BREAKING NEWS: Dunta Robinson Franchised

Less than a freaking minute after I publish this post, John McClain reports that your Houston Texans did in fact hit Dunta Robinson with the franchise tag. Stupid 24 hour news cycle.

As Dunta was not slapped with the exclusive franchise tag, he can technically negotiate with other teams, though the Texans have a right to match any offer and would receive two (2) first-round picks if Dunta left. Although I cannot see any team deciding that Dunta is worth two first-rounders, I ask you this...if you were Rick Smith and Dunta got an offer from another team, would you match it? Or would you snap up those two first-rounders? Such a scenario would probably never play out, of course, but I think you'd wish Dunta the best of luck and take those draft choices every time.

If it were me I’d let him walk for 2 first round picks. Even with Dunta healthy our entire secondary needs an upgrade. I wonder if CB becomes a need now?

He's not even a Pro Bowler

I don’t see the point in paying pro bowl money for a guy who never made the pro bowl. Sure, I know Dunta was playing at a “pro bowl level” at the time of his injury, but that’s mostly Texans fans’ opinions, which certainly offers no guarantee that he’d have made the pro bowl. I don’t know any fans of other teams who even know who he is. Now the guy’s coming off an injury where he didn’t play so well, so I don’t see anyone giving up two first rounders for Dunta. I may eat my words, but I don’t think anyone’s going to bite on Dunta given the risk of losing those draft picks. I think he seemed more special to Texans fans because he was the best player on the worst defense. At times his play was a breath of fresh air.

The true test in the life of a Texans fan is how gracefully you endure it.

I think this is a great idea

I believe its a one year contract, right?

1. We keep him this year, or we are very well compensated.

2. We get to see if he’s back to his pre-injury shutdown corner level this season, or we let him go.

3. He is the inspirational leader on defense, and is worth whatever we were gonna pay him for this year anyway.

I like this a LOT better than signing him to multi-year deal which might come back to haunt us if he doesn’t ever return to pre-injury form, or gets re-injured this season.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

Maybe not the greatest idea

I see a few issues here:

1. Franchised players often sulk through the preseason or don’t attend at all. What are the chances Dunta sulks? I don’t know. But if he does, I’m not sure he’s going to come back as the emotional leader of the team everybody remembers. He’ll be a paycheck player who doesn’t want to get hurt because he’s got next year to think about.

2. Dunta Robinson is not a shutdown corner and never was. Shutdown corners make the pro bowl. Dunta’s strengths were stopping the run and inspiring his teammates, not shutting down top receivers.

3. I think this is way too much money to pay for even one year to only an above average CB. I say give him a modest 3 year deal and if he wants to walk, let him walk. Obviously, the Texans didn’t do that, though.

At least it’s only for one year.

The true test in the life of a Texans fan is how gracefully you endure it.

Who cares about the Pro Bowl?

For starters, if we were offered two first rounders for him, goodbye Dunta.

But the Pro Bowl argument doesn’t hold water with me. There are plenty of excellent players out there who have never made the Pro Bowl. There are also a lot of undeserving Pro Bowlers. You can’t use a popularity contest like that to determine a guy’s value. Nnamdi Asomugha didn’t make the Pro Bowl until this year, but he was a great corner before that. I’m not saying Dunta is at Asomugha’s level, but if he can fully return to form, Dunta at least has the ability to play at a Pro Bowl level and to be a top corner.

pro bowl

brett favre made the pro bowl, phil rivers did not. the pro bowl is not a way to gauge talent

by cubic on Feb 19, 2009 5:50 PM CST up reply actions

Okay

1.) If he sulks, holds out, and sucks during his contract year, what does that do to his Free Agency stock? It plummets like the Texans led by David Carr.

2.) Nnamdi Asomoghua is the only shutdown corner in the league. Just because a guy isn’t Deion Sanders doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve any money at all.

3.) It’s a 1 year deal. This doesn’t screw our cap in the future, and I doubt we have to worry about picking a great CB in the draft in the first few rounds this year. Too many problems are solved by this deal.

Agreed

Whether they were going to give him a long-term deal or not, the Texans absolutely could not let Dunta walk as an unrestricted free agent. He’s too valuable a commodity. Franchising him was an absolute necessity, if only in that you’re guaranteed two (2) first round draft picks if another team signs him to an offer sheet. As I said above, I cannot fathom a team giving that kind of ransom up for him, but the safeguard is in place to ensure the Texans have something to show for their troubles.

The question is this: Do the Texans sign him to the long-term deal, thus nullifying the franchise figure? Or do they stick to their guns and make Dunta play the season out on that one year deal?

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

I love love love Dunta

LOVE him. He might be my favorite Texan, after all – he’s the only guy who plays on defense with a nasty streak.

But um – two first-rounders? Goodbye and good luck, my friend.

I’m not sure there’s more than three or four players in the entire LEAGUE that you wouldn’t take that deal for.

Love Him

Love him also but 2 first rounders I would show him the door and throw up the deuces.

If you aint Texans then F@!# You!!!!

I echo Chris's comment, Dunta is the inspirational leader of the team

but TWO 1st rounders would be more than fair compensation; which is exactly why it won’t happen. Hopefully they will continue to negotiate and get a reasonable deal hammered out before camp. We need a happy Dunta on the field.

Just last week pancakes was saying no way will the Texans franchise Dunta, what a douche. I and several others pointed out the folly of that statement. I like the way Johnny Mac has stumped for ex-Oilers to get to Canton, but I would welcome a new beat writer at the Chron. I want someone who can more accurately report what the Texans management is doing.

I would kill – literally KILL – for that job.

Pretty sure that's the way journalism interviews work

But if you’re going to do it, go for Justice instead.

All I need is the interview – and a dull knife.

After having read your posts for just the last few months

I have no doubt that you could easily do a better job than Johnny Mac. He’s getting old and maybe he’s lost his edge.

2 firsts

def. over dunta…draft a CB with one of them

would the firsts be both this year?

by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Feb 19, 2009 6:36 PM CST reply actions

Not good at all...

I like that they franchised him, because I want him here for 2009. But as much as I want him here as a fan, he needs to want to be here as a player. In a sense – I think he is out of line.

by WhiskeyR on Feb 19, 2009 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

I wonder...

if Smith said they wouldn’t tag but McNair insisted.
