The End of the Playoff Drought and Other 2010 Predictions

Psychic_walk_tag_photoweb_medium

via www.ghostshows.com

Let's cut right to the chase. In 2010, the Houston Texans will end their playoff drought of eight years.

There have been many before me who have predicted the End of the Playoff Drought. There is one thing that all of them have in common. They were all wrong! You may think that I am trying to whip up Texans fandom hysteria by making my prediction that the playoff drought will end. You are right!

Here are my other predictions.

Name Game:
Kevin Walter or Jacoby JonesJacoby Jones
Steve Slaton or Arian FosterArian Foster
Dunta Robinson or Glover Quin? Glover Quin

Numbers Game:
Texans Wins:  12
Schaub TD Passes:  40
Defense Rank:  4

Draft Game:
1st Round:  ballhawking Safety
2nd Round:  swift but large Offensive Guard
3rd Round:  the best Defensive Tackle still available

Fill in the blank:
____________ will be even better in 2010.  Andre Johnson
There is no way ____________ will be with the Texans in 2010.  Chris Brown
____________ will be the most improved Texan in 2010.  Connor Barwin

It's all about the money:
DeMeco Ryansresigned
Owen Danielsresigned
Dunta Robinson: Fuck Dunta!

What did I leave out?
The Texans will finish first in the AFC South Division (going 5-1 in the division)
Andre Johnson will be a 1st rounder fantasy player
Unicorns and rainbows will appear after Mario faceplants VY for a safety in the Music City on the way to a righteous rout! Bud Adams will OD on Old Fashions and be rushed from the stadium.

Listening to Koobs,

they didn’t seem too impressed with what Caldwell was doing with his playing time. He also seemed open to Jacoby starting in place of Kevin Walter. I was upset with Koobs for perpetuating the myth that Cunta is a top notch corner though.

Caldwell

was in his first year, and could blossom. (very hopeful)

JJ will supplant KW, and imo, they may not even match KW’s rfa offer if the offer is excessive.

KW did not have a good year, and JJ made a sick amount of plays compared to his playing time.

Walter had a decent year

Ended up with around 660 yards. I think he lost alot of yards to OD early on, not to mention the first two games he missed due to injury.

by nolander on Jan 6, 2010 4:01 PM CST up reply actions

I don't know if Schaub doesn't trust him

or what, cuz he didn’t seem to get many targets.

He did make plays when he was thrown to, and some nice catches at that.

But maybe Schaub didn’t target him because he wasn’t open.

JJ seemed to make big plays more than Walter with a lot less playing time.

And Walter didn’t get a ton more production when OD went down, so I’m not sure OD stole anything from him. I just think Walter wasn’t open all year.

I watched every play of every game

and the only KW catch that sticks out was at the 1 yard line where he showed incredible hands.

I really don’t remember his name being called much past his first game back from injury.

And JJ was the backup, and I remember him making an enormous amount of plays, big plays, as a WR. He needs more time. (Starting WR2 in 2010)

I agree

I was just playing devils advocate with his numbers. Its the lack of TDs that stick out, seems JJ was the one getting the targets in the end zone, same with OD.

Was JJ good because he was in he slot?

Or is he good enough to go against starting corners?

three tags?

Meco, OD, KW seems simple enough to me. KW maybe not, the price may be too steep.

That is, unless Meco agrees to a long term contract. But it gives the FO leverage to keep his salary low.

Mount Cody in round 1

by texanphil on Jan 6, 2010 2:53 PM CST up reply actions

Problem with tagging OD and KW

is the price for both will be ridiculous. Not over-the-cap ridiculous, but high enough due to things like (in OD’s case) KWII’s recent contract than it will likely be more than we want to pay.

Jim Caldwell delenda est.

by MDC on Jan 6, 2010 5:39 PM CST up reply actions

OD is worth a tag

if things don’t work out.

He deserves top 5 money. Thats the tag cost, right?

I agree KW would be way overpriced for a tag, as I said. I think we sign him cheap, or JJ is our WR2 in 2010.

