NFL Trade Deadline Open Thread: Where The Prayers Of Texans Fans Go Unanswered

Despite the pleas of many Texans fans (e.g., here and here), it's highly unlikely Rick Smith makes a move, much less an impactful one, before today's 3 p.m. CDT trading deadline.  For all the sense acquiring fill-in-the-blank-with-player's-name-you-covet-here (personally, I drool over Nnamdi Asomugha, and he could be available) might make, history and smart money say the 2010 Houston Texans aren't going to prominently feature any new blood after the bye week.

But we can dream, can't we? This is your open thread for all things NFL trade deadline. Go.

Who is Houston Working out today?

Rumor has it Houston is trying out LB’s and RB’s who are they and will they be the defensive fire starter we need to jump start our poor secondary?

yes jump start one of the most porous defenses in the league. We need a fire starter like we got with Pollard last year to get things rolling again.

Yes but...

Pollard helpes our RUN game because we used him as a 4th LB. How are RBs or LBs going to fix this secondary?

Because if and i use IF, we get a RB to replace Slaton, we can then HOPE for trade bait to get a decent CB. It was rumored that we were auditioning LB and RB, I am not there so I was just asking, and hoping something would come to light.

I was mostly being sarcastic. Its hard to say Slaton doesn’t have it any more, just because he isn’t a good kick returner. I thought he had been looking better as a rb recently, but he got no carries sunday cause of ward. Also SCREEN PASSES MOTHERFUCKER, DO YOU SPEAK IT? /addressed to Dennison

my incoherrent thoughts

If Champ Bailey can be had for a 4th, do it NOW!

That being said, I have to say I’m not opposed to taking lumps it if helps Kareem Jackson’s learning curve. With #59 down for the season, I’m going to shelve my SB hopes for this season and settle for targeting a playoff berth. And a win in the first round. KJ and GQ are the guys Kubes is determined to develop and rely on for the long haul. Let’s keep getting them experience.

I’m in complete agreement with the opposition to the zone pass D. Let’s play press-man and live and learn with it.

I had expected with Ray Rhodes on the staff, we’d be seeing more improvement in the secondary.

I thought David Gibbs was a better secondary coach than we’re seeing.

Here’s hoping Mario’s groin heals during these two weeks before the next game so we can have a pass rush. And along that line, I think what we’re seeing is that Frank Bush in developing his strategy for this season must’ve been relying tremendously on Connor Barwin and the wide range of uses his athleticism provided. All that went out the window with Barwin on IR and Bush hasn’t found an alternative to bring creativity to the Pass D.

The offense needs to learn from the Giants game. Our O will have to grind clock from here on out. We cannot leave this depleted D on the field against, well, anyone, especially the team we face in the next 8 games in particular.

Here’s hoping the quality of equipment can catch up to the modern advancements in physical training.

by FreeRange on Oct 19, 2010 11:42 AM CDT up reply actions

Sounds like the steroid bargain to me.

I’m all for erring on the side of safety when it comes to the general populace, but if a highly specific compensated portion of America (the football players) wants to gamble with their after-NFL livelihoods with the potential to gain millions of dollars as the motivation, I’m absolutely fine with it. And it seems like more than anything, players are complaining about the policies rather than embracing them.

Now of course, if the union wants to come out and be fervently pro-safety, then that’s all well and good. I do think they should chase post-NFL benefits for their clients either way, because even toned down, it’s probably the most dangerous sport.

My reasons for wanting the hits to stay are purely selfish; this league is turning into the Arena League with every rule change. You can’t continually dis-incentive-ise defensive rules and expect the game to have any semblance of balance. But even beyond that, I’m not going to have a problem with it as long as the players know the risks.

by riversmccown on Oct 19, 2010 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

But how has the game changed for the worse?

The more injuries = the more chance a Matt Leinart gets to start.

Helmet to helmet, defenseless receivers. You’re not taking away from the essence of the game in the least. I’d rather have the DeSean Jacksons on the field rather than getting MRIs.

Because by making that exchange you unbalance game theory even further.

KC Joyner grouped the coaches, historically, into four different groups: Talent – Scheme, and Athletic – Hitter. If you get rid of the hitters, you’re going to see a bunch of teams playing the same game. I prefer strategic balance. Part of the reason the Chiefs game was so good was that we had a hitter/talent team versus a scheme/athletic team.

