Alex Gibbs Leaves Texans For Seahawks
Tip o' the cap to TexansForever for alerting all of us in the Comments here to John McClain's report:
"Alex called this morning and said he had a heck of an offer from Seattle, and I wished him the best," coach Gary Kubiak said. "He did a great job for us, and he'll do a great job for them."
While many of us were underwhelmed by the Texans' running attack in 2009, the fact remains that Alex Gibbs worked miracles with the offensive line in 2008. Utilizing a rookie running back, no less. The hope is that Gibbs' two years in Houston were sufficient to rub off on John Benton & Co.
Additionally, I'd wager that Kubiak thought that Gibbs could be departing (not necessarily to Seattle, though...that strikes me as primarily a move motivated by money; not that there's anything wrong with that), and that conclusion could be one more reason Rick Dennison, with his Gibbsian zone blocking background, was offered the offensive coordinator gig. One more thing to keep an eye on--will David Gibbs follow his dad to the Seahawks too, leaving the Texans with an opening at secondary coach?
Thoughts on the Alex Gibbs Era?

The Texans need new O-line personnel
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
Not worried...
We have Dennison, an offensive line coach, an assistant offensive line coach, and Bruce Matthews on staff (or soon to be in Dennison’s case). Our lines have enough coaches.
I do hope that David Gibbs goes though. I’ve been calling for a new DB coach for a while.
I call bullshit
There is no way we have a DB coach.
I always assumed "You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma" would be some sort of country music diss track. Live and learn, I guess.

Brian Russell could be your DB coach. Tons of grit without actual effectiveness.
Matt Hasselbeck's satellite TV signals would get intercepted.

Russell teach them how to play the run.
But we should bring in Faggins to coach them up in coverage.
hmm Bennett
coaching… is there a correlation?
Maybe the new DB coach coached him down, instead of up?
Is Fred CB1 in 2010?
Mount Cody in round 1
After his rookie year.
It looked like he was ready to take CB2.
Im interested in seeing how a new DB coach can help him out.
If he does live up to his potential, we have two young corners that can only get better.
Re: Bennett
If Fred Bennett becomes CB1 in 2010, I’ll give up Zima.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
If Tim gives up Zima, & BFD gives up tacos, I'll give up Chick Fil-A

You've been calling for a new DB coach for a while?
Ummm, this was Gibbs first year here. So did you start wanting a new DB coach as soon as he got here? If you want him gone that’s fine. There were enough problems in the secondary that you could make that case easily. You could also make the case that Reeves showed improvement under him and that Quinn and McCain relatively strong showing as rookies sheds a positive light on his work.
I really don’t care either way, but given the choice between the brothers Gibbs (yes I know they aren’t brothers) I think I would prefer to keep the younger Gibbs around at this point.
We have enough staff working with the offensive line that are familiar with what Alex was doing that there shouldn’t be much of a drop off, and we could see some improvement by simply removing one of the chiefs….and getting a fresh perspective on the scheme as opposed to the this is the way I’ve always done it method that Alex brought.

Are tweeting with confidence that the offensive line is gonna be fine and that Benton took more of a leadership role last year.

So....
they’re blaming it all on Benton….
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
Just a theory that we'll never know the answer to...
Is it possible that Gibbs leaving was either the result of reading the handwriting on the wall; as in, he was receiving the blame for the poor performance of the O-line’s role in the lack of a running game? Or, maybe it was more than handwriting; he was asked to leave. Afterall, he left without much fanfare. I guess I saw that he did not have his contract renewed, so he could talk to other teams without requiring that team’s permission. Sounds to me like he was asked to leave or was expecting to be asked to leave.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
asked to leave
seems very doubtful, given the timing.
But the lateral move, when the whole reason Kubiak lured him from retirement was out of respect for Gary, seem suspect.
Maybe he doesn’t like this Dennison character, or Kubes is about to fire his son.

I don't think this is all that odd.
When we hired him, I didn’t expect him to be around for more than a couple years. In a way, he was here to coach our coaches, not the players. Now that our O-line coach knows how to teach and run the ZBS (hopefully), there shouldn’t really be a need for him. Before we brought him in, Kubes was the only one with any real ZBS experience around here, and it’s too much to ask a head coach to devote that much time to the O-line alone.
This neither surprises nor worries me.
Re: Surprise
While I’m not surprised Gibbs only stayed here two years, I am a bit surprised he left here to go to Seattle. I figured it’d be Houston, and then retirement.
Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...
yeah
and its curious, because I thought Kubes was the reason he came out of retirement.
Where in this did Pete Carroll come in?

well that makes sense
carroll has plenty of experience throwing money at people to join him.

The allegations have nothing to due with his recruiting
Its all about whether he lets his players roll around in Range Rovers when he knows they are poor as shit and can’t afford he knows they are driving that was probably bought and paid for by an agent.

When Joe McKnight was asked by the NCAA about the SUV allegedly provided to him, he replied “When USC says they’re gonna give you a full ride, they weren’t joking”

*shrug*
Every report I have read is that an agent bought his GF a range rover that he then rode around campus. It is USC too, so I wouldn’t doubt that someone at the school was complicit, but again, there has been nothing linking it directly back to Carrol. I think the guy is a douche, but there just doesn’t seem to be any evidence that he in any way orchestrated or helped to orchestrate pay backs to student athletes.

/insert Reggie Bush's house argument
and the fact that USC/Carroll obviously did not learn from that incident

which was given to him by who?
Oh yes I believe his name was “not Pete Carrol”. This also happened AFTER Reggie Bush was recruited. There are two things that people seem to be forgetting here:
1)What we were arguing about in the first place(that he throws money at people to recruit them)
2) I’m right, so suck it.

you want evidence?
this is an internet message board. We only need innuendo from two obviously biased internet sources to convict a guy and send him up the river.

Maybe that’s why we struggled to run the ball.
I might be all alone
But I think you KEEP quin at corner , and try bennett out at FS. I think he could be as effective as Wilson was, and I would love to see him get another shot. Kid has talent and is pretty tall with good size for a FS
I mean why the he’ll not. He is done at CB…
by AllenOU on Jan 12, 2010 4:16 PM CST via mobile reply actions
I could agree with this
I want many options at FS2 in case this injury thing continues at FS1.

In regards to quin
Someone mentioned how great he is at locating the ball and turning his head…..
Unlike reeves who just DOESNT turn his head….EVER. No like EVER EVER
quin is too valuable at CB now because dunta is gone. So we have
quin
reeves
molden
Bennett
McCain
the best one on that list. Uh….. Quin?
And bennett can’t suck any worse at FS than he did at CB, or as bad as anyone not named Wilson at FS this season.
The wild card is barber. He has all the tools….
by AllenOU on Jan 12, 2010 4:51 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
as FS2
he was legit.
Quin needs to stay at CB for at least one more year.
And we need 2 CB’s this offseason, both capable of CB1 duties.

scrabble would work
we need a disinformation campaign that shows his 40 time in the upper 4.5’s and we should be able to get him for our extra 5th.
