Suggestion on the Oilers History/Uniforms
I wrote a few belated responses, in bfd's homage-post to Bud Adams, about what to do about the Oiler uniform incident that recently took place, but since it is not on page one anymore (for me) few are looking at it and most will not. Anyways, to summarize my rant, I thought something should be done about it and I even mentioned a lawsuit against Bud Adams and the Titans organization in an attempt to first get them to stop wearing the Oilers unis and two, to give us our history back. Well, I have just thought about that over lunch and while downing my chicken curry, which was excellent BTW, I came up with what I thought was a BETTER and more doable idea!
Here's my idea!
I don't think that Reliant Stadium has an Oilers area in it. Not even sure they have room for that, but regardless, the idea goes forward. What if....we get the Tennessee Titans and the Houston Texans organizations together on this, WITH THE FANS, with the City of Houston, with the NFL, the former players,...with everyone who really cares!!! The base idea is this: In Reliant Stadium, with the blessing and effort of ALL involved, a "Houston Oilers History Hall" is created. Think about it as an opportunity to mend some bridges that seemed to be busted beyond repair. Think about it as an opportunity to return some history of the Oilers to the fans and the city that care about it. Think about is as an opportunity for the NFL to step up in good faith with deserving recognition of the city of Houston. Just think about it!
I will say no more, but I hope that somehow, some way the participants in the BRB get behind this. I have no personal ties to the teams, the NFL or the City of Houston and I only know the people of BRB from these posts. I am not always the most tactful poster, but I think I put out some thoughtful posts at times, and I think this one may be my best one.
There is much more involved in this idea and I think the people here are qualified to take the idea and make it grow into something meaningful.
It is time, folks! Serious! This is a compromise but what can be better? I can't think of it.

Maybe it is because...
I was to young to remember the oilers all that well..maybe it is my hate for Tennessee, and maybe it is because my friend shoved it in my face last year when Tennessee beat us…but I say screw Tennessee…they can have the Oilers history…it is time for the Texans to make their own.
I agree with you, schillingb, and with one SB title our little expansion team will have a lead on the Oilers/Tits…
But I also think this would be a beautiful gesture towards all the former (and current?) Oiler diehards, out there. Oiler fans deserved so much better than what they still have to endure.
sucks.....
as i was watching the game, i thought how cool it would’ve been if these texans could have worn the oilers uniforms of old…. and it just sucks that we cant retire warren moon’s jersey, or earl cambell, or any of the other greats we had here in houston. and who knows? maybe bud being an old smug bastard did the whole oiler uniform thing to throw it in our face considering all the problems the current titan team is having… still sucks either way.
I HATED to see Tenn. wearing the Oilers uniforms, and really wish we could have the great Oiler’s jersey’s hung up on the rafters at Reliant….Campbell, Mathews, Brazille, etc. The fact is that Bud Adams owns the rights to the “Houston Oilers” name(at least that’s my understanding). We can’t do anything without either buying the rights from him or paying for their use….and that would likely piss me off more. I’m sure we could get away with a “History of Football in Houston” kind of thing, but the Texans can’t use the Oiler name or image. I heard when we we’re awarded a team that McNair tried to get the rights to the Oiler name, but that Satan’s offspring wouldn’t let it happen. I have no idea if that’s true or not. We’re the Texans now, and I’m fine with that….but I still really hate Bud Adams.
Even if your too young, Oiler history is Houston history and has nothing to do with methopotamia.

