BREAKING NEWS: Texans Sign Rex Grossman...WTF?
Your Houston Texans agreed to terms with QB Rex Grossman on a one-year, $620,000 contract.
We're guessing that Rex isn't being brought in to compete with Dan Orlovsky, who the Texans will pay about $3M this year. Grossman, 29, holds an awful career completion rate of 54.2 and a weak 6.4 career YPA. Most likely, he will push Alex Brink to be another insurance policy behind starter Matt Schaub, who's missed 10 games with injuries over the last two seasons. Via Rotoworld.
All I have to say is...what???

Excuse Me?
I don’t even know what to say. I’m as confused as a goat on astroturf.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Forgive me, but..
That is one of the greatest analogies I have ever read. Maybe I’m too much of a city boy, but Tim, I commend you.

Thanks, Jason
And welcome to the site. I can’t take credit for it; I first heard it several years ago from a colleague who had a talent for spinning phrases like that.

I don't care who it is.
If he’s not ancient and he’s played in a Superbowl, then it’s a solid signing for a mere $600,000.

I'd rather be starting Rexy than a guy the Lions
choose Jon Kitna over, and benched in favor of Dante Culpepper.

I'd rather start the guy who led the piss-poor lions in DYAR
than the guy who got benched in favor of Kyle Orton.

Orton>Kitna and Culpepper
and I don’t think it’s too out there to say Orlosky had better weapons (or really weapon).
I didn’t watch a lot of the Lions, but from what I saw of Orlosky the main strategy was “lob it to Megatron”.

Is that going to be much different than “lob it to AJ”?
by cubic on Jun 11, 2009 7:08 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
remember we're comparing Orlosky to Grossman
I think Grossman wins a lobbing contest. Grossman is all about lobbing it deep. He eats, drinks and breathes the deep ball.

Not So Much Bummed
As confused. Why sign Grossman when Kubes typically carries only 2 QBs on the roster and you know those two QBs are going to be Schaub and Orlovsky? Is Rex just a camp body? Is this really the best gig a one-time Super Bowl starting QB could get—No. 3 QB for the Texans?

I said this at my place already, but...
… if someone else can take over the long-snapping duties, it opens the door for three QBs to stick on the 53-man. That said – if a position player like Casey or Dresseen DOES take over the LS duties, I’d rather keep an extra DB, LB, or DT than an extra QB.
I really think this is the plan – otherwise if they just wanted a camp arm, they would have brought Shane Boyd back in, or someone of his ilk.

Great Thought, Chris
I hadn’t thought of that. And I’m in complete agreement about the roster spot—I’d much rather it be burned on a DB, DL, or OL instead of a third quarterback.

why not make a camp body
push the starter and the #2, and maybe have a shot at giving them some advice?
I think this dude would be a huge improvement in camp over Boyd or Brink, even if he’s just a camp body signing.
For league minimum, what if he beats out Orlovsky? Dan’s not exactly a lock for the #2. I say get all the competition you can, especially at that price.

I don't hate it...
He went to the super bowl…for 600,000 if we lose 2 QB’s in the season I have no problem with him playing cause at the point you have to be asking yourself…2 QBs down…really?

Another Great Point
But…at that time, there was still talk of a possible Sage trade, which would have made Q. Gray the No. 2 had it come to fruition. No such talk this year; we just signed Orlovsky.

I'm with Phil here
For league minimum, I don’t ever see a problem with bringing in a player for camp. Especially if that player has started previously.
If we had paid $14 more than minimum, then I might be pissed.

WTF???
Why in the hell did the Texans sign Rex Grossman? That’s why I call the Texans BFI…..straight garbage!!!!
by Pissed on Jun 11, 2009 6:38 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Why?
Exactly what is wrong with paying a guy $600k to be the third string qb? It’s virtually no money, and he’s experienced. It’s not like he’s our starting qb or anything. We did this last year with Quinn Gray and then cut him before the season started.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we did the same with Sexy Rexy.

Grossman is a good, safe, solid signing
This is a good move in my opinion, a positive move for the Texans. Why, I hear you asking. Well, I’m glad you asked that.
Grossman, a former first round pick of the Bears, has been in the league for six seasons. Granted, he’s been hurt in many of those campaigns, but he is a veteran quarterback. Surely Grossman can be a caretaker for the Texans if he is forced into action. Handing to Steve Slaton, throwing to Andre Johnson and Owen Daniels in the warm weather of Houston has surely got to be easier than handing to Matt Forte, throwing to Devin Hester and anyone else on the Bears at Soldier Field. With an (hopefully) improved defense and a quarterback who is not prone to doing the helicopter, the Texans could win a few games (or more) with Rex behind center.
As much as we hope he will, incumbent Matt Schaub has yet to remain healthy for a full season. Having a solid, veteran presence below Matt on the depth chart is essential. Dan Orlovsky, if Rex does not sign, is the current #2 QB in Houston. Let’s not lose sight of the fact he played (and not all that well) for the hapless (not to mention win less) Lions last season. This is not to say Dan couldn’t come in and play well. Again, being in a stronger offense will undoubtedly help Dan play better. But, he has only been in the NFL since 2005.
Bottom Line: this is strictly a move for veteran depth behind a quarterback who has yet to prove his durability. For a team with playoff hopes and a coach (possibly) on the hot seat, 2009 is a big season. Having a veteran backup QB is a strong move.

