Cedric Benson To Visit Houston
The Texans will host Cedric Benson for a free agent visit on Monday.
Cincinnati has competition. This will be Benson's first visit; only the Bengals have showed interest in re-signing him to this point. The Texans could use him as a "change of pace" back behind Steve Slaton, a role Benson has successfully played before in Chicago. A short-term contract offer may be forthcoming.

So what do you think... personally, I wouldn't mind, though I think I like ward better...but if Benson is MUCH cheaper, then I'd take Benson...he's still kind of young.

Agree
Benson is younger and has a higher ceiling. If we do sign I hope Smith has the smarts to put in some kind of stipulation for player conduct in the contract. Although I think Ward would be more along our alley for us to sign, with the character standards we have. A little surprising on the Benson visit but I guess Smithiak are relaxing their standards with an eye on the playoffs. Its exciting after the 2 FAs signing I was sure we would be done with FA and focus on making our guys happy. Like the activity this offseason.

Jerome Solomon is saying that the Bengals want him Back as a starter. It will be interesting to see if Benson values coming home more than being a starter.

Not just coming home
But coming to a team that isn’t a complete mess. I can’t believe he kept his nose clean with that team, other than the fact that apparently Cincinnati is one boring town. I think he’d rather come here and split carries with Steve.

Don't see him coming here
I really can not see him coming here, its down here as a back up or going to Cinci as the proposed starter..I think he would rather start don’t you?

Looks like the visit is over
No announcement yet. I would assume a guy like Benson will take the highest possible contract, so I dunno if we’ll land him. Plus – if the Texans really are sniffing at Ward as it has been reported – they probably want to talk to him before pulling the trigger on Benson.

Ward...
I didn’t even consider him, but that would be incredible. And he’s leaving places without a contract. Get him in and lock him up.

He's asking for big cheddar...
That’s why he’s not getting deals did.

I'm back and forth on this
Benson is just so young and talented – but when I hear his interviews and see what he says – he doesn’t seem like a guy who has turned things around to me… I feel like he will eventually screw up again.
I mean, let’s be honest – sure, the charges were dropped – but when you get clipped TWICE for alcohol-related offenses in a month – you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed.
Ward is older, but doesn’t have a lot of wear & tear… yet has still had some injury issues. Then again, I feel like he is more of a sure thing to work hard, play hard, and keep his nose clean.

I don't see the need for him
…regardless of character issues. We have an extra fourth round pick. Why not use one of mid-round picks (i.e. 3-5) on a running back? It’s not like we need a guy who can carry the ball 300 times. We just need a short yardage guy. I’d rather we kept our free agent money for something else.
When I'm on the mic, I'm like global warming, you can't ignore me.

Like it
as long as we put some kind of stipulation for player conduct in his contract. He is young and has plenty of upside, if he could show that he can stay out of trouble I’m down with him coming here. Also if he comes cheap. I am a little surprised by this 1) I was sure we were done with FA, 2) my guess is that Kubes and Smith are relaxing their standards on the character guys.

I think it goes without saying...
But I’ll say it anyway:
I would absolutely loathe this move. And yes, Timmy, I know what “loathe” means. I think I might’ve even used it properly in a sentence.

Ya
We should just start that RB who is an A&M alum…. oh. Right.
Sorry Beefy, I couldn’t resist.
Let's get the Texans a better fight song.

Oh...
So I’m being unreasonable by not wanting a complete douchebag teammate from day one, who also has had his share of off-field problems… while ALSO not being a very good nfl football player?
You’re so right.

I can't argue with any of that
I wasn’t so much trying to defend Benson as I was trying to get a reaction out of you. Check.

nailed it.
I just can’t fuggin stand Benson. From what I hear, I’m not too different than each and every one of his past teammates. Fuck him.
Well played, TT.
Also, good post on the offseason stuff.
two birds – one stone, and all. Though, the two birds remain intact because I throw like Charley Casserly. Little bitch, that he is.

ehhh...
Cedric Benson labeled his possibility of signing with the Texans as “good.”
“I feel good about this,” Benson said. “There’s a lot of good things about being in Texas and Houston. I like being close to home and around people who have supported me.” Keep in mind that Benson’s sense of reality has been found wanting since he’s entered the league, and the Texans let him leave without a contract offer.

Signing Cedric Benson
No thank you. I was against it when Chicago cut him last season, and I’m against it now. Due to his “revival” last year, he’s going to want decent money; I’d rather direct those resources elsewhere and draft a young, cheap RB in the later rounds.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

LOL – “revival” indeed.
It’s amazing how a handful of solid games somehow overturns an entirely shitty career in some people’s minds.
If anything – you would think he would go back to sucking once he got another contract.
Anyway – I’m ready for the Benson thing to be dead. I hope some more FA visits hit the wire soon.

Re: Benson
Another thing…I cannot fathom how Benson would leave money on the table and willingly accept a backup role here when he could be the starter (and get paid accordingly) in Cincy. I get the allure of coming home, but that cannot be worth what should be a significant difference in money and playing time.

Benson NO!
I go with no on Benson, I like Chris Wells in the 1st round or Rashad Jennings out of Liberty in the 3rd/4th. Probably Rashad’s the best choice.

Rashad Jennings
I could get behind Rashad in the third or the fourth, but I cannot and will not support the idea of Beanie in the first.
