Around SBN: Phil Mickelson Outshines Tiger Woods

We've been expecting it, and Kyle Shanahan made if unofficially official today on Fox 26. With the Redskins firing Jim Zorn early this morning, and rumors there won't be much of a review process to replace him, it looks like we'll be losing Little Shanny much sooner than later.

Can you be more transparent in your attempt to get $10M when you’re worth about $3M on the open market, Dunta?

Why?

It was his first season as a DC and had the best defense in franchise history – it does say something. I read earlier in another thread where you disregarded that fact and I understood your reasoning, I just don’t agree with it. To want the guy out afer his first season as DC and helped us to the best defense in franchise history I just don’t get it. Most people were willing to give Kubes another year even at 8-8 but we’re ready to boot the DC after his first and the best in our history. A majority of our losses came from missed kicks or the inability to run at the 1 yard line, or fumbling on the 1 yard line or throwing a HB pass at the 5 yard line. I was pretty impressed with what Bush was able to do with this D this year and lets not forget (I know we haven’t b/c we are already talking about the draft) we don’t have a big run stuffing NT, any shutdown corners and really no one at the FS position. I’m not ready to bail on the guy and I think he earned another year with his performance this year. Just my thoughts.

Look at it this way.

Richard Smith was like that gritty soft serve vanilla ice cream you get when you make your own sundae at a buffet restaurant.

Frank Bush is like a half gallon of good french vanilla.

Yes, the latter is much better than the former, but it’s still just vanilla. I’m not saying we need a Baskin Robbins-esque DC, but some Neapolitan would be nice for a change.

What MDC says above...

What Rivers says here.

FO still has our D ranked 21.

Do we have huge holes in the D? Well, obviously. But all Bush has been, to me at least, is Richard Smith cranked up to 5 from 4. We are a horrible blitzing team, we don’t get nearly enough pressure on the QB, and we still play that damn soft-serve zone (anybody else suddenly in the mood for ice cream now?).

Indy picked us apart, twice, and we looked unprepared. Poisy McPoise dropped Browning Nagle numbers on us his first start. We didn’t prepare at all for Radio.

We improved because of Pollard, Cushing, and Glover, not because of the overall scheme of more Richard Smith.

I wondered if maybe the coaches were spending too much time on that.

Moats was all worried about which hand he held ball in, and just dropped the ball. Maybe the coaches made such a big deal about it, the backs are overly worried about fumbling.

Agree and Disagree w/ you CFH

I agree that this is probably what happened. The coaches probably “taught” things like when to switch the ball.

I disagree that you can have too much coaching-up a RB…..if the coaching is correct. Obviously, we do not employ someone who truly knows how to teach the true basics.

The FO should see who does this for KC. Because Jamaal Charles had a natural talent for fumbling in college, and this year he has only put the ball on the turf 2x in 190 carries. I am making the assumption that this improved because someone coached him on the basics of ball protection.

hopefully dunta could be trade worthy come draft time

so we have to get a CB in the first round. this may seem a little risky but i think we should trade up to a spot in between 10-13 so that joe haden could be a possibility there. or we could just trade dunta and our first round pick to get there but im not sure how much worth dunta is right now to other GM’s. we dont need a safety, wilson and pollard play great together.

by Rockets 4 Life on Jan 4, 2010 1:36 PM CST reply actions

A. We have to sign Dunta to trade him...

which is a cost and risk I’m hoping Rick won’t want to incur.

B. Joe Haden is good, but not near good enough to trade UP for, especially that many places.

C. FS and NT are, imo, a much bigger priority in the first two rounds than CB. No Quin and FreedomCorner are not world beaters, but both are more serviceable than their counterparts at the other positions. (i.e. Quin > Shaun Cody > White Safeties)

D. I hate all current Florida players not named Spikes or Dunlap

E. If we are trading up, which I think is a bad idea to begin with, it had best be for the purpose of selecting Terrence Cody. (Because that selection makes Mario more unstoppable than everyone short of Patrick Willis.)

