Texans 16, Chiefs 10

Was it meaningless? Almost definitely. Still...1-0, baby! Watch out, 1972 Miami Dolphins!

Thoughts on the preseason opener for your 2009 Houston Texans?

yo

Here are some of mine:

    * Mario Williams at LDE and Antonio Smith at RDE? Did I see that right?
    * Also, it appeared that the general scheme looked the same as last year? As I started thinking about it, I was disappointed. But, and I even said it on Nuno’s show, that we need to wait until Week 1 to break out the big guns. Still, it’s hard to contain my excitement.
    * Did “Evil Genius” Frank Okam grow a pair? And did I see him hustle down a play from behind? He looked like a man who wants a starting job, and with him at NT over DelJuan Robinson or Travis Johnson, I see good things.
    * Rashad Butler looked excellent tonight. He was quick off the ball (once, a little too quick) and he had nice engagement technique. For all the shit we’ve heard about our o-line over the years, it’s nice to have he and an improving Kasey Studdard out there….as backups, no less.
    * You might remember that Chris Brown from the University of Colorado and the Tennessee BE-SFs. Sure, only Eric Dickerson can run with that upright style and get away with it, but Brown looked strong and tough. Even though he’s 28, he doesn’t have a ton of yards on him. I refuse to get excited, but he would be a fantastic luxury.
    * Glover Quin can tackle.
    * I didn’t get a good feel for Matteral Richardson. Opinions?
    * James Casey: Nice catch.
    * Connor Barwin: He’s one scary dude and freakishly athletic. BUT, I still don’t know what we do with him outside of 3rd down passing situations. I just can’t get the Jason Babin comparisons out of my head, which is my problem. Babin is 6’3", 267 lbs while Barwin is 6’4", 256 lbs. Barwin is athletic, and Babin was similarly gifted coming out of Western Michigan. I think, however, that this front office and coaching staff will better understand how to use Barwin.

That’s it for now.

oops

Forgot to add that I was trying to watch while at a party, and I completely missed the 4th quarter. I hope to watch it later, though with my schedule this week, it may not happen.

I thought Barwin looked GREAT

He did have some run recognition problems – but for what they brought him in for – thought he was great tonight. You should get over the Babin thing. They’re just not the same kind of player.

Agree on Butler. I failed to mention him on my game wrap-up. I guess since he didn’t play too much last year, I had forgotten how FREAKING HUGE that guy is. No wonder they cut Ephraim.

Quin looked good. He’s pretty physical.

One other thing I don’t think has been mentioned – the Texans seemed much more prepared for poor conditions than the Chiefs. A sign of improving coaching? Maybe… or it might be nothing.

Heh, clearly

I just have a problem with tweeners, which is what Babin turned out to be.

tweeners

When we drafted Babin, we ran a 3-4, which is exactly the scheme you draft tweeners for. Anything else from you, Captain Obvious?

by beefy on Aug 17, 2009 3:50 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

then why draft Barwin...

…if he’s a tweener?

Like I said, it’s MY problem. For some reason, I have the comp running around in my head.

btw...

the Barwin thing is kind of a joke. I like the pick, but outside of obvious passing downs, his value seems to be pretty limited.

Note to self: Insert something witty here.

by bigfatdrunk on Aug 17, 2009 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

And it will be.

He could very well end up being a one-trick pony, and I’m fine with that, out of a second rounder, as long as he’s pretty good at that one trick.
I also watched the Cincy/Saints game and, although he may still prove to be awesome, we got the better deal in Barwin, versus getting Michael Johnson out of GTech, which is what many of us wanted.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

his workouts were horrible, too

Yeah, if it’s a one-trick kind of deal, Barwin’s a pretty shiny pony.

