Texans Cut Frank Okam
According to Anna Megan, Frank Okam is no longer with the team. Have to say I'm just as surprised it took this long as I am about when it has happened.
More details as they emerge.
UPDATE: Here are the details from Berman:
The Houston Texans released defensive tackle Frank Okam Monday and added two players to the roster and one to the practice squad. The Texans signed free agent defensive tackle Damione Lewis who spent his first five years in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams and the next four seasons with the Carolina Panthers.
He went to camp in 2010 with the New England Patriots, but was released prior to the season opener. He owns 22.5 career quarterback sacks.
The Texans also signed free agent linebacker Stanford Keglar who spent his first two seasons in the league with the Tennessee Titans. The Texans added defensive end Tim Jamison, who was with the team last year and in training camp in 2010, to the practice squad.

I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.
Is this as good as confirmation
that we are signing Jamarcus Russel to play DT?

so the tweet I got says
temporarily, until Adibi comes back later this week. So why practice at MLB if he’s not gonna play there on Monday?

I'd rather keep Bentley as ST Captain and Star
With Sharpton out there somewhere…
Apparently, Kubes wants Cushing there to be the leader.
"Lord, beer me strength."
From a leadership standpoint I like it
but from a letting Cushing go out and make plays aspect, not so much.

Why scared? Bentley and Diles can contain Chris Johnson around the out.....URP......
Excuse me….need to throw up.

I don't have the link...
Cuz I’m lazy.
But according to the comicle, we signed DT 6’2" 301lbs that Pats released earlier in preseason, and a LB Keglar that um…somebody released, too. Yup yup.
I'm guessing Lewis just barely met the Texans DT Weight Limit, right?

If we had a defensive scheme
these guys look like they’d fit right in.

He might be better than Okoye
So he could stay in with Okoye & Cody rotating out

Whoa there
Better than Okoye? Next thing you know…Tim will rain hellfire on you for that statement.

Which is why I including the words "might be"
Gives me room for leeway out of that statement

Keglar from Purdue, Lewis from Miami
Seems like we’re keeping up with an old pipeline & starting to add a new one
I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.
Quick search on Keglar led me to his draft profile from somewhere
Athletic, should help on special teams. Has physical tools, but play making on field never matched up with expectations. Solid but unspectacular was how he was described.

I heard Brian Cushing like to do it with girls in a really uncomfortable place and i am not talking about the back seat of a Volkswagen
Go Texans!
DT Malcolm Sheppard has been activated from the PS
DE Tim Jamison signed to the PS.
"Lord, beer me strength."
And for those who wanna read about Sheppard....
Seems people were surprised he wasn’t drafted out of Arkansas.
If you’re a person who likes signs (not to overhype the kid): Productive SEC player. Injury leads to undrafted status. Texans sign to the PS. Injuries give him a crack at the big time……..hmmmmm, sounds familiar.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Undersized for a DT
Sounds like he’ll fit in just fine

22 sacks in 9 years...sweet! This guy should fit right in.

unreasonable expectations?
The leading DT in sacks last year was Babineaux with 6. That almost doubled his career high of 3.5. Making a snap decision about a DT based on sack numbers is silly. I know next to nothing about Lewis, and the fact that he’s available means we probably shouldn’t expect much. That being said he’s had a couple of decent season sack wise for a DT. If he can push the pocket and hold up against the run is more important than sack numbers though.

D. Lewis
was pretty generic/mediocre from what I saw of him while I lived in St. Louis. I know Rams fans were not the least bit sad to see him go.

I know nothing about him
Other than that rare diamond in the rough, most players available right now are going to be nothing more than average at best. Being saddened because a DT you picked up off the street mid-season doesn’t have a lot of sacks just doesn’t make sense to me. I think TF was probably being at least a little sarcastic, but I still think people get a little to upset/excited about these end of the roster moves. You just can’t expect much.

I was trying to imply that his mediocrity should fit right in with the rest of the defense right now...

he should fit right in from that standpoint
but sack numbers are a poor example to use as proof of mediocrity from the DT IMO.

One of these guys has to hit
we have like 7 new DLs since the beginning of the season.

Who is making room for Sheppard
Have we already moved Demeco to IR?
Assmass alone does not a NT make.
Sheppard has explosiveness off the line. Something we need.

