Around SBN: Ray Allen Fighting Age, Injury And His New Role

Per ESPN's Paul Kuharsky, there are reports that Titans CB Cortland Finnegan said, "Watch this" to the Houston bench on the play before Andre Johnson smacked him around for throwing his hands at Johnson's face mask.

I know no one is surprised that Finnegan instigated, but there's further proof.

Fisher's attitude afterward and comments at the presser should be enough for the NFL

To suspend Fisher for promoting thIs crap. His attitude is to “let the front office handle it”’ is blatent lack of leadership. How about coaches get their organization under control and not dump garbage like this on NFL fields and the front office?!!!

If I was comish for a week, I would suspend Fisher for 1 game and fine him $100K for ignoring this issue for years, if not down right promoting it. I’d suspend Finnegan for 4 games and fine him $100K for a 4th game with this type of issue. Then I’d staple a warning of permanent league suspension for any more fighting or dirty infractions. I’d fine Andre $75K (one for each landed haymaker) for being a first time offender. I’d also fine the refs $5,000 each for allowing the on field issue to develop to that level. By ignoring the issue the plays earlier, they left Andre no choice but to take matters into his own hands to beat down that filthy cheap punk who should be swimming with the fishes tonight.

After things had cooled down fish was still near the middle of the field barking while the refs were trying to get play going.

Rec'd

because I’ve believed for a long time that the real problem w/ that dirty leprechaun Finnegan is that the Titans’ coaching staff (starting and ending w/ Fisher) didn’t nip this in the bud to begin with. His claims that they don’t coach this are lame, at best. The head coach is responsible for the attitude and integrity with which his players conduct themselves. It is now obvious where Jeff Fisher’s team gets its “dirty play” mentality.

Fisher's strategy in that game has me reconsidering him as a head coach here.

The Texans were putting 9-10 in the box every play, and he only let Rusty throw one deep ball the whole game. I know it was a shitty throw, and I know that’s not what the BESF’s are good at, but if you’re trailing 17-0, you should at least playcall like you’re TRYING to win.

by riversmccown on Nov 29, 2010 5:09 AM CST up reply actions

just playing devil's advocate here.....

Just maybe he wasn’t trying to win. Consider for a second that Fisher may be so tired of this hillbilly shit that he’s pulling a Chilly, and using the circumstances to get himself canned.

Not likely, but still possible. Just sayin

Not sure if that is right, but I doubt he would make a conscious effort to lose. He can always just resign.

Last week I was one of the crowd thinking Fisher would be good to have in Houston

then after seeing his stats as a coach, and now remembering that he encourages dirty play, I have no appetite for him to come to Houston.

I’ll stay behind Kubiak until the season is over and weigh in opinion then. I still think the defensive coaching needs something more, and all the coaches should be somewhat hammered in review for taking a ten game experiment to find a working formula (that’s what pre-season is for).

How could some one on the Titans coaching staff not know what Finnigan was up to? what

Bad thing was I had to tell my six yr old that what AJ did was wrong and that he should not Have acted that way. AJ is our fav player but I couldn’t have condoned what happened and have my boy think it’s okay to act that way…I did send him out the room and say to my wife,“Andre whooped that ass!!!!!”

by BleedBattleRed on Nov 28, 2010 8:09 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Fisher cheered and patted Finnegan on the head several times afterward.

Many of the Titan players were taunting us fans at the stadium for about five minutes after the big brawl was broken up. There should have been additional penalties for their rude gestures and additional behavior while refs were sorting through the mess. Fisher and Finnegan should both be kneeling at the front office for this crap. We had a lot to explain to our kids about all of it when both benches emptied and the Titans acted that way without their coaches doing anything.

I feel bad that we (fans in attendance) cost the Texans a time out as we were screaming so loud for Finnegan to get off the field. Andre had long left for the locker room but Finn stayed on the sideline after being ejected as well. That jerk should get removed from the NFL.

Most games it's pretty quiet on offense actually

But we blew the lid today until Finn was finally in the tunnel. Amazing the refs didn’t enforce his removal before starting the play clock. He refs own a piece of this fight due to their lack of early enforcement on bad behavior, and the cleanup afterward.

my recollection of Bud Adams was that he was a spoiled brat

He’d go and demand that we build him a new stadium or else.
The city of Houston basically said “we’ll take your ‘or else’ . Now go away.”

He was frivolous in the way that he ran the team (I never knew what a GM did for a team until Rick Smith for the Texans — for me this is not only indicative of my football ignorance but it’s also indicative of Bud Adams acting as if he were GM. I CAN see his point, he IS the owner of the team).

