Not bashing Quin...
but seems like we didnt get good value with that pick. Probably could have gotten him in 5th or later. Hope they get their big back soon
Which Dream?
Watching this I feel like I’m looking at the Salvador Dali equivalent of an NFL Draft.

hoping for
Terrance Taylor or Andre Brown with next pick

Trades
Trades this late have always kind of confused me. Aren’t the players so similiar in skill that you can find at least 1 player that fits on your team at this point?
by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 12:08 PM CDT reply actions
Tend to Agree
Generally, the only way it makes sense is if you’re acquiring a future pick and/or there’s a guy you just LOVE.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
Which begs the question...
Your fridge is pre-loaded?
by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions
Oh, of course
My fridge and garage are both pre-loaded…..but there may be some who ran through their stock after Cushing yesterday
Well let's get it back
There’s a long way to go, y’all.

True Dat
And D.J. Moore remains on the board. Any way Smithiak goes DB-DB here?
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
Don't think so - but any chance they go another DE?
As in my crazy final mock scenario? Except instead of B. Williams/Melton, it could be Barwin/Sidbury?

I'd Love Sidbury
That’d bring a big smile to my face.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
About Moore:
“John McClain: Moore is 5-9 and he couldn’t break a 4.5. Not good. "
That’s an interesting stat. And by interesting I mean – dude you suck.

This pick...
…has to be a RB right? Right?
I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!

Not Necessarily
If Gartrell’s your man, you don’t need to burn a fourth rounder on him.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
Agree
I like Gartrell – but not in the fourth. If he’s gone by the fifth, I take Ogbannaya.

Yeah they quietly have had a very good draft. Bears will be dangerous next year.

Gartrell Johnson a round too soon.
That’s my fear – though I do like the guy and like him in the fifth, I wouldn’t like him much in the fourth.

I just
Don’t think they’re drafting an RB. It would please us too much.
I hope
That’s wrong. This guy is not OD, and Kubiak is arrogant if he thinks he can turn every 4th round TE into OD.
Ok then.
Someone’s getting axed in training camp.

What the shit
"I'm just looking forward to something great happening in the city of Houston" - Tracy McGrady
Still waiting...
He is more than likely a blocker
Our blocking tight end is Joel Dreesen…..I don’t think he inspires fear in anyone….
Hill
An outstanding blocking TE. Don’t think Daniels has anything to worry about.
A little strange when they resigned Dreesen this offseason. But a much more logical pick than Glover.
- Rivers McCown
i was hoping this was the reason...
they said they were gonna look for a blocking TE. My first research source I looked at made no mention of him being that guy so I wasnt too sure
6-5 262, great size

Really hurt. I just don’t get this pick given our other needs.
McClain keeps repeating that
he doesn’t think they think they need a starting safety.
Other than that, I think it’s arguable that they should go BPA.

It's possible
We just undervalue Barber and Wilson, it’s happened before, with Walter.
Welcome To Houston Post
for Hill is up on the main page.
Zuh?
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
I'm actually
Middle of the road on this pick. We did need a good blocking TE which Hill seems to be, but again it just seems like there were other players on the board.
You know... for kids.
ESPN Analysis on Quin....
Quin makes a quick diagnosis of plays and gets into strong initial position to make plays on the ball. He also takes good angles with the ball in flight and shows above-average ball skills. Although he’s undersized for the safety position he’s not afraid to throw his body around. However, he needs some tweaking to his overall footwork.
Haha John McClain just shut down his chat after the Hill pick...
…to “try and figure this one out”
Made Me Laugh Out Loud
And rec’d accordingly.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
ESPN Analysis on Hill...
Although Hill is extremely limited as an athlete his value comes from his ability as an inline blocker. In fact, he’s our top-rated rblocking tight end. He possesses brute strength at the point of attack and can push defenders off the ball
That Makes Me Happier
“Top-rated blocking tight end” has a nice ring to it. Question is whether you could’ve gotten him in the fifth or later.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
So clearly...
We’re addressing some red zone / short yardage issues. I’m ok with that.
by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 12:35 PM CDT up reply actions
I just wonder
Who the back in those situations is going tobe, they must have someone in mind in free agency or the later rounds.
Still three rounds
You can find a big bruising back somewhere. Jennings from Liberty is still there.
by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Well
That’s good. It’s just hard to get excited about the words extremely limited as an athlete…still, glad he’s got that going. Could be good for the running game.
the guy is huge..
6-5 262. Yea we needed a blocking tight end since bruener is gone. I guess the Texans are willing to reach a little to fill some needs at this point in the draft. I would rather have them stockpile BPA, but if this guy fills a need im OK with it. Big back in the 5th please!!!!
Sidbury to ATL

Draft Theme
I will say that the players we’ve taken suggest to me we’re in a “win now” mentality. I’m ok with that. If they think a blocking TE is going to help us more than a project DE… I’ll take their word for it.

