Bob McNair: "Gary's My Coach"

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair made an announcement today after the team's victory over the New England Patriots--head coach Gary Kubiak will be coaching the team in 2010.  McNair left no room for doubt when he said:

"He'll definitely be back.  I don't see any reason why he wouldn't be."

With the victory today, I think this was a foregone conclusion.  How do you fire a coach who just led the franchise to it's first winning record?  McNair went on to laud Kubiak for producing under the conditions this season, most notably the injuries suffered by various Texans.  What say you though...did you believe Kubiak deserved another shot despite a 31-33 career record?

Ive been on the Kubiak bandwagon all season, I’m not getting off now. If the players step up and make big time plays in close games, its playoffs for us in 2010.

No-brainer

There is no way McNair would risk a new coach turning this team upside down.

Consider this...

Get Antoine Caldwell to trade numbers with Chris Myers, and then get rid of anyone wearing jersey # _2.
12 – Jacoby… well, maybe we might should hang onto him, especially if Walters is gone in FA
22 – Chris Brown
32 – Fred Bennett
42 – Brian Russell
52 – Not sure if we have one
62 – Caldwell, swapped for Myers
72 – Jesse Nading
82 – Not sure if we have one
92 – Zgonina

Agree.

I still can’t shake being completely petrified everytime he catches a punt, though. He’s made some huge strides, no diggity.
That damned missed catch that led to the pick six, though….
Let’s see if I can brain scrub his moments away this offseason, and I’ll be ok with keeping him on board.

as a WR than a PR, did anyone else notice that he actually runs differently with respect to how he holds the ball after he catches a pass compared to after fielding a punt?

Winning record = Kubes stays

He has several major flaws, but he’s a young coach, and my hope is that he can correct at least some of them. He needs to:

-Tighten everyone up, cut back on the sloppy play (penalties etc)
-Be quicker to get rid of bad players (the Browns)
-Play to win for all four quarters, without conservative or just plain stupid playcalling (halfback pass…)

by OremLK on Jan 3, 2010 6:46 PM CST reply actions

I think

the 31-33 overall record for Kubiak is a little deceiving because what did he start with? Now look at what him and Smith have made this team into. I give him another year, but I may pause as far as whether to extend the coach.

but I said then that if we won out and ended with our first winning season and the playoffs than there is no way Kubes should be fired. We arent in the playoffs yet but we still have hope. I don't even get how "best in team history" is dispositive of anything

when you’re talking about a team that’s only been around for 8 years and has, throughout the overwhelming majority of that time, had an abysmal D led by the worst DC in football. Saying that anyone did a good job simply because it was the best defense the Texans have featured smacks of justification in the mold of “yeah, but she was the skinniest one at the bar” after you go hogging.

by AllenOU on Jan 3, 2010 7:15 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Most definitely.

Question though: if we had lost this game by three points (or even one), what would your verdicts be?

If the answer is “fire him”, then I want to reiterate the point I’ve made all throughout the “fire Kubiak” days. He is dealing with the biggest handicap in football: a terrible kicker. Today Kris Brown left seven points on the board. It’s a miracle that it didn’t come back to haunt us. Against Tennessee and Indy… Well, surely you remember that. But when you can’t rely on your kicker to make even the shortest of field-goals (or extra points for that matter), particularly in clutch situations, it’s hard as hell to get beyond .500.

Furthermore, I think that if Derrick Johnson wanted a blow-job right now, I’d be right at the front of the line for that. Well… Maybe 2nd-in-line behind Matt, but I’d be ready and willing. That guy tore it up today. We’re in debt to the University of Texas for handing it to Denver.

Kubiak

This team will be mediocre as long as Kubiak is coach. There were at least five losses that could have won with even a mediocre running game. It’s nice to put up gaudy passing numbers, but if you can’t run block you’re going nowhere.

I don’t want to hear about injuries. Indy had more crucial ijuries and won 14. It wasn’t injuries, it was the run game.

by Gabmucs on Jan 3, 2010 7:34 PM CST reply actions

So...

The bad running game is more a result of Kubiak (who brought us the 13th-ranked running game last season) as opposed to the two injured offensive linemen and the fumble-prone RBs?