As soon as Bud was gone as a Houston team owner, it seemed like Houstonians came out of hiding from Buds constant barrage of BS and we pulled together and got the resources to build our football stadium (now known as Reliant Stadium). It was great. The building of Reliant stadium was like the entire city of Houston popping the bird to Bud Adams.

Regardless of how bad our Houston football teams have been, historically, we DO know football in Houston and we knew all too well how much and how often Bud Adams shovelled BS at us and popped the bird to his fans before we EVER rejected his plea to build a stadium.

Sorry y’all have to deal with that idiot. I’m sure he always felt like Houstonians should have been more grateful to him for bringing us the Oilers. But we’d finally gotten fed up and decided that as abusive as this relationship was, we, Houstonians, could do better.

This is why we’re always so thankful for Bob McNair. To me, he really did bring football back to Houston. He got the group together to make a stadium happen, did what it took to kiss up to the NFL so we could get a new franchise here. The man (McNair) is awesome.

by BattleRedFan on Nov 29, 2010 1:18 AM CST up reply actions

Building Reliant was the biggest possible FU we could have given Adams.

Of course, his demand was for more stuff done to the dome – much cheaper than what we actually did by building a new facility. Still, we got rid of Adams and then built a shiny new stadium. That’ll always be a favorite memory.

Hmm, NBC post-game....

The suspension talk centers on Finnegan, not Johnson. Fine talk is on both.

Will be interesting to see what NFL does.

Pretty funny to hear all of the announcers supporting 'dre.

If you listen to the game highlights on nfl.com, whoever is commentating on it says something like, “I don’t know why Finnegan is smiling when he just got his—”… then it cuts out, but he was clearly about to say “ass handed to him”.

Anywho, tomorrow will be intriguing indeed. What he did was completely awesome, and completely necessary. But rules is rules. Throwing punches… I just don’t know how the league is going to see past that. A suspension would not surprise me, nor would it strike me as overly harsh.

However, all of the crap coming from Fisher about Finnegan keeping his cool? No way. He threw the first punch, he just missed. Should be a game and a fine for each of them. And they’ll both be back for the next match-up, in which Andre will go off for a 150+ yard performance like he’d done two of the last three games before this match-up.

10 bucks finnegan gets suspended for more than 1 game.

No way the league wants both of these guys on the feild together at the same time so soon.

really, if Finnegan gets suspended, its a loss for the division.

he is very over rated, he knows he sucks, and the only reason he is such a cock-licking cum-dumpster is too piss off wide receivers, as much as i would love to see him out of the league, id much rather him be out there getting burnt every other play, cause watching the BESFs get beat, makes my day worth waking up for. im sure his backup isnt great, but its got to be better than him, hell, im 21, i dont work out, im skinnier than a rail, and i can probably cover better and get more tackles than Cortland.

Some people say "If you can't beat them, join them". I say "If you can't beat them, beat them", because they will be expecting you to join them, so you will have the element of surprise.

Titans fans defending Finnegan...

If a man is offered a fact which goes against his instincts, he will scrutinize it closely, and unless the evidence is overwhelming, he will refuse to believe it. If, on the other hand, he is offered something which affords a reason for acting in accordance to his instincts, he will accept it even on the slightest evidence. The origin of myths is explained in this way.

Even if you were a Titans fan...

considering his Finnegan’s history and seeing as how he directly went to Johnson’s head at the snap, I don’t see how anyone could defend this guy. AJ is right that he should have kept his cool, but sometimes you have to defend yourself. Texans already have a “soft” image, and apparently Finnegan and AJ have been going at it for quite some time.

It's just funny

how so many of them point to the physicality of the previous plays and the lack of action by the refs as what was responsible for this, and completely ignore Finnegan’s history. Completely ignore it. Most recent comment on the Tennessean link a few spots up:

“This play started with a legal hit by Cortland who then had his helment ripped off (illegal),Cortand responded in kind and ripped the bullies helment and threw it down field in response to the bully. …”

Seriously, it’s fucking hilarious.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher said Finnegan never threw a punch.

“It’s not good for the game, no,‘’ Fisher said. "You don’t want to see that stuff. You don’t want to see a player slug another like that. But I am pretty confused as to why they said both threw punches. Cortland said he never took a swing."

Andre is getting mad cred in the media today

Everything I’m watching this morning indicates that the NFL community has Andre’s back on this. Nobody seems to think he should get suspended, but whether or not that has any sway in the decision remains to be seen. Either way it was a long time coming and well worth seeing imo.

