The Texans can solve one problem via Free Agency...
Let me start by sayin that I know hardly anyone will agree with me so I am prepared to stand alone on my thoughts (not the first time).
However, I think the Texans should consider LenDale White as a FA pick-up in the offseason as our physical down-hill RB. Mostly because of apathy, he has been underutilized with the Titans. However, given the gluttony of RBs over the years during his tenure (Travis Henry, Chris Brown, & Chris Johnson), it would seem biding his time until free agency was probably more front-and-center than trying to fight for playing time. He has good speed, a barely abused physical body (except for tequila), and would be highly motivated to show his talent in the AFC South where has has lingered for the past few years. I think in terms of past FA RBs we have acquired (Ahman Green & Chris Brown), at 25, he is like a new car compared to their level when arriving in Houston. Of course, this is all assuming that he likes coming to a playoff contender with Houston and does it for reasonable money, which I think he would after riding the bench this past season.
Of course, I also think free agency might solve some other issues as well in terms of line depth and maybe some secondary help. Yet, to take away a definite concern at RB and bring in a power runner in LenDale in to bolster the dashing abilities of Steve Slaton as well as a potential darkhorse in Foster, would allow us to focus the draft on the depth and talent needed in other areas to make sure the Texans survive the schedule from hell in 2010.
If not, I like Dwyer or Gerhart in the 2nd or 3rd rounds if available. We can't stay status quo in 2010 in the backfield or it will be more disappointment in 2010. That I think we all agree on...

I put money on Bud Adams giving him $50,000 every time he fumbles the ball as a Texan.
No thank you. No more Titans castoffs. Plenty of other options out there.

I Agree with getting White and improveing the Oline
White makes a good add, if SS can keep his weight down and maintain the explosiveness he had his rookie year, and I think Foster is a good midsized back, the adding white as the power guy. You have 3 fairly good young guys who can do alot together. We can nick name them “Earth, Wind, and Fire”.
But BFD you have that right about the O-line that we need some help there. Infact my entire draft might go like this if I was the Texans.
1 Best O line guy available
2 Best O line guy available
3 Best CB available
4 Best CB available
5 Best person available any possition
6 Best person available any possition
7 Best person available any possition
This is all based on the idea that half of all picks are under acheavers and will not be with the team long term, so you draft 2 of everything you really need.

Why spend a 1st rounder (and 1st round money) on an OG when you have that much quality on the FA market?
I agree with this so long as you can get them signed before
the draft, after the draft everyone costs more and quality drops! I’m all for signing a couple of what ever we need then trying them out and seeing what they look like in OTA’s and Camp then cutting the lowest guy on the pole.

With Pitts and Busiel
not under contract, the Texans should be forced to deal with their line in FA. If they don’t, that would tell us who is getting targeted in the draft.
I think they will bring back Pitts
Befor the season I though that he would just price us out of the market, but with the injury I think we will resign him. O-linemen have very long careers compaired to alot of other possitions so I think he still has several good years ahead of him. That said he is still a question mark and should have a quality backup signed, so that we can do what we did with Brown and Ephram, train they younger guy to take his place.

Even if he did make a full come-back...
I think he has been fairly overrated for most of his career. In the land of the blind and whatnot…
He won’t get Faneca money due to the injury, but even if he’s just short of that… I think it’d be better to shell out the extra dough for a guarantee on somebody like Evans or Mankins.

White would be a terrible fit for this team
The way he plods through holes, he’d average like 2.5 yards per carry for the Texans at best. He isn’t quick or explosive enough to get through the holes of an almost entirely zone blocking line. That would make him exclusively a short yardage back, and would probably be limited to only a few different plays, all runs the dive or off guard variety. We just don’t do that enough to support the contract he’s going to want. I agree that we need to improve our goal line/short yardage offense, but I don’t think it’s by trying to make an offense built untraditionally play traditional smash mouth football in the trenches. There are other ways to move the ball a yard or two then lining up and trying to bull past the defense straight ahead, we need to find a better way to go about it than trying to play way outside our offensive scheme at the goaline.
We already had Lendale White once
He was called Ron Dayne. No thanks.

It was him as a starter I hated. Him or Stacy Mack were serviceable as goaline backs, just not as starters.

