USA Today Makes Me...Confused?
USA Today has updated their team report on the beloved Houston Texans. They have a unit-by-unit breakdown of the team that is very interesting to read. By interesting, I mean better than ANYTHING I've seen from the media (yes, that's a low bar, but still). You still need more enticing to click the link? They call Frank Okam "a waste of space on the roster." They also like one CB more than the other.
Below the jump is some bigger "news" about the team from the news and notes section of the team report.
—G Chester Pitts, WR Kevin Walter and CB Dunta Robinson will be unrestricted free agents with or without a new collective bargaining agreement. Two players can be protected by the team if they choose to use franchise and transition tags. Robinson was the franchise player this season. Pitts, who is coming off major knee surgery, is the most likely to leave. The coaches love the player who replaced him, Kasey Studdard.
—K Kris Brown, an 11-year veteran, is coming off his worst season. For the first time, the Texans are expected to bring in a kicker to challenge him. Brown was 21 of 32 on field goals. Misses against Tennessee and Indianapolis on the last play of the game could have forced overtime, and the Texans lost both of them.
"Obviously, we didn't kick well enough to win and play at the level we need to play at to be a champion," Kubiak said. "Kris knows that. We've got to get better."
—Running back is a priority in the draft. There's going to be a lot of competition in training camp. Don't expect Chris Brown to return; his contract expires. The competition should be between a rookie drafted in the first two rounds and returnees Steve Slaton, Ryan Moats, Arian Foster and Jeremiah Johnson, who spent his rookie season on injured reserve after undergoing shoulder surgery.
—The Texans signed free-agent quarterback John David Booty, who spent this past season on the Tennessee Titans' practice squad. Signing Booty could mean they don't plan to re-sign Rex Grossman, whose one-year contract expires. Even though Grossman was the backup behind starter Matt Schaub, the coaches still like Dan Orlovsky in that role. They signed him to a $3 million-a-year deal last year.
—Next season, coach Gary Kubiak wants more balance on offense. He wants to run more and throw less even though the passing game is the strength of the team.
Yay for kicker competition, a sad (maybe) good-bye for Chester Pitts, and an enraged whattheheckissmithiakthinkingwedontneedarbthatearly for the running back position. I haven't seen anything about RB from anyone, but is it really *that* much of a need?

The fact that they've seem to done some work
on the Texans makes me wonder though. I know everyone here is hopeful for a OG or NT or FS in the 1st 2 rounds, but what if we’re missing signs from Smithiak on this one?
I hope we’re not because of his Shanahan ties and the fact that we do have Foster and Slaton, but still…it’s enough to bring to the table for off-season discussion.
Although I completely glossed over the fact that the double agent probably won’t be returning!
"The coaches love the player who replaced him, Kasey Studdard."
This is going to be a problem, isn’t it?

Any time the coaches love a player...
it usually is especially when it appears that Kasey Studdard may be a 2010 OG starter.
I heard that too.
That Caldwell was penciled in as starting right guard already. Maybe just need to draft a center who wont get pushed around all the time like Meyers.

Does anyone know who's available in FA at C?
Aside from Kevin Mawae, I’ve heard more than enough about him.
Yeah Steph wrote it in her comicle blog
It made me postpone the oline post, because MY observations say Caldwell should be starting at center next year.

It causes me to fear
that Smithiak is going to be complacent about addressing the overall O-line issue.
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
It's been out there for several months
…that they like Caldwell at guard. McClain has been saying it for a long time.

Yay!
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
Frightening.
That’s up there with Brian Russell starting at free safety. I have nightmares about that sometimes.
I would be ok with Slaton, Foster, and Johnson
battling for the majority of the snaps, and maybe a lower round pick to come in and put some pressure on those guys. The line was the key problem with the running game. People think that because they excelled at pass blocking, that the running back was the problem in the running game. I did see running backs miss holes occasionally, but most of the time there was just nowhere for them to go.

Nice find, TDC!
Pretty insightful article, depending on what you think about their “RB early in the draft” call. I liked the position group breakdowns, for the most part. Seemed like this dude actually watched most of our games.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
You haven't seen the force field yet...
Preventing such types from entering the city??
It’s elaborate, to say the least.
Sadly, though… the ass clowns we’ve already got can’t get OUT, either.
Bacon tastes good... Pork chops taste good.
TDC that is why the guy works for USA Today because he is a real sports writer.
The problem is the Comicle doesn’t care what the people of Houston think they are too busy stuck up their own asses over there.
I thought it was a pretty good article...untill
with stuff like "Barber and Busing rotated as starters. Busing couldn’t cover. Barber was too inconsistent. " This is dead on!
BUT..
“Russell signed late and played like a veteran. He was smart and played hard against the run but didn’t cover much.”
was he watching the samw Russel I was??
He DID show a lot of grit, though
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

Oh no, Russell isn't even talented enough to show grit
It was all pluck, my friend.

Oh yeah
Great Find!!! seeing an actual observation and report on the Texans by a journalist is always nice for us Texan Fans. I do read USA Today more often than the Comicle or even ESPN both groups are biased and piss me off with their slobbing on the knobs of specific teams/players!