Put another way, would the 2000 Ravens have won any of the last four Super Bowls? Probably not. They don’t have a good enough quarterback to compete when you take away the advantages their defense had.

To fight single player arguments with single player arguments: Kurt Warner. I know that’s not exactly fair, and that injuries do weaken teams. But where exactly is the study claiming that injury rates have gone down with the defensive rules we’ve changed already?

by riversmccown on Oct 19, 2010 12:06 PM CDT up reply actions

Tough question to answer

The NFL still denies the seriousness and long-term implications of concussions.

I’m not saying don’t play tough. You can still have hitters. But do you need helmet-to-helmet hits? Do you need to hit defenseless receivers? Go after QB’s knees? These are neither integral parts of football nor important facets to a “hitter” team.

The average military salary is a fraction of that

and they end up with far more “life altering” effects due to the nature of their selected job path. Just the same the players of the NFL could chose to make a fraction of what they make now and not risk any injury at all and join the workforce. They chose to make the money and play a game they will not get sympathy from me.

that you assume risk in any profession you chose. It’s a risk/reward sort of situation. They risk getting injured in order to be in the NFL, if it is too much of a risk, they should do something else. What's the statistics on "vicious" hits anyway?

3 people received fines from the past weekend. 3 players for three hits, one hit per player.

There’s 53 players per team, 106 players in a game x 7-8 games per Sunday is almost 850 players. (Granted all players don’t play.)

Then there’s what, ~150 plays per game. 150 plays in a game x 7-8 games = ~1200 plays on any given Sunday.

~1200 hard hitting plays with between ~850 players and there is only THREE “vicious” hits?

My math could be all wrong, and please correct me if I am, after all I did go to UofH, but…

…seems like muchado about nothing.

I’m surprised there’s not more. Am I the only one who sees this as rather stable?

by CowboyH8ter on Oct 19, 2010 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Except now you're getting into subjectivity....

what exactly is a “defenseless receiver?” What exactly is a flagrant hit? This is starting to put the game in the hands of the refs and I don’t like it for that reason. I am all for safety, but such subjective rules bug the crap out of me.

The subjectivity is exactly why the rules committee got rid of the inbounds/out of bounds call. Either you come down with it in bounds or you didn’t….none of this “Well he might have come down with it in bounds if the Earth had stopped rotating for a split second.”

A player interviewed made the comment “You know it when you see it.” Well the same thing was said about pornography and how well is that going?

How much subjectivity is there on roughing the passer?

95% of the time, there’s no question. I don’t see how the defenseless receiver question is any different.

Officiating a game, by definition, is subjective. Just ask Chiefs fans.

Someone posted a series of clips on here somewhere....

and there was a hit on Reggie Bush that to me I would have called a “defenseless receiver” hit…..I’ll guarantee that if 10 other people watched it there would not be 10 people agreeing with me.

There are also roughing the passer penalties I don’t agree with either. You’re right, 95% of them there is no question, but when one of those 5% makes the difference in a game (and I mean really makes a difference in a game)…..I would say there needs to be some sort of definition…..not just “You know it when you see it.”

And I know how it is to officiate, I officiated soccer for awhile….in the flow of the game it is difficult to see everything.

And I couldn't disagree with YOU more, bfd...

That’s exactly what they are, and there is a HUGE pay differential associated with it.

And the rumors of “ex post facto” enforcement just piss me OFF. To say that you are going to suspend players for hits that happened this weekend is total crap.

I’m hoping for injury-free football, but without the contact, I might as well be watching baseball [shudders].

Ex post facto sucks

Agree.

The pay differential is less than you think. The average player lasts three years. The LTs and Schaubs and Marios are the exceptions salary-wise, not the rule. If you’re 30 and can’t think straight, what does your future hold?

Personally, what I hate the most is the marked decline in quality of play.

OK

Let’s take TF’s military analogy and run with it.

Didn’t we used to line up infantry in a line, at close range, and have them shoot at each other with muskets that shredded the human body?

Then, we built barricades. We dug trenches. We built the Maginot Line. Wait, forget that. We created body armor, armored vehicles, and we give our troops counseling on how to deal with the mental aspects.

