Ok. I dont know much about the guys left, aside from Michael Johnson (Which I dont see happening) and Andre Brown, but I look forward to learning about whoever we draft. Much like I am doing with Connor Barwin, a guy I had never even heard of before yesterday.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 26, 2009 8:24 AM CDT reply actions

Here you go

This might help. It’s a breakdown of players that should be drafted today that I like.

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 8:30 AM CDT up reply actions

Thanks, Transient. Good stuff.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 26, 2009 8:36 AM CDT up reply actions

I really hope Andre Brown is there when we pick…

by Mike Kerns on Apr 26, 2009 8:39 AM CDT up reply actions

That

would be awesome. I don’t think he will be though.

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 8:50 AM CDT up reply actions

this is where Smithiak brings it home

After a first day that garnered mixed reactions, if only for the Cushing pick, I’m ready for day two. I think we solidified our front seven, which is fine with me. And he can cut off the pony tail.

I want a RB in round 3, then I want two starting pro bowlers in the fourth round. After that, lets take some chances.

In Smithiak I trust.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

The Day After

I might hate the Cushing pick more than I did yesterday.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Haha

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 9:01 AM CDT up reply actions

Man, you guys feel about Cushing like I felt (and kinda still do) about Okoye in 2007.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 26, 2009 9:03 AM CDT reply actions

If By That You Mean

That the thought of Okoye makes you alternate between blinding rage and crushing sadness, then yes…that’s where I am with Cushing.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

by Tim on Apr 26, 2009 9:04 AM CDT up reply actions

I just was not ever satisfied with him. Especially that high in the 1st round.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 26, 2009 9:06 AM CDT up reply actions

I Liked The Okoye Pick

For two reasons—first, because I thought (and continue to think) it represented great value at No. 10 and second, because I thought it meant the end of Travis Johnson in Houston.

I’m still waiting for the latter to happen so I can sleep at night.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

by Tim on Apr 26, 2009 9:07 AM CDT up reply actions

The Okoye Pick

Was a lottery ticket that still might pan out. He’s still as young as most players in THIS draft.

Okoye

had FIVE AND A HALF SACKS AS A ROOKIE. That’s sick for a DT. People have such short memories.

Greene

Good, I like Brown better anyway

- Rivers McCown

by riversmccown on Apr 26, 2009 9:12 AM CDT reply actions

except that takes one option off the board

for those before us

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

by texanphil on Apr 26, 2009 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Ah, fuckballs.

I’d probably rather have Brown too, but I would have been just fine with nabbing Greene in the third as well. And any time a position we need comes off the board, it’s bad news bears.

by Nashmeister on Apr 26, 2009 9:18 AM CDT up reply actions

5 minutes between picks…still seems like longer.

by Mike Kerns on Apr 26, 2009 9:13 AM CDT reply actions

Anybody else get the gut feeling that the Cowboys will dick us over?

I think we might have to jump ahead of them to nab Rashad Johnson

Rather have a FS than a SS

But I’d settle for Vaughn too. At least it shows that the Texans brass realize that safety is an actual position

by Tim on Apr 26, 2009 9:41 AM CDT up reply actions

Very good thoughts, actually.

But I’m very worried that the quality RBs in this draft end pretty much at our pick. Maybe they could package a 4th and 5th to get another pick in the 3rd and get both.

by Nashmeister on Apr 26, 2009 9:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Rex Ryan looks like he's lost weight

Which means Smithiak is going Center

and will laugh will they prove all of us wrong.

by chrisjay84 on Apr 26, 2009 9:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Wouldn't have surprised me before today.

I thought Levitre might be on the board still. But with him, Mack, Unger, and Wood all gone, it’s not all that safe of a pick any more.

Analysis on Caldwell:

“A nice fit for the Texans’ zone blocking scheme who has the body control and athleticism to get to the second level and cut down defenders in space. Houston needed to add a bit more “pop” to their interior offensive line and Caldwell certainly fits the bill."

Though a bit annoyed if it signals the end of Myers. What did we give up for him? 6th rounder?

by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 10:04 AM CDT up reply actions

True

But Caldwell can swing to OG if we have an injury, and Myers can come in as a more-than-competent backup Center

RB's are fungible to the Kubiak/Shanahan system

by Shake on Apr 26, 2009 10:04 AM CDT reply actions

Not that I know anything about this center...

But if he can play, then I can’t complain. I’d love a back-up RB who can bring it, but an upgrade at center is going to make Slaton even better. And in all honesty, I thought weak interior line-play was the biggest deterrent to us turning yards into points last year.

And you can never have too many linemen; Myers isn’t a great starter, but he’ll be a very capable back-up.

I'm gonna make you come around

I’m already warming up to the pick. I’m picturing the sort of fluid, rotating, hybrid front seven we can put together with the bodies we have.