Mount Cody in round 1

by texanphil on Jan 6, 2010 8:38 PM CST up reply actions

TE tag

will be about $4.25M (though I read somewhere else it would be $4.46M…whatever). The more I think about it, the more I think the best play with Daniels, assuming no new CBA, is to tender OD a one-year deal at the level that corresponds with what we want in return. To wit:

The player’s original team maintains the First Refusal Right if the team tenders a contract offer of one year at $1.01 M.

The player’s original team maintains the Right of First Refusal and Draft Selection at the Player’s Original Draft Round (from the team with which he signs) if the team tenders an offer of one year at the same amount(s) listed above OR at least 110% of the player’s prior year’s salary — whichever is greater.

The player’s original team maintains the Right of First Refusal and Second Round Draft Selection (from the team with which he signs) if the team tenders an offer of one year at $$1.545 million OR at least 110% of the player’s prior year’s salary — whichever is greater.

The player’s original team maintains the Right of First Refusal and First Round Draft Selection (from the team with which he signs) if the team tenders an offer of one year at $2.198 million OR at least 110% of the player’s prior year’s salary — whichever is greater.

The player’s original team maintains the Right of First Refusal and First Round Draft Selection and Third Round Draft Selection (both from the team with which he signs) if the team tenders an offer of one year at $2.792 million OR at least 110% of the player’s prior year’s salary — whichever is greater.

Because OD made $2.792M this season, we’d basically have to offer him 10% more money as a tender. If another team signed him to an offer sheet, we’d get a first- and third-round pick. Now, seriously, given that he’s coming off an injury, why in the world would we F-tag him for $4 to $5M when we could pay him just over $3M and dangle him for a first and third? I don’t even think it’s a concern that he would get pissed and not sign the tender until the last minute because he knows we would always have the option of tagging him the next season if he pulled that (and because he needs to prove he’s healthy if he wants a big deal here or elsewhere).

As for K-Dub, it cost the Bucs $9.88M to tag Antonio Bryant last year. I’ll kill someone if Walter gets that, even for a season.

Jim Caldwell delenda est.

by MDC on Jan 7, 2010 8:13 AM CST up reply actions

that sounds right

$3M and a 1st and 3rd if we lose him.

I’d take a 1st and 3rd right now, even without the injury. So that’s a win-win.

Mount Cody in round 1

by texanphil on Jan 7, 2010 2:34 PM CST up reply actions

franchising KW would be the dumbest move they could make

If KW is franchised he would be making top 5 WR money and there is no way you can convince anyone with a brain that he is worth that much, cap or no cap. OD is worth top 5 TE money when healthy and I believe the Texans will take the same approach they took this year with Dunta, franchise the injured player and give him a year to prove what he is now worth.

"Every time you turn on ESPN you see Bama" - Earl Thomas' answer when asked what excites him most about the National Championship.

by TexasHoosier on Jan 6, 2010 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

OD

here’s the thing: a f-tag on a TE next year will cost a team about $4.25M, which is a $1.5M raise for Daniels. That doesn’t sound like a lot until you consider that the average salary for an NFL TE is $863,000 and DeMeco is going to get something north of $6.5M/season on his new deal,

For the sake of comparison, Dreessen’s base salary this year was $600,000 and his total with bonuses was only $1.5M. Dreessen had 21 catches for 253 in eight games after OD went down (2.6 catches, 32 yds/game). More importantly, he had 16 for 207 in the last four games (4 catch, 52 yds/game), which is about the time that everyone started commenting on how he and Schaub seemed to be clicking. Owen’s numbers in his full games average out to 5.6 catches and 71 yds. The biggest discrepancy is that Owen put up 5 TDs to Dreessen’s 1, but considering the team averaged 23.9 pts/game during Owen’s full games and 24.56 in the last night games, I don’t think the TD difference can be dispositive.

Which is all my long-winded way of asking, what pricetag do you put on Daniels’ extra production?

Also worth noting—unless I am mistaken, you can tag a player and then trade him, but it’s a bit of an ordeal in that the second contract pretty much has to (in practice if not by rule) be figured out between the player and the new team before it works. However, if it’s an uncapped year and OD is a RFA instead of an UFA, then the best play might be to give OD a high enough tender that another team signing him to an offer sheet nets you the picks you would have been targeting anyway.

