But if you get the first down,
you are guaranteeing a victory in regulation for you team outright. Why should the Patriots have any trust in their defense to prevent the Chargers from getting 50-60 yards? Trust in a unit means nothing when it comes time for the unit to perform. The Pats’ offense is clearly their best unit, and the Chargers had 3 timeouts and a full 2 minutes, which is an eternity.
They didn’t give the Colts the victory. If the Pats had punted, I have no doubt that Peyton would have driven the ball down the gassed defenders’ throats and gotten the TD anyway. Going for it on 4th down gave the Pats the best chance to win, which is what you expect from a coach’s in-game decision making.

First of all,
I wouldn’t be surprised if Belichick has gone for it on 4th down a thousand times. He typically has 2+ of those a game from the times I’ve watched the Patriots. Second, that’s the purpose of the league and independent sites keeping stats on all of the 4th down conversion attempts since practically when the league started keeping play-by-plays. Using stats to make decisions...
Is, honestly, redicules. Sure, you factor in what’s been done in the past and what amount of success it has met with, but you don’t use it as the sole basis of your decision and lots of times it’s not even a major factor. If that were the case everyone would go for it on 4th down every time and they obviously don’t. Are you saying that the coaches that decide to punt it are incompetent or they aren’t aware of the statistics?

Let me say I have a lot of respect for Coach Dungy. I also think that convincing someone skeptical is difficult, and we shouldn’t expect someone to immediately come around. In general though, coaches (and former players/analysts) benefit from a perception that football is some unknowable mystery, and that they are the only priests that can divine the true answers.
From Dungy’s perspective, he’s enjoyed long career by doing it the conventional way. But the reason his way worked was because everyone else played the same way. To change his mind now might mean admitting, “I did it wrong all these years.” That’s a tough hurdle to overcome.
It starts with something like this—planting a seed of doubt that the conventional wisdom might not be so wise. A smart young coach will one day figure it out, maybe in college, and everyone else will be forced to catch up. It’s amazing that this particular 4th down was a failure, but it has done more to advance the subject than any other 4th down play, including all the successful ones.

In what way did I present a false choice?
And yes, the argument that if it was right everyone would do it is old and tired, but your assertion that head coaches who get payed shit-tons of money to make decisions like this are making such an obvious error over and over again is kind of silly. There are lots of mitigating factors that go into each and every individual “going for it on 4th down” choice. You cannot boil it down to such a simplistic blanket statistic like “what percentage of the time does it work” and then use that to make all of your decisions.

You’re just being obstinate and picking at the unimportant parts of my statement. I asked if you thought they were incompetent or unaware of the statistics. You could easily have answered “No, I think they are doing it because of X.” Instead you try to circumvent answering me by twisting my statement into some kind of logical fallacy and then offering up a quote from someone else with no indicator as to whether or not you share this opinion.
And please, in the future, don’t quote “A Rulebook for Arguments” to me. I went to college too, smart guy.

I didn't circumvent answering anything.
You completely ignored the substance of what I quoted. I didn’t think I needed to spell it out for you, but yes, I agree with it. As said in the quote above, “everybody does it” (which is not true, anyway) because:
1. Coaches are notorious for not accepting or listening to any outside arguments about their decision making.
2. Being conservative and only going for it on any 4th down (regardless of range) is the conventional wisdom. Just because it’s the conventional wisdom doesn’t make it right. Also, conventional wisdom takes a long time to change, especially with the stubbornness of coaches as mentioned in point 1.
Just because a coach is paid millions of dollars to make a decision doesn’t mean that he is going to make the right decision. Arguing the opposite is silly in itself. Here’s a more exaggerated example of coaches paid millions and millions of dollars making the same error over and over again:

Sure, there are mitigating factors involved in each play and each decision, such as the performance of both your offense and defense at the time and time on the clock. In that decision though, what mitigating factors were present to override the stats the show a high probability of converting the 4th down and having an automatic game? What I saw was a Pats offense that was thriving all game on 4 yard passes to TE’s that SD didn’t have an answer for and a Pats defense that held tough at the beginning of the game, and began a fast decline to being a complete sieve on the drive before the 4th and 1. In my mind, that actually makes me more likely to go for the first down there.
It sure did seem like you were narrowing the coach’s decision down to 2 choices (incompetence or ignorance), but that part of it was meant as an addendum to the comment as I had addressed the substance of it above that part of the comment.
Oh, and in the future, don’t ever throw that college argument in my face. Ever. Never in my comment did I even remotely mention that I’m in college or my college education, and I certainly didn’t use that as any sort of justification. I also didn’t call you dumb. You asked how you were making it a false choice argument, so I quoted the relevant portion of the argument and the relevant portion of the definition of a false choice argument to support my point.
I make sure in all of my comments not to use a college education as any sort of justification or come off with some kind of superiority complex, and I won’t have that start now. BTW, I didn’t learn about the false choice argument from college or any kind of book. I learned it as a junior in high school (and other fallacy arguments) from a Wikipedia link in an online story about the problems with political polls.

But I don’t see how it can compare to the pure, natural, 100 percent legal high I get from drinking alcohol. Who needs the artificial escape drugs provide when a good, stiff belt of Jim Beam or José Cuervo can put your head in the clouds while keeping your feet firmly planted on the ground?
Now, maybe you don’t care for alcohol. That’s okay. What’s not okay, though, is getting hooked on an addictive, controlled substance like pot, cocaine, or heroin. Find a healthy substitute, something you can get really into, something that can be your anti-drug. It could be anything: Learn to play blackjack or the ponies. Explore kleptomania. Have sex with an endless parade of random strangers. Anything that makes you feel good, as long as it isn’t drugs.

I’ve enjoyed watching the obvious joy that Favre has playing the game, but it has just become a grim death-march and it’s time for him to hang it up.
I feel particularly sorry for his wife having to go through this crap; she seems like a class act.