Rockets>>>>>>Jazz

by Rockets 4 Life on Jan 4, 2010 6:55 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know what to think...

On the one hand, he’s a freakish athlete (360, great strength, quickness off the ball of a guy 80 lbs lighter, and he’s run a (hand-timed) 4.85. Which is why some mocks show him going in the Top 15 (I’ve seen him as high as 5).

On the other, the knock on him is that he doesn’t have the energy to be an every down DT, that his effort waxes and wanes throughout games, and has zero lateral range (which I don’t really consider a knock on a 1-tech DT, but whatev). Which is why some mocks have him going in the 25-32 range.

In the end, though, the fact that we’ve NEVER bothered to put any beef at NT, despite it being a glaring hole since the franchise’s inception (seriously, we never even had a good one in the 3-4, where it’s mandatory), I’m willing to “reach” (in the Kiper sense of the word) for this guy. I think you pencil Mario in for 20 sacks and Amobi for another 10, you help to minimize the weaknesses of the secondary b/c they aren’t covering as long, and you transform your run D overnight.

by Shake on Jan 4, 2010 9:54 PM CST up reply actions

I used to be in the FS camp

but I think I’m convinced a CB1 would benefit us more than an upgrade to Wilson. The upgrade of FS2 and SS2 are a MUST. Priority #1 after all of our other needs.

An upgrade at CB2 moving Quin to FS1 is my hope. But Quin at CB2 w/Frenchy in the nickel is more likely.

Mount Cody in round 1

by texanphil on Jan 5, 2010 7:40 PM CST up reply actions

Correct

That’s the part that people seem to overlook. I NT would create a more effective pass rush, which helps the entire secondary moreso than a single player in the secondary would. More pass rush = everyone covers for a shorter interval; new corner = another guy who has to cover for 1-3 more seconds that he would if there was a consistent rush.

Also, part of the reason we had the “#1” (and, yes, the quotes indicate ironic usage) run defense is because it was so easy to pass on us. NT alleviates this cause, while also providing more strength in run support. Thus you improve the latter and, at worst, see no drop off in the former. A CB does not do this.

UFA

The people getting boned by the lack of CBA will be people still playing (or having just completed) their rookie contracts. Every player from the 2005 draft who signed a five-year contract and every player who signed a four-year deal in 2006 would miss out on eligibility for free agency and revert back to their club as a restricted free agent.

Since Cunta is playing under a one-year franchise deal, that won’t apply.

Anyone know if teams are still likely to get three franchise tags instead of one should 2010 be uncapped? I know that assumption was being thrown around this time last year.

I must disagree here. IF we re-sign Pollard, then we should be OK at the SS position. And then only depth at that position should be an issue.

However, while our current options seem to be serviceable/averageish Free Safeties……I firmly believe that we need a true #1 FS on this team. Ferguson is old as fuck, Wilson is about to enter his 8th year, and Barber may be the better option for our depth at SS. (not sure though)

And since Quin has turned into a pretty damn solid CB, I don’t see him moving to FS anytime soon. Although I still think that he would be a damn good one.

It Would Never Work

Kubiak would be found floating face down in Buffalo Bayou. And the Texan’s 2010 draft would consist of 5 receivers and a kicker.

true

I’m happier sticking with the 5 TEs every draft. More versatile.

A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

Thank jeebus for Hill!

And all three of his plays.

Meanwhile: Kasey Studdard, John Busing, and Brian Russell.

OC Candidates, According To The Chlamydia-cle

Tennessee offensive line coach Mike Munchak, Denver offensive line coach Rick Dennison, Atlanta quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave, and Kansas City offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

Put me in the Mike Munchak camp, if for no other reason than to reunite Munchak & Matthews, and totally PO Bud

We play the Skins in 2010

So all we gotta do is get them in short yardage, goal line situations, and we’ll be fine.

And we know they won’t throw a fade to their star WR in the red zone.

And the new OC could shake things up. I say worst case is a Kubiak run offense, which will be quite good. If Kubiak hires someone whom he trusts, and gives him the reins, it may actually improve.