Barwin did show his speed

He was waved in by Albert on his sack play and he took advantage of it. Anytime the left tackle is reluctant to lock up, you have to take advantage of it and just go by. He did show his weakness in reading the offense. I suppose experience will help there. This is only his second year playing the position, and I think he is on automatic pilot right now. DeMeco probably calls the play and he reacts based on that. There was one obvious play where he stood up on the snap and turned and ran to the defensive backfield and missed Larry Johnson coming right through where he was lined up. You need those learning experiences in preseason. He got in a lot of playing time, so today he is with the coaches looking at the tapes. With his energy and athletic ability, if he can learn, we just may see a different Connor Barwin by the end of the preseason!

It will happen

by Rip Jersey on Aug 16, 2009 10:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually

If you watch very closely, Barwin gave Albert a great shoulder dip to get past Albert’s attempt to block. It was a quick and solid move that was executed ridiculously fast.

So you're saying that now I have to think of some witty Sig that will be applicable across all the SBN sites? Go TexanHornStroKets!

by Shake on Aug 16, 2009 10:32 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

i caught the shoulder dip

On the replay and noticed Albert made no move to block him…almost an ole’ move that reminded me of Buchanon with Willie Parker. So, Barwin took the opening and flew on by. Albert was a 1st rounder a year ago, I think and rumor has been that he is a borderline bust. Blowbys like the one administered by Barwin will make that label stick. I’m not trying to downplay Barwin at all. He has the speed! He needs to work on his experience. As at least one other poster mentioned he took himself out of some running plays. One I remember was a handoff to Johnson coming right at him and he had already stood up and left to apparently cover on a play that was never looking like a pass. I suspect a defensive play was called and he was just following it.

It will happen

by Rip Jersey on Aug 16, 2009 4:38 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

not a shoulder dip.....

it was a head fake, clear as day. the tackle saw him look towards the RB, and it threw him off like “is he going with him” type deal, and by the time he looked up barwin was headed towards the QB. excellent move!!!!

by chrisd21 on Aug 17, 2009 10:43 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

misread running plays...

Get used to them, folks. If the scheme we’re going to run really has our dline pushing up the field right off the snap, we’re going to be susceptible to inside runs and especially draw plays. Nature of the beast, and you’ve got to give up a little to get the kind of push we saw the other night (or whenever you were able to watch it).
That is one of the best reasons to run a draw play, when the defense rushes upfield, and also (not mandatory) expects a pass.

Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.

I'm developing a man crush on our QB....

when Bob Allen questioned Schaub about the sack, he said something like. " Yeah probably a better decision couldv’e been made, but we came right back and scored". He said with it with a tone that suggested, " hey we aint perfect but we will kick some ass".

The youngsters that caught my eye were Barwin( he is fast), Casey and Quin, I’ve got a good feeling about this draft class overall.

Cody made a nice play, a spin move that changed the direction of the play and I liked.

and was it my imagintion or did I spot a little pass rush?

A few thoughts

Matt Turk’s leg(s) looked in fine shape. I was a little disappointed when they quickly dismissed (can’t remember his name) what I thought was going to be training camp competition, but after last night Turk appears ready for another season. His 1st punt, before the rain started, was 45 yds with outstanding hang time; unreturnable. Later he ran for a 1st down when the Chiefs failed to contain to his right. Nice shot of him laughing about it on the sidelines.

The Chris Brown sighting was great. Always hard to tell exactly how much of effective running plays is due to great blocking, but he hit the holes quickly and decisively, especially in the red zone. If he can stay healthy, we truly will have a dynamic duo at RB. His 2 yd TD run was impressive, as he wasted no motion hitting the correct gap and finishing strongly.

Big Frank was awesome, except for the missed tackle on the near QB sack. He showed good mobility and endurance. Can we find a team stupid enough to give up a conditional draft pick for Travis Johnson?

Kris Brown was automatic. His 3 FG’s were near perfect; perfectly centered.

Connor Barwin’s speed and athleticism was impressive. Nice QB sack. Hopefully that was a preview of things to come.

#40, Safety John Busing looked good, especially on special teams.

The injury list in the Chronicle was a bit distressing. I don’t recall seeing Eric Winston sprain an ankle, hopefully that is not serious. Adibi – broken finger. Troy Nolan – broken hand. Boomer Grigsby – sprained ankle. The injuries are already starting to pile up. Not good.