I def. see your point, I was speaking on my own behalf and opinion though. If I were speaking on behalf of all of Houston I would have to say yes we deserve the rights to that history…but as for me I don’t care for it because like I said I was to young..sorry for not being clear on that…before the Texans I cheered for the Broncos because that is where I used to live…so the Texans are the only Houston Football team I know…I can see how people are pissed off about Tennessee wearing the Oilers Jerseys though…screw Adams, screw Tennessee, and screw Dunta =}
I see your point
schillingb is right. For the city it is a good thing. For the Texans fran., it is not. As a fran. you want your own thing going on, not another teams thing going on in YOUR stadium, even more so a div. rival.——Good but, bad. As a true TEXAN, as painfull as it is, I would have to say NO….. Let us make our own history!
Okay, interest doesn't seem very high
I guess it’s easier and more fun to just MF Bud Adams every time he runs out those Oiler unis…meanwhile, I’m just throwing this out there…what if the Texans and Titans got together and decided it was a good idea to do what I suggested and it had the support of the City of Houston, the NFL and the former Oiler players? This is not a poll, so you’ll have to write something if you….oh fuck it! Forget it!
It will happen
I wouldn't say there isn't much interest
Alot of people agree with me when I mention the Houston Oilers name and compare it with the Texans, which you have to admit isn’t the greatest name for a team. Alot of people would love it if Houston’s football team was called the Oilers in a manner mirroring what happened in Cleveland when the Browns left and became the Ravens. Bud Adams is the problem here. To set up an Oilers memorial in Reliant, you’d have to get his permission, which he may not sell at any price just to screw the people of Houston. If he was willing to go along with it, you’d have to pay an entry fee, and I’m sure Bud Adams would insist on receiving all the income. Why would McNair agree to that because that’s just allowing Adams to poach some of his income? It’s just not feasible; in fact, it sounds reprehensible. It’s best just to turn a blind eye to all things in Tennessee. They’ll learn to hate him too if he lives long enough. For starters, it’d be wonderful if the Texans could start whipping that team twice a year.
The true test in the life of a Texans fan is how gracefully you endure it.
High road
Bud should take the high road and necogiate some fair deal by which the Texans can buy back the Oiler name, image and history. No one in Tennessee gives a damn about Earl Campbell, Warren Moon or any of the other Oilers greats.
The Low Road is More Fun
Let’s make Bud really regret ever having stuck it to us. I say we have build a giant, obscene effigy of Bud Adams out of old car tires and railroad ties, before every game the Titans play in Reliant. There’s plenty of open space where Astroworld was located. Then we burn it to the ground in a spectacle of wild excess, loud music, and fireworks. Sort of Guy Fawkes Night meets Burning Man Festival. Then we charge across the bridge and into Reliant to watch the game. The Titans will be too afraid to even take the field.
I say...
fuck it, lets just pretend the tits have always been in tennesee and focus on pounding them twice a year. I am over it!
GO TEXANS!!!!
This is the year.......

certainly
Though it’s fair to say that some of us had grown attatched to the Ohlers, what had they ever done for us, besides break hearts, really? The recent stuff is simply more of the same. Let Possum Holler enjoy their team-on-the-road-to nowhere. Until they decide to go “somewhere” again, and relocate. Perhaps, out to LA?
Besides, deep steel blue is much more appealing, than baby blue.
there is no "I" in "team"...but there is a "me"
I literally became very depressed....
when the oilers left. I might still have feelings if the franchise simply did not exist any longer, but I’m completely emotionally ( from a sports standpoint) attached to my Texans now. I cannot EVER remember feeling good when an oiler season ended. Even though our Texans haven’t had postseason anything I’m still end each season with a sense of optimism. I understand that playoff appearenced will add up to season ending losses, but I will bitch and complain and still wear my Texans love on my sleeve.
FUK THE TITS!!!
GO TEXANS!!!
GO TEXANS!!!!
This is the year.......
Totally agree
The players and memories from those teams may have been the children involved in a divorce between the city of Houston and Bud Adams, but I have no problem neglecting them forever and spoiling my new family to embarrassing extents.
Questions
I wish Houston would have kept the name “Oilers” – was that an option? Especially after Tennessee discarded the name.
Also, why did Cleveland get to keep the “Browns” name for their new franchise? And does Baltimore claim “Browns” history (or Colts history, for that matter) or just Ravens?
I guess, when all is said and done, Houston sports history belongs to Houston, but our current team has absolutely nothing to do with the Oilers – that history has been written and is now gone forever.
Tonight I'm Gonna Party Like It's 1975. Don Hardeman ROCKED!
If my memory serves me
Cleveland negotiated with Modell and the NFL to keep their name and guarantee an expansion team that would retain the Browns history. Houston did not have any such deal in place, and Adams kept all rights to the Oilers history, uniforms and whatever else was involved. I’m pretty sure that’s how it went down.
The City of Cleveland held a trump card
They owned the lease rights that required the Modell’s Browns to play all their home games in Cleveland Stadium and could take that to court and win. Of course, Modell wasn’t going to do that and play to an empty stadium in Cleveland, so he gave up the name, colors and history. I don’t know as much about the Adams Oilers situation, but they skipped town with all of the history and rights to the name and colors. How do you get that back? One option is to try to sue, but not sure if it is worth the expense for anyone. My suggestion is to find a way to compromise, but that only works if everyone wants to go along, as I laid out in my plan above. Based on the overall response by the people on this blog, I would say the fanbase support is not where it would need to be, therefore, I would summarize the effort to get both teams, the NFL, the City of Houston and the former players to go along with it would be insurmountable. Ultimately, I would think the fans have to create the demand.
It will happen
I am a huge Oiler fan
but I absolutely hate the Titans. I would not want any of the Oiler stuff in Reliant Stadium unless we owned the rights to the name, history, etc. Since we do not I believe that real Oiler fans will just have to remember what was and move on with the Texans. I don’t like seeing the Titans in our uniforms either but to think that we should welcome that kind of behavior in Houston is not a good thing either. I hope we spank their ass at least twice and hopefully three times this year (playoff win vs. Titans would be awesome).