What do all these things do? They keep soldiers safe. We’ve learned that it’s a helluva lot better – on every level – to improve from the Napoleonic Era “let them die in the fields” to equipped medical teams. We know more NOW about keeping soldiers safe – and happy! – than we did then.

I don’t see how wanting to keep football players safe is any different. Better equipment, better knowledge, not lining up in front of cannons. Silly little things like that.

Because, Durga knows, the weapons are better, bigger, faster, and stronger, and you’ve got to keep your troops safe.

I am all for giving them better padding

But their job is to hurt eachother for our amusement and they are well compensated for it. As to the military, we have come up with new methods of doing so, but a soldier’s job is to kill people and break things on command. Both of these professions come with risks and you have to make the choice as to whether or not it is worth it for you to assume that risk.

BFD, you slightly misinterpreted the nature of my comment

My issue is with the terminology, not the principle. It’s a great game, and part of the reason these players are paid so godawful much is that they’re forced into retirement far earlier than your average office jockey.

The league does have a responsibility to protect their players, and I’m proud to support a league that is proactive in doing so. However, let’s be particular enough in our phrasing that this rule won’t take away from what makes the game so great.

by pattymcgee on Oct 19, 2010 11:59 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Then there should be nothing wrong with taking away flagrant, helmet to helmet hits, right?

That’s not what makes the game great, but it does lead directly to more injuries.

I was taught to never, ever lead with the helmet, and I believe in that philosophy.

Helmet-to-Helmet is not what they are talking about tho...

Dunta’s hit was entirely legal shoulder-to-shoulder contact…

I’ve got no problem with suspending helmet-to-helmet… They are suspending for hard hits… I have a problem with that.

I think you have some unrealistic expectations at game speed.

And adding still one more subjective call that the refs can make is going to lead to more and more games decided in a ref’s head. I don’t like that.

Worse still...

You’ve got the ilk of Goodell sitting around on Monday, deciding whether or not to gut your defense for the next n weeks.
You’ve got defensive players hesitating, which causes injuries as well, by the way.
I just think it’s a disastrous path to go down.
Manage the cheap shots other ways…
Throw murderous thugs out of the league (Fat Albert) and the rest will get the message.
But what triggered this reaction is a legal hard hit within the flow of the game and that is what is troubling to me. They make a big deal out of this and let thugs like Haynesworth et al keep getting rich.

by DilloTex on Oct 19, 2010 12:16 PM CDT up reply actions

Throw murderous thugs out of the league (Fat Albert) and the rest will get the message.

Then perhaps I wasn't clear... sorry...

I think that they need to firmly and consistently deal with acts of violence that happen on the field that are flagrant VIOLATIONS of the rules before they obsess over hard hits that fall within the rules. I think that it is SHAMEFUL that a player gets one of the biggest paydays in the history of the game after trying to stomp a man’s head in after a play.

And I think that refusing to deal with that type of conduct while hypocritically pretending to care about the safety of the players by introducing a “that hit was too hard” variable into a fast moving contact sport will kill it.

Here's something to chew on...

Slaton trade value might actually make sense to a few good defensive teams -

Tampa Bay
Green Bay
Washington

All teams that have some issues at RB depth. They are also teams that have some depth and/or choices at LB and/or CB. I doubt we can get a HR either position, but I do think we can get something better than what we have.

On a completely homer side note – I wish the Texans made a 6th or 7th round pitch to the Bengals for Quan Cosby, who would significantly make our KR/PR game better and then would totally free up Jacoby to focus on WR.

I do think that if the Texans are serious about going all in for the playoffs this year, they have to do something. Maybe not Randy Johnson to the Astros deadline quality, but a couple of moves nonetheless…

Is everyone really sitting around waiting on the trade deadline?

This is the NFL. I would be shocked if there was more than a handful of minor deals for back up type players and late round picks.

Oakland is only a game out of first in a weak division. Does anyone really think you could pry away an elite corner from them for less than a Herschel Walker type package? I know it’s the Raiders, and Al Davis is crazy….but he’s crazy enough to think they are going to the Superbowl.

Smith isn't going anywhere?

So that’s reason to blame Kubiak for the job Smith did or didn’t do? That makes no sense. Just because everyone puts blame on the head coach doesn’t mean that’s right.

