A question from a Jaguar Fan

Hello Texans,

I'd like to get your opinion on the strengths and weaknesses you see with the Jaguars coning into the 2009 season.  I'm curious to get an "outsider's" perspective.

From my perspective, I think the Texans have done a good job upgrading their roster over the past couple years and I think you guys are THE team on the move in the division.  If Schaub can stay healthy, I beleive you should make a run at  the playoff's this year.  If your QB goes down - you're screwed.

Thanks in advance.

Sorry

About the negative flap, OGN. The Texans may well be the team to beat in our division this year.

You - negative - now there's irony for you :-)

No worries mate! Until the Colts are vanquished, They’re still dangerous – but I’ve liked what the Texans have done over the past couple of seasons. The Titans, I believe will take a step back this year, especially if Vince returns as the starting QB – they got hit hard in FA.

I’ve been very criitical of the Jags last year and I feel that the critism was well founded. This year, they appear to be moving in the right direction. They still have holes to fill. Getting rid of Shack was a good step. I’ve liked Gene’s moves overall. I do question him giving up a 2nd round pick (next year) to grab a 3rd round this year – we’ll have to wait and see if Cox warrants that move. He addressed the #1 need on this team – O-line.

Assuming the Oline improves, I believe our biggest weakness right now is D-line. Henderson is getting some miles put on and we have NO pass rush. That absolutely kills us. maybe one of last year’s rookies will step up – we’ll have to wait and see.

Is Garrard really the answer at QB?

I don’t think so, and I think your problems start with him. You guys seemed to have decent receivers, and obviously a good running game with MJD. Will he be able to stay healthy now that he will presumably take more of the load with the departure of Taylor?

Pass rush? What happened to that Harvey guy who held out? Will he be good? What about run defense? How will the o-line rebound from all the injuries they had last year?

Those are the questions I’d be asking. We really should have swept you guys last year – Gary Kubiak takes the blame for not calling time out when you lined up in an obvious fake punt formation when we played in Jacksonville, which led to a touchdown that proved to be the difference (that and that horrible 4th-and-8 scramble by Garrard).

In the end, we beat you in Houston because your line play was bad on both sides of the ball – Mario ate Garrard’s soul and you had no answer for Steve Slaton. You’ll have to improve at the line of scrimmage if you want to contend, imo.

David Garrard's problems last year

were twofold. First, we had no O-line. The O-line lost depth with the shooting of Reggie Collier, we lost our best O-lineman – LG Manuwai to injury in week one, our best center was also injured and getting long in the tooth. As a result we had zero running game. Our WR corp were the worst in the league last year – filled with 1st round busts. They couldn’t get open and when they did they lead the league in dropped passes. I think Garrard is better than average but can’t do it alone. A legit critisim of him from last year was that he held the ball too long resulting in sacks and to’s.

Our new GM blew up the WR corp from last year (thank GOD!!!). he still has a few more guys to replace but that will take time. We’re excited about our rookie WR, but they’ll take some time to develop. I like the Holt signing. His better playing days are behind him, but he’s an all pro with great work ethic and high character – he should be a great influence on the WR’s.

I share your question about MJD – can he withstand the pounding. He’s small and very physical, can he hold up as THE man for entire season????

I agree with you that it comes down to line play. I beleive our O-line will be greatly improved from last year. D-line is another question all together. We had a lot of holes on tnis team from last year. I blasted Harvey last year. I was not enamoured with his pick – he had a history of taking plays off and disappearing altogether in games while at UF. And I beleive that continued in his rookie year. He was completely dominated by your rookie LT in last year’s Nationally televised game in your crib. He’ll improve but never be big time in my opinion (I hope I’m wrong) I personally thinki we need another draft or two to really contend.

Thanks much for your input.

Took plays off, disappeared in games

That was the rap on Mario too. For our sake, I hope it holds up for Harvey. :)
