AFC South Gets a Little Bit Easier: Marvin Harrison Released, And Other News & Tidbits

On the ticker of ESPN, it has been reported that Marvin Harrison has been released.

Harrison, demanding more money than he was probably worth, was released as a cap casualty from the Colts today.

A couple of other news tidbits...

The Raiders release tackle Kwame Harris. This basically guarentees that the Raiders are going to take a tackle with the #7 pick. Update your mocks accordingly.

Lions QB Dan Orlovsky is going to become a free agent. This could complicate things in the Sage trade, as the Vikings might see him as a passable QB. Unless, of course, he is being chased out of the end zone. The decision not to resign comes from Jim Schwartz, the Lions HC, telling Orlovsky he would be backing up Daunte Culpepper in 2009.

That also puts in my mind that the Lions will NOT be taking Matt Stafford with the #1 pick. Look for Jason Smith, Eugene Monroe, or even Aaron Curry to go #1.

Falcons release Lawyer Milloy. The release of Milloy means one thing to the Texans - expect lots of competition for top-tier free agent safeties between Falcons, Saints, Texans, and others.

Even though it has already been reported, the Packers officially move to the 3-4 defense. With the Packers confident that Ryan Pickett, their 330 lb. DT, can play NT in the 3-4, look for the Pack to take Malcolm Jenkins with the 8th pick.

A little news, a little commentary, on stuff that may affect the Texans and/or the draft. What do you guys think?

Jenkins

Malcolm Jenkins had a terrible Combine performance which has a lot of people doubting him as a corner in the NFL. I’m not saying the Packers won’t take him, but a lot of people now consider Vonte Davis the number one QB in the draft. I’m actually writing up somethin on it now.

I like the news blurb Riott, if you keep doing this you’ll be a busy man in the next week or so with Free Agency looming.

Let's get the Texans a better fight song.

If Jenkins fell

that would pose an interesting situation. He’s probably going to be moved to free safety, and I would definitely take him. Even if it means not trading down or waiting until the second round for a DE (there’s probably better value in that round for DE’s anyway), too much talent shown on game tape to pass on. This is especially true if Eugene Wilson doesn’t sign.

lol its cool

…so who do yall want in the draft?

by DaBears2234 on Feb 24, 2009 8:57 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

What we want

Is for your team to trade up to the #15 spot to grab a QB before the Jets get one.

With that pick, we draft either a DE or an OLB.

by HoustonDiehards on Feb 24, 2009 8:59 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

i was gonna say DE for you guys...

but there is no way our “awesome” management will draft a QB in the first even though we desperately need one. Look for us to trade down to get more picks like usual.

by DaBears2234 on Feb 24, 2009 9:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The easy answer is DE

But for the Texans, the problem is that Orakpo and E. Brown will be off the board – and there aren’t any DEs (as of now) that are worth the 15… so they may end up going OLB and taking their chances in the 2nd round on a DE falling like Kruger.

by HoustonDiehards on Feb 24, 2009 9:04 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Some like him

Others think he’s far more suited to be a 3-4 DE. I think both camps don’t think he’s worth the 15th pick, though.

Harrison & Jenkins

I disagree that it weakens the Colts to lose Harrison. He lost quite more than a step last year, and it showed in the Colts offense. I think it’s the smart move to ditch that huge salary and push Gonzalez up the depth chart.

As for Jenkins – there’s no way in hell I would spend a first round pick on a guy and then change his position. That is just way too huge of a risk, and the Texans need to get this pick right.

You and me need to have a talk

About Jenkins. I’m writing something now, so I don’t want to post a rebuttal in the comments, but it’s killing me. We’ll have to wait and see, but I would be doing back flips if we drafted him. Resisting urge to argue….

Let's get the Texans a better fight song.

I would totally grab him as a CB. I'm just against changing his position.

But there’s no way I would draft a guy – in the first round – with the fifteenth pick – based on his performance at one position – and then turn around and make him a safety.

No way! That’s the kind of stuff you do with project players in mid-late rounds.

Hey – it’s good that we disagree sometimes. I’ve taken my share for the whole Maualuga/DeMeco thing. LOL

by HoustonDiehards on Feb 24, 2009 9:02 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If he can't run how can you take him at #15 to play CB?

Mid 4.5’s doesn’t cut it for a shutdown corner, which is what you would be looking for at #15. I don’t see it. Maybe he was overrated? or am I placing too much empahasis on combine vs game film?

by oiler-texan diehard on Feb 24, 2009 9:16 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

For me it's exactly that

I take all his time as a big-time corner on a big-time team over one disappointing Combine performance.

Plus, I don’t know if Lucas Oil is a slow track or not – but it sure seemed like everyone was slower this year.

by HoustonDiehards on Feb 24, 2009 9:27 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

So if Jenkins and Michael Johnson are both available at 15

I still like Johnson. I know you can never have enough CB’s and Kubiak suscribes to that theory, but we NEED a pass rusher. You think we can take Jenkins at 15 and still get a decent DE or OLB at 46?

