Why Young, Bush and Leinart went bust
Why should you care, with training camp in progress? Because you can never have enough vindication of the Texans 2006 draft. This article would be better if the author had inserted a section talking about how the Cowboys suck (the 2006 Cowboys draft was Casserly-esque, but sadly, there isn't a tie to the 2006 Rose Bowl). It's the feel-good story of the week, in a schadenfreude sort of way. It took me away from all the broken tibias and contract squabbles and allowed me to chuckle at someone else's misfortune:

Thanks, good reading for a Sunday morning
Anyways, I decided to do a little digging on the Cowboys drafting and I confirmed what you said about their 2006 draft. I don’t think they have one starter out of that draft year. Then I looked at this year’s draft and they had a lot of draft picks, however, their draft didn’t start until the second day with round three. Saw they drafted Texas A&M QB Stephen McGhee who didn’t play a whole lot when he was a senior, and like it or not, in a way, the Cowboys are in the middle of a Mike Leach/Mike Sherman (mostly Leach) battle of words, and I think y’all will find it interesting reading. I had a few laughs about it, but I found myself agreeing with Leach’s base opinion on the subject, which was, why would Stephen McGhee be drafted in the 3rd round of the NFL draft and Graham Harrell go undrafted?

Probably Come Down To Upside
Graham Harrell may be a master of the college game in Mike Leach’s offense. But it looks like his talents aren’t suited to the NFLgame. He has received some try-outs, but hasn’t able to catch on in the NFL. Also, some time back, Andre Ware said that it comes down to this critical difference between college and NFL QBs – A college QB has to be able to find the open receiver, an NFL QB has to be able to find the receiver who is going to be open. I would guess that he would be in a a position to know. Harrell did recently sign a contract to play in Canada, so maybe he’ll eventually make his way to the NFL.
McGhee may not have had the level of success in college ball, but may possess the requisite talent to make it in the NFL. He was the 4th or 5th rated QB going into the draft.

ummmm...........
actually i think he would be a better clipboard guy. since he was in Leach’s offense, no one can deny the guy is intelligent. but, it takes a lot of intangibles to be a NFL quarterback…. and i dont think he’ll ever be one. but still, a good guy, great athlete.

ahh...
I guess there’s an October game between Tech and A&M this season!…
If Harrell happens to thrive up there, in Halifax, I’m sure he’ll get another chance down here, in the NFL. But he does seem to be really skinny, and maybe that had teams looking for other draft alternatives, as much as anything else.
If Harrell had at least had SOME mobility… his slight frame (and college offense) would have been less of an issue, IMHO.
But I’d bet that, if Mike Martz was running someone’s offense this year, Harrell would have found an NFL job, if he hadn’t been drafted outright.
Late round picks and undrafted players do pan out, from time to time, so Harrell could possibly have a future in the NFL, one day. But someone, somewhere, would have to have a use for his particular skills. Or at least have more tangible proof that he is worth harnessing. Last year’s amateur stats mean absolutely nothing to professional talent evaluators.
Wherever Dallas picked McGee, it isn’t too much of a commentary on anyone else. Most organizations have their preferences. This sport is normally looked at through a different lens, from one talent evaluator, to the next. Especially once we get into the quarterbacks. For example.
Drafts are mostly crapshoots, anyway, even when a player projects as a “fit”.
Although, this IS Dallas we’re talking about here. Passing gurus, they’re not. They had better be planning on using McGee as a special teamer, or in the wildcat. Otherwise, it seems they have wasted that 4th rounder :)

No surprises, really...
Bush: Did his damage against the Fresno States of the world. He NEVER, at any point, proved to have an ability to run between the tackles. In fact, he seemed to fear contact, choosing to bounce everything against always slower (read: non-NFL quality) defenses. That Bush was going to Bust was never, at least in my mind, a question.
LenWhale: Always did the yeoman work at USC. His 4th down stop not withstanding, he was by far, and always, the better RB at USC. Bush was never more than Dave Meggett without the work ethic. Frankly, LenWhale scares me this year. He’s a tough, hard runner, and now he’s in shape. I was hoping he would slide to the Texans to the 3rd round.
Leinart: At this point, he’s the most likely to be a successful pro. He was much aided by the USC system, but his lack of success seeems to do more with a poor work ethic than lack of talent. Could also be he isn’t the brightest bulb on the tree.
VY: Well, what can we say? His throwing motion was always going to be problematic, and he was blessed with a scheme and talent in college that covered his obvious lack of strengths. His reads were minimal, and he was allowed (rightfully so) to improvise at will. VY was THE PERFECT college-level QB. His work ethic, attitude, and aptitude (7 on the Wunderlich?) all need to be questioned.
I never believed Bust or VY would be good pros, and I say this as somebody who saw almost every snap VY took in college. They were always college guys, not pros. Sad but true.

Reggie Bust!
All of that silly media talk about the Texans being insane, to pass up the amateur GOAT, Reggie Bush, really tickled me. With his WR frame, what did they expect us to do with him? Especially in Koob’s offense? Run him straight into the teeth of opposing defenses?
Yeah, that would have been a great way to spend our #1 overall choice!
Long live Mario!
