Rick Dennison Offered Offensive Coordinator Position; Will Make Decision Within 24 Hours

So says John McClain:

"We had a great visit," Kubiak said. "Rick and I played and worked together for so many years in Denver. I tried to bring him with me when I was hired here (in 2006). I believe he's the best man for the job.

"He and Shannon went home to talk about it with the rest of the family. Rick's been in Denver a long, long time, and he's got a lot to think about. He went home with a contract in his hands."

No surprise here; Kubes is comfortable with Dennison, and Dennison knows what Kubes wants to do. This has been, and probably remains, a foregone conclusion. You good with it?

I think it's the best move possible

Can’t think of anyone who would be a better fit and who would maintain the continuity.

I’m still very, very confused as to why they even had interest in Mike Munchak.

I think it was the same kind of interest...

Seatlle had in anyone NOT named Pete Carroll.

That's how it seemed to me at first as well

But he was the first guy they tried to interview. Very strange, if you ask me. Had the Texans’ interest in him not been confirmed by Tennessee’s refusal to allow the interview, I would swear the whole thing was made up by John McClain in the first place.

Yeah

Wouldn’t really shock me if pancakes fabricated it all.

Why not?

He coaches arguably the best offensive line in all of football; a line that just sprung their RB for 2,000 yards. Kubiak can keep the continuity in the passing game going by himself. Munchak would have undoubtedly improved our run-blocking and helped coach up Duane Brown, Winston, Caldwell, and the young OG that we’d damn sure better draft.

by Nashmeister on Jan 11, 2010 7:09 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, he'd be great as an OL coach

But he was reportedly on the list as an OC.

He has never been an OC, and never called plays. Kubiak said he wanted someone with whom he was comfortable having them call plays. Also, kind of a big deal – he doesn’t know the system. You don’t bring in a guy with no experience in the system when the offense was already ranked as highly as Houston’s was.

That said – I would LOVE to have the guy back in Houston where he belongs… just not in that capacity.

by HoustonDiehards on Jan 11, 2010 7:20 PM CST up reply actions

Where is this magical land you live in...

Where everyone is VY, and incapable of learning??
Is there no chance Munchak could LEARN about the offense, being that it’s probably comprised of bits and pieces of other offenses? Is there absolutely no crossover in this wonderous world?
Chris, you know I’m not attacking YOU, but this is something that irks me, when talking about players too. Now, if you wanna beat the “he’s never been OC before” drum, then go for it, as that argument is very valid.
Obviously this discussion is about to be moot, but anyway…

Baby Shanahan had never been an OC either.

And I’d argue that he brought even less to the table. Obviously we’d love to have Munchak as our O-line coach, but there’s no chance he moves laterally just to coach a less talented group.

Like I said, Kubiak can keep the passing game going. I think Munchak would simply throw in some more interesting runs for us; more cut-backs and runs designed to get our undersized RBs going in open space.

But that’s all in the past now. Welcome, Rick Dennison (most likely). It’ll be up to he and Kubes to find some way to pick up a few yards running the ball next season. And while I’d have to find some stats to back this up, I don’t recall Denver exactly tearing it up in the red-zone or on goal-line stands lately…

by Nashmeister on Jan 12, 2010 12:05 PM CST up reply actions

Oh, I would've loved Munchak...

For the sole reason of getting him out of Methopotamia.
They were denied an interview, so we’ll never know their level of interest.

maybe Kubes knew he'd be denied the interview

and asked for it to piss off Munchak since his coach doesn’t want him to move up in the world.

My only problem with it:

The idiots bitching about the “Denver connection”. Kubiak knows who to pick for his offense.

by WhiskeyR on Jan 11, 2010 7:29 PM CST reply actions

The "Denver Connection" players are not a good idea...

But not the coaches. You want someone that he knows a little bit about especially coming off of last season trying to move forward and get to a good start in 2010. He has to pick someone who knows the system and his ways.

ITS A GOOD MOVE!!!

The only reason I backed any denver PLAYER pickups...

is that, when you have as little talent as we’ve had, you need every little piece of extra system knowledge you can get, to hopefully level the playing field. Once the talent level increases, system knowledge becomes a minor “pro” for a player.
My $0.02 anyway.

how sweet would it be to dance all over dallas stadium for the superbowl?

Michael: It is going to up in Tahoe a couple more days. Maybe you could take a date?
Lucille: How am I supposed to find someone willing to go into that musty old claptrap?
Michael: The cabin... yes! That would be difficult, too.

"I believe he's the best man for the job."

I think that means he already said yes.

Imagine interviewing someone else for this position if he declines the position.

I guess we could start lookin at chicks.

Okay, already....

It’s been about 24 hours! What’s the answer, Rick?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