And wasn’t this year’s running game the best the Pats have had since they started their SB run, and yet their win/loss percentage was among their lesser performances?

A running game is a nice thing to have, but in the NFL today you NEED a QB/passing game more.

so it was "playoff or bust"??

apparently not. Sounds like McNair got a little too excited after the end of today’s game to make such a statement regarding Kubiak’s tenure. I have sick feeling in my stomach that our little 4 game winning streak is giving all Texans’ fans a sense of false hope for next year. Seattle, Rams, Dolphins, Pats (minus Brady during crucial drives) should not have been the reason to keep Kubiak. We went 1-5 in our division for God’s sake and 1-4 verse teams with winning records. We played an easy schedule that should have resulted in at least 11 wins under a more qualified coach. Yeah it’s great Kubiak is a nice guy and nice family man, but unless you can get your team to play 60 minutes every week, it don’t mean shit to me. I feel as if we are leaning into a left handed punch next year with a difficult schedule (NFC East compared to NFC West). Definitely not rooting for the Colts

I do disagree with what they did. I think it will backfire on them. They are assured of a bye, they packed it in the last two games of the season….by the time their first playoff game rolls around they will have had practically four weeks on non-competitive preparation to get stale. There are no slouches in the playoffs, however, I may take issue with Cincinnati; but I at least see them as the weakest of the AFC playoff teams. Anyways, long-story short; when the Colts finally get to the field for their first playoff game, it may take a quarter or a half to shake off the rust and with this company, I don’t think you can do that and win. I see potential upset of the Colts in their first game.

Let's not forget the 1-5 Division record

Gary Kubiak has not coached himself out of scrutiny. If we go back over the season, we can find many examples of coaching shortcomings.

But, McNair, is the owner and he said Coach Kubiak is coming back. Let’s hope the coach has learned from this season and improves along with the team during this off-season.

All Texans minds and thoughts are now on the draft and the free agent market, as we nestle into our living rooms and watch other teams battle it out in the playoffs. This team should have been there, is the way I feel.

by Rip Jersey on Jan 4, 2010 8:15 AM CST up reply actions

We'll See

I have to say that I’m still on the get rid of Kubiak bandwagon. I realize that it’s hard to get rid of the guy who just coached a team to the franchise best record but we should have finished at least 12-4 and not have had to rely on help to get into the playoffs. Yes there were injuries and yes there were miscues by the RB’s and the kicker but it seemed to me that the players lacked the preperation to play 4 quarters of football instead of three in most of our losses. The play calling was suspect at times and I especally remember that HB pass in the second Indy game that still has me scratchin my head. But since we are pretty much stuck with him for aother year I hope at least that we fire every running back except Foster and send Kris Brown packin. I think if the team has the same opportunities next season and we finish 9-7 then he has to go.

And, truth be told, while I wanted him gone for the last half of the season, I’m ok with it. I like the guy and it’s clear the players do as well. I want him to succeed. But I don’t want to feel like sucking on a tailpipe for half of the football season.

I hope that next year’s edition of the team will not commit the insane number of stupid, preventable mistakes that kept this year’s team out of the playoff.

And one other thing: did anyone else notice that, while most of the Texans were celebrating the win, Brain Crushing was not? He had this look like, what’s the big deal? Hell, he probably lost more games this season than he did his whole USC career.

This is the kind of attitude I want from our players. Every single one.

Yep!

They have a good core of players. The team needs to look to their leaders for the example they make during this off-season. I hope Owen Daniels can come back strong and pick back up where he left off last season. He is one of those leaders on this team that they need, too. This is a playoff caliber team. I look around the league and this team has enough talent and few enough holes to fill during the off-season, that next season will be playoffs or bust.

Second – I don’t think this euphoria Bob McNair is apparently feeling due the win Sunday, or maybe the 4 game streak, should be rewarded this early.

Fair enough that Kubiak should be given another season, but I would not extend him until well into, or after next season. If we can’t be more consistent next year, and if Kubiak can’t improve how “cleanly’” he manages the game AND if we are not in the playoff mix next year, then I can’t see rewarding Kubiak with an extension.