Oh yeah..........almost forgot

Orlovsky looked very shaky. Need to keep Schaub healthy or we may be in big trouble.

And the game announcers were horrible. Spencer Tillman rarely puts a sentence together without a mispronounced woed, and the play by play guy is just a goof.

schaub

Schaub looked OUTSTANDING…if this guy stays healthy I am so pumped about what he can do this year….

Moats and Brown could be great compliments to Supa Steve Slaton if health stays as is and that could be good for S-squared this year as it saves him some miles….

Connor Barwin may not develop into an every down DE right away, but he can come in on 3rd downs this year and wreck HAVOC

Okam has the starting job if he plays with the same motor every game that he did last night….kid can bring it its all about desire

Quin i get more excited about every day

Our receiving coorps (including TE) is NASTY….Casey is gonna be a good one….

Finally, let’s hope for an injury free (minus what we have already) rest of the pre-season and a speedy recovery for Molden, Cushing and Chris….Reeves too I guess but he’s a bum and I’d rather have Dunta back playing with bennett, molden, quin, brice, etc., despite this BS thats going on

that we can find a spot for casey. according to bob allen, he will only make the team if he can beat out the long snapper.

Huh?

Am I reading that right? Bob Allen said that James Casey will only make the team if he wins the long-snapper job?

I cannot fathom a realistic scenario where James Casey does not make the active roster. He’s too valuable, and the raves out of camp about him lead me to believe he’s been far too impressive to not make this squad.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

When wet...

…the ball weighs an extra two pounds. Might not seem like much, but it can put throwing and catching into a different light. Even so, the boys were moving with it as if no big deal. No misques to speak of (Brown’s fumble aside—and wasn’t that grab from behind the collar on that play illegal? Isn’t that the new rule?)

Big Frank might just be the beast he looks like. If Brown isn’t complaining about sore this and that Monday, we may be in fantastic shape at RB, especially with Moats stabbing through the line the way he did the second half.

Barwin brought it, as expected. I know the thought is he’s a third down guy, but if we can get teams backed against the wall where they have to pass, pass, pass to play catch up, he’ll be out there more; full assault along with the blitz and the rest of the rush.

I just would have liked to see Big Frank collapse the middle more; he was playing that same old one-on-one for the most part, stacking at the line and watching for the play. If he could put on just a little more gas and crush in, we could really see some Texans domination!

Our O is just as sexy as Jim Rome said it was. Even in a downpour, they stuck with what works and the receiving corps produced time and again, set up perfectly by a steady running game. September can’t get here fast enough for me.

by SBond on Aug 16, 2009 10:22 AM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Brown's fumble wasn't a fumble

Because yes, the Roy-Williams-sucks-horsecollar-tackle is illegal….and was appropriately flagged on that play.

But props to Studdard for 1. Keeping his shirt on all night, and 2. following the play downfield to be there for the almost-fumble.

passing game.....

was crisp, the routes were tight, and another year in the system and the chemistry really shows between the QB and the WR’s. EVEN in the rain…. excellent excellent showing. i went back and watched the Saints game from year before last, as well as the Browns game. if we had ANY running game (we only had Dayne back then) both games are easily won going away. we got in a lot of trouble on 2 down, we usually would get stuffed for little, or no gain. so now with brown and slaton, that second and 8 becomes third and 4, which is where we excel.

by chrisd21 on Aug 17, 2009 10:59 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this....

Jacoby caught the punt. In the rain. So the ball was wet. And slippery.

And he made solid decisions in advancing upfield. In the rain. On a wet field.

Good call Shake, I forgot that play

Nice to see JJ handle the ball without a bobble, AND elude the 1st 2 tacklers as he moved pretty much North. He didn’t gain big yds, but he made the most of what was there. I thought he looked better than Andre Davis at punt returns. He also caught one pass. Solid game for Jacoby, but he can’t be feeling too secure about his roster spot.