We have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes. Kubiak could be begging Smith to make a deal, but Smith isn’t willing to give up the picks or pay the salary. You’re going to go ahead and just blame everything on Kubiak even though he doesn’t necessarily even have control over what you are bitching about.

I’m not trying to defend Kubiak, I just don’t understand people getting angry at him when we have no idea if he’s the right person to get angry with.

I was supporting your case there...

Lol. NFL GMs consider Free Agency the safer, simpler option.

The NFL doesn’t need the trade deadline to be flashy, the league is plenty fun enough to watch (save last night’s Monday Night College Football Rivalry Game). Why would the commissioner want to break a working formula? Just to appease the hardcore fans? Same with the GMs.

The reality is if a GM wants his team to be different, than he should make it different and be a risk-taker.

What from this F.O. leads anyone to believe they would be remotely capable of taking a risk? It’s beyond me.

And to add to this...

It’s been said time and again (by our own coach no less) that this team is built mostly to beat Indy, because they have been the division leader. How often have the Colts made deadline deals? Once…in 2002. For Booger. BOOGER. Granted, the team went onto the championship that season because Booger helped shore up their run defense…

But that doesn’t sound like our F.O. unfortunately. They draft the players they want, or trade in the off-season to get them. They’ll sign for depth, making a single splash of minor proportions. They’ll bring in incompetent defense coordinators because the Head Coach wants an offensive team.

When you have an offense minded head coach, you’re focus is on offense. Look at Chicago during their defense-only seasons. They were so focused on the defense that they made horrible decisions regarding the offense, and sadly, just like it’s hurting us now, it hurt them, too.

Teams in the NFL need a balance, a good balance, to be better than just good. The offense is elite, but if the defense can’t stop the opposition then what happens when the offense struggles?

It’s the NFL Coaching and GM Paradox, and it rarely works out properly.

That's the history of 90% of the front offices in the league

There’s way more than one area of the team struggling. Our LB’s have been horrible in coverage. All of them….and that was with Demeco. Safeties have been just as bad. TEs and RBs have killed us in the passing game. One or two trades is not going to fix that. This isn’t the NBA or MLB where one player can drastically make over a whole team.

by Mark in Kingwood on Oct 19, 2010 1:16 PM CDT reply actions

I'm going to explain WHY the F.O. is smart NOT to pick up a secondary player at this point in the season...

If they don’t fire Frank Bush this week, then they should wait for the pro-bowl caliber secondary.

Do you really want to see Frank Bush’s scheme and inability to coach players and utilize their athleticism and Durga-given abilities break any future pro-bowlers? Do you really want to see Asamoghu come here and become so pissed at Frank Bush that he demands a trade in the off-season?

Until they resolve the coaching issue on defense, I don’t think any defensive recruits (save the DLine) are worthwhile.

by Fuzion on Oct 19, 2010 1:18 PM CDT reply actions

While, I might agree with you about this Frank Bush defense showed some sparks of life last season, and I would believe that we would have left off where we were last season but that was a few months off, and now we need to knock off the rest of the rust and move on to where we were at the end of last seaon, obviously with out a couple key players, but individuals don’t make the team.

by R. B. on Oct 19, 2010 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying they shouldn't make moves,

I’m just saying they have to balance the worth of the move now and it’s overall effect on the team versus letting Bush sit with what he has and forcing him to coach better.

Until Bush gets better with his coaching, it’s useless to bring in better players. I for one don’t want to see some pro-bowl caliber CB or FS come in and takeover and have no difference in our pass coverage abilities. Sure, we’d for sure have no Frank Bush at the end of the season, but overall we’d feel the effect of it for a while.

by Fuzion on Oct 19, 2010 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Don't get me wrong though,

If I were the Front Office, I’d be canning Bush this week, right this minute. I’d be hiring a college defensive coordinator, and I’d give him two weeks to install his scheme, while bringing in Asamoghu and other defensive players, so they’d have time to adjust.

by Fuzion on Oct 19, 2010 1:22 PM CDT up reply actions

he is just crap, he coaches off of players weak points not there strong points, if he let them play the way all the fans know they can we will be a much better defense.

by R. B. on Oct 19, 2010 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

He is utter crap.

Hell, he makes crap look like a polished turd straight from the donkey’s hind quarters.

Our CBs are still NFL caliber players, and the only reason they have struggled so much isn’t their youth, it’s their coach. Playing 5-9 yards off the line, rarely blitzing, the list goes on and on and on and on and on…et al.

