Since this is commentary, which is a fancy way of saying just someone passing his own gas will TRY and remain civil with you (no promises).
Are you out of your flippin' mind, Let's see Dallas been around for 50 years, Houston not quite ten years now. HM why would someone know more about someone who's been around forever, unlike new kid on the block who is a better version.
Acres of empty seats??....really Ricky, so tell me do you ONLY attend a lot of preseason games..because that place is rocking during season. OK this commentary business is lot like weather forecasting in TEXAS, done by total fools and morons or people who don't know too much.
Vince Young??? Vince Young? Do you and Fat John have same man-crushes??? Did he have a man-crush on your trainer, who was your ONLY pipeline into information on Texans, hence paucity of stories of late.
But I digress in my narrative, Vince Young was so dumb it is unbelievable. UT had to cut playbook down to 1/6Th of what they had, as he couldn't memorize all those plays they expected him to run. That Wonderlic score was incorrectly reported, BUT his actual score was not much above the reported score.
I mean with little or no fact but media slobbering (thank you Ricky & Fat John), he decides to buy a penthouse in downtown Houston (and 2 Rolexes..smart 2 watches..so see how long takes you to go broke). Thinking Houston would take a QB who makes McNabb look like Roger Staubach, he can run but has no idea what he is doing out there.
Then start acting like he is heir apparent to Texans QB throne, you do understand because media wanted colorful but stupid Vince, while many uneducated Texans fans (there will never be as many of those are there are moronic Dallas fans) had a desire to see Reggie BUST on Reliant field.
But this was a bonanza for 2ND worst owner in NFL (Jerry will ALWAYS be #1), no matter who Texans picked at #1 New Orleans would select 1 of the 3 left, leaving Fingers (you're #1) Adams to grab his star who was going to tweak nose of Texans fans and Houston.
He can crow about likelyhood of a mentally challenged bench-warmer with a sub-par head for game (did you note Buddy's Jerry Jones/Al Davis play my son or ELSE move) doing something, I think it is more likely Bud Adams will be waiting for that NFL title when he breathes his last.
Now back to your narrative, yes Texans have taken a slow but steady course towards respectability. However are you out of your ever loving mind..Part football, part circus, Dallas is ALL circus and Jerry is the Ringmaster and head clown.
People have warned Jerry for years about what he was doing, but salesman Jerry says "Damn the icebergs, full speed ahead on Dallas Titanic". EVERY year since 1995 Jerry hobbles out like the Pennsylvania weather predicting rodent in July, stares at his own image and screams Super Bowl.
EVERY year Dallas fans (who are not to be confused with any group with above average IQ's, more likely they are short yellow bus riding people) turn in Pavlov's dogs slobber and dream of postseason. Ricky, how is that working out for you Dallas lovers. Oh wait FOURTEEN STRAIGHT YEARS OF MEDIOCRITY, now most fans of NFL teams would be glad for winning seasons and postseason play...LOTS.
But this is Dallas fans we are talking about here, they can only count to 5 and only thing moves them is a Super Bowl...kind of explains vacant, somnambulent look they carry most of season. It also explains why their battle cry is "Next Year, Next Year, Next Year", with an owner like that who promises more than a politician in an election year and delivers about as much makes sense.
So Jerry looking like a horse's ass and his team pedestrian is GOOD, so long as it sells product which the owner pockets ALL the loot..wait could Jerry do all this to enrich himself...NO that couldn't be.
Kind of like that old story "Any publicity, even bad publicity is good publicity". If you are selling something to people with an average IQ maybe, but to intelligent people (like Texans fans) that won't fly. Jerry is all about sales and not one iota about his product, he can sell anything to anyone (long as has the right shill..right Mr. Tagliabue).
As to Jerry-world, let's get this right off the table. he built that stadium that big for 2 reasons, 1) because he was tired of his ego getting wet when it rained. 2) because Reliant Stadium is the FIRST retractable roof stadium..he knows he can never have FIRST designation so he wants people to forget word FIRST.
That he has a flock of sheep so stupid as to pay $12 for an 6 oz beer, $10 bucks for a small nachos, pay $50-$100 to park in stadium parking lots and pay the HIGHEST price for even nosebleeds seats, while his cash register is ringing because the suckers are handing over money like they getting something...I mean it is as if you stood on a street corner, and people buying your paper and shoving money at you without you doing a thing (better living then crime).
