NFL Combine: Who You Watchin'?
The annual NFL Combine begins in a couple of days. As always, scouts/coaches/general managers/fans will be watching so they/we can start obsessing over statistics and measurables for the next two (2) months as we careen toward the 2009 NFL Draft on April 25, 2009.
Accordingly, I ask you this, BRB: Which prospect(s) are you obsessing over? A lot can change between now and the conclusion of the Combine and yes, some prospects may elect to bypass all or part of the tests, but I'm curious to know which players are currently under your microscope, be it for the Texans or any other team. Reveal your targets in the Comments below.

brian 0-sack-po
i believe he will be a workout beast and shoot up the ranks. what will that mean for us? well maybe that will cause a run on DEs and that will allow BJ Raji to fall to us. i dont have much invested in the combine, i just put faith that the scouts will choose the right pick to fill our dreadfully awefully bad defense.
DEs and LBs
I wish I could watch but im gonna try to stay updated on E. Brown and T. Jackson for the DEs. The LBs will be Rey M. and B. Cushing. Either way I know Smithiak will make the right choice for us but I love speculating.
If you aint Texans then F@!# You!!!!
my guys
Michael Johnson
Tyson Jackson
Brian Orakpo
BJ Raji
Everette Brown
Aaron Maybin
and then the lesser DE like Ayers, Kruger just in case…also looking at big rb’s

Alot.
Rashad Johnson, Louis Delmas, Patrick Chung, Sean Smith, and especially William Moore will all be looking to impress at the combine, as there will be no obvious frontrunner until then. Chung is a work out warrior, and will likely see his stock rise as a true SS in the 09 draft. William Moore is a well built guy, and I swear to you, I just have this itching feeling he will plummet to the bottom of the second and come off the board to the Patriots – he is a “safety”, but plays like a LB. What better to replace Rodney Harrison with?
Then, I will be watching the mid round/ low first day DT’s – Ron Brace, Dorrell Scott, Terrance Taylor (I like him a lot), Sammy Lee Hill, and Roy Miller. Time to show your strength big guys, as the need for NT across the board is pretty high. Ron Brace, if available in the third, is a steal for a NT – massive with violent hands. Sammy Lee Hill is a 330lb DT from Stillman – basically an unknown quantity. Terrance Taylor is 6’0" , 317lbs, and was once a first round prospect, but didn’t do as well, because Michigan sucks. Its hard to excel when your ALWAYS ON THE FIELD because your O is giving the ball away like its a live freaking hand grenade.
Then, big backs. Rashad Jennings, Andre Brown, Gartrell Johnson, Herb Donaldson, PJ HIll. I love me some Gartrell Johnson. He is not only a powerful one cut back with good speed and good power, but he seemed like a pretty cool guy in interviews. Andre Brown is also an awesome back, as the Senior Bowl showcased. Herb Donaldson looks like he runs completely upright and tries to use his speed to beat defenders – not gonna work in the NFL. Hopefully he understands that and adapts.
For my own personal entertainment, the top 4 OT’s. I love me some Oher, as much as alot of people seem to dislike him, and can’t wait for Oher, Jason Smith, Andre Smith, and Eugene Monroe to battle it out. For the record, I think the first tackle off the board is Monroe, then J. Smith, then Oher, then Big Andre. I think Andre’s feet are too slow at his current build to excel at left tackle in the NFL.
For the kind of entertainment like watching blind kids trip, I want to watch the QB’s. There’s very little starting caliber talent available. Stafford has a great arm, but has crappy decision making ability (in my opinion). Sanchez has less power in his arm, but makes better throws and I think will be a more successful quarterback, faster, if he is forced into a starting role. I don’t like Freeman, but someone will take a shot at him because of his arm.
Then, I want to watch Michael Johnson fly up the draft boards when he puts on a freakish display of athletic ability. I hope the interviews prove him to be a truly fantastic person and athlete, and the Texans grab a play maker in the bottom of the first when they trade down.
Lastly, I want to watch everyone throw up the steroid rumors about Brian Cushing when he throws up 28 reps on the bench. Go watch him at DeFrancosTraining.com, the pro gym he works at. He works his ass off.
And finally, damn you Tim. I had a “What to Watch For at the Combine” post going. I’m sorry I don’t post much – I get the worst bloggers block. Throw out some ideas for me folks.
You should just continue the post and call it something else
If you’ve got specifics on certain positions, I’d still love to read it.

