Cushing and steroids
Here’s the deal: virtually every player in the NFL is on roids or HGH or both. It’s a fact… the only thing with Cushing is that it’s virtually out in the open.
If I am Demeco, that boy is getting his head shaved ASAP

wow hold up
Cleveland has MILLIONS of picks, why don’t we trade w/ ’em and get a pass rusher?
I'm asking myself
the same damn question.
Good point. Maybe couldn't hammer it out and the Texans really wanted Cushing?
Couldn’t afford Cushing not making it to them?
Doubt it
Maybe we were just asking for too much compared to TB?

Ahhhhh
We knew we needed help on D. We knew that Diles and Adibi aren’t ever going to be more than serviceable. We knew that they wanted to trade, and therefore must not have gotten enough in the offers they had.
Almost makes me like the pick.
And beer count = 7.
not exactly in disagreement
but i think adibi can be more than serviceable

lol, i'm having a change of heart
i understand the pick. I really do, and the funny thing is, I KNOW he’s going to be good. let’s let it go. He was a SUPER productive guy in college, he was a Pete Carroll staple, and USC linebackers HARDLY bust. U know what, I just got a call from my naive young brother and he was screaming going, “YES WE GOT CUSHING!!!” lol, he watches a lot of college football…I’m on board: GO CUSHING!!! keep the hair big boy!
This is why I hate...
“Manufactured athlete who should test well but isn’t that impressive on film and often looks like a defensive end in a linebacker’s body…Is overrated as a pro prospect but has the talent to start at the next level if he can somehow find a way to stay healthy. "
from nfldraftcountdown
If he gets injured early, I would not mind seeing Smith get canned for this
by oiler-texan diehard on Apr 25, 2009 5:04 PM CDT up reply actions
i'll trust smithiak over NFLDC
…but i’m still bitter about not being able to trade down
- Rivers McCown
by riversmccown on Apr 25, 2009 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, but what about...
“Ideal size and bulk…Good athleticism…Adequate speed…Extremely versatile…Reliable tackler…Excellent strength…Tough…Intense and very competitive…Decent pass rusher with a burst to close…Changes directions well…Good range…Able to shed blocks and work through traffic..Good special teamer…Smart…Hard worker…May have upside.”
Sounds like everything you could want.
The steroids thing only bothers me because of the suspensions involved with getting caught. I give the pick a B-.
i think it's more of
Matthews was available and Cushing is kinda banged up. I don’t mind the pick nemore, let’s just jump on board. We really needed help on the edges.

Would rather have him than Cushing
OK now I stop bashing BC, but the ponytail has got to go
by oiler-texan diehard on Apr 25, 2009 5:07 PM CDT up reply actions
I really hope he doesn't pull any of that David Carr shit
like not cutting his hair until we win x amount of games in a row… or something.
We needed the OLB
And I trust Smith and Kubiak to make the right call. They get paid alot more than I do regarding NFL matters.
One last thought
I think I’ve “known” for a while we were going to take a USC LB. It’s was a matter of which one. None of them excite me, and that’s kind of led to a general malaise for the draft this year.
Any of these guys will be an upgrade, but I don’t know how much of a ceiling Cushing or CM3 really have. Plus, we already had a guy who couldn’t cover TEs in Diles. I dunno.
Malaise is the right word. Underwhelming is another good one.
Second round is what I’m waiting for now. I have high hopes for that.
I justify it to myself like this...
Cushing is basically CM3 w/out the fun story and the neato family line. I was ok with CM3.
Cushing is CM3 w/ a gay hair cut.
I’m ok with this.

i like u
bigfatdrunk, u were the only one who shared the enthusiasm for Orakpo, and the disgust when the Redfucks took him at 2 picks ahead of us. But hey, at the very least, we know what we’re getting w/ Cushing. He’s well coached, he’s big and strong, and he works hard. He won’t get confused and star struck at the NFL level. Let’s give him at least a shot before we slam him down.
Eagles receivers
Maclin, Jackson, and White Lightning. These are all the same kind of receiver. They have the o-line to do it all, though
still a good pick though
although Wells was available, i thought they were going there.
HAHAHA DARRIUS HEYWARD BEY AT 7
hahahah omg, gotta love the draft
just watched the path to the nfl draft
and I’m liking Cushing more and more.
So a few drinks later...
I’m unmoved. That’s really the only emotion I can muster. I felt the same way last year though… and Brown was… um… unmoving I guess. Well he moved a lot against speed rushers… but i’m speaking in emotions.
God I hate the teams I support.
Poor Wonderlic score?
Reading the book about him by Michael Lewis, I didn’t buy that he’d be a #1 overall selection. The guy works really hard but has a learning disability (or did, at the writing of the book). Maybe thats it?
ooohh
Pettigrew and Stafford…nice job Lions.
noteables still on the board:
Oher, Wells, Maualuga, Matthews, VDavis
I love scouting reports
One says that Cushing has “no true position”. Another says that he’s “versatile”. Heh
Eh.
Is that the worst? Would it be so bad to have a LB corp made up of players we can move around? Imagine LBs in flux… DeMeco shifting out a bit, Cushing to the inside… I mean I’ll take flexibility any day of the week.
by DisplacedTexan on Apr 25, 2009 5:25 PM CDT up reply actions
Oh, I'm not banging on Cushing
I am just saying that there are two sides to these scouting reports. One “scout” sees something as a positive (“versatile”), another says he has no true position.
why didn't we trade w/ the cowboys?
they don’t have a 1st round selection, we should’ve traded w/ them so they can select Pat White. and we better pick Dwight Howard in the 2nd round.
Bwhaha
Most anti-climatic first-round pick ever.
My Browns friend just messaged me… he is unamused.