2.5 yards a carry wins us two more games...
Jacksonville and insert at least one other game where we kicked vs. running for yardage.
I’m just sayin’….
PS I agree OL, Secondary, and RB need to be first and foremost in FA and draft moves. However, I will puke all over Marc Vandemeer at the Draft Party if we draft another D-lineman in the first round…

I want a stud DT on this defense next year.
But as long as they address Corner, Safety, DT, or interior lineman with first pick I will be pleased.

CB with the first pick would displease me
They have a NFL-standard group of CBs already. They are substandard at Interior O-line, DT, FS, and Interior O-line.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
Wilson is substandard? The depth behind him sucks maybe, but I dont see him as below average.
Be judgmental about the actions of the past, be hopeful about the actions of the future. -The Homers Creed
I could be stretching the truth a bit so I can make my point....
that OG, DT and FS are the positions most in need of improvement. My point is that CB is not in the top three positions that in the most need of improvement.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
There's room for argument....
But I’m sticking with what I believe. Can’t remember being wrong before, but, I have to consider the source….
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
The argument is...
We already have a pretty good starting FS, and actually Barber did ok as the backup, late in the year. Throw that in with the possibility that Glover Quin could try his luck at the position with some likely success, and FS shouldn’t be anywhere near the top 3 needs.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
I think you should prepare to be disappointed.....
I see OG, DT and FS in the first three rounds and maybe in that order. The position that I think might slip into that order would be OLB. I don’t see CB in the top three picks. With Frenchy, Glover, Brice, Molden and everyone’s fave Cunta all scrambling for that position, I don’t see the Texans putting a high pick there. Who did I forget….Bennett!
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
Why? Because you "see" it?
The only way I’d be disappointed is if I ever EVER agreed with you and what you “see.”
I’d turn it on you and tell you to prepare for disappointment, but I “see” you waking up prepared for that, every single day.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Go away troll!
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
DT in the second?
Who in the hell would we take? Williams and Cody won’t fall that far, and anyone else would be a reach of Raiders proportions. Don’t forget that if the coaches really decide FS is that much of a need they could still draft a CB and convert GQ to FS.
www.manningface.com
I can’t predict what other teams will do. How many have to have a DT in the first two rounds? Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska; Gerald McCoy, Oklahoma; Brian Price, UCLA; Dan Williams, Tennessee; and Terrence Cody, Alabama lead the parade. That’s five NTs. I can see several DTs available in the 2nd to 4th rounds who are potential starters on the Texans in their rookie season:
Jay Ross, East Carolina / Height: 6-3 / Weight: 314 / Projected 40 Time: 5.14
Ekom Udofia, Stanford / Height: 6-2 / Weight: 315 / Projected 40 Time: 5.12
Kade Weston, Georgia / Height: 6-5 / Weight: 322 / Projected 40 Time: 5.05
Sure, they are rookies and who knows how prepared for the NFL, but they have the size and the speed to compete for playing time on the Texans and I think it is what the team needs. The Texans likely won’t be moving up in the draft to get one of the aforementioned players. These three will probably be there in rounds 2-4. Depending on how they test out at the Combine, perhaps they won’t be a reach at those spots.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
of those
Jay Ross is the only one who rates as being higher then a 4th rounder, and is expected to go in the 3rd. The dropoff is huge from Cody and Williams to any of those 3. Compare that to the dropoff from the DBs that will be available at 20 and those that will be available at 52, or even the dbs that will be available at 84, and its not even close.
www.manningface.com
True
But gradings can change after the Combine….for all the players I mentioned. I agree on the apparent drop-off. The difference in the total number of DTs that could be lumped into being “draftable” versus the number of DBs in that same category is vast.
Now let’s reason this out. So, the Texans need a DT. Can we agree on that? And, I won’t say they can’t use a DB, too. What the people doing these ratings of players in the draft don’t do is consider what teams need. Saying that a player is a 4th rounder is all relative. My thinking, if there are fewer players available as being considered NFL level players, that puts more of a premium on their value. There are fewer DTs. So, I don’t necessarily consider it a reach for the Texans to take in the 3rd round what the raters call a 4th rounder..or, if they take in the 2nd what the raters are calling a 3rd rounder. The raters aren’t doing the drafting. They are only doing the mocking. As are we.
If there are many DBs available that the raters are calling 3rd, 4th, 5th rounders, then the Texans should be able to find what they are looking for in those rounds. There is no race to be grabbing the first DB they see. When pickings are slim, as in DTs, then the race is on. If you need a DT, you have to take him when you can get him.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
Sure, but...
I bet they could throw a ball over them mountains, there.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
What if Quinn regresses like Bennett did ?
And Cunta walks, I don’t think we have NFL-standard corners. But I would be fine with an offensive lineman first round, if you spend the other first day picks upgrading the defense.

but just so your not disappointed by the fact that the draft is gonna take eternally longer than usual I gotta inform you that I believe the first round is gonna be on Thursday and then the rounds after that spread out across Friday and Saturday. Man the world loves money haha!
Standard is nice and whatnot...