If you believe Dallas is close to a Super Bowl, then obviously they put you in this department, rather than let you empty wastebaskets or sharpen pencils (maybe afraid you would hurt yourself).
Let's go back to my opening point Ricky, Texans have just completed their 8Th season. Dallas just completed 50Th season. So who is better is your point I am figuring (not assuming since am not a Dallas fan..ass/u/me), well that is like asking a High School track star to race Usain Bolt...they both run, but one is further along in his development (NOT mentally or emotionally..since this is Dallas we talking about).
How many years before Dallas playing in a 13 team league playing 12 games a season, achieved a winning season (since you want to compare apples to Lemons) SEVEN years, took us 8 years in a 32 team league playing 16 games a season.
Not sure of your math skills (or writing skills for a fact), but the odds of a team achieving success in amongst 32 teams playing 16 games compared to a 13 team league playing 12 games (512 games vs. 156 games) seems to not favor guy with bigger field to plow.
It's kind of like you and Michael Jordan in a dunking contest, you aren't going to win because 2 different factors cannot be compared but hey it makes your narrative seem reasonable (kind of like why troubled people think they're sane).
In fact let's dispose of the level playing field myth for Houston Texans, Texans had EVERY disadvantage thrown at them from start. Why you ask, because of Carolina and Jacksonville. 2 new entries to NFL in 1995, NFL fearing they might fall and hurt themselves padded them VERY WELL.
How did that work out for them, Carolina AND Jacksonville went to Championship games in only 2ND season. NFL went oh no we can't make that mistake again. NFL teams were allowed to protect more players when Texans came in, they also did not get an easy division to play in (NFC West and AFC Central).
The Texans have struggled at times, we cannot deny that for a fact. BUT our fans have remained strongly behind this team from 2002 to now. It is only now since some success we seeing bandwagon fans try and jump on a moving vehicle, Dallas fans have so many calluses from jumping off and on their bandwagon....they feel little pain on impact of jumping off and on.
11-5 vs 9-7 how is that galling Ricky, hey I know let's play a game. We will take Texans and Dallas preseason and postseason 2009 Strength of Schedule and see who had it tougher...OK Ricky
2009 Strength of Schedule (Preseason)Houston 15Th .506 Dallas 11Th .516
2009 Strength of Schedule (postseason)Houston 119-137 .460 Dallas 125-131 .480
Lets take this 1 step further Ricky, how many winning records, how many playoff teams, how many 8-8 teams in 2009Houston 5 winning, 5 playoff teams, 2 8-8 teams Dallas 5 winning, 4 playoff teams, 3 8-8 teams
So Dallas is so far above Texans, yet could couldn't manage to beat a 15Th place Strength of Schedule team with an easier schedule by more than 2 games..facing obviously an easier schedule (11Th) Dallas underperformed.
WAIT what about those 7 Texans losses, did you know total difference for those 7 losses was FIFTY POINTS (17 against Jets...so we lost 6 games by ONLY a total of 33 points).
WOW so how did you get supposition (for you to make it simple... the idea), that Dallas was far superior to the Houston Texans. I am just not seeing it, FACTS don't bear out your conjecture in fact they disprove it disenhearteningly so.
You bring up the 3 jokers in Dallas deck next (TO, Tank & Pacman), but you forget Jerry's stupidity goes back way before than. Paying 35 Million to an 8 game playing CB (with a John Madden created reputation), who despite his reputation (thanks John) mainly used what rules gave him...pushing off WR, holding WRs..Deion would not still be in league with today's rules.
Heck while we are at it let's mention 2 #1's for Joey Galloway, $20 million for Rocket Ismail, $47 Million for Roy Williams..as they say in radio, the hits just keep on coming. Since Jimmy Johnson left, let's see how has Dallas done under Jerry's reign of terror (discounting 1995-96 as still Jimmy's players).
1997-2009 (13 years) 106-102 .510 6 playoff appearances (less than. 500) 1-5 playoff record (.160).
Ricky, am I missing something, am not seeing this dominance you speak of in Dallas. In fact if were to say so myself, would say they look pretty average (OK unless you count in hype, marketing and BS).
