a bit and others may have also. Kubiak needs to get that "trust" factor in his key players.

Whoa!

That’s rather bf and d of you to say that….thx!

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Rip

Nice write-up. Like BFD said below, this stinks of micromanagement.

I would add that if this offense is rumored to be extremely complex for a QB to grasp, then that only strengthens your point that Schaub is intelligent enough to call a fucking audible every so often.

It’s also fairly arrogant of Kubiak to think that in the chess match of football, his Offensive play call is always better than that of the opposing Defense.

Well this brings to mind a comment from the 2nd Colts-Texans game

I believe it was Reggie Wayne who said the difference between the Ravens and Texans (they were coming off the Baltimore game) was that you knew where the Texans would be, you had no idea where the Ravens would be.

Granted, he was talking about the fact that the Ravens D uses a lot of zone blitzes and will shift around pre-snap whereas the Texans don’t.

However, that could apply to both sides of the ball seeing as neither side audibles or shifts. If the Texans could get people on their heels (especially on offense), how much better could that one adjustment make the Texans?

I dig this.

Matt Schaub is OUR quarterback. He’s a smart guy, and if he’s putting in the time to study then he should be able to recognize mismatches.

Also, if we’re using audibles then perhaps we can up the tempo of the offense to get out of the huddle and get set faster so Schaub can begin to see what the defense is giving him.

I like everyone else dont know the inner details of how our playcalling works, but I too think Schaub should be allowed to audible out of obvious bad matchups when hes reading the defense. I never understood why he wasnt at least given a couple quick pass or running play options when he sees something he doesnt like.

Agree

Would probably dramatically lessen the pressure on him.

this is one thing that scares me about kubiak

it wreaks of micromanagement, which is a major turn-off for me.

turn ons include long walks on the beach, puppies, and oral sex.

Imagine

Freakin’ Brett Favre, or Drew Brees, Tom Brady, Ben Rothliesberger, Peyton Manning, being told they can’t audible at the line of scrimmage! Let’s throw out some more names…Tony Romo!…well maybe that’s not a good name to throw out there…some of the young guns, Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, Jake Cutler. Can you imagine how they would like it under Kubiak? They would strangle him!

Peyton Manning is allowed to call his own audibles??

How’s that working out for him?

Can it be an audible when he calls the plays to begin with? Yeah yeah I know sarcasm.

micromanagement tag

has been placed on Kubiak before.

He listed it as a problem at the end of last year, I think, when he let BabyShan call the last game of the season.

Good write up Rip

In my mind this is just another reason to get rid of Kubes. With how fast the NFL is these days and so many different defensive schemes and blitz schemes i thought audibling was a part of every offensive game, but I guess I was wrong. If Kubiak cant trust his QB who has been playing at an extremely high level, than its probably hard for the players to trust Kubiak. It also wouldnt surprise me if some players dont trust Schaub since the Head Coach doesnt.

I agree with a lot of this post

Although I should point out that the biggest determining factor in this play being a bust imo is that Brown totally whiffed on his block. Whoever he was just jumped right over Brown. I think if Brown executes better, Schaub has enough time to get the ball off and has enough room to move forward and buy himself some more time.