As much as it would suck to lose him for a game, how awesome would it be to use this as a battle cry and beat the Eagles without him? Not likely, but after what I’ve seen in the last 24 hrs you never know.

I'll be surprised if AJ doesn't get suspended

I don’t think he should but there’s no way the Ginger hammer lets him off without at least a 1 game suspension after throwing that many punches, and the visibility this got on a nationwide level. I wish the Commish would look at the whole game (and Innegan’s whole career) to see how many times he went to Dre’s face, the little shoves after the play is over, etc. I’m sure he will… but I don’t think AJ gets away with only a fine.

That sounds like exactly what it is, actually.

McClain clearly wants to be the first to announce whatever happens, so he’s got one prepared in either scenario.

Of course, he’s not prepared for the real likely outcome in which Andre Johnson is lauded for his heroic actions and named president of Earthtopia; a futuristic society in which there is no war, poverty, or dropped passes.

But even i can tire of Finnegan being an idiot. At least he used to back it up with decent play, but this year he’s been a pile of suck (just like our coaches, our O-line, our linebackers in pass coverage, etc.).

That being said, you guys are also being homers when you hold Andre Johnson up to a saintly standard with his role in this. He should absolutely be held just as accountable because in the end, he threw the haymakers when he was kicking Finnegan’s ass.

I know this will probably get trolled in reply, but i thought I would try a logical statement.

You are correct that Dre' strayed incredibly far from his normal demeaner

and was accountable for his behavior, and even remorseful afterward. You have to understand this guy NEVER blows his cool. The entire league knows how humble and reserved he is despite huge losses, and other stress that usually cause outbursts for a common mortal. Dre’ never lets his emotions get the best of him in all previous experiences. THAT is why everyone including fans, teammates, coaches, other NFL players, NFL commentators (people like Tony Dungy, Jimmy Johnson, Shannon Sharpe, etc) all rallied to support him and disbelief that AJ could have snapped like this. It really shows how much Innegan pushed him over the edge.

Trash like Innegan, Fisher, and Cecil need to be removed from the league. That would greatly improve your team as well.

Find me one other instance where Dre has done anything improper with any other player.

Just one. I don’t think you’ll find any.

Because Andre has only ever gotten into it with Innegan. A player who is acknowledged by his peers as one of the cheapest in the game, and who has already been warned three other times for his cheap play (iirc).

How many times has Dre been warned for cheap play?

You and August have both come in here and insinuated (or outright said) that Dre is no saint. But you have yet to corroborate this with one shred of evidence, other than the last time Innegan and Dre got into it.

So to say that “his reaction is all Finnegan[sic] and that its a complete anomaly is false” is baseless and without any supporting evidence whatsoever. Innegan is a known cheap, dirty player. Andre Johnson is not.

And, like I asked August (who hasn’t gotten around to replying yet): would you be anything other than thrilled to death to have Dre on your team?

There will be consequences for Dre and no one is denying that there should be. But take off the blinders, man.

I find this logic specious for a couple of reasons

First, you’d be asking for AJ to just lay back and take it. In a physical sport like football, that’d be a relative death sentence. You didn’t have to live with David Carr and his known propensity to assume the fetal position at all possible times.

Secondly, and I’ll use myself as an example here, as somebody who tries to be a pacifist, if somebody attacked me? Even with my demeanor, there’s no way in hell I would be able to take it. I would fight back every time.

Honestly, we can’t expect football players to be Gandhi on the field.

Again, specious argument

Completely lacks logic. Just above, you said that AJ wasn’t supposed to take it, but two hands to the face mask after the snap, AFTER telling the Texans’ bench to “Watch this,” doing anything else but fighting back would be laying back and taking it Clayton Williams style.

B.S.

It was not a premeditated act to rip his helmet off. The very first thing that happens when two football players go at it is yanking on each other’s face masks. That’s what happened and the helmets subsequently came off in the process.

After that it was a target of opportunity. As Maverick would say…..“I saw the shot, there was no danger, so I took it.”

You act like this was a planned attack, when in reality it was a simple fist fight in response to a lot of provocation.

Andre reacted to violence with violence.

Seymour reacted to shit-talking (most likely) with violence. Different situations, really.

I keep hearing that “Finnegan won”, though, because he got into Andre’s head. I completely disagree. Ignoring the fact that the Texans steamrolled the Titans, and that it happened when the game was already over, this sets a precedent for the next game. The league is going to be watching that match-up closely next time they play, and we’ll see just what type of player Finnegan is when he can’t get away with cheap-shots.

Everyone has a breaking point.

At the end of a four-game losing streak and three and a half quarters of being cheap-shotted every time the refs weren’t looking, he’s not gonna take it any more.