The funny thing...
is that Rex has a career 19-11 won loss record. Obviously he’s a winner! Stats and qb rating be damned Oh forgive me, I keep forgetting team win loss records and ignoring inept qb play only applies to a certain Tennessee Titans qb.

Truer words...
I used to bring that up a lot back when people were slobbing VY’s nob. Not only are Grossman’s career numbers better, but so is his win-loss record, not to mention he has actually won a play-off game (and started in a superbowl). But for some reason, the VY advocates always conveniently ignored that.
It’s fun to do with Tarvaris Jackson as well.

He is a camp body unless
there is some kind of freak accident where Jared Allen just happens to be in town and trips and dives into Schaubs knee. Other than that level of ridiculousness, Rex “F**k it, lets chuck it” Grossman is gone before the season.

from a Bears fan...
Grossman is a good signing for you guys as a backup. You have a QB who led his team to the Super Bowl and has done some good things. He has completely lost his confidence but I think Kubiak can help him with. He definitely needs a change of scenery. I think he will be an excellent backup and came off the bench last year to lead us to a win. I definitely think Grossman will win the #2 job. He is definitely an upgrade over ‘Safety Orlovsky’.

Rex vs. Olov
You guys should check out the 2nd half of the last game between the bears and lions. I was at that game and Grossman came in after Orton went down meaning your now backup qbs played against eachother then. Rex actually sparked a comeback to win he game but Forte did most of the work

I feel alot better about our team now
I’m sure either Dan OR Rex could find some rythym passing to Houston’s receiving core. Keep in mind both Chicago and Detroit had terrible receivers.
If Schaub goes down, I still expect Houston to be a playoff team

On the face of it, I don't see a downside...
to me it all depends on his lockeroom presence…If he’s a good guy, a veteran leader who accepts his b/u role and can compete, share and develop with Dan & Matt, then I say he’s a great sign…if he’s a drain or a headcase in the lockeroom…that would be a bad signing. I’ll give Kubes the benefit of the doubt. I can’t blame him for wanting to give the guy a test drive…worst case, we Quinn him…best case Kubes can resurrect another career ala Jake Plummer. Buying low, is a proven investment strategy, especially in commodities that you can potentially improve yourself.

I've seen a few comments that it's ONLY $620K
While that amount of money, the veteran minimum I think I read somewhere, is not a lot, we are sweting it out trying to sign some star caliber players. If we throw away a little here, a little there, on players who have little chance of contributing, then this is not necessarily a wise move. Who knows how far apart we are with OD andDemeco right now on long term deals? I would much rather see the money given to players that we know will contribute to the bottom line.

yea,
i was thinking that today…y sign Orlovsky for that money if that could help sign ryans and OD?
y both rex and orlovsky signings and no money to OD and Ryans…
would have rather wanted just one of these and a signed up OD/Ryans, than this
well maybe we can have 2 qbs and both signed

Veteran Minimum is worth it
I know 90% of the people here are confident about Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky, but Schaub has had his share of injuries and Dan has a poor track record in his fledgling career.
Hash it out all you want but neither of them are proven franchise starters. Grossman isn’t and probably won’t ever be either. But having three possible NFL starters (obviously with varrying degrees of potential) is better than two. Especially at the QB position, 620k is a small price to pay. As TT and the big banner of the site says “In Smithiak we trust”, maybe they don’t trust Schaub’s health as much as the PR makes it out to be. On the rare chance that Schaub is injured again and Orlovsky can’t get his act together for whatever reason…it is very imporbable but completely possible, having a tried playoff QB passing to the best receiving crew of his life would be a godsend.
As for OD or Demeco…if they are complaining about .5% of their multimillion dollar contracts then f@%& them. They better be pitching a fit and alienating their fan base for more money than that. If anything it should be argued that we shouldn’t have signed Orlovsky, he’s coming in at something like 5 times the price… Neither of them could succeed with bad offenses, and I have as much faith in super bowl failure Rex as I do him. At least Rex won some games.

Amen
Pretty much nuff said. Remember. The the best reciever for Rex was Hester(after Muhammed left) who is a DB and return man to begin with. They always say that DBs were receivers who weren’t tall enough or didn’t have the hands. And he could throw a deep ball and with AJ to jump for it looking at at least a threat to pull the Defense away from Slaton for a play or two.

No argument here that we overpaid for Orlovsky
His cap figure this year is $2.55 Mil. & $3.05 Mil in 2010. That’s an expensive insurance policy for someone who has done little in the league. Had we not signed Dan, the deal for Rex would be much easier to rationalize. As suggested by Chris @ Diehards, this may signal that Danno has not been real impressive so far and Kubiak is not entirely comfortable with him as the QB2.
