BRB, help a brotha out with two mocks I'm participating in...
I'm just looking for some feedback, here. I'm fairly close to a decision on both of these, but since the draft is still so far away, I thought it could help stoke even more draft talk.
I'm participating in a bunch of those "blogger drafts" where a rep from each team makes a pick. My pick is coming up soon in two of them, and I'd like to hear what you say. Maybe you can sway me:
MOCK 1 - first round, #15 pick.
SCENARIO - Incredibly, Matthews AND Cushing are both off the board, as is Jenkins,Vontae Davis, and all the obvious ones (Raji, Orakpo, Brown, Curry, etc).
This is the one I'm having the toughest time with. TT helped me out on this via email, but I'd like to hear others opinions as well.
I'M LEANING TOWARD - UGH. I feel like I want to reach for Sintim, but I also feel like I could get a guy like Tyrone McKenzie in the 2nd. I know we signed Smith, but maybe Ayers could be the guy Ayers/Mario/Smith could be our version of Strahan/Tuck/Umeniyora from a few years ago. So in short - I DON'T KNOW WHERE I'M LEANING!!
-------------------------------------------
MOCK 2 - third round, #77 pick. Rd 1 pick - Matthews, OLB. Rd 2 pick - Sean Smith CB/S
SCENARIO - There are two picks to go before I'm up. Still available are:
RB Rashad Jennings, RB Andre Brown, DE Lawrence Sidbury, SS Chip Vaughn.
I'M LEANING TOWARD - Jennings and getting our DE in the 4th, but I feel like Sidbury could be a great speed-rush addition to change the pace of our power guys in a DE rotation. I feel like Sidbury could be a cheap-ass Everette Brown. So - Jennings and DE in the 4th, maybe like the guy from Tech... or Sidbury and RB Gartrell in the 5th round or so.
Help me BRB. You're my only hope. I want to make the most informed decision possible. Thanks for reading.

Lawrence Sidbury!
I have a post coming out so I don’t want to ruin it, but it will explain. For Mock 1 I’m actually starting to lean toward Ayers.
Let's get the Texans a better fight song.

Yeah, I'm really starting to develop a man-crush.
I think he’d be a great add – and he’s actually a little more stout of frame than I thought he was.

Clint Stintim is a beast.
He will literally knock you out. Take him.
In the second one, take Sidbury. He’s got real talent, and I think #3 DE is more important than #2 RB. He wont, but lets hope Andre Brown falls to the 4th.
Gartrell Johnson could be a great pickup due to his knowledge of the ZBS that we are running, I vote
Mock 1 – Clint Stintim
Mock 2 – Lawrence Sidbury in the 3rd, Gartrell Johnson in the 4th ( or perhaps a steal on corner OR a NT if they all haven’t been grabbed)

Mock 1 – Clint Stintim
Mock 2 – Lawrence Sidbury but if he gets taken before you pick Eric Wood if he is there
by John S on Mar 12, 2009 6:51 AM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Wood is long gone
He went in the second, else I would definitely consider him.

I'd Go...
Ayers in Scenario One and Sidbury in Scenario Two. Unless, in Scenario One, you think you could get Michael Johnson in the second.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

I've championed Ayers as much as anyone
and have said so a few times on Chris’ site. But I just don’t think the Texans are going to spend first round cash on a third down specialist (nor should they). I’m not even sure they’ll go DE in the second. But as to what to actually do with that pick….Jerry maybe? Reach for Sean Smith?

I agree on Ayers
I love the guy, and it’s tough to justify going round one after the Smith signing – but as (I think) Socctty pointed out at my site – you rotate defensive linemen more than any other position on defense, so if we did go for an early DE, he could see the field a lot.
I know it’s a huge stretch, but Mario/Antonio/Ayers could be our cheap-ass version of Strahan/Umeniyora/Tuck from a couple of years ago. It would be a good “problem” to have.
I’m probably going to take Sintim. He had a bad Senior Bowl, but I’ll take body of work over that any day. The guy’s a pass-rushing monster.

LOL
I just realized I already made the Giants comparison in the actual original post. My head has not been on straight this week.

If Mock 2 plays out like this
I might wet myself. Jennings will be gone before the third. Take Sidbury and grab Gartrell with one of the fourth rounders.

Down to one pick before my selection in Mock 2
All the guys I mentioned are still there. I’m taking Sidbury if he doesn’t go at #76.

Selection update!
Sidbury lasts!
My take so far in the previously mentioned Mock #2:
Rd 1 – Clay Matthews OLB
Rd 2 – Sean Smith CB/S
Rd 3 – Lawrence Sidbury DE
Thanks for your help, everyone.

I'm not gonna lie...
I considered humping my computer after I read that. It’s that hot.
Yay, sports.

If Mock #1 is still pending, I would go Stintim
and look for a DE with the #2 pick. If Ayers & MJ are gone, we could use OL help Unger, Mack, Eric Wood or Duke Robinson.
OR
If you are hopeless stuck on Sean Smith, he could be your 2nd pick and hope for Sidbury in that draft as well.

I meant hopelessly
and not that it means anything in the context of your mocks, but Draft-Tek is falling in line with many of the Texan bloggers having us go with Clay Matthews 1st and Robert Ayers 2nd. IMO that would be excellent.

It has happened AGAIN!
In yet another mock w/ team representatives picking – Clay Matthews and Brian Cushing are again BOTH off the board. SIGH.
Actually, it’s kind of a relief. I used to want Matthews over Cushing, now I want Matthews, and no part of Cushing.
So, it’s back to the virtual war room for me. I’ll let you know who I pick
By the way – updated from earlier – in MOCK 1 – I ended up taking Clint Sintim.

In this new scenario, let's call it MOCK 3...
Matthews and Cushing are both off the board, but Vontae Davis is still there… not sure I want to take a corner with the first pick.
Also, surprisingly, Michael Oher is on the board.

I have to say - despite the conventional thinking
I’m very VERY tempted to take Michael Oher.
He’s not a mauler, only weighs 309. He’s quick and nimble, seems like he’d be a great ZBS fit.
He’s definitely the top player at his position on the board right now, IMO… but it’s hard to justify taking an O-lineman again…
But just think of the upgrade! I don’t know who we’d move inside… but it’s an intriguing situation. Too bad Jenkins got snatched up already.

I'd Go Oher
Wouldn’t you have to say that he’s head and shoulders best available in this scenario? If so, I think you gotta take him.

It's hard not to. I have another twelve hours to make the pick...
..but I don’t want to hold things up.
I mean – MICHAEL OHER!!!
The biggest problem I have with it is that hey – if Malcolm Jenkins fell, it would be a no-brainer because we still probably wanted a corner in this draft. LT is not even CLOSE to one of the needs on our draft board, so it’s hard to justify – especially after a year of developing Brown.
Why am I taking this so seriously?
Chris - www.HoustonDiehards.com
by HoustonDiehards on Mar 14, 2009 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because you care
Oher would be a value pick and we could move either Brown or Winston inside and instantly upgrade the line. Not sure if Winston or Brown would be better at RT but it would be hard to pass on Oher.
by oiler-texan diehard on Mar 14, 2009 10:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
brown
would prolly be better inside…
w/ winston and oher on sides…brown in middl…thats 3 nice young studs on the line!
by EveryHoustonTeamRox! on Mar 16, 2009 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I've said it elsewhere, I'm sure...
but I firmly believe Oher will be the best LT out of this draft.
Yay, sports.
