Travis Johnson Traded To Chargers
From the Chronic...
The Texans have traded defensive tackle Travis Johnson to the San Diego Chargers. The Texans dealt Johnson for a conditional draft choice that could be a fifth- or sixth-round pick, depending on his performance.
Johnson, the first-round pick in 2005, had been out while recovering from surgery for a sports hernia. He was supposed to play for the first time in the last regular-season game against Tampa Bay and be ready for the regular-season opener against the New York Jets.

John from Bolts From The Blue (Chargers blog)
First, to correct you, it does say what they got for him. A 5th or 6th round pick (conditional, I’m assuming based off of how much time he sees with the Chargers in 2009).
Second, I’m interested to know the Texans perspective on this. He was a first round choice a few years ago, why is he being traded for so little? Do you think he still has a chance to fulfill his potential?

There was a pretty good fanpost about TJ a while ago.
http://www.battleredblog.com/2009/6/30/930937/travis-johnson-the-tragedy-of
Basically, even though he seemed to do what coaches asked of him, he never seemed to play well to fans. Apparently, he didn’t seem to play all that well to the rest of the league. Add in his injury history, and it’s not surprising we wanted to get rid of him.
As to whether he’ll fulfill his potention, I’d have to guess no. If SD plans on him being the NT, then I think they’ve made a pretty big mistake. If they plan on him losing some weight and becoming a 3-4 DE, then he might have a chance to be decent. Even if they do this, he’s got a very slim chance of being decent.

John
Travis is being traded for so little because he is not very good at playing defensive tackle in the NFL. I wouldn’t say there’s no chance he fulfills the potential that accompanied him as a first-round pick back in ’05, but I will say that I would be STUNNED if he contributed in any meaningful way to your defense.
His departure has been greeted with glee from about 98% of the fan base. That’s particularly telling, considering we have gigantic question marks at DT.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Travis Johnson is just not very good. He was drafted to play NT in a 3-4 defense, which is laughable considering his size, and he’s not better as a 4-3 over tackle. Basically, he just sucks in every way and it would be the shock of my life if he contributed in any meaningful way to the Chargers.
I thought he was drafted
to be a DE in the 3-4.

There's been discussion about that...
because he’s been listed as NT for as long as I can remember, though he did play some DE early on. Who knows?
Yay, sports.

so little?
You’re not gonna find anyone here who thinks he will fulfill first round potential. You probably won’t find anyone who thinks he can even see the field and not be a statistical black hole, no effort waste of space. We’re glad to get ANYTHING for him.
Exactly - I am amazed we may get a 5th rounder.
I thought all we could hope for was a 7th, and a conditional 7th at that. The condition being that the coaches could actually tell that he was on the field. He may have done what the coaches told him to (as Tailgate Andy suggested) but you can count me among the many fans that were not impressed with his effort. Will not miss him a bit.

Guys on the Chargers blog seem to think they got a steal
This will only end in disappointment for them. He’s not going to somehow fulfill the potential that made him a first round pick, regardless of the change of scenery or defensive scheme. He’s just one of those wastes of talent, who really doesn’t seem to care that he is.
Yep, constantly reporting out of shape, with the dunlap gut
and always having nagging injuries during camp shows that he never really tried to get in the best shape that he could. Maybe this trade to beautiful SD, one of the nicest areas in the country will wake him up. Then again maybe not.

We're dying..
for quality DT Play right now. It speaks volumes that we would dump him for the 6th round poo poo plater. I’m guessing if we couldn’t find a trade partener, they would have released him outright. Chargers just wasted a draft pick imo.

Wake up call
Maybe this is the wake up call TJ needs. He’s only got one year left on his contract. He has to impress this season or else…
I’m amazed the Texans got anything for him. I predict he’ll be cut after the season.
The true test in the life of a Texans fan is how gracefully you endure it.
Cut after the season.
That’s the most likely scenario.
Im just happy that we don’t have to deal with his underachieving butt anymore.
Now on to the trashpile to pick up another DT!
Trashpile?
Wheres that maddox guy we use to have? He did a decent job.
If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.