Pats will be making a move for second rounders
12 picks on that roster? No way they can use them all.
Pete Prisco likes our pick
“Analysis: I love this kid. I have for a long time. Adding him to the front seven is a great move for the Texans. He will be a 10-year starter and a Pro Bowl player in three years.”
I just threw up a little in my mouth.

man
Wells and Maualuga are both available…not a SINGLE safety has been taken yet. lol.
maaaan
i don’t even care nemore. Orakpo’s not a Texan, we can get anyone and it wouldn’t make me feel satisfied. aaah but Matthews has yet to be drafted yet maybe that’s a sign that Matthews was never truly highly rated. lol, “I know Bellicheck and Mangini are competitive but this is ridiculous” -Rich Eisen on Browns and Patriots constantly trading their picks.
Good point about Matthews I suppose
But the second round is neat stuff.
hey guys
why was cushing so unexcited to become a Texan? was it just nerves? he looked kinda pissed actually.
he didn't smile
and he was on the phone w/ this weird fake smirk….iono it could be thrown up to nerves.
Trades
Do you think teams tell one another who they are trading up for? Did GB tell NE they wanted Matthews in order to calm NE’s nerves about maybe losing Butler?
God NE is murdering fools on these draft picks
I am so impressed with them. They have FOUR 2nd rounders. They are going to get four really good players on the cheap.
NE has had the draft value thing down pat for years
No big surprise
- Rivers McCown
by riversmccown on Apr 25, 2009 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions
WOW
what the hell did GB do?? traded their entire draft for Matthews? and after watching that tape, I’m kinda glad we didn’t draft Matthews. He was getting pwned. stupid NE trading for all those 2nd rounders.
He was getting pwned.
Call me stupid, but I get wary about guys who didn’t have good prospect grades coming out of high school. Yea, they gave up two threes and a second rounder this year, right?
Colts take RB?
Very interesting… especially with DTs on the board.
Colts haven't taken defense in the first since Freeney

Gruden: “Buffalo has the deepest receiver corps I’ve ever seen”
Really? Better than Cincy a few years ago, or Indy two years ago?
Donald Brown
has Matt Forte written all over him. Awesome pick by Bill Polian. The rich get richer. Cushing u better take care of bidness.
I hope their draft office explodes
But maybe thats just me
- Rivers McCown
by riversmccown on Apr 25, 2009 6:11 PM CDT up reply actions
why
wouldn’t u trade this 1st rounder for Chad Johnson, Braylon Edwards or Anquain Boldin? I mean ur gonna take a receiver newayz? I don’t get it. Nicks is cool, but come on, Boldin, Ocho, and Edwards??? the Patriots should trade half of their picks and get Boldin just to piss people off.
???
Johnson is old and is a headache. Edwards drops too many balls and the Browns were asking too much anyway. Plus you’d need to sign him to a new deal. Boldin is going to cost you $10 million a year and may – MAY – have looked a little too good with Larry Fitz on the opposite side.
still
none of those are reasons to miss out on probowl receivers that could lift ur team deep into the playoffs when we’re talking about waiting 3 yrs to see dividends on receivers newayz. (think about James Hardy, Devin Thomas, and Limas Sweed last year) as much as u hate Johnson, he’s still good, same w/ Edwards and Boldin.
Bengals couldn't get a three this year for Johnson
Johnson is about to turn 30. He’s no longer a Pro Bowl receiver. Edwards gets hurt and catches a lower percentage of balls than TO with a messed up finger. Boldin is the only one I think they should have gone after, and he’s not quite what they were looking for.
I would hate it, but...
…I want to see what Matt would do if the Titans took Sean Smith
bfd -
What do you think about us getting Mauauauaualuga or Laurinitis in the second?
I don't see either of them slipping
Plus, they are both more inside guys. I’d rather address the secondary or take a Ron Brace or Michael Johnson if they are there. Personally.
still want Rashad Johnson
But will trust Smithiak’s tastes on safety.
Don’t like Brace or Johnson personally.
- Rivers McCown
by riversmccown on Apr 25, 2009 6:28 PM CDT up reply actions
Meh on Johnson
I know they are inside guys but I don’t think that is a hard and fast rule with linebackers. See: DeMeco Ryans (although he went from outside to inside). Rey would be a good fit at the strongside I think. Laurinitis at weakside? He’s 244…
Fills a need
But I think Arizona has a lot more holes than people realize. They were more of the 9-7 team from a weak division last year than “team that almost won the Super Bowl”.
good thing we're focused on defense
everyone else in the AFC south is picking offense
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
Wait a little bit
…also have Sean Smith, Rashad Johnson, and others.
Really?
I’m thinking they’d have better luck in the “fuck it, you want to be fat and you know it.” market