He could have done the same to Finnegan; little cheap-shots on every play that go unnoticed. But he decided instead to settle it abruptly. It doesn’t strike me as any more or less dirty; he just did it in a way that sure as hell aught to fire up the rest of his team.

Johnson didn’t start it, he just finished it.
Finnegan started the fight because he just…can’t…play.
Not only did he start it, but it was a completely premeditated fight. Finnegan planned to do it.

I’ll say it again, this is Johnson’s “fool me once, shame on you.” Because he fell for Finnegan’s bullshit. He won’t be so lucky with “fool me twice, shame on me.”

If he does start up again, then the Texans need to resign Frank Okam. He won’t see a down of playing time, but if Finnegan starts up again, then we just send Frank out to KTFO of Finnegan and sit on his head for the rest of the game.

Haynesworth, Vandenbosch, and plenty of other Titans have had the dirty Rep in the past

It’s been that way for most of Fisher’s tenure, and it’s not just Texans fans that feel that way. Dre obviouysly shouldn’t have thrown haymakers. I’m sure he will be punished. Finnegan was taking little cheap shots all day. Hands to the face/throat when he went to jam all day(like what finally set everything off). I was there and watched it all day and was screaming for the refs to do something after seeing AJ get yanked by the facemask way more than just incidental. Shoves after the whistle. Hell there were even reports that he was taunting AJ’s family when he got off the team bus before the game. He said “watch this” before the play the fight broke out on. What was intention? I have no idea, but it sure looks like he was trying to start something.

AJ’s had two issues in the NFL. Both of them involved Finnegan. Finnegan has already had three other incidents in just this season with MANY more through his whole career. It’s not so much that Dre wasn’t in the wrong for reacting the way he did, but that so many other players and fanbases outside of Tenn. know that Finnegan deserved everything he got and more. If past record is factored in then it’s impossible to make an argument that Dre doesn’t have the better record.

The Titans celebrated and taunted the fans while being down 17-0 because they managed to get rid of our best player while Fisher delayed the game five minutes because of his whining that they didn’t do anything wrong.

There's tons of stories that insinuate dirty play by KVB

Accusations of twisting ankles of players with a known ankle injury at the bottom of the pile vs the jets. Accusations of trying to taking out QB’s knees. I found one story where Gus Ferrote accused him of purposely trying to spear him in the junk. None of them are conclusive proof that he’s dirty, and I only really remember a couple of iffy shots at Schaub’s knees personally (which I’m probably biased on). I also seem to remember him threatening to “take out” Joel Dreesen. I think you would find outside of Tenn. KVB’s rep often had the dirty rep. Tenn. in general has that reputation. This was from 2009, but three Titans made the list for the top 15 dirtiest players in the league based on votes from actual NFL players. Whether it’s true/fair or not, the Titans rep in general is that they are a dirty team and has been for years.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/11/04/dirty/index.html

Just to be fair…plenty of teams complain about our O-Line, and specifically Winston (Winston and KVB were good for 3-4 shoving matches a game). Most of that relates to the fact that we cut blcok, which is completely legal, but understandably hated by all D-lineman. We’ve been called for a few illegal chop blocks since we started running the zone….but not enough IMO to show a pattern that they are being coached that way.

Let's talk about the head coach then

and his appetite for this crap. He was laughing at Rodney Harrison after the Titans destroyed his knee.

You won’t win any debates trying to paste this situation on AJ. Finnegan is a dirt bag who aspires to be known as such, and wants to be voted the cheapest player in the NFL by his peers. He has the wrong concept of professional athletics and should be banned from the NFL. Stop trying to shift any of his bad attitude and bad behavior on AJ. The good guy had enough of the bad guy’s cheap shots and mouth, and he shit stomped the bad guy into the ground. Get over it and GTFO if you can’t take the truth.

Feel free to stick around if you want to trade entertainment posts or common sense discussions, but stop trying to turn the story the other way when everyone except “dool cups” from Methopotamia know the truth about who these two players are and what happened.

Coaches are supposed to lead and manage the personnel

and as such are held to a higher standard.

He sets the example, and if that example is “dirty play” acceptance, then it permeates and festers through the team. Cecil is also historically one of the dirtiest players who ever walked an NFL field. Fisher came from the coaching tree of Buddy Ryan who not only promoted cheap shots, he even hit one of his own coaches (Kevin Gilbride).

Innegan would probably be a dirty player no matter where he landed, but he happens to fester on a team where the coaches have a history and appetite for applauding such behavior. I was at the game and saw Fisher cheer (fists in the air, jumping up off the ground) and then patting Innegan on the head and back afterward.