How ‘bout 1-5 versus the division and the fact that he is a "player’s coach" (you heard Schaub say it on NBC last nite). Player’s coach = weakness in my book and this team will not get better. There is no accountability on this team, unless you are a running back that fumbles. That accountability starts with the head coach and GM. Again the Texans do just enough to keep people on the bandwagon with an end of season run and we all keep drinking the kool-aid.

Dungy?

I’d probably throw him in that mix as well.

Pete Carroll?

Admittedly not NFL success, but certainly a ton of college.

Honestly the “player’s coach/disciplinarian” thing is more a construct of people trying to define what’s happening than of what is truly happening. All coaches are both and neither, often at the same time…

Bird Law in this country isn't governed by reason.

Agreed

Especially when you factor in the % of time that we (fans) actually see the interaction between a coach and his staff & players. I’d guess that about 93.7% of this interaction is not within sight of the fans or media.

I know

I haven’t commented on here much of late, certanly not for lack of desire, but I have two jobs and work all the time, so I am limited in my internet usage. All that said, I have always been behind Kubiak, though I have always understood and, for the most part, agreed with the criticisms. However, for me, when it is factored in that we are a young team learning to win, the fact that the offense infinitely exceeds what Chris Palmer and Joe Pendry (who, if I am not mistaken is ’Bama’s O-Coordinator; another reason to hate ’Bama) could ever contemplate puttng onto the field, then I am willing to give Kubiak he benefit of the doubt. Many of the late-game misakes can be lain at the feet of Kubiak, however the players do ultimately have to execute. I certainly think Chris Brown should have been benched, at least, however I do know that he is fairly good at blitz pickup, something that Kubiak values highly. These are my ever-so-brief thoughts on the year.

What?

2 jobs should mean LOTS of internet time.

Seriously though, good to see you make an appearance Trip.

9-7

Yes, it is nice that we got our first winning season but I can only feel so happy about it. If we ad been 5-11 or something like that last season then ok. But we are coming of two 8-8 seasons and coming into this season we were picked by mosy analysts to be a 10 win playoff team. Looking back there were at least 3 losses that should have been wins. I guess my rub with Kubiak is that 1) I don’t see a lot of emotion from the guy. He has this constant look on his face of a guy who was pulled out of the stands, handed a headse, and told to coach the team. 2) The team lacked the motivation and preperation to finish games. How many times this season did the Texans get leads in the first half of games and then come out in the second half flat? 3) The offensive play calling tends to get ultra conservative at times when they need to open it up. 4) Clock management at the end of halves (especially the first half) has been shoddy at best. These are just some of the things I have noticed. I am sure he is a great guy and I’m sure he has a lot of knowledge but that doesn’t translate to wins. I wonder if everyone would still be on the Kubiak bandwagon if we finished 8-8? Does that 1 win really mean that much when i didn’t get us where we were predicted to go?

Those same analysts

Have predicted Carolina to be the NFC participant in the Superbowl for the past like 8 years. Grain of salt, my friend.

And if Kris/Chris Brown were hit by a drunk driver in week 2, then we are a 10-win playoff team. Or something like that.

So

are you sayin that we did not have the talent or opportunities to get to 10 wins or more?

Yes

That is quite obviously exactly what I said. Thank you for reading.

That's cool

that you are ecstatic about winning 9 games. That’s cool that you think the Bungles, the Ravens, and the Jets are more talented than the Texans. I guess it was silly of me to think that the Texans had any shot of making the playoffs. I guess it’s that pesky desire I have of seeing my team actually perform to the level that they should.

by Jordann on Jan 4, 2010 4:18 PM CST up reply actions

I'm glad Kubiak is coming back

and BabyShan leaving opens an interesting door for us next year.

Honestly I don’t know how much influence the kid has/had on our offense after it was revealed that Kubiak called all the plays in 2008 until the last game. Who knows what kind of leash he was on this season?

So add in another offensive mind and we may have better results in the running game, making our entire team better. Or, he could hire another project and just call all the plays in 2010 yet again. Which is probably what will happen.
