Matt Schaub Wins AFC Offensive Player of the Week

Matt Schaub showed the fans of Houston grit and tenacity on Sunday against the Titans, but apparently more than just Houston has noticed.  The Texans quarterback has been named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for his 25 of 39 passing performance.  Schaub threw for 4 TDs and 357 yards, which was good for a 127.8 QB rating.

Matt takes a lot of heat in the national media, mostly for being injury prone but also for holding the ball too long.  Only a season with little or no time missed will dispel the notion that he is fragile, so it is good to see Schaub recognized by the entire league for his presence in the pocket.  He isn't a flashy guy and he certainly won't win many foot races, but has all the potential in the world to be the quarterback that Gary Kubiak and Kyle Shanahan need him to be.

nice.

my feeling is that as shaubby’s ankle gets better, so will he. next 2 weeks are CRUCIAL towards getting a good flow, working Walter back into the offense. going 2-0 in our division this early in the season at the very least gives us momentum and confidence. if we can rip off 5 or 6 straight that puts us in the mix. every year is different! no reason we can’t be really successful. Sky is the limit for our offense, and our defense has time to kick some ass against the jags and raiders.

I like the respect, but...

This is the kind of thing that gets this young team into “Raiders Game Mode” from last year. I’d kinda prefer that the media keep kicking the shit out of us, so the guys don’t get cocky.

I don't think it's deserved

I know Schaub was great but, how do you over look CJ’s career day, and Payton M just eating up Miami. Schaub was good but not the best this week.

Schaub was the best....

Neither Manning nor Johnson came from2 touchdowns behind away from home in a divisional game to win.

Schaub put up more points than Manning, came from further behind and was not sacked.

You overlook Johnson because his team lost. Losing doesn’t get you any awards, regardless of how amazing you look doing it. Not to mention I could have scored in a wheelchair on that one blown coverage where he had noone opposite him. No special points for that.

Schaub deserves it.

I disagree

Matt earned it last week. He did all of this while not having a running game what so ever and having his #2 and #3 WR out of the game. Big Ben didn’t torch the Titans like that, Matty did! While Chris Johnson had a helluva a game a couple of his plays were because of defensive errors, huge errors! Peyton did enough to win on MNF but he didn’t deserve the honor either.

Well-Deserved Honor for Schaub!

He led his team to victory and he earned it all the way. Tip O’ the Cap to Matt Schaub!

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Sep 23, 2009 9:45 PM CDT up reply actions

I doubt this affects Schaub in that way...

…this is more of a contract thing. “Hey look, I was AFC player of the week X times last year. Give me more money.”

What gets this team in trouble is the belief they seem to have that after a good game, they will just “play that way” next time.

From hearing Kubiak, they did things differently this time around. Including approaching the week as if the Titans game was a loss. So they made the players come in and lift/workout on Monday in addition to watching tape etc…

Guess we will find out on Sunday though.

hit of the game....

3rd quarter.. 1:08. on the kickoff after the tochdown to daniels, Casey went low, guy goes in the air, and Bentley jut spins the guy midair, finishing him off. looked like a Dudley Boy 3-D!

Good week for Schaub...

…and deservedly so.

He earned this award because of the fashion he did it in. Come from behind on the road against a division opponent is something the Texans never accomplish. Big win and his numbers were simply amazing.

As for breaking down the kind of QB Shaub is, well he is a bit odd. Shaub threw for 357 yards on Sunday and not one pass was a 15-yard bullet to one of his intended receivers. It seemed almost every ball he threw had a nice arc on it and laid right in between defenders only where his receiver could catch.

His deep balls were perfectly thrown too. Even the pass to Slaton in the endzone. It seemed Slaton didn’t sell out for that pass like he should have.

What I was more impressed with though was probably Shaub’s shortest completion of the day. A 3 yard hookup to Joel Dreessen on 4th and 2. Schaub read the coverage quickly and threw a low tight spiral to Dreessen’s gut. Schaub knew three Titan defenders were going to swarm to Dreesen as soon as he caught the ball, so Shcaub threw it to the spot where Dreessen could secure it immediately and go down without the opportunity for would be tacklers to jar the ball loose from his hands. Great execution on that critical down.

Schaub is amazingly accurate

As evidence, I offer you the two point conversion from last year at Green Bay.

agreed.

and if KW played, im fairly certain shaubby would’ve went over 400 yds passing. he was in the zone pretty much all day. whenever shaub steps back for a deep ball, i usually stand up anticipating a big play. in the words of Gus, “he put it on em!”

Schaub should continue to improve.

Off Topic, but I would like to see the Texans run wildcat just once or twice. Not to seriously use the formation, but just to give oppcoming opponents one more thing to worry about. Colts got shredded by wildcat all night, if they saw Texans run it, even once, would give them something extra to worry about.

There are lots of variations of WC

That would fit our personell well. The one we saw from Miami requires said WR and RB but others could use Casey, and SS, the real benifit is you can add an extra blocker to your running game. It can also produce some really good miss direction by creating flow even befor the snap with motion. Then allowing the “QB” to run in direction of flow, counter flow, or handoff in sweep, or reverse, or even dare I say it pass.

hell yeah.

we dont run much misdirection (except on those bootlegs). anything that will slow down the opposing d-line and/or the linebackers works for me.

He won it over Chris Johnson because...

…Chris Johnson’s “career day” came off of blown assignments more than he doing something great. Good play for his team, but IMO, not because he was special. Any back with speed would score those 3 TDs. Cudos to the NFL for recognizing that.

by randytexas on Sep 23, 2009 3:36 PM CDT reply actions

That's why...

Teams go after Schaub, because they know given time Matt Schaub will rip you to shreads and as soon as someone commits to stopping him the running game will come.

GO TEXANS!!!!