If Bush has an ounce of creativity we could come up with some vicious blitzes.

by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 10:27 AM CDT up reply actions

Off Topic....sort of

I just decided what would make me like/love the Cushing pick. If he takes a detour through Minnesoooota on his way to Houston, and throws his shoulder (or man boob) into Jared Allen’s knee(s). In public. And has someone video it.

So you're saying that now I have to think of some witty Sig that will be applicable across all the SBN sites? Go TexanHornStros!

The WR run

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 10:23 AM CDT reply actions

At least

We’re not the raiders.

by JimboTexan on Apr 26, 2009 10:27 AM CDT reply actions

True

For themost part, they’ve done terribly. Ayers is the only pick that I thought was good where they got it.

McDaniels is going to be TERRIBLE.

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

McDaniels already is terrible

And the Ayers pick was unspeakably bad.

- Rivers McCown

by riversmccown on Apr 26, 2009 10:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Don't Agree

I like ayers a lot, I think he’s going to be good. He was a beast at the snior bowl, against the best OT in the draft

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions

Ayers

9 sacks in 48 games. That is not a first round 4-3 DE. I think he busts hard.

- Rivers McCown

by riversmccown on Apr 26, 2009 10:35 AM CDT up reply actions

He didn't play

48 games. He didn’t start until his senior year, and he was a beast. You can call him a one year wonder if you want, but he did play extremely well in 2008.

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions

In that case

you must hate Connor Barwin too, he only played defense for one year as well

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 10:40 AM CDT up reply actions

12 sacks.

Pretty good for year one at DE

Also:

- Rivers McCown

by riversmccown on Apr 26, 2009 10:45 AM CDT up reply actions

I love Barwin

but there is no way that you can compare his 10 sacks in Conference USA to Ayers playing in the SEC. Plus, they probably took Ayers because he was great against the run, in the best run conference in college football.

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 10:46 AM CDT up reply actions

Cinci was a solid team

I think the SEC gets a bit too much love – they both played at the highest level in college. Barwin did better.

by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 10:47 AM CDT up reply actions

True

I like Barwin better, but just becasue he is better doeswn’t make Ayers terrible. I love that we got Barwin where we did.

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

Probably

I’d watch out for ascribing that idea to someone who thought it was a good idea to deal away a potential franchise QB.

- Rivers McCown

by riversmccown on Apr 26, 2009 10:48 AM CDT up reply actions

The problem with the Barwin pick

For me isn’t Barwin, it’s Sean Smith and Brian Cushing. If you pretend like Smith went at 45, I love Barwin. Likewise, I feel like since we drafted Cushing, Barwin looks to be a backup for Antonio Smith and Cushing, so I don’t see the value. Independently, I like him as a player and think he has a lot of potential. I like him much more than say, Brian Cushing.

by JimboTexan on Apr 26, 2009 10:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Ayers...

Is a prototypical 4-3 DE, no? Isn’t McDaniels switching to a 3-4?

by Nashmeister on Apr 26, 2009 10:33 AM CDT up reply actions

He's big enough

To play as a 3-4 DE, but some say he might switch to OLB which I’m not a fan of

Apparently the name of the game is “versatility” for this draft.

by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions

Very True

You know... for kids.

by Jake on Apr 26, 2009 10:37 AM CDT up reply actions

But will we take them?

We’ve shown a real aversion to defensive backs, because you know, we’re stacked there.

by JimboTexan on Apr 26, 2009 10:38 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm beginning to wonder if that's true.

It’s not like we’re the only team with a weak secondary that has passed on those safeties. It’s definitely a pretty weak safety group this year. And while I’d think that it’s definitely worth taking a flier on the #2-rated safety in the draft if he falls to the fourth, maybe Smithiak thinks it’s a wasted pick. If they think Brandon Harrison/Barber both have more potential (not to mention they’re probably more NFL-ready), there’s no real reason to take one.

by Nashmeister on Apr 26, 2009 10:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Do they have a “pick salesman” in every other NFL war room? They are just flat out raping other teams on trades this year.

DJ Moore 4th round hopefull

hes small but hes graded as a high second rounder, Im shocked he keeps falling and all these other corners are being taken. I thought it may be his height (5 9") but i checked up on all the corners drafted this round and most of them were 5 9" as well

by kevdiesel on Apr 26, 2009 11:10 AM CDT reply actions

They might take him for his value in the fourth

However – the Texans do have a history of liking bigger DBs. So it wouldn’t shock me if they passed.

by HoustonDiehards on Apr 26, 2009 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Lets get greedy, Smithiak.

- Rivers McCown

by riversmccown on Apr 26, 2009 11:12 AM CDT reply actions

Probably - but only by a round.

Not a lot of big DTs left.

I actually don’t think they’re going to draft a DT – but I was throwing it out there since we all want a big wide DT.

The big backs could still be on the board…no chance we DONT draft one of them in the fourth. DJ Moore and Andre Brown as our two 4th’s!! How solid would this draft be

Well we know the Cowboys won't take another RB right now

The Bills certainly might, though… but still – WORST case – one of Brown or Jennings is there.