Jim Caldwell delenda est.

by MDC on Jan 6, 2010 8:05 PM CST up reply actions

But Dreesen

dropped the TD pass.

And we need like 6 TE’s on the roster.

And we lost 4 straight games when OD went down. Luckily they weren’t against important teams. (IND, TEN, IND, JAX)

OD may not be worth 4.25 if we can’t afford it. But if we have the cap space, he is worth it, imo.

But JJ became a force this year. That catch v. the Pats looked like a real good NFL receiver making a play when we needed him to.

I know you hate him for the pick 6, but the season as a whole was almost up to the level of a good WR2. And he didn’t start.

My turn

Name Game:
Kevin Walter or Jacoby Jones? Walter Traded, JJ
Steve Slaton or Arian Foster? Arian Foster and Steve Slaton -15lbs 2 headed monster
Dunta Robinson or Glover Quin? Glover Quin and Free agent pickup

Numbers Game:
Texans Wins: 11
Schaub TD Passes: 40
Defense Rank: 3

Draft Game:
1st Round: traded for 2nd rounder and 3 rounder this year and 2nd rounder next year
2nd Round: swift but large Offensive Guard, and Safety
3rd Round: the best Defensive Tackle still available, and best o lineman left

Fill in the blank:
____________ will be even better in 2010. Schaub Leads texans deep into playoffs if not to superbowl and best passing yards in the NFL
There is no way ____________ will be with the Texans in 2010. Chris or Kris Brown
____________ will be the most improved Texan in 2010. Steve Slayton (Back to rookie form)

It’s all about the money:
DeMeco Ryans: resigned
Owen Daniels: Traded for Bad ass DB
Dunta Robinson: Fuck Dunta! or traded for pack of smokes and a fifth of whiskey

What did I leave out?
Peyton gets injured in first play of regular season and we realize how bad the colts can be as they go 2-14

You can't fix Dumb or being a VYFB

by Texans-Brocos on Jan 6, 2010 3:54 PM CST reply actions

we'd have to sign walter

i think, before we trade him.

Oooh ooh my turn

Name Game:
Kevin Walter or Jacoby Jones? Jacoby Jones, Walter walks
Steve Slaton or Arian Foster? Arian Foster 1st and 2nd down back, Slaton 3rd down
Dunta Robinson or Glover Quin? Glover Quin

Numbers Game:
Texans Wins: 12
Schaub TD Passes: 40
Defense Rank: 4

Draft Game:
1st Round: Earl Thomas or possibly Taylor Mays (his senior year sucked, only reason he fell so far; had he left his junior year, we wouldn’t have a snowball’s chance in hell at him)
2nd Round: Mike Iutapi
3rd Round: Best DT left
4th Round: QB if there is a good one. After watching Grossman live up to his last name in taking over for Schaub, I want a better backup and someone to push Schaub. Call it heresy, but Tebow will be better in the NFL than people give him credit for. If you don’t believe me, think about underdogs like Warner and Flutie Flakes.

Fill in the blank:
____________ will be even better in 2010. Arian Foster
There is no way ____________ will be with the Texans in 2010. Chris/Kris Brown
____________ will be the most improved Texan in 2010. James Casey

It’s all about the money:
DeMeco Ryans: resigned, big money
Owen Daniels: resigned (duh), big money
Dunta Robinson: resigned, much less than he asked for, but a fair price

What did I leave out?
The Texans will finish second in the AFC south, going 4-2 (1 loss to Colts, 1 loss to Tits)
Andre Johnson will be the number one WR selected in fantasy drafts
Owen Daniels will get tough competition from James Casey
We pick up a CB in the lower rounds who turns out to be a steal
Schaub won’t have the year he had this year, but only because he will have a better running game. O-line starts to click and we end up with top 5 fewest sacks allowed.

With all the talent available at C and FS in this draft

But I would love it if Iutupa falls to us in the 2nd.

Pouncey's

I’d love to swing picking those two up…LG, C who’ve played together their whole life. Dunno if it could happen though.

