Texans Name Zac Diles Starting Weakside Linebacker
According to a league source, Zac Diles has beaten out Xavier Adibi and will be the starter on the weakside week 1 against the Jets.
When asked about Zac Diles play so far in the preseason, Head Coach Gary Kubiak was quoted as saying "Pretty darn well."
To me, this was expected after Adrian Peterson's 75 yard TD run on the very first play from scrimmage last Monday night.

Zac DIles will be good
This man will do what we need of him. He may not be the best we could get but he will be serviceable.
I Like Zac
For a 7th round pick, I’d have to say he has exceeded any expectations I had for him. He was having a great year last season before his injury.

Other than a high number of tackles...
he wasn’t really having a “great year” before the injury. He was an average (at very, very best) SLB.
That said, I never thought he was a fit for SLB anyway. He might actually do well at WLB.
Yay, sports.
hmmmmm...
We needed Adibi to win this battle, I believe. Diles was simply one of the worst SLBs in football last year per FO, and he especially struggled in coverage. Now, he’ll be expected to pick up the RB out of the backfield. I just don’t see good things happening there.
This also means more reps for Cushing at SLB right off the bat, which probably isn’t a good idea, either, and especially if he doesn’t see a pre-season game.
Note to self: Insert something witty here.
I'm probably being overly optimistic,
which is rare for me, but Diles MIGHT be able to succeed at WLB, at least initially. That is assuming we get out of Methopotamia without the Tits throwing 40 screens to Chris Johnson in the direction of Diles.
Yay, sports.
I wouldn't worry about screens...
The Tits will run it right up the middle.
The true test in the life of a Texans fan is how gracefully you endure it.
Seems like an overreaction to me
I mean, Adibi did screw up royally against the Vikes, and as the coach said “they were the same mistakes,” but Adibi has also made some plays this preseason.
I mean, both of them are healthy – so why would they make this decision now when both of them could play against the Bucs?

I agree
Of the two, Adibi was the only one I can think of some standout (positive) plays Monday night. So Diles might not have screwed up visibly, but doesn’t that just mean he won the WLB spot by default?
Yay, sports.
WTF
i am surprised by this, but i guess he can win it back, i cant believe that the one peterson run was the cause of this. I have a freakin adibi jersey for crying out loud!!
Adibi vs. Diles
I think Adibi has better physical skills but Zack does better on the mental side. Adibi left the giant hole for Peterson last week and the week before blew his coverage of the guy coming out of the back field, both big mental mistakes that cost points, you can’t make mental mistakes on Will, or you will get killed.
X Marks the spot.... on the bench.
Now yall know that I love me some Adibi, but according to Pancakes (did a local sportstalk spot here in SA), he’s had a rough go of it this preseason. The 75 yard dash by AD was just the final straw…
That being said, I fully expect to see a good helping of Adibi as he continues to grow into an NFL player. Zac Diles, for what it was worth, made his fair share of boneheaded mistakes last season. If history is any indication, an inevitable injury will usher him back into the starting line-up.
In anycase, I’m guessing that the coaches feel more comfortable with Diles and his eight career starts (10.6 Tkls/Gm), rather than Adibi and his five (7 Tkl/Gm).

posted this on chris' blog but figured I could do it twice
So does this mean that Cush will be ready to go against Tampa and start against the Jets? Because otherwise this makes very little sense. Diles was playing in his place and I assumed would start at the strong side against the Jets. Adibi is no Sam backer. He is a will. So he wouldn’t replace Cush. This leads me to believe that, if it is true, Cush will play on friday and start in week 1. Otherwise why announce this and move Diles over when he was already going to start on the strong side?
that's part of the weirdness
Kubes was hedging against Cush playing against TB, saying he should against the Jets. Even that would seem like a stretch, though.
Note to self: Insert something witty here.
Must Be What Kubes Is Thinking
They have to think Cushing will be able to play at relatively full strength at SLB versus the Jets, so they want to give Diles time at WLB against the Bucs on Friday night. Otherwise, as you noted, the announcement would seem to be a bit premature.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

In related news
6’-6" WR Matt Jones is in Tennessee, working out with the Titans.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
Jones Workout
Was he using a fifth or a straw?

The Collins-Jones tandem might work then
