Every Coaches Dream?…No Thank You!
This opinion is brought to you by a Texans fan.
Pro Football Weekly writer Matt Sohn posted his latest news story today. He says that a Chris Johnson-Steve Slaton bond has been established. Comparisons to Bird and Magic, Sonny and Cher, and Siegfried and Roy, aside; there is a lot of truth to what he says and it is no secret to those that peruse this blog that because of the Oiler/Titan historical ties to Houston and the fact that they play in the same division, this kind of comparison is a natural. The writer also points out that they both excelled at the collegiate level, both are 23, and both are second year players coming off of equally successful rookie seasons.
The comparison is there to be seen. The rivalry is a natural one. However, that is where their similarities end.
Seems Chris Johnson has been sipping the Me Kool-Aid in the off-season. Over the last several months, Johnson has strived to distance himself from his running partner, Lendale White…the other half of Smash and Dash, where White is Smash and Johnson is Dash. Johnson has taken to the world of Twitter, where he has requested that his fans Tweet him and give him ideas of how he can distinguish himself with a unique and attention-grabbing TD celebration after each score, which I imagine he is expecting many. I’m sure Coach Fisher and teammate White are just shaking their heads over this.
But, Johnson didn’t stop there. In his effort to disassociate himself from sharing any credit with White, he no longer wants to be known as one half of Smash and Dash. Now, he wants to be called "Every Coaches Dream", which leaves me wondering…WTH! Yes, Johnson goes on to compare himself to "Eric Dickerson and those types of guys" so, I suspect his teammates, and not just Lendale White, will give him a huge pat on the back to help congratulate him for reaching Hall of Fame status in his own mind after just one season.
Meanwhile, in contrast to Johnson, the writer rightfully describes our Steve Slaton, as a guy who has spent his off-season working to put on another 10 pounds of muscle…a guy who is concerned with continuing to read his blockers…a guy who is concerned with perfecting his ability to protect the QB. And, regarding any thoughts of celebrating after another TD, Steve sums it all up with this quote, "I just give the ball to the ref, act like I’ve been there before."
I have to say, I was a huge fan of Steve Slaton before he ever put on a Texans uniform and he continues to exemplify the team attitude that I think will transfer into great success for this team. Steve Slaton is the kind of player that is ready for success and will eventually earn his way into at least the Texans team hall of fame, and not talk his way into it!

Good post
As a CFB fan, I knew Slaton would be a fine football player. He had the “it” factor, a smooth, gliding style of running the ball, combined with a modicum of humility and a strong work ethic. I still don’t want him carrying the ball 25+ times a game, though. We’ll get more mileage out of our backs with a committee instead.
Godd stuff
Wow Johnson likes himself a lot!
My dilema is on my fantasy team I drafted both of these guys last year. But I also have Adrian Peterson and can only keep one player at a position, guess I have to let them walk.
It was fun deciding who to play each week last year.
You had both Slaton
and Chris Johnson? I’d go with Slaton given the choice. As of now he has no definite back to poach his carries. CJ on the other hand has Fat Ass LenDale White stealing goal line carries.

Favoritism Aside
From a fantasy aspect, I would consider the package that each player comes with. In Steve Slaton’s situation, he is on a team with a solid passing attack, which I would say will only enhance his rushing stats because the opposing defenses can’t load the box against the Texans. In contrast, the Titans have Kerry “Get Smashed” Collins at QB, which allows opposing teams to load the box,…because let’s face it, opposing teams will be daring Collins to be the one that tries to burn them…and we all know, that probably won’t be happening. For this reason, I am giving Slaton the nod this year…serious! And, for all the right reasons, we know that Slaton has done the right things over this off-season to set himself up to improve on last season.
It will happen

in watching football as a game between the offensive line and the defensive line. just a suggestion…
Dre setting the example
Andre has proven you don’t have to have a big mouth to get respect. and Slaton is following that example.
This is the right attitude for the offence to have.
I'm a huge Titans fan
But I have to agree. Chris Johnson is acting like an ass. I mean, he may well be the fastest running back of all time, but the Titans win as a TEAM
I already had
very low opinions on CJ but i think this coupled with what he calls a “Hair Style” flatlines any sort of respect i may have had.
Looking forward to not having an 8-8 year!
Head to Head
September 21 @ Tennessee – Chris Johnson 16 carries for 74 yards
Steve Slaton 18 carries for 116 yards
December 14 @ Houston – Chris Johnson 13 carries for 65 yards
Steve Slaton 24 carries for 100 yards
But you don't understand
Chris Johnson is in the Hall of Fame already. Seriously. Look it up.

...the team attitude that I think will transfer into great success for this team
Too true, Rip.
This team reminds me of the old Packers in that attitude. They are together. They don’t write their own press. Even the contract disputes have been kept private; each player speaking only good things about the team, coach, and their desire to remain a part of what is happening here.
Andre’s promo two years ago: “I don’t do a lot of talking…” Then he shoots a football out of a machine like 100 yards, runs downfield and catches it, turns to the camera and says: “enough said.” Well…that sums this team up.
With all the self-centered BS throughout the league, it’s gratifying to have a group of professionals like this to stand behind. When they make it to the Big Show, Houston Fans can take great pride in the way they got there.