I was gonna ask about this guy.
I don’t even remember us picking him up. Did we draft him?
Just my $.02
Even duct tape can't fix stupid
The only people who don’t think Cushing at MLB is the best solution are the people who list Ryans as a top MLB and call him a playmaker.
I think Cushing excels at this job in ways Ryans could never have imagined and might possibly keep it. Ryans could replace Diles at WLB when the team sees the field again in 2012, and we can sign/trade for/draft a replacement SLB in the next two offseasons.
Thats retarded
"Progress isn't made by early risers. It's made by lazy men trying to find easier ways to do something." -Robert Heinlein
http://www.accessorizeyourvehicle.com/
No it's not.
Cushing is better than Ryans at everything. Just like Ryans has been replaced as emotional leader of this defense by Pollard, he’s about to be replaced altogether at MLB by Cushing.
If you honestly watch these two men on the field and think Ryans is better than Cushing, you’re lying to yourself and ought not to go airing your opinions about things obviously far beyond your grasp. Ryans has never, nor will he ever, be able to do what Cushing has, can, and will. Cushing beats Ryans in coverage, in blitzing, and in making plays against the run behind the line of scrimmage. I’ve been saying it for two years now. Ryans is the most overrated defender in the league.
Cushing is better a SLB
because he is a playmaker, and can do more from the SLB position. Ryans is a solid dependable player, which is why I like him in the middle. Moving Ryans to wlb makes no sense because he isn’t great in coverage. I just think you are negating both Ryans AND Cushings strenths in your plan.

Again, irrelevant.
Although I should point out that, with all of the hype that Cushing received last year (well-deserved), DeMeco still made more stuffs/TFLs (11-8), even while playing on a bum knee for the last few games of the season.
DeMeco is an absolutely perfect fit at MLB for us, as is Cushing at SLB. Why you’d want to change that dynamic is beyond me.
wow...
I’m frankly a little uncomfortable with pitting these two AGAINST each other in order to make a point… It’s one thing to argue about a marginal player’s relative worth, but I think both of these guys deserve more respect than this.
We’re lucky to have BOTH of them and very lucky to have a player of Cushing’s caliber to step in for Ryans.
But let’s not just lose our minds in dismissing what Ryans brings to this defense and throw him under the bus.
“…people who list Ryans as a top MLB and call him a playmaker.”Interesting… so what are the facts that you would use to support your position that Ryans is NOT a playmaker?
Cushing is NOT better than Ryans at everything.
He may have some additional athletic gifts, but it would be pretty silly to assume that Cushing can read offenses at the same level and with the same perspective as Ryans after a single season in the league. I expect him to do a good job and possibly leverage some of his gifts to make up for other shortcomings.
I define playmaker as someone who "makes plays."
Accruing enormous tackle numbers is not a playmaker. Making plays behind the line of scrimmage, getting sacks, covering, defending passes, and getting interceptions are all things that count as plays that are made defensively in my book. Interestingly, DeMeco doesn’t do any of those things, and why I’d want to play Cushing in the middle over Ryans is the same reason I’d have wanted to play prime Brian Urlacher in the middle over prime Zach Thomas.
Now you're fiddling with semantics...
…and if the name of the game is defense, then making a tackle is indeed making a play.
DeMeco doesn’t do any of those thingsOkay… thanks for clearing things up for me… I won’t waste anymore time on this one.
Go Texans.
Agree/Disagree
Cushing is a better player than Ryans, but Cushing’s best-suited as the SLB. Really, they do work well off each other.
"Lord, beer me strength."
Wrong.
Perhaps it’s because, while there are certainly leadership requirements that go with MLB, Cushing has more play-making ability from the strong-side. He’s an excellent blitzer, and he is absolutely necessary to blow up blockers on strong-side runs.
I have no doubt in my mind that he’ll play well at MLB. The guy is just a football player; hell, he’d probably be a good DE for us as well. But I just happen to think this defense would be better off moving Diles to MLB, leaving Cushing where he is, and letting Sharpton play WLB. Obviously, the coaches disagree. I truly hope Bentley can play, because if not, plan on seeing a lot more days like last weekend when KC gashed us for 200+ on the ground. This team needs stellar play from its linebackers, because you can be damn sure nobody in that secondary is gonna tackle Chris Johnson or MJD.
