Mr. Smith
I still don’t see how any of these QBs are worth the top pick, so I still think they go OT 1st and QB next.
Of course, they could also pick Maclin or Crabtree just so they don’t break tradition.
Re: Smith
I think they take J. Smith too, but Curry is likely the safest bet in the entire draft. Regardless, I’m still hoping they’re targeting Sanchez (or even Freeman, though I remain perplexed about his first-round buzz) with their second first-round pick and get scared enough that he won’t be there to call Smithiak about swapping No. 20 and a third or fourth rounder for No. 15.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
I couldn't decide between what they should do and what they will do.
So I went with what I think they will do, and went Stafford. I think they should go with J. Smith. So I guess that means I’ll go with what I think the teams will do the rest of the way.
I think they take Stafford
Stafford is intelligent with a great arm coming from a pro style offense. His biggest problem was accuracy, and if they let him hold the clipboard for a season or three, I think he will work out well. The other option, like Tim mentioned, is they grab J. Smith and try and move up and get Sanchez, which is plausible as well, but risky. So risky, that I don’t think they will gamble on it. If they feel they need a QB, they will take him with the first pick.
The problem is...
They need EVERYTHING.
They should start with the lines (Oline in this case) like we should have done.

Touche
But most of the time, new regimes mean new QB’s. I think it would be intelligent to build Oline first, but I also think Stafford doesn’t suck as much as most people think. Either way, Schwartz and Mayhew will have the final call – they have access to all of the tape, their own guys, their coaches, and the interviews – all which make a huge impact.
True...
Drafting your new franchise QB in year one of your first HC job will tend to buy you an extra year or two, if things start to sour. Prolly the best call, in that regard. Glad we agree it’s not the correct one.

I think if the 2008 draft didn't turn out so well
for the 1st round QB’s, Stafford et. al wouldn’t be in the mix so much.
So they probably will take Stafford. What they should do is take Curry. But like a lot of early drafters (like us pre-2006) they are there for a reason.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
There probably won't be a
first round calibur QB left by pick 20, meaning they would either have to burn picks to trade up or go quality QB-less into the season, both bad choices. Taking Stafford with pick 1 is the best move for them.

disagree.
I think Daunte Bout It Bout It will be fine for them if they can block and defend. if not, turn your focus to Sam Bradford next year. Gotta establish a fundamental team before throwing darts, trying to find a QB. Now, if they truly see him as THE guy they want, I’ve got no problem with it. #1 overall needs to always come in and make an immediate impact, and I think Lions fans deserve this.

Do you really?
“#1 overall needs to always come in and make an immediate impact, and I think Lions fans deserve this.”
I couldn’t agree more, which is exactly why they should take Stafford first, a good QB affects the team far more than even the best OT.

So...
You were assuming that Stafford gets the starting gig immediately. I’d have to side with “not so fast, my friend” on that one. If they DO take him, for his and their sake, I’d hope they’d sit him behind Bout It for a year, and do it the right way.
If he’s good enough to start, then I’m with you.

the stafford wagon
can someone tell me why everyone wants detroit to take stafford, when every scout has sanchez ranked as a better qb due to his accuracy, his quick read ability and overall talent?