Name Game:
Kevin Walter or Jacoby Jones? Jacoby Jones
Steve Slaton or Arian Foster? Both
Dunta Robinson or Glover Quin? Glover Quin

Numbers Game:
Texans Wins: 10-6 (that schedule looks tough, but you never know)
Schaub TD Passes: 40
Defense Rank: 8

Draft Game:
1st Round: Best NT/CB/FS available
2nd Round: Best NT/CB/FS available
3rd Round: Best Interior OL available

Fill in the blank:
____________ will be even better in 2010. Mario Williams
There is no way ____________ will be with the Texans in 2010. Chris/Kris Brown
____________ will be the most improved Texan in 2010. Steve Slaton

It’s all about the money:
DeMeco Ryans: resigned
Owen Daniels: franchise tagged
Dunta Robinson: resigned for far less than 9.9M a year (closer to a 2yr-1.8M contract)

What did I leave out?
Texans will lead the NFL in total offensive yards
Matt Schaub will make the Pro Bowl
Our first round draft pick will be a beast, & we’ll have one late round steal

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

I just hope and pray

Glover is not taking advice from Fred Bennett during the offseason.

Mount Cody in round 1

by texanphil on Jan 7, 2010 2:44 PM CST reply actions

Name Game:
Kevin Walter or Jacoby Jones? Jacoby Jones
Steve Slaton or Arian Foster? Arian (1st and 2nd) Steve (3rd and 4th)
Dunta Robinson or Glover Quin? Glover Quin

Numbers Game:
Texans Wins: 11-5 ( losses: Colts, jags, Ravens, Giants, and Jets [since we’re resting our starters for the playoffs])
Schaub TD Passes: 30
Defense Rank: 5 (but we’ll have a terrible defense that makes this number egregious and inconceivable)

Draft Game:
1st Round: NT – Terrence Cody
2nd Round: S – Nate Allen
3rd Round: CB – Kyle Wilson

Fill in the blank:
____________ will be even better in 2010. Jacoby Jones
There is no way ____________ will be with the Texans in 2010. Terri
____________ will be the most improved Texan in 2010. Amobi Okoye

It’s all about the money:
DeMeco Ryans: resigned 4 yrs- $25M
Owen Daniels: $3M tender (1st and 3rd compensation)
Dunta Robinson: NY Giants sign him on the advice of C.C. Brown

What did I leave out?
Dan Orlovsky will throw 3 TD’s against the Jets in a losing effort in week 19 as we rest our starters for the playoffs. He will keep his feet in the field of play on every snap.
Dunta drops two errant Matt Schaub passes continuing a scoring drive that sends the game to overtime. A wrongly-called Pass Interference on rookie Kyle Wilson leads to the winning G-men drive in OT. David Carr watches it all… from home.
The texans win their first playoff game against the Dolphins, but lose a nail biter at San Diego on a botched fake punt attempt by Alex Henery.

Prediction? Pain.

Name Game:
Kevin Walter or Jacoby Jones? Jacoby Jones
Steve Slaton or Arian Foster? Arian Foster
Dunta Robinson or Glover Quin? Quin

Numbers Game:
Texans Wins: 11
Schaub TD Passes: 38
Defense Rank: 5

Draft Game:
1st Round: A run blocking O-lineman
2nd Round: Safety or Corner with good hands.
3rd Round: Jesus Christ.. Or another lineman.

Fill in the blank:
____________ will be even better in 2010. Cushing
There is no way ____________ will be with the Texans in 2010. Kris Brown
____________ will be the most improved Texan in 2010. Arian Foster

It’s all about the money:
DeMeco Ryans: Resigned
Owen Daniels: Biggest deal the franchise can afford
Dunta Robinson: Resigned. Until we can find a good replacement.

Other predictions.
The Texans will finish (close) 2nd in the division, going 3-3 in division play. (One win on the Colts, and a sweep of either Tits/Jags)
Offense will be ranked #1, with #2 in the pass, and #20 in the run (Inconceivable!)
The last game of the season will be won by Houston, by a last second FG, and not by Kris Brown.
The Texans will at least make it to the AFC championship. Bold prediction, but it could always happen.