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
McDaniels is a f'n Retard

Andre Smith + Rey Maualuga?
Dare I say it…is Cincy having one of the best drafts this year?
It's two picks.
But they got two great players who were really undervalued.
I just choked on my chicken
Wait… that didn’t come out right…
I can't believe no one was HAMMERING the Raiders for DHB
It’s unreal. I can’t believe how predictable that old coot is.
Wow, totally true.
Pats just fucked up their pick though. I guess they will still get two picks anyway.
Brown or Sean Smith would be great.

No and maybe
But I would like to get Smith. We need something other than another pass rushing DE right now

I think we can rule out Michael Johnson
But how about trading some sixth rounders and our third for a spot in the second to grab Sean Smith?
Apparently we, the Texans blogosphere, have over-rated the guy.
We may be the only people who recognize his true value
OD was a 4th rounder, Super Steve & Winston went in the 3rd

Posted this earlier in response to someone bashing the Aaron Maybin pick but now that we have Barwin
http://thegoodbyeladiesdraftreport.blogspot.com/2009/04/updated-2009-nfl-draft-defensive-end3-4.html
“The model projects Connor Barwin to be the best pass rusher in this draft. His projection is the strongest of any second round pick since 2001, with the exception of Aaron Schobel, who projected to have 49.99 sacks and who in fact had 67 sacks by his seventh year. Barwin has the ninth highest projection of any player in the data set, just edging out Terrell Suggs’. As an added bonus, Barwin is apparently also strong against the run. Connor Barwin was not originally included because ProFootballWeekly projected him as a third round pick. However, Gosselin has put him squarely in the second round, which seems to be more in line with the consensus on Barwin.”
Not that this is any kind of an authoritative source, but it’s a good sign.

I've heard quite a bit about him.
The one problem I have with that study is that the data set on Barwin has got to be incredibly small.
Yes
But just about every statistical study in the NFL Draft suffers from that at this point.
Still nice to be on the good side of it.

Could be the Owen Daniels or Steve Slaton
of this draft. Or, better yet, the DeMeco Ryans.

I'm sure
Smithiak has him projected as a situational pass rusher type at the beginning of his career. The CUshing pick gives it away. Cushing is our SLB, and Barwin is like our DE pass rush rotation guy.
wow, the Raiders REALLY don't want us to take them seriously do they?

almost jizzed in my pants after seeing that.
Let's take a moment to be thankful
that we do not live in the Bay Area and root for the Raiders.
I wish...
they played more of Mel Kiper telling us he’ll see us at Mike Williams’ Hall of Fame introduction.
This reminds me a lot of the ingame threads
This is a blast. It’s great to talk smack with some of the guys from last season as well as the new folks.
Man, that one beer is really getting to me. I love you all, man.

If we go DE or hybrid with the next pick I will be extremely surprised
if it’s D, should be a safety or CB.

Personally
I’m hoping for an RB.

I think it will be RB or S.

I really thought he was a second round lock months ago
But as of a couple of weeks ago, I thought he’d slide to the third.

I think they passsed
but get to pick any time they want to at this point. They can still trade rights to it, I think. Someone fucked up the logistics.
Australia
In late 2006 I went to Australia for work. There was this bar called the “bimbo bar” that we went to. This insanely hot and drunk chick came up to me and started molesting me, basically. I was pretty tempted… but then I realized she had a black eye from a fight. I told her to go away. She ended up breaking a heel and falling on the floor, dropping her wine glass.
The Raiders remind me of that girl.