What about Robinson from Fla St?
Though he would be a gamble.
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.
http://www.battleredblog.com
No more of a gamble than trotting Cunta out there every play, IMO.
I’d much rather set Cunta out on the curb with the rest of the trash, and give Frenchy, Glover, Brice, and Molden a shot at the CB1 job. To thicken the mix, draft a guy, and bring in a Leigh Bodden, Tye Hill, Tramon Williams guy to compete. YOUNG guys that have shown they might have what it takes, if given the opportunity and setting.
We already know what we’ve got in Cunta, and what we’ve got is not good. Piss on him, and let him rot away on someone else’s dime.
From what he showed this year off the field, we couldn’t trust him to be a good supportive teammate in the lockeroom, were he to lose his spot AND take the inevitable paycut/reality slap.
Wow… that really should’ve been it’s own thread, and had nothing to do with the Robinson kid from Fl.State. Sorry BFD.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
Regardless of where he goes...
the dude’s getting a paycut. No one’s paying him top 5 CB money or even top 10.
As for in the locker room, I’ve seen a lot of interviews (on ABC’s post-game) with Ryans, Mario, and Bernard about how Dunta’s a big part of the defense. It’s what sparked my look into Dunta’s coverage numbers. It won’t change anyone’s opinions, but he does seem to get along with his teammates (as do all the Texans really. We don’t seem to have any locker room drama).
True, and I've seen that too...
But I’d just be wary about it, knowing that he’d be in line for a paycut, and the likely demotion. Would the same whiny bitch show up that did when he got franchised, trashing Rick and anyone in his path?
Again, I’d just rather not, when there are younger, hungrier guys out there that would give their all for the TEAM.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
That's the question
No one really knows what the Texans are going to do with contract talks or how people will react (Dunta, DeMeco, OD, Bernard).
Dunta’s gotta get in line though…DeMeco’s priority number 1.
Amen to that.
And Cunta can get in line alright… just not with our FO. I don’t even want Rick to make him an offer, even if it’s one to spite the everliving fuck out of him.

When you say gamble...
It’s not making me jump up at the chance…although I do like him best out of the CBs, but everyone has him going 25-32.
White has never shown at any point in his career that he has the dedication that he needs to be a reliable back. I also think that he’s another one of those “that guy’s big so he can be a good short yardage back” guys. Sure size helps, but it in no way guarantees a good short yardage runner. It’s more about being able to find the smallest crease quickly, and putting your down and fighting for every inch than it is about size. I don’t consider White to be a good enough of a short yardage to put up with his attitude.
He could probably be a decent part of a RB committee….but I would rather go elsewhere.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
LenWhale is not going to be a Texan
And I am perplexed by the amount of people who think this is a good idea.
1) LenWhale is a restricted free agent since there’ll be no CBA. He’s not worth a pick.
2) Pretty much the entire Denver scheme is based on getting one-cut speed backs. The only cut LenWhale can make is his knife over a piece of food, and he probably isn’t too used to that one either.

Speaking of players that may be out there, maybe not as a free agent, but out there.....
Sage Rosenfels
Rosenfels has not been activated for a single game this year and he has not been activated for this Sunday’s NFC Championship game. The rumor is, if Brett Favre comes back with the Vikings next season, Rosenfels will be either trade bait or cut. Of course, that decisions could come about one week before training camp….. But, what about the possibility of Sage coming back with the Texans? That would warrant the release of Rexy and DanO.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
Rexy's already gone
And we signed former Viking QB John David Booty to a contract that could see him as the 3rd QB or a practice squad guy.
Maybe gone to Washington? hahaha!
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
I could think of a couple teams that would be better served by bringing in Rosenfels then us.
My guess would be he would end up in one of those spots that would actually let him compete for a starting job if he were cut.