What were the Chargers thinking?
Bad move by Chargers GM Smith but he seems to do that a lot more lately. But what do you expect from a GM who would publicly make fun of the team’s best offensive weapon.
by theaxeeffect4311 on Aug 31, 2009 3:37 PM CDT reply actions
1. Traded a 2nd round pick for Chris Chambers
2. Signed Jyles Tucker to a long term contract
3. AJ Smith publicly made fun of Tomlinson who is still their best player
4. Gave Sproles the franchise tag/Let Michael Turner go (I know he showed flashes but seems dumb when they let Michael Turner go to free agency who was always reliable backup but tag the return man/backup running back and give him top 5 money)
5. I liked the choice of Larry English in the draft, but seems like that can backfire since Phillips was re-signed in 2007 to last through 2012 and while Merriman is in the final year of his contract, could they really let him go? Plus, if Merriman has a good season, then do the Chargers re-sign him or try to trade him off. Then you run into the problem where people will compare English to Merriman and if English does not produce as well as Merriman, then it’s another mistake letting Merriman go. I do not see English replacing Phillips since Phillips does a lot more than just pass-rushing. His coverage skills are good for a 3-4 OLB and he is a solid tackler. So to sum, while the Chargers could carry all three linebackers, it seems a bit odd, but maybe it’s an insurance plan if Merriman doesn’t recover from his injury.
All of these have happened since 2007 which is why I said lately they have been making bad moves.

I think the Chargers have different plans for Johnson.
In Houston, Johnson was expected to be a starter. He was a #1 afterall. In San Diego, he is likely to be little more than relief for our all pro, Jamal Williams. He stands almost no chance of being Williams’ successor since Vaughn Martin is the annoited one in that regard. Johnson is nothing more than a cheap backup with a favorable contract who will have to work his butt off to get playing time. Smith wants what he wants when he wants it and has no problem with the price, which is minimal in this case. Different expectations from a different team.
Yeah...
Johnson probably won’t contribute anything, so at least your expectations are in line with what you’ll get. The Chargers will be lucky if he learns the playbook before the year’s over. To get a draft pick for him is an amazing coup! He was destined for the meat market on Friday. He basically skipped the entire camp with a hernia injury.
The true test in the life of a Texans fan is how gracefully you endure it.
If you think...
For a second, that TJ can play the nose in your 3-4, you’re insane. Say bye-bye to your MLBs, if that’s the case.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
The Real Question Is...
Whether or not Houstonites are happier that the Texans finally dumped Travis Johnson, OR that the Rockets finally dumped Rafer ‘Skip to my Lou’ Alston?!?
skip to my lou
Rafer was starting so with only 5 on the court and 1 of them being SO BAD!
TJ was also BAD but there were 10 other guys, and DT’s rotate…
the rockets had a great backup that everyone wanted to see, NOT RAFER!

TJ for a pick
is amazing turn of events. They probably could have got him for free after he got cut.
The strong do what they have to do; the weak accept what they have to accept
I had him as a turn around this year
No really I have seen his game tape and he has had some real moments, I have this feeling that the hernia thing might have been holding him back.

If you can barely get out of bed
for 2 years are you really going to be a great football player.
“It’s been a big burden,” Johnson said. “I had to get a lot of stuff done to it as far as shots just to be able to get out of the bed every morning.”
I’m not saying this is the only thing but if he was OK with it he might have been pretty good without it.
Johnson said he has been bothered the past couple of years by an assortment of injuries related to the sports hernia and is hopeful the procedure will erase those problems and increase his productivity
.
I know I am in the minority here but we will see.

woohoo
just heard about on channel 13 waiting for the game to start….bob said he was going to be cut from the team anyway, so it was good that they got a trade for him….lol….hope the chargers cut his ass too!!!
I think Smithiak saw the good TE class of '10 coming
and realized seven picks was just not enough.
Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.
A number one traded hurt and another number one with knee problems coming in
The way the defense is playing I would keep everyone you can. Start using the top picks for QB’s. Those of you complaining about the hernia should also be happy that Cushing missed a lot of games at USC due to knee problems. We used a number one for him too! Shots in the dark sometimes get lucky like Mario and Ryans. Thank God Reggie Bush ahs been hurt his whole career and his legal problems help that cause. Then again New Orleans did not need him to make us look like crap.
Schawb injuries keep multiplying. He is lucky with the hits he took not to have gotten hurt earlier. He was running for his life again and twisted an ankle. Not touched and he at least came back. He goes down again who will the Texans pick in the draft number one?
"running for his life again"
Or, you know, taking an open run to a first down instead of forcing a throw.
Yay, sports.
Don't have the game recorded
but someone commented in a different thread that he had AJ open on the play. May want to check that out if you have it recorded. I went to the game, and don’t remember seeing anyone wide open.

Just noticed that TJ made the cut the the 53 man roster... would have thought the
Chargers D-line was more solid…
He did have to give up his number "99"
L B Kevin Burnett was already 99, so Johnson took 72.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
How does AJ Smith think he's getting TJ for cheap?
TJ is in the last year of a 1st round pick contract. That should be the most expensive year of his contract.
I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.