It’s sad, but it’s the fact of our defense. Coaching breeds a better defense, and with a better defensive coach, this defense as it is would be pretty darn good.

by Fuzion on Oct 19, 2010 1:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Frank Bush deserves all the criticism he gets

But is it his fault that no less than five players failed to bring down Charles when they had him stopped for a big loss only to let him gain 8+? Was it his fault that two players completely whiffed on a tackle to let Bowe turn a short catch into a TD. Is it Bush’s fault that we have no one on the roster who seems to be even remotely capable of covering a TE.

Criticize all you want, but you have to look at all of the parts. Not just the ones that are popular to blame. I think most Texans fans have a decidedly over rated view of the ability of our defensive players.

"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair

by papabear on Oct 19, 2010 1:29 PM CDT up reply actions

Do mistackles by 5 guys count on all 5?

Yes, but also, when you look at the sum of the parts, you note an existing and common trend. It’s not like we haven’t seen this from a Bush scheme before (a la weeks 1-3 of last season).

As the F.O., if you believe that Bush IS the problem, and that your defense is good enough to compete were it not for Bush, then you stick with the players you have and either wait until the end of the season to give Bush his walking papers, or you get rid of him now and bring in someone else.

You do not blow up a decent cast of players with true talent (and don’t tell me they don’t have any). It’s just not worth it in THIS NFL.

by Fuzion on Oct 19, 2010 1:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Besides...

They haven’t been horrible at missed tackles this season. Not great, just not horrible either. So suddenly they get sloppy. Blame it on the players if you want, but I think that’s coaching. 4 weeks of semi-decent tackling followed by 2 weeks of inconsistent tackling = coaching.

by Fuzion on Oct 19, 2010 1:32 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not just talking about the tackling

I do think Bush is part of the problem, but the LBs and S are just flat out not good in coverage. Our defense is supposed to be pretty basic…but they continually fail to even execute “basic” right or flat out don’t have the skill to stay with the guys they are supposed to cover. The defense does have some talent and a savvy DC could get more out of them, possibly even a lot more…but ignoring the deficiencies in personnel doesn’t make them go away.

"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair

by papabear on Oct 19, 2010 1:38 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes.

We need better players, in the long run. But just like you said earlier, in the NFL, one player won’t make a huge impact on a team. It requires many moves to change the direction the defense is going. A single better player would be nice, but with Frank Bush, he’s not going to improve the shit we see stinking up the field week in nad week out.

It should be Frank and the secondary minus Eugene Wilson running wind sprints. Eugene Wilson should have footballs shot out of a throwing machine until he catches 90 out of 100 passes thrown at him.

I have been posting this same thing over and over....

Haynesworth is NOT WORTH EVEN A 5TH OR 6TH ROUND PICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I watched the tits while he was there! He didn’t do jack until the last year of his rookie contract. Since he was good that year tits either franchised or RFA him (I don’t remember) and LOADED his contract with performance incentives. If he didn’t do jack, he didn’t make jack! He still took plays off as papa pointed out, but he played out of his mind most of the time.

He then wanted WAYYYYYYYY more money than tits wanted to pay because the were afraid of EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED IN WASHINGTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He got the money and quit playing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for all the caps….this “trade for Haynseworth BS is getting under my skin.” He is a non-performing waste of air and space douchenozzle that won’t play unless there’s money on the line and he has so much now he will NEVER play well again.

I wasn't commenting on his motor on the field

I’m saying he was rotated in and out of the game. The Titans were deep on the defensive line then. They rotated all of their lineman to keep them fresh, but I seem to remember that Haynesworth only saw about 60% of their defensive snaps one year (I could be completely wrong about that).

I mean we had a lot of new guys in the secondary and constant rotations of suckitude. Maybe all they need is a chance to keep their heads from spinning. I’m trying to find a positive here because that defense has been nearly non existent for 6 weeks. also we play the colts after the bye week so maybe we’ll see some of that aggressive defense that we saw in week one. oh and hopefully tons of drops by the colts receivers.

Texans to trade steve Slaton and their next three first round picks to Green Bay for IR’d Tight End Jermichael Finley. Kubiak, a believer in the versatility of tight ends said that this will ensure that they don’t experience the drop-off next year that they experienced last year after Daniels injury. How is it that all of us over here at BRB...

