January 2010 Approval Poll: Rick Smith
Unless I'm motivated to do another, Rick Smith ends our approval poll marathon. Do you approve or disapprove of the job done by General Manager Rick Smith?

I, for one, will not be satisfied
Until we have an approval poll for Becky Virtue, official assistant to Robert F. McNair.
Was the cocktail glass full of Chex Mix TOO far or just far enough?
Oh yeah I guess Rick Smith is okay, whatever.

I bet it was Cunta
for Rick not paying him his millions after that amazing first game vs the J-E-T-S.
Miss-placed Houstonian living and going to school in the wilderness of Wyoming. Fresno St. 28 - Wyoming 35 (2 OT)!!! Hands down best game I have ever been to.
No brainer, this one.
For the man who brought us Brian Cushing and Bernard Pollard.. I definitely approve.
If he hadn’t dodged the $23 Million Dunta bullet though I’d probably think less of him.
Okay, you talked me into it
BUT! He has to keep proving it this offseason. The pressure is never off…..
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
More Frank Bush and David Gibbs, I'd guess.
Cushing was sort of an obvious choice, anyways.
In other news, today’s onion headline: “Jared Allen Inspires Local Fuckhead To Be Bigger Asshole”.
I put approve,
for the same reasons as whiskey, I he has been an insurmountable amount better than anyone from the past. I am just hoping his streak continues this off season. I am just glad there is not going to be WE SHOULD DRAFT COLT MCCOY!!! this year.
We should draft Colt McCoy

I like the way you two think
But you know what would be even better?
If we could go back in time and draft Vince Young.

or Pactrick Willis
Just think about it. VY takes the snap, drops back to hand it off but CJ is already tackled and standing over him is Willis. He turns to throw and as he looks at each reciever, Willis is standing over them as they lay on the ground. VY has no choice to run but it’s too late…

Giants fan here: What the Texans trade Ryans
to the Giants for Osi Umenyiora and a 4th round pick? Osi is 28 and has 2 years left on his contract.
I'm going to field this one...feel free to rec it BRB if you agree
No.

If there's no CBA
Both Ryans and Pollard with be UFA, I believe. Will they franchise one? Give them one-year tenders? Do they have enough money to give both big contracts?
If there is no CBA
Ryans and Pollard will both be RFA.
There is a better chance of a meteor hitting New York while I’m typing this then there is of Ryans playing for anybody but the Texans next year.

For your sake, I hope the Texans ownership appreciates Ryans and pays him
Both the Eagles and Giants would kill for a young MLB like him. I’m a Giants fan so forget about the Eagles.
The Giants are going into a new stadium and both the GM and coach are on the hot seat after a disastrous ending to the season. The defense collapsed. The Giants have been looking for a stud MLB for years and now that they’re going to the Tampa 2 (new DC), the MLB position is even more important.
Good luck with your off-season!
I will say one thing
Now that we have gotten rid of Travis Johnson, we are short on sexual deviants to please Rhonda Kubiak.
Hmm.
Maybe we should think this over for a while.

They can tag both
if no CBA, by using the F-tag and the T-tag.
I always assumed "You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma" would be some sort of country music diss track. Live and learn, I guess.
No.

Bernard Pollard - likes to knock the piss out of people
Osi Umenyiora – likes people to poop on him.
It’s bad chemistry.

Question for those voting "Disapprove"
Why?
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.
http://www.battleredblog.com
Because Rick hasn't trade for Radio yet?
I always assumed "You're The Reason God Made Oklahoma" would be some sort of country music diss track. Live and learn, I guess.
Exactly
Rick hasn’t brought buzz to Houston. A winning record, yes. Buzz, no.

And wanted him paid 23 million.

Perfectly worded right here
Slatons fumbles don’t look so bad now
and yes to osi and a fourth for demeco
I love demeco but are pass rush would be sick. I think it would have to be a third not a fourth
or how about they throw in Jacobs and we will thrown in all three chrises. ie kris chris and myers

At a few positions, sure.
Smith brought massive upgrades to QB, SLB, and SS (if we resign Pollard), and a marginal upgrade (time will tell if he develops or not) to LT. But before Smith arrived, we still had Andre, DeMeco, Mario, Winston, Pitts, K-Dub, and Spencer (though his career was ended shortly into the season). And I’d say that with Weary and McKinney, our offensive line was arguably better then than it is now.
Looking at it now, we have zero interior offensive linemen, zero reliable RBs, zero good CBs (just a mess of mediocre ones), and zero good DTs (debate me if you will, but Okoye doesn’t get to the QB or make tackles behind the line of scrimmage like an UT should).
As I’ve said before, that 2006 draft is the reason this team finished above .500 this past season, and Smith wasn’t involved in that. Much like Kubiak, I think he has done a decent job and deserves one more year to prove himself worthy of an extension (although he already got his for some reason). But if this team doesn’t make the playoffs next year, I don’t quite understand why he has any more job security than Kubiak.
Re: Okoye
We can debate this as soon as you show me another 22-year-old UT who is getting those sacks and TFL while playing alongside the same type of NT garbage we run out there.

The circumstances don't really matter to me.
If he gets signed to play alongside Haynesworth three years from now and suddenly turns into Warren Sapp, it’s not going to do us a bit of good. He was the tenth overall pick in that draft. If he was too young and too dependent upon having two or three pro-bowlers on the line around him, then the Texans shouldn’t have drafted him.

If it helped get rid of Travis Johnson
Then we should always make that pick at #10. Always.
If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?
Need more evidence of Smith's track record?
Check out the final “All Decade Team” (8 years = Decade?). Only a few are not “current”:

i voted disapprove
just because he couldn’t draft (or can’t trade for) BOTH VYGINA and Mr. Kardashian at the same time.

I said yes but
Rick Smith has alot of work to do. The fact that we don’t have DeMeco Ryans locked up is a joke. I would also like to sign Owen Daniels to a better contract, I know the man got hurt but he deserves the pay day. Kevin Walter would be a huge loss along with Chester Pitts as well.
Hopefully we can take care of business and sign our guys.
