Jacoby Jones: Texan Come Sunday?

While there are a handful of players on the bubble to make the squad when final cuts are announced tomorrow, Jacoby Jones seems to bring out the most passionate arguments on both sides of the should-he-stay-or-should-he-go debate. Thus, I ask you, BRB: Is Jacoby Jones a Texan come Sunday morning? Vote in the poll below and let us know why you voted the way you did in the Comments.

Personally, I think he's a goner. He hasn't shown enough to make me think Kubes values him as a WR, and there are plenty of other guys who could return punts and/or contribute on special teams coverage without tying up a roster spot for purely punt-returning duty.

tough one...

Good question, though.
I voted no, but I can see all the reasons to vote yes. Torn, like Natalie Imbruglia.

The First Natalie Imbruglia Reference On BRB

I’ll mark the occasion by asking you to never do that again.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

Hope JJ stays

I voted yes. He’s got too much talent, and when he does break one, he’s so explosive. I think he gets one more year. If he doesn’t I do understand why.
He has be able to stay on the field this pre-season, and by all accounts has worked hard.
So…he’s got that going for him. Which is nice.

Re: Obvious

It could be that Kubes is giving Jacoby every possible opportunity to make this team.

by Tim on Sep 4, 2009 2:30 PM CDT up reply actions

Possible

But if he had another guy in mind, you’d think he would be in there against some live fire – in the “dress rehearsal” game against some real competition. It’s going to be scrubs vs. scrubs tonight.

But yeah, that’s a possibility.

What showed me a lot from JJ is how he took that vicious hit and held on just fine… I’m hoping for big things from him tonight.

Re: Possible

Valid point. Even if Kubes trusts the potential replacement (D. Anderson? Apostrophe?), it would be nice to see that guy get some reps in live action before the games count.

Of course, there's always this...

…that I’m right in my assumption that he’s pretty much made the team – but then goes out tonight and the train comes off the tracks, falls down a gorge, and lands on top of an orphanage.

by HoustonDiehards on Sep 4, 2009 2:43 PM CDT up reply actions

Chris is right. He'll return punts against the Jets.

Jacoby is very good when he finds a seam, and of course he has that homerun ability that all coaches look for. We all know he has issues with his hands, and that’s the reason why he hasn’t made it as a reciever.

The saddest news of all is that Rick Smith spent a 3rd round pick on this guy when we probably could have got him at least a round later, maybe two. Rick was like that guy in your fantasy draft who overvalues sleepers, because he knows when they pan out they make you look like a genius. The problem is you always tend to reach for them, and that was the case with Jacoby . . . and Amobi.

At the very least he makes the team because Gary doesn’t want to hurt Rick’s pride. If Rick’s first two picks from that draft are failures, then what a setback that will be. That said, if he fumbles in week 1 he’s gone.

by carsonwayne on Sep 4, 2009 2:46 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

I don’t know about Gary not wanting to hurt Rick’s pride, but it’s entirely plausible given their history dating back to Denver. I think they’re going to give both players the benefit of the doubt.

The true test in the life of a Texans fan is how gracefully you endure it.

That is the question

Darnell Jenkins – (2) punt returns/7 yard avg; (1) kick return/42 yards; 1 pass/19 yards.
Jacoby Jones – (3) punt returns/4 yard avg; (2) kick returns/22 yard avg; 4 passes/34 yards

Darnell Jenkins production per opportunity has been almost double JJ’s but he has been given fewer opportunities; probably not enough to hand him a spot on the team. I’m of the opinion that JJ is probably with the team for another year, unless another team releases a talented return specialist.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Sep 4, 2009 5:05 PM CDT up reply actions

nice.

i was thinking along the same lines. seems as if we were gonna go with someone else, they would’ve given them a lot of reps. by those stats alone on appearances, it appears JJ is staying. he hasnt broken any, but, even more telling, the # of fair catches. which shows his maturity. he knew it was a close battle, and he could’ve tried to force something, when it wasnt there. but he didnt.
and….give credit where credit is due. JJ sported the first “fro” hawk… not Von Wafer.

I voted no.

We dont need a punt returner.
Kubes is planning on going for fourth on every single drive.

What? This is real football not Madden 10? Oh.
In that case, I still vote no.

ha!

if it was madden, shaubby’s ass would be on the bench because im the starter.

If we could clone his mama

And have her sit in both endzones, and get her/them tickets to all the road games, then I vote yes. Otherwise, I’m opting out.

by Tim on Sep 4, 2009 3:07 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Amen to that

Honestly, if the Texans do have someone who they feel like CAN step in and return punts – I’d be just fine with moving on and keeping Jenkins instead.

by HoustonDiehards on Sep 4, 2009 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I voted no

Jacoby Jones reminds me of Orlando Jones in “The Replacements”. The fastest S.O.B. on the field, with hands of butter. I’ve been hoping that he’d get it together and become a reliable returner/receiver, but I haven’t seen anything different yet. I cringe every time they kick the ball. I keep thinking of Orlando Jones saying, “but coach, it looks like I just jacked off an elephant!”, and thinking maybe that’s what we need to do with Jacoby. Just a three beer opinion.

by drunk dog on Sep 4, 2009 4:49 PM CDT reply actions

I think he stays

The Texans will more than likely carry 5 WRs into the season and I don’t think any of our other recievers have shown themselves to be a better WR to man that spot. The fact that he’s a pretty good returner as well only helps his cause. I’m not really all that exceited about Jones anymore, but even still who else is going to take his place if he’s cut? When he comes down to it he’s probably the best option to man the 5th WR spot.

by Bryan72076 on Sep 4, 2009 6:32 PM CDT reply actions

i voted yes

but i think they should give his roster spot to someone else…like i saw it posted earlier, i think he has one more year before they kick him to the curb…

by turnip73 on Sep 4, 2009 6:57 PM CDT reply actions

I say he's stayin

The hands issues of last year weren’t the talk of camp this year, which, psychologically for him is a great thing.

And Rexy will be our #2, and he’ll find #12 even if he’s on the bench.

And he was WR all last year and how many times did he smell the field on offense?

He’ll be here.

Smushiak will take us to the playoffs in 2009.

by texanphil on Sep 4, 2009 10:09 PM CDT reply actions

Jacoby redundant

Andre Davis returns kickoffs, let him do punts as well. He has better hands, and can still break things open. Jacoby’s had three years, and always does well in the PRE-season. I say give Martinez a shot.

by nunya bidnes on Sep 5, 2009 2:43 PM CDT reply actions

Jacoby Shopping

I was reading nationalfootballpost.com and Mike Lombardi’s column said they were looking for another DT (no duh!) but also that they were shopping Jacoby Jones all Saturday with no luck. That might explain why they kept Glenn Martinez.