BTW – DraftTek still has us going with your mock pick of Maybin.

BTW #2 – Don’t know if the Indy turf was slow, but Vontae Davis was 0.2 sec faster than Jenkins. Looks like that will earn him a few million $$$.

by oiler-texan diehard on Feb 24, 2009 9:35 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't know

I hated that Maybin pick. I hate it even more now. I’ve actually now made a round 2 pick in that draft, but I’m so UGH about that Maybin pick that I didn’t even link to round 2 on my site. (I took Delmas). By the way – in that mock – Ayers lasted to 46 when I had already taken Maybin. AARRGGHH!!!

If it’s between Johnson and Jenkins, I honestly have no idea what I would do. I would probably go Jenkins because of all the questions about Johnson’s work ethic.

Tough question, though.

by HoustonDiehards on Feb 24, 2009 9:46 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

If Ayers is still on the real board at 46

then we could do a lot worse than Jenkins and Ayers with our 1st 2 picks.

If Haynesworth leaves the division, our need for a quality #2 QB is not as pressing

Without Big Albert to worry about, Schaub’s chances of getting hurt just went down. You got it right WhiskeyR this is potentially fantastic news for Schaub and the Texans. As great as Head Stomper has played for the last 2 seasons, he is sure to attract a lot of attention. Got my fingers crossed that someone outside our division offers up a package so huge, that Bud chooses not to match.

Jenkins – Chris is right. No way is he worth #15. His lack of speed has him destined for safety, and we need a pass rusher first and foremost in the draft, whether or not we trade down. Should we trade down to 20-25 and Jenkins is still available, I still would lean towards taking the best pass rusher available whether it be DE or OLB.

by oiler-texan diehard on Feb 24, 2009 8:53 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Clarification

I meant specifically that there’s no way I would draft Jenkins and then switch his position. The guy’s a tremendous CB talent, and his high rating is based on that. No way I would spend the #15 on a guy and then switch him.

But if he falls to us as a CB, I would consider it, because I’m kind of afraid the bridge to Duntaville is burned to the ground. :(

The Bigger Picture

The Raiders likely won’t take a tackle with the #7 pick. They really like Mario Henderson, who played pretty well last year. They need a receiver like crazy and I wouldn’t be surprised if Crabtree fell that far and they pick him.

Dan Orlovsky has a very good chance of replacing Schaub. There’s no way Orlovsky seriously thinks he’ll be a starter anywhere—the best he can hope for is a chance to compete, but he won’t even get that. I think we’ll look at him, Ramsey, and Ryan Fitzpatrick to replace Black Hawk Down.

by Leein3D on Feb 24, 2009 9:07 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

The thing about the Raiders...

Is that they seem to suddenly be in the hands of someone who knows which way is up and which way is down. So I can totally see them drafting front to back. If they hadn’t started showing signs of coming around, I’d say for sure that they would just take the sexiest offensive weapon on the board (um, like last year… and the year before that.)

Wha??

“Dan Orlovsky has a very good chance of replacing Schaub.”
Seriously? You meant Sage, right?

Question...

Why have I read twice on here that Harrison was DEMANDING more money that he’s worth? I’m fairly certain it was a CONTRACT issue, and his contract said his cap number was too stinkin high. Am I wrong?

Think That's Right

My understanding is that Marvin simply wanted what was owed to him on his current contract. The number was too high for Polian & Co., and talks to renegotiate went nowhere. Hence, he’s now unemployed.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

by Tim on Feb 25, 2009 9:36 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

You are correct - my fault

Well, if you completely skew it, the Colts felt his current contract was much more than he was worth, so they let him go.

by Riott on Feb 25, 2009 9:51 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, no doubt...

But the spin that he was DEMANDING this money made him look bad. He just wanted what his contract said he was to get. Can’t blame him for that.
Again, no stone throwing, just wanted to clarify.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

Eventually, the NFL has to do something about the ridiculous yearly contract numbers that they know will never get paid. Seriously – when that deal was written, and both sides knew he would be up for how ever much he was scheduled to make at the age of what, 37? There wasn’t a guy in that room who thought he would actually get that money.

I don’t know the solution, because I know it’s complicated – but it’s just ridiculous.

by HoustonDiehards on Feb 25, 2009 11:38 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

37

They prolly thought he’d have retired by now, and it would be moot. Who expected him to go this long?

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

by beefy on Feb 25, 2009 11:50 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

That's an interesting point Chris, but I don't really see any harm done

If both parties know ahead of time that there isn’t a chance in hell of the contract being paid neither party is injured. The player knows that he will have to take a pay cut to remain, which guarantees that he will be free to negotiate with anyone. The club knows the same thing. Would be identical to that year of the contract not existing. No big deal.