..a community comprised of engineers, teachers, plumbers, gay escorts, corporate clowns and any other profession OTHER than a member of the Houston Texans FO, can clearly see that although this team is 4-2 thru 6 games and sits tied for the top spot in the AFC, does NOT have what it takes as a complete team to make a LEGIT run at the Super Bowl? But the people that we have in charge cannot see that. Or are we just shooting to have a better record than last year? Because if thats the case then this organization sucks.

Thats not true

Our situattion is unique. We just extended our unproven coach, we have been trying to get over the hump for the last 3 seasons and have the talent on the field to have a shot THIS year. A year before a possible lock out or a hard salary cap. We are in a division that has three teams tied for first place int he AFC so a 10-6 record might not even get us a wildcard spot. After the vye would have been the first time we could have played as a full team with Duane Brown and Cushing both back, now we lost Demeco and are still with Connor Barwin. Its not rocket science that our defense is an absolute joke and we do NOTHING schematically to change that. Now that Kubiak has been signed on for a few more years does he think we are willing to wait until the end of his next contract to be dominant?

by theSpaceCityKid on Oct 19, 2010 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

There is nothing unique about our situation

There are plenty of teams off to a decent enough start to think they can make a run at the playoffs with obvious holes to fill on their roster…you could make that argument for nearly the entire league. As for Kubiak being extended, so what? His contract isn’t guaranteed. McNair could give him the AX tomorrow if he wanted to.

I want to hear the other teams (especially in the AFC) that are in the same situation as us.

You cant name one bc the other 4-2 or better teams in the AFC are either average or better in Total O and Total D so far except Pittsburgh with Offense and they just got Rothlisberger back adn that includes TWO teams from OUR OWN DIVISION. However WE are not even close to average on defense we are DEAD LAST. I would say that is a unique position.

by papabear on Oct 19, 2010 3:00 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe they can see it

but there’s nothing to do about it. For all we know, Rick Smith called all 31 other GMs in the league to see what he could get for a FS or CB, but he couldn’t get a reasonable price. And personally, I’d rather stand pat than mortgage our future on a stopgap player. It takes two to make a trade, and it’s perfectly possible the Texans just couldn’t find a taker.

by cubic on Oct 19, 2010 3:05 PM CDT up reply actions

or maybe they can't

but hope we are all uneducated enough to think we would believe them when they told us they tried, but no news outlets will post any thing to prove that they attempted anything.

by R. B. on Oct 19, 2010 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Why would the Texans admit anything?

Telling the whole world that they tried to bring in players sends the message to current players that they don’t believe in them. Even if you don’t believe in them it’s not a very good motivational technique.

by papabear on Oct 19, 2010 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions

Whats more motivating than the possiblity of losing your job?

Whos feelings are we protecting? If our guys (coaches and players alike) havent realized that the defensive play our team has put out will not cut it then they need to know ASAP. And if it isnt known in our organization that there are too many talented people in this industry and this is too big of a market with too much money put into it for us to go ONE SUNDAY with someone at a position that doesnt deserve it.

by theSpaceCityKid on Oct 19, 2010 4:49 PM CDT up reply actions

There are only five players

who are safe from having their feelings hurt… The Great One!, Arian “Mr. Undrafted!” Foster, Matt Schaub, Mario Williams, and Brian Cushing. Anyone else can be legitimately replaced at any time. The only reason I say Mario is because even if you brought in a better DE, he would go opposite Mario not replace, Cushing is safe because of LB default he is just the best damn tackler of the corps.

If a guy's in danger of losing his job he already knows it

He’s likely been getting his ass chewed in the film room on a weekly basis. There’s no reason to bring it up in public so him and his teammates have to answer questions about it constantly. There’s a big difference between what is said to the media and what is said in the locker room. It’s not about protecting feelings, it’s about keeping those things “inside” the team.

On top of that, it is just poor marketing to admit you tried to get someone but failed. There isn’t one good reason a team would ever voluntarily admit they tried to trade for a player but couldn’t get it done. There is zero benefit to it, and will only hurt the effort to sell the fans on the team and keep them coming out and buying $7.50 beers.