Because of their respective histories

If I were the Texans, I would present as evidence the following:

-Andre Johnson has never had any problems with any other player in the league
-Innegan had been putting hands on Dre’s face for several plays before the fight – confirmed by game footage
-Innegan has already had three warnings by the league this year
-Innegan’s peers consider him a cheap player
-Dre is a model citizen and was clearly provoked
-Dre understood immediately that what he did was wrong and owned up to it; Innegan has not

If I’m the BESFs, here’s what I say:
-Dre hit Innegan several times.
-Dre ripped Innegan’s facemask off and kinda pushed him in the back once on a running play
-Innegan isn’t bad, he’s just misunderstood (or something along those lines)

Then the league will decide. Personally I (and many other people here) wouldn’t be surprised if he gets suspended or not.

But if you look at the history and the player’s respective records, Dre comes out looking a lot cleaner.

Innegan’s lucky AJ realized he was in an NFL game and not standing 300 yards over on Kirby Drive with a pistol in his hand. He’s also luck he only got fisted three times instead of taking a few kicks to the face as well.

He struck AJ in the face several times in the game and on the play in question, and AJ applied responsive force to stop the persistent attack and end the encounter.

So Andre

Being smart enough to hit a guy’s head instead of the helmet makes him bad – how?

Hoping weird stuff really does only come in 3's

So if a bad guy comes up to me and tries to assault me

and he’s got a criminal record going back years and I have NO criminal record and am considered a very good person by standards of measurement by all who know me, and I successfully end the encounter by use of force (again after he already assaulted me with illegal use of force with a blow to the head), I would be as bad as him?

The little punk finally pushed someone to the breaking point and got what he had coming for years. It came uncharacteristically from a “nice guy” in the sport. The end! Nothing more to see here, everyone knows the truth about both player’s history and what went down.

Please go troll somewhere else.

You have been trying to shift the blame

from a known scumbag to a known good guy in a forum where the core subject supports the fans of the team the known good guy plays.

Nobody is saying AJ is innocent. Innegan needs to be disciplined on a far greater level for his consistent issues with this very behavior. AJ needs to be disciplined as a first time offender.

Feel better now? Done stirring the hornets or do you have more to say in your effort to defame a future hall of famer for something he did out of character thanks to a scumbag who’s coaches and the game’s officials failed to manage better?

very well said, MeMongo

I keep thinking of Kenny Rogers song “Coward of County”

I promised you, Dad
Not to do the things you’ve done
I walk away from trouble when I can
Now please don’t think I’m weak
I didn’t turn the other cheek
Papa, I sure hope you understand
Sometimes you gotta fight
When you’re a man

I just keep remembering that part . While most people don’t condone violence. Sometimes you do have to stand up for yourself because no one else will. I see it as Andre had to stand up for himself b/c the little thug, Finnegan, was just constantly badgering him with this garbage.

My opinion

I think both players should be suspened for the rematch since all of AJ’s unsaintly incidents can be isolted to this one defender. you get equal punishment since Innegan has a history and AJ took it too far. If my child did this sort of thing i would accept his punishment from the school but when we left the school i would take him for ice cream because he stood up for himself. That is what we are doing here we are giving AJ some love for doing what he SHOULD have done.

Texas. Gods favorite country.

I've actually heard that thrown about

Suspend both players for the rematch.

If they were to get suspended…I think that makes sense.

If they are going to suspend them both (which I think happens) that makes the most sense

It will probably help serve as a reminder to both sides to keep things cool in the rematch as well.

Sweet Justice!

Sounds like the NFL approached this based on history, character, and premeditated intent.

That’s why we have “grand jury” process in the courts for self defense incidents involving the use of force (including deadly force). Review the situation, mitigating circumstances, and body of work (history) concerning all facts and actors involved.

Good luck to you as well

I actually thought the Titans looked to be tops in the AFC this year early on (I thought it would be Titans vs Jets in AFC championship), but lots of issues to sort out for Tenn now it seems. It’s frustrating when there’s that much going on in the locker room and you guys have been through a lot over the years.

I may not agree with you on this incident or how much AJ should suffer for it, but I do welcome future engagements with you. No hard feelings, and I hope you guys get the team and excitement you expect as NFL fans.

No way!

This entire thing – from the ass whooping, to the idiotic Titans fans, to the show of support from everyone everywhere with an opinion on the NFL that sided with us – has been JUST. FUCKING. AWESOME.

This has made my whole week. I didn’t even mind working on a Monday after a long weekend.
