Houston Texans At OTAs: Day One
Your Houston Texans completed the first day of their "voluntary" organized team activities today. Some high points and thoughts from the link in the previous sentence:
-Still no sign of Dunta Robinson. His absence is not yet costing him a paycheck, so we'll see how committed Dunta is once the ol' bank account starts feeling the pain of principle.
-I remain a skeptic of Brian Cushing until further notice, but I am pleased to see him speak so reverently of DeMeco Ryans.
-Memo to Dunta: DeMeco wants a new deal too, yet he's at OTAs and doing a rather swell job endearing himself to his teammates and the organization:
"It just lets them know that I care about them and I’m here to win games, and that’s what it’s all about," Ryans said. "We’re here to accomplish the goal of winning games. With me being here and all the other guys seeing me here, that just lets them know that that’s what I’m about. I’m about winning, winning first. That’s what’s it’s going to take for us to move forward as a franchise is to start winning games."
See, Dunta? You can be both resolute and unselfish. Those two qualities do not have to be mutually exclusive. That's not so hard, is it?
-James Casey is already turning heads. I am getting more and more excited to see how Kyle Shanahan incorporates him into the offense. A guy that talented and multifaceted is going to be hard to keep off the field.

Kubiak
all but dismissed the wildcat scheme when asked about it in press conferences. Although we certainly have the tools to incorporate it now I doubt we will see the Texans implement it in any serious way next season.
This year will be more more about working the rookies into the Texans offense, altering it to work around them won’t come for another year or two.

Dunta
I though I read on the official site that he told Kubiak he’d be there for the first day of training camp?

Turns out its just something Brooke Bentley said Kubiak said...
I don’t know if it carries any weight?
“Dunta didn’t come to OTAs, which are not mandatory workouts. But coach Gary Kubiak said that Dunta assured him that he will be at the first mandatory workout, which are mini-camps in the middle of June” Brooke Bentley

I would love to see...
the FO immediately reward DeMeco for being a stand-up MF’er, and get his contract done before they break this OTA. Because fuck Dunta, that’s why.

Dunta and DeMeco
To be fair to Dunta, he is NOT currently under contract. If he shows up to the OTA’s without signing the franchise tender, gets injured, the Texans can rescind the tender and he’ll get nothing. If he signs it, then he loses any leverage whatsoever.
DeMeco is under contract, although wants a bigger contract.
So there is a difference.
That said, if the 2 of them got offered the contracts that have been reported, I think they should have taken them, because those were really good offers all things considered.

Appreciate The Distinguishing, But I Disagree
You’re right…DeMeco is under contract, and Dunta’s not. Yet I totally disagree that Dunta loses any leverage by signing a tender that would guarantee him almost $10,000,000.00 this year. In my book, Dunta has no leverage right now. He has no choice but to sign the tender, because there’s no way he’s sitting the 2009 season out and leaving $10 mil on the table. Realistically, the Texans hold all the cards.
I actually think Dunta would increase his leverage for getting a long-term deal if he signed the tender; like DeMeco, he’d be showing the team he’s committed to them. I don’t believe there’s anything in the CBA that would keep the team from tearing that tender up when they signed him to a long-term deal.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Tear up the franchise tender...
Then, he’d prolly bitch that we were screwing him out of $10 Million that was HIS!
As you can likely tell, I’m pretty upset with Dunta right now.

Re: James Casey
Sportsradio 610 interviewed Kevin Walter this afternoon and when asked about Casey, he said that he is really strong and in his opinion should have been a 1st day pick. Not sure I would agree with that, but he easily could have been long gone by the time we snagged him at #152 in the 5th round. Walter said that he runs real well and is a weight room star. Said he had 315 on the bench press and he was “throwing it up there like it was nothing. You don’t see a whole lot of guys do that”. I too am excited to see how Kubiak works him into the game plan; can’t keep his skills on the sidelines for very long.