Am going to throw up if hear that worn-out "talented" line again, Dallas was talented when went 13-3 and went out 1st round of playoffs, Dallas was talented when they went 9-7 and missed playoffs. They still talented when went 11-5 and finally won a playoff game, I am guessing talented is an acronym for UNDERACHIEVING.
Ricky, DO NOT give Wade any credit (maybe for defensive side), but Puppet-master Jerry is the REAL Head Coach. Why after a franchise embarrassing 44-6 beating did Jerry keep him, because no one else (even Jason Garrett) feels comfortable playing Mortimer Snerd to Jerry's Edgar Bergen.
Better Players, Better Coaches...what the heck are you smoking Ricky, I want to see pink elephants too but don't mail it will come pick it up. I am guessing since Texans no longer have your friend feeding you stories, guess you are doing this is a snit (a 2010 Snit, but still a snit).
Hey so they have better players huh
Schaub, top 10 in all stats that matter for QB (no lower than 7Th, 1st in MANY) completion, rating, yards, TDs, etc, and only 3 year as a starter. Hey Tony Romo is in only his 3rd year as a starter, BUT Tony plays in WEAK conference (NFC) vs. a TOUGH conference (AFC)NFC East 2009 46-50 AFC South 2009 58-38
Romo is behind Schaub in EVERY category except ONE, that's right Mr OMG is not as good as our QB, let's not bother with WRs Andre Johnson singlehandedly smoked the combined numbers of Dallas WRs. Well their running game is better you'll say, so take out BOTH their starting pulling guards and see how their numbers play out.
Coaches are so much better, so Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator is better than a Head Coach WITH a Defensive Coordinator. Of course Texans did not play 4 sub-par teams like Dallas did (or run score up UT style like Dallas did either). Has Wade/Jerry taken a team in four years from 2-14 to 9-7, with an almost total turnover of players...NO is answer, saw your puzzled look thought might help you.
I hope your article persuades Houston Chronicle to pursue drug testing before articles get printed, might save you and other writers from public humiliation like this article has. I mean the next statement you make, only makes me think of Nancy Reagan...JUST SAY NO TO DRUGS
"Would you trade Bob McNair for Jerry Jones? Yes you would, in a heartbeat". since am hoping to get this rebuttal published, won't ask if you are out of your F-ing mind..will keep it clean so kids can read this.
I live in the DFW area so know of what I speak, I wouldn't trade Jerry Jones for a losing lottery ticket let alone a winning one. He is as one of local reporters in a lucid (UN-Jones paid...he has co-opted media in this area and seemingly in other parts of Texas since 1989) moment stated "Jerry Jones is a football MORON" Gil LeBreton Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
He has found 2 gems in all the undrafted players signings of last 13 years (out of literally HUNDREDS....WOWZA!!!), that qualifies him for status as a genius huh Ricky. You even brought up how much better 2 men are then drafted players (BTW Texans have had 4 drafts with current leadership, they have had 25 players out of 28 draft picks make team and make an impact).
You might have heard of Mario Williams, DeMeco Ryans, Eric Winston, Owen Daniels, Jacoby Jones, Zac Diles, Steve Slaton, Duane Brown, Brian Cushing, Connor Barwin, James Casey, Glover Quin...pretty good drafting, and am sure am not only one impressed by efforts of Texans front office (Gil Brandt an NFL drafting legend was impressed too).
BTW you wanted to make big deal over Dallas' defense, how many Defensive Rookies Of the Year has Dallas had lately...ZERO is number comes to my mind, Texans have had TWO in FOUR years.
Rolling out Romo's record as a starter, makes about as much a difference as me saying am 6'5'...a meaningless stat. But then isn't that what all your blather in this "commentary"?? has been, about twisting facts into balloon animals to float your pet theory that Texans CAN/NEVER WILL be as good as Dallas.
Let us know when you get off the stuff you on, am sure when not impaired you are a reasonably smart person. Know that first step to recovery, is admitting you have a problem (and if you think Dallas superior to Texans BOY DO YOU HAVE A PROBLEM).
PS posted all 10K characters of this on Texans message boards, am sure you will have your Vince/Dallas fans protecting your honor...LOL
