Amobi Okoye...for love of the game?

He's a 21 year old physical phenomenon with a huge heart and an amazing career once he leaves football. The man spent a few weeks in his home country of Nigeria with charitable organizations for the second year in a row. Even better, he took fellow NFL players with him each year and has, by all accounts, done a great deal of good in a country that needs it more than most. Believe me, I spent 3 months in Nigeria and in that short amount of time even I was able to see the need in that country. It is among the poorest countries in the world, and to have millionaires from the USA actually take an interest in the welfare of its people is an absolute good.

All that aside, I get the feeling that Amobi's heart is not completely in the game of football, and therefore not completely with the Houston Texans. Now, it's only his third year (and he's barely old enough to legally order a beer), so he still technically has a year or two to prove that he is more than a first round bust. My problem with Amobi is that the Texans fired their defensive line coach because of him and he directly was probably one of the top five reasons why our defensive coordinator was fired (believe me, i'm not shedding any tears over either of them). Now I've seen the reports during the offseason that he was at Reliant stadium working out for most of the offseason, and those reports pleased me very much. However, he then left for his home country right before the offseason workouts and you can bet your bottom dollar that he wasn't even thinking about football while he was there.

Amobi comes back and starts the workouts and after two weeks he's feeling some "soreness" in his knee!?! Was this a direct result of him not working out while he was out doing charity work? I gotta tell you though, the fact that he's sore right after he got back from a foreign country isn't the part that bothers me the most, it's the fact the he reported it to the media. So he reported that he went to a doctor and he/she told him that there was nothing to worry about, but he still feels as if it's necessary to leak this piece of information to everyone while he's out accepting some award in a suit and tie. This really gets me. I can guarantee you that Kubiak did not want Amobi to talk to the media about this non-situation.

Look, the team doctor (someone who knows more about knees than I ever will) told him there's nothing to worry about and, presumably, advised him that an MRI would be unnecessary at the moment. Unnecessary??? When you have unlimited resources and a doctor (who is probably among the best in the business) rules that a test is unnecessary then it's probably nothing. So if this is a non-issue why is the defensive player whose improvement is absolutely crucial to the success of his team talking to the media?

I hope Amobi doesn't have any damage to his knee and I REALLY hope that under William Wallace Kollar he becomes the kind of player that warranted the 10th overall pick in the draft. I absolutely love this team, but I really have to wonder if Amobi Okoye loves this game and this team when he seems to be more interested in his charity work and "injuries".

Good job, but a little harsh

I think we get so caught up in scrutinizing everyhing, that we don’t stop and realize the obvous; he is a 21 year old kid. I think when he came ou of school, he worked out like crazy because that’s what draft prospects do to get themselves drafted as high as possible. Then his rookie year it just came naturally to him, so he didn’t realize how hard he had to work in the offseason to maintain that level of play on the field because he had always been a man among boys. But he learned his lesson last year when he was out of shape which probably lead to slow injury recovery.

I believe though, that the light has come on. Mario is a genious for taking him to Hawaii as a guest for the Pro Bowl. Now he’s a 21 year zealous kid that’s all about playing football for the Houston Texans. Because of that zeal, he let it slip out that he had some soreness in his knee because he was being honest. I’m sure Kubes and soe of the veterans will teach him to be a little more quiet with a microphone in his face.

We always talk about the fact that you really have to give a prospect three years before you know he’s a bust. No one would have called Amobi a bust his rookie year, but he regressed some last year. Let’s see what the kid does on the field this year before we label him either way,

Let's get the Texans a better fight song.

Yeah, we have to remember that he is just a pup at 21 and still has a lot to learn

This is still only season 3 for him, but after getting hurt and doing very little to help the team last year, this season is pivotal for him. The fact that he has worked hard to prepare for it is a positive. Please let’s not be too quick to run him out of town. Coach Kollar may be just what the kid needs to become the player we envisioned when we drafted him. And if Kollar can get something out of TJ he will be a miracle worker in my book. Hey, I ’m always optimistic at this time of the year.

About Dickie Smith (Former DC)

and Jethro Franklin: I think even if you only say he was one of the top 5 reasons for Smanklin (Smith/Franklin) getting fired, you’re putting too much blame on Amobi.

The way I see it, Smanklin was fired because they were doing a piss poor job of utilizing Amobi Okoye’s strengths. They were running a read/react defense, which is anathema to a penetrating UT. Amobi (and to some extent TJ and Shaun Cody) is not big enough or strong enough to stand up, see where the play is going and then shed his blocker and get to the ball. His (and their’s) strength is that he is quick and can blow past an O-lineman.

So yes, I guess that if Amobi had been a completely different type of player, he would have been used properly and Smanklin wouldn’t have seemed so incompetent, but I find it difficult to blame Amobi for that.

*As a side note, I’m not sure how much blame Franklin should actually be getting for not properly utilizing Amobi, but Smanklin is fun to type, so he gets to share the blame.

Rec'd

Months later, I remain perplexed why Richard Smith and/or Jethro Franklin refused to play a large DT next to Amobi last year. Amobi is small and quick, but he needs the help of a space-eating DT to maximize his effectiveness. Travis Johnson is not said space-eating DT.

Doc, I think you raised some salient points, though I’m with TT in terms of thinking that Amobi “going public” with the knee issue could be more the result of a lack of media savvy and an abundance of youth than anything else. Still, there’s no doubt in my mind that Amobi has a whole lot to prove this season.

I think we’ll get a pretty good idea of what Smithiak thinks of Amobi come the draft. Remember—we took Amobi himself at No. 10 despite having burned a first-round pick on Travis Johnson two years earlier. There’s certainly precedent for the notion that the team will burn a first-rounder (on a DT, no less) if it’s not happy with the play of an incumbent, even if it’s a recent first-round pick, on the roster.

In other words, a selection of Peria Jerry could be read as the beginning of the end for Amobi.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Yup

“In other words, a selection of Peria Jerry could be read as the beginning of the end for Amobi.”

Exactly why Amobi doesn’t want to get an MRI before the first few rounds of the draft.

and who's running the show?

Kubiak should make Amobi get an MRI.

*Unless the CBA or his contract says otherwise. Why would it?

So its a young kid who should be a rookie this season spouting off, and its not a big deal.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

with a little pressure

our db’s, safeties, and our defense as a whole are better. And we have a decent core of db’s, even with little pressure last year.

So whatever causes us to draft a talented DL makes us able to get more pressure, and I’m good with that.

And if Amobi is somehow challenged into becoming more of a dominant DT by a high draft pick, than even better.

I think this is win-win.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