We need it :-/
Our short yardage conversion rate was terrible. I think a good blocking TE is more useful than a big bruising back. The same way Caldwell is better than a 3rd round RB.
by DisplacedTexan on Apr 26, 2009 12:56 PM CDT up reply actions
no
then let’s use an eligible tackle on the end. blocking on the edge doesn’t help much, either, when you can’t crash it through the middle with a relatively light Slaton.

I gotta say, I NAILED the Antoine Caldwell pick. I think I deserve some props. http://www.atexansblog.com/2009/04/25/fuck-me-with-a-sandpaper-chainsaw/#comment-16191
Where’s our freakin’ RB? I wanted Andre Brown reeeeal bad. A blocking TE? Are you serious?
RBs left for us...
James Davis
Rashad Jennings
Chris Ogbannaya
I listed Peerman on my site, but I don’t think the Texans want him.

OB is a speedster

Ogbannaya is a great one-cut runner though.
Plus he’s like 220 pounds. PERFECT fit, IMO. Especially if we can get him in the sixth.

It's funny, if we get Jennings we'll all call Smithiak a genius
If we don’t, we’ll say they botched the Hill/Andre Brown deal.
Safety and RB
Can’t believe we haven’t addressed either yet. A fucking TE?
Glove projects as a CB or a S - but a FREE safety, apparently.
I would be okay with the Hill pick if we hadn’t re-signed Dreessen. I mean, wtf?
Chris - www.HoustonDiehards.com
by HoustonDiehards on Apr 26, 2009 1:03 PM CDT up reply actions
Texans text msg service called him a CB
Although we probably don’t have room at CB.
Where have you seen that he’s going to be a FS? NFLDraftscount called him that, but he’s pretty short for a FS, isn’t he?
Just one place I saw it
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players/1115231
And I think it was also mentioned in his NFL.com profile, but don’t hold me to that.

"I'm just looking forward to something great happening in the city of Houston" - Tracy McGrady

If it’s not too much work, Smithiak
- Rivers McCown

Needs to be one of those two in the fifth.
Chris - www.HoustonDiehards.com

Isn't Rashad a little too big?
Aren’t we looking in the 225 lb range? http://views.washingtonpost.com/theleague/predraft/2009/04/in-the-cattle-call-that.html
FWIW, Slaton had a bad speed score too.
But yeah, Brown was the better pick.
Still, rather have too big than too small at this point.
- Rivers McCown
by riversmccown on Apr 26, 2009 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions
This is true.
NT and RB, I never would have bet that we didn’t address either position before the fifth round.
Not too shocked about NT
Wasn’t wild about any of the NT’s this year.
RB…they do tend to be fungible in the Shanahan/Kubiak system, so while I’m not impressed by the waiting, I’m not surprised either.
- Rivers McCown
by riversmccown on Apr 26, 2009 1:30 PM CDT up reply actions
But with a 4.5 40!
Still – I think if they really coveted him, they would have pulled the trigger in the fourth.
If not him, James Davis or wait another round and snag Ogbonnaya.
If not one of those? I have no idea.

How bout Ricky Jean-Francois in the 6th?
Once thought to be a 1st round talent, could still be there in the 6th
We're going to get a complimentary back
From Steph:
"…here’s the laundry list of positions that would be handy:
- “complementary back, at some point, would be nice.”
- A running back can be taken in any round, including high if they are rated that way.
- “you would really benefit from another pass rusher-type outside guy.” Tweener OLB/DE guys are intriguing this draft.
- maybe a “situational pass rusher,” depending on a bunch of stuff.
- “I think you’ve got to take corners all the time.”
- Maybe a late round quarterback, given the Bill Walsh theory of developing QBs or maybe not.
- Impact player in the first round, solid players in second and third.
- Contract issues with current players do not affect their draft board."
Sounds more like James Davis than Jennings to me

Dont worry...this pick will make more sense when they draft a TE in the 6th and 7th..
Just kidding..but seriously?! This draft is all about versatility…the texans worked him out as long snapper so maybe thats the icing of why they got him?
Love it
Versatile. Another weapon for Kubiak to play with. A RB will be there in the sixth whether its the Col St guy or Ogbonnaya. A different service than the blocking tight end. Can play FB and actually catch (Leach’s GB catch not withstanding).

I am thinking that Smithiak have just as many names floating around at RB as we do
So they think the board is saturated with them and that they can wait.
I... I just don't know what to make of this
I really liked the Casey kid but didn’t think he was an option for us. We are certainly going with a versatility theme, aren’t we? When was the last time a team drafted two TEs the year after their starting TE was a Pro Bowler?
Casey is super versatile. I hope we don’t try any Wildcat BS with him, though.
