Ok. I dont know much about the guys left, aside from Michael Johnson (Which I dont see happening) and Andre Brown, but I look forward to learning about whoever we draft. Much like I am doing with Connor Barwin, a guy I had never even heard of before yesterday.
Here you go
This might help. It’s a breakdown of players that should be drafted today that I like.
You know... for kids.
this is where Smithiak brings it home
After a first day that garnered mixed reactions, if only for the Cushing pick, I’m ready for day two. I think we solidified our front seven, which is fine with me. And he can cut off the pony tail.
I want a RB in round 3, then I want two starting pro bowlers in the fourth round. After that, lets take some chances.
In Smithiak I trust.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
The Day After
I might hate the Cushing pick more than I did yesterday.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
If By That You Mean
That the thought of Okoye makes you alternate between blinding rage and crushing sadness, then yes…that’s where I am with Cushing.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
I Liked The Okoye Pick
For two reasons—first, because I thought (and continue to think) it represented great value at No. 10 and second, because I thought it meant the end of Travis Johnson in Houston.
I’m still waiting for the latter to happen so I can sleep at night.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
The Okoye Pick
Was a lottery ticket that still might pan out. He’s still as young as most players in THIS draft.

I'll take the old NFL draft format.
I like the whole “not having to set an alarm to wake up for the draft” thing.
- Rivers McCown
And the Jets trade up again
What the deuce?
Please Take Cushing, NYJ
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
except that takes one option off the board
for those before us
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
Ah, fuckballs.
I’d probably rather have Brown too, but I would have been just fine with nabbing Greene in the third as well. And any time a position we need comes off the board, it’s bad news bears.
Anybody else get the gut feeling that the Cowboys will dick us over?
I think we might have to jump ahead of them to nab Rashad Johnson
- Rivers McCown
I just posted
An article on the man page about Day One. Here’s the link.
BTW, did anyone go to Tim’s house last night and remve all the sharp objects?
You know... for kids.
Rather have a FS than a SS
But I’d settle for Vaughn too. At least it shows that the Texans brass realize that safety is an actual position

Love Draft Cast
The video they have next to the picks is the interview w/ Dirty Sanchez with Schaub’s jersey in the background.
September can’t get here fast enough.
It's also Day 2

Very good thoughts, actually.
But I’m very worried that the quality RBs in this draft end pretty much at our pick. Maybe they could package a 4th and 5th to get another pick in the 3rd and get both.
Rex Ryan looks like he's lost weight
Maybe it’s just the camera view being face-only
- Rivers McCown
Wouldn't have surprised me before today.
I thought Levitre might be on the board still. But with him, Mack, Unger, and Wood all gone, it’s not all that safe of a pick any more.
Aye.
I have a feeling we’re not even going to have to make that decision though; somebody else will do it for us.

Analysis on Caldwell:
“A nice fit for the Texans’ zone blocking scheme who has the body control and athleticism to get to the second level and cut down defenders in space. Houston needed to add a bit more “pop” to their interior offensive line and Caldwell certainly fits the bill."
I can live with that.
Though a bit annoyed if it signals the end of Myers. What did we give up for him? 6th rounder?
by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions
True
But Caldwell can swing to OG if we have an injury, and Myers can come in as a more-than-competent backup Center
Personally I like it when we can call a running play without having to worry about the center getting catapulted into the back
Maybe thats just me.

RB's are fungible to the Kubiak/Shanahan system
Thats just how it is.
Hell, I’d even say Slaton was the exception instead of the rule, that high.
- Rivers McCown
Not that I know anything about this center...
But if he can play, then I can’t complain. I’d love a back-up RB who can bring it, but an upgrade at center is going to make Slaton even better. And in all honesty, I thought weak interior line-play was the biggest deterrent to us turning yards into points last year.
And you can never have too many linemen; Myers isn’t a great starter, but he’ll be a very capable back-up.
by Nashmeister on Apr 26, 2009 10:07 AM CDT up reply actions
This is the cost of becoming good
Non sexy players, no real homerun hitters, but solid picks that will get us over that hump.
They alays say
You need to be in the beginning of the run, not th end. We got Caldwell right in the midst of a bunch of interior OL men coming off the board, some of them way too early in my opinion.
I like this pick

I’m already warming up to the pick. I’m picturing the sort of fluid, rotating, hybrid front seven we can put together with the bodies we have.

Off Topic....sort of
I just decided what would make me like/love the Cushing pick. If he takes a detour through Minnesoooota on his way to Houston, and throws his shoulder (or man boob) into Jared Allen’s knee(s). In public. And has someone video it.

True
For themost part, they’ve done terribly. Ayers is the only pick that I thought was good where they got it.
McDaniels is going to be TERRIBLE.

Don't Agree
I like ayers a lot, I think he’s going to be good. He was a beast at the snior bowl, against the best OT in the draft
You know... for kids.
Ayers
9 sacks in 48 games. That is not a first round 4-3 DE. I think he busts hard.
- Rivers McCown
by riversmccown on Apr 26, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions
He didn't play
48 games. He didn’t start until his senior year, and he was a beast. You can call him a one year wonder if you want, but he did play extremely well in 2008.
You know... for kids.
In that case
you must hate Connor Barwin too, he only played defense for one year as well
You know... for kids.
12 sacks.

I love Barwin
but there is no way that you can compare his 10 sacks in Conference USA to Ayers playing in the SEC. Plus, they probably took Ayers because he was great against the run, in the best run conference in college football.
You know... for kids.
Cinci was a solid team
I think the SEC gets a bit too much love – they both played at the highest level in college. Barwin did better.
by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions
Probably
I’d watch out for ascribing that idea to someone who thought it was a good idea to deal away a potential franchise QB.
- Rivers McCown
by riversmccown on Apr 26, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions
The problem with the Barwin pick
For me isn’t Barwin, it’s Sean Smith and Brian Cushing. If you pretend like Smith went at 45, I love Barwin. Likewise, I feel like since we drafted Cushing, Barwin looks to be a backup for Antonio Smith and Cushing, so I don’t see the value. Independently, I like him as a player and think he has a lot of potential. I like him much more than say, Brian Cushing.
Absolutely nothing wrong with stockpiling good DL's

Value
All over the place. I’m pretty comfortable with our work so far.
Apparently the name of the game is “versatility” for this draft.
by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions
But will we take them?
We’ve shown a real aversion to defensive backs, because you know, we’re stacked there.
I'm beginning to wonder if that's true.
It’s not like we’re the only team with a weak secondary that has passed on those safeties. It’s definitely a pretty weak safety group this year. And while I’d think that it’s definitely worth taking a flier on the #2-rated safety in the draft if he falls to the fourth, maybe Smithiak thinks it’s a wasted pick. If they think Brandon Harrison/Barber both have more potential (not to mention they’re probably more NFL-ready), there’s no real reason to take one.

Too rational
There’s a certain level of certainty in the Texan’s draft. They’re religious about drafting “fit” or so it seems.
IMO this means we are not hot on RBs Brown OR Jennings.

I'm not
So certain they’re really looking at RB. They may not think it’s that big a deal, or that a free agent pickup can do the trick.
what someone else said earlier
its possible wed rather get RB in 5th 6th or FA

Rounds 3-7
Honestly, I refuse to pass judgment on anyone taken in these rounds. No two teams have remotely similar boards at this point. Maybe they saw something they liked? I’ll wait until the season to even figure out who the hell this guy is.