Odds Are Against JJ

There will be many difficult cuts to make this year. To my untrained eyes, JJ’s play really doesn’t stand out. He is clearly no better than the 5th best WR. And he still doesn’t inspire confidence when fielding punts (admit it, you want to look away when he’s receiving the punt).

by kozanack on Aug 16, 2009 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good call...

And letting the ball go, when he was inside the 10. didn’t work out for us on the downing inside the 5, but that’s the correct play. Good for him.

More of my multi-post random thoughts

Baby Shan did a great job calling plays tonight. We were killed on the first series by the 3-4 D (much like ALL of 2008), but he made some fantastic adjustments to the play calling. I was definitely impressed.

And Dan-O looked like his mind is still trying to catch up to the playbook, as he was taking much too long to make his reads and get rid of the ball on most of his passing plays. But when our Offense slows down just a little bit for him, he is going to be a pretty solid QB. Adios Sex Cannon.

Yes but that "pass" he heaved up on 3rd down was an abomination

He tried to force a deep ball into coverage, didn’t have nearly enough arm, so essentiallyhe was just throwing it up for grabs. I thought Kubes pulled him for that, didn’t read about the hammy until the morning after. We definitely could make better use of a roster spot than carrying him as a QB3.

Hey now

He threw one pass, botched one snap and handed off to Hall once and then was pulled. While the first deep bomb seemed like a troll job on the entire Houston fanbase I’m sure we’ll see more of him.

I for one embrace the Grossman and revel in his comedy of errors during the preseason.

Yeah Right

And Kubiak didn’t call me to jump in there because I pulled my groin. Not because I suck as a quarterback. I couldn’t believe he threw that trademark bomb up like that… and it was way short at that. If I was Kubes I would be pissed after seeing that. I think Grossman was a good pick up for the league minimum, but if he puts up another performance like that one I don’t think we’ll be carrying three quarterbacks this year. Good showing overall, though. I’m pretty excited about some of the new and young guys. I’m just wanting to see how we do against some better preseason competition in the Saints and Vikings.

Thoughts

Big Frank: Talk about boom or bust. He was either tossing fools and caving skulls, or letting the guy in front of him wash him out of a play. I think TJ is gone unless he shows some VAST improvement in his game.

Conner Barwin: Experience problems but holy crap the guy has wheels, and has a pretty slick little fake inside spin move (used it on Albert. It looks like a head fake and a shoulder dip and Albert froze/looked inside, that was all she wrote). That right there is a certified “move” used on a starting LT in the NFL (albeit, a 2nd year who looked mediocre his first year LT). Stunts and twists also looked real good with his speed.

Dan-O: Lots of people came away with conflicting opinions. I thought that he needed some time to settle in but was OK. Some nice throws, some head scratchers. I imagine he throws less in a regular season situation.

Grossman: Hahahahaha. Sorry you pulled a hammy, I was really wanting to see more of that, even if it’s only from a comedy stand point.

TE’s: All of these guys performed their roles very well. Casey Dreesen and OD all made good catches. Hill provided all the blocking you could want.

I do think that the Chiefs are in for a long year, so while I am excited, I realize that the Chiefs staff wanted to work on basics, and they also made their star wideout play with the 3rd stringers as a punishment (Whatever, I’m sure that this doesn’t happen in the regular season). Cassel not having Bradley or Bowe to throw to limited him greatly and they ran the ball a lot while he was in. Croyle looked great but he makes Schaub look tough and durable during a regular season. Thigpen was Thigpen. Entertaining scrambles but overall ineffective.

by b0ng on Aug 16, 2009 12:53 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

Good overall, but have we improved?

To be honest, I didn’t see a real attitude difference on defense.

Now I know that Bush isn’t going to cut loose and shows his hand in the preseason, but I felt like the defense looked the same in that KC moved the ball on us between the 20’s with relative ease.

I really want to see some 3 and outs…I hate the bend but dont break philosophy. I want to see offense crushing, pain trains on every down.