uh, yeah
what he said.
I … got nothin to add.
MJ a texan? I’m intrigued by this.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
Me Too
I know the slights people have against him, but I’m still interested. One of the ones I hear a lot is that he is a speed rusher and will often get taken out of plays because of getting after the QB. In Frank Bush’s scheme, however, he wants all the DL to attack and get up the field. This tells me that he is prepaed to adapt to teams running draw, delay and sweep plays by utilizing his LB corps. If any Defensive Coordinator could teach LB’s something, it’s one that used to play the position himself.
Let's get the Texans a better fight song.
Ideas
Don’t even think about me affecting any of your posts, Riott. I’m sure anything you have to say about what and/or who we should be looking for or at in terms of the Combine, Pro Days, or anything else will add to the discussion. Go for it.
I’d love to read whatever you can cobble together about Michael Johnson. I’ve been intrigued by him opposite Super Mario since the end of the season.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
What don't people like about Michael Oher?
Has anybody read The Blind Side? Great book.

Pretty much every DE/LB
I want to know if any of the 3-4 OLBs have the strength to play 4-3 DE, and if any of the quicker LBs have the strength and size to play SLB. I’m thinking defense all the way. If I knew enough about college football to look into the 2nd or 3rd rounds, I’d have my eye on CBs and safeties. But I don’t see any I’m excited about with the 15th pick, so that’s a wash right now.
Is there one at Virginia?
Because that’s the only big school that runs the 3-4, from what I hear.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Clint Stintim
is an OLB from Virginia, and is a monster pass rusher. He is 6’3, in the 250lb area, and had 12.5 TFL and 11 sacks as a senior.
I would rather have him at SLB than DE if we take him, as I don’t think his size will permit him to be an every down DE.
Tyson Jackson – I’m not at all on the wagon with him and I wanna see what the big deal is.
Michael Johnson – He’s just too much of a physical freak to not be intriguing.
Rashad Jennings, Louis Delmas, & Sean Smith – All guys that I’d be curious about with our #46 if one of the three slips that far (which I think none of them will). Now – if we don’t take a DE with #15 – I don’t want a safety at #46… I think we MUST go DE with 15 or 46 or there will be murders.

QB's
I’ll be watching the QBs, because Sanchez and Freeman are our only ticket to be able to trade down, which is absolutely what we should do.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Don't forget
No one is giving the RB’s any love, but I wouldn’t be surprised if someone wants to jump up for one of them.
Let's get the Texans a better fight song.
That would shock me
I think there’s actually a fairly good chance that no RBs go in the first round.
If the QBs don’t slide, I think the only hope for a trade down is if one of those big-time OTs slip.

What About Beanie Wells?
He goes late first round, doesn’t he?
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
He’s the one that keeps me from saying “I think there’s a a fairly good chance” instead of “There won’t be a RB taken in the first.”
If his Combine goes well, he’s probably a late-first lock… but I don’t see anyone trading up for him.

I would be shocked
If there aren’t an RB’s drafted in the first round I would be amazed.
2004 – 3 RB’s in the first round
2005 – 3 RB’s in the first
2006 – 4 RB’s in the first
2007 – 2 RB’s in the first
2008 – 5 RB’s in the first
I went back 10 years and couldn’t find a draft that not a single RB was taken in the first round. One always sneaks up and gets selected before they’re supposed to. Moreno will be selected before Wells because of Well’s injury problems, and I wouldn’t be shocked if he was selected before the fifteenthh pick. I’m not saying everyone and their mother will be picking up RB’s because the level of first round talent this year is low, but that’s good for us for the purpose of a trade. There might be a team out there that sees a large enough drop off in talent after Moreno or Wells for them to justify trading up. Not an absolute, but a possibility.

Nice Research
I had forgotten about Moreno. He’s got to be a late first rounder too.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
running backs
I sold on the fact there will not be a RB on the Texans board in round 1 or 2. There’s alot of possible 3rd or later RB’s that might be a fit for them. Some may not be there in round 3, who knows. I looking for the ones they might pick so on draft day I can get exited about it or not.
This really is a slow time of the year, isn’t it?
Shonn Greene, Iowa
rashad Jennings, Liberty ,
Andre Brown, N.C. State
Gartrell Johnson, Colorado State
James Davis, Clemson, ,
Glen Coffee, Alabama
If we Traded Down
If we got anothe 3rd round pick, I would be doing cart wheels if Smithiak selected Andre Brown. I don’t think he’s quite good enough to be an every down back in the NFL, but he’s really close. The combo of him and Slaton wouldbe quite the 1-2 punch. Imagine how impressive Tennessee’s running game would be if LenDale White was actually good…and not fat.