You here rumors, but very rarely will you ever hear a team say anything other than we explored our options. Now if they end up signing the guy as a FA down the road you ALWAYS hear about this is a guy we have been trying to get for years kind of talk.

Houston Traded no one for no one, which will give them the exact same problems on defense they had before going into the bye week. Even though there were options available to them and all teams in the NFL no team took advantage of it, especially the TEXANS. Well lets hope Smith, Kubiak, Bush, whoever we choose to blame can finish out this season better than 9-7 and make a presence in the playoffs.

No one's going to lead with their head then.

They do now because of their helmet “protects” them.

THIS

It’s the obvious solution.

Wake up, things might get rough. No need to stress, keeps you down too much. Wake up, I heard they found a solution. Where will you be for the Revolution?

by Colts Homer on Oct 19, 2010 4:08 PM CDT up reply actions

You are naive.

“More protection” is the reason they got away from leather helmets in the first place. The only way they stop leading with their heads is if they are coached not to from a very young age.

by texanslady on Oct 19, 2010 4:22 PM CDT up reply actions

I see no evidence anywhere that players are actually coached on the fundamentals of tackling at any age

by papabear on Oct 19, 2010 4:30 PM CDT up reply actions

wait what?

i thought Duntas tackle was picture perfect in comparison to what we were taught at every level. Get low, put your facemask into the opposing players chest and explode upwards. I get teh defenseless WR rule but helmet to helmet contact should only be illegal if it is the INITIAL contact, and what if the offensive player lowers his helmet and hits a defensive player coming in to tackle him?

by theSpaceCityKid on Oct 19, 2010 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

He put his head down/ kind of tucked his chin into his chest

Hit what you see, see what you hit. If you go back and look at most of the serious neck injuries they often happen when a guy has his head down like that. I cringe every time I see someone do that.

He did lead with his shoulder. Which is good, but that wasn’t what I would call a textbook tackle either. I don’t think it was dirty by any means…but if he had led with his head in that position he might not be walking right now.

by papabear on Oct 19, 2010 4:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Definitely not dirty

He didn’t wrap up nor was his head up, but not dirty….just taking advantage of the pads.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Oct 19, 2010 4:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes....

but then you see what evolution brings: helmets made of tougher materials…now its akin to putting a concrete block on your head which players are using as weapons because, as theSpaceCityKid is saying, players are coached up with: Bury your facemask and explode upwards.

Yes, Dunta did it correctly, and there’s more people who do it right than don’t, but there are headhunters, and there is a fearlessness when you’re in these big pads. While players have gotten bigger and faster…the pads have gotten tougher and tougher. Add it up and it’s a car crash.

Leather helmets may be extreme, but, right now, they do just as much harm as they do good.

"Lord, beer me strength."

by TexansDC on Oct 19, 2010 4:47 PM CDT up reply actions

It's not protection

If it was protection there wouldn’t be 6 players with concussions on the Eagles. I’ve never seen that many in rugby. They are just weapons.

Wake up, things might get rough. No need to stress, keeps you down too much. Wake up, I heard they found a solution. Where will you be for the Revolution?

by Colts Homer on Oct 19, 2010 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

There would be less concussions

Players wouldn’t lower their heads. I’m not sure what the lawsuits would be for either.

Dunta got the same thing as Merriweather

Merriweather’s hit was helmet to helmet. Dunta’s really wasn’t. It’s not right…even though I hate seeing guys go into tackles with their heads down like that (for their own safety as much as the guy they are hitting).

Can anyone tell me how this makes sense?
HOUSTON (AP)—The Houston Texans have released tackle Ephraim Salaam and waived linebacker David Nixon.
The 6-3, 225-pound Nixon played in the second half of Sunday’s game against Kansas City after All-Pro middle linebacker DeMeco Ryans ruptured his left Achilles’ tendon. Nixon, in his second season, made seven tackles in Sunday’s 35-31 win over Kansas City.

I can understand about Salaam, but I do not understand about Nixon. He played well from what I saw on Sunday. Don’t we need LBs?

My guess would be...

… that between the three injured LBs that should be back by Indy that they think they have it covered.
My hope would be that they are clearing a roster spot for some BOFFO free agent pickup.

Merriman can sign with another once he’s healthy since the Chargers will be forced to cut him. Don’t see him coming here though, he’d be crap in a 4-3 Defense
