Better Know The Jacksonville Jaguars: Ask Big Cat Country

Hello Texans Fans,

For whatever reason, I tend to frequent this blog, so I guess introductions aren't necessary.  The Texans travel to Florida for a do or die game between two 4-4 teams. Or, if you want a more catchy name "The Dead Coach Walking" bowl. These games usually have one of the two fan bases wanting to find a nice steep ledge to jump off of afterward, so it should be fun. Any questions about the Jaguars, feel free to ask.

And since you're all a bunch of monkeys who find the Rec button irresistible, I don't think I'll need to ask you guys to rec this thread.

I believe in all but two games this year the pass defense has given up over 300 yards.

Dear God yes.

Don't worry

Schaub is back to his David Carr impersonations of throwing the ball just far enough to avoid getting a first down. Your safeties and set up a hammock and sip some ice tea.

That is unless Kubiak accidentally calls in a running play and Foster gets into the secondary. At that point you are screwed. But again, don’t worry, Kubiak is pushing the passing game despite all the forces in the universe and a flashing neon sign showing him that we have the best running team in the NFL.

Be sure to tell your DE’s that Schaub’s ribs are soft, warm and go great without any BBQ sauce.

I think

you’re a close second to the Chiefs very good run game. Even with no threat of the pass they dominate in the run game. And Jamal Charles is starting to look a lot like Chris Johnson did last year.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 9, 2010 3:24 PM CST up reply actions

My mistake

We have the best running back in the NFL (total yards, yards/game, touchdowns, first downs)

by MeMongo on Nov 9, 2010 5:40 PM CST up reply actions

Let's wait more

than a season before we start making those types of statements. Remember it wasn’t long ago that the Texans offense made Slaton look like one of the best in the league.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 10, 2010 2:06 AM CST up reply actions

my statement

is based on the existing stats at NFL.com, but we can wait 5 years before we say anything about performance. By then Buffalo and Dallas may have winning seasons again and most of the current RB’s will be retired.

Trust me, Slaton never looked like Foster. But it is also the entire unit running the ball very well this season. In all fairness (as a life long Bronco fan who doesn’t take comparisons lightly), the “appearance” on field is incredibly similar to the days of Terrell Davis. Foster is really special. I hope you get a chance to see it this week.

by MeMongo on Nov 10, 2010 9:29 AM CST up reply actions

What's going to happen to Slaton, I wonder?

I think he gets cut next year when Jeremiah Johnson comes back. Foster, Ward and Johnson. No room for Slaton. How the mighty have fallen….

I dub the jaguars..... untelevised!

by Rip Jersey on Nov 10, 2010 9:28 PM CST up reply actions

O I do like

Jeremiah Johnson. Personally I would get rid of Ward if Slaton can get over his injuries and fumbling issues.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 10, 2010 9:34 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah

Jeremiah showed some great stuff in preseason. Ward has been hitting some nice runs averaging almost 7 yards per carry. I think Slaton is just needing a new environment and a fresh start. His fumbles were the issue last season, but his mental challenges hurt him this year. He stepped out at the 1 yard line on a kick off return. He also just doesn’t allow blockers to develop and tends to rush right into their backs, and he struggles to get defenders to over pursue and cut back against them (the way Foster does).

I think next year is Foster, Tate, Ward with Jeremiah Johnson on practice squad unless Ward is just getting too old by then.

by MeMongo on Nov 11, 2010 12:19 AM CST up reply actions

But Ward

has been getting his yards in ways that wont come in the future. You’ll see what I mean in about 5 weeks or so.
As for Jeremiah, I was a fan of his since his college days. Seeing him in the preseason, I know, he’s got eve more to show you.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 11, 2010 12:59 AM CST up reply actions

Nail on the head - Slaton has no patience and doesn't let blocks develop

He’s had plenty of chances to watch Arian do it this year. Time after time Foster uses change of speed and/or direction to follow the blocks as they develop or elude would be tacklers. His combination of vision, balance, agility, speed and strength make him the complete back that he currently is. The ability to slow down and use peripheral vision is more gift than learned skill. I’m not sure that Slaton can learn to do it. He is a slasher. Even in his highly successful rookie season, he repeatedly ran up the backs of his blockers and many times was able to bounce off of them and find a hole. If he could only learn to slow down a half tick I think he could still be a productive player.

It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

Except in the last game Slaton got any carries

he actually looked a lot better to me. Then the coaches fell in love with ward and I think over the last 3 games Slaton has 0 carries.

LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!

by nolander on Nov 11, 2010 10:05 AM CST up reply actions

yeah I remember that game

and the last of those 3 carries, Slaton ran straight into the pile like he was doing last year. I don’t know if it’s him not seeing stuff with peripheral vision or if he needs to turn his neck before running.

It was great to see him seem like a great running back in those first 2 carries and disappointing to see him return to form by running straight for the pile - yet again. I figured maybe he got tired ;).

by BattleRedFan on Nov 11, 2010 2:27 PM CST up reply actions

Heard from people close to the team that he just didn’t have the smarts to be an effective safety. He got by on sheer athletic ability at UF, and couldn’t do that in the NFL. Certainly explains things.

What is the worst problem with your secondary?

I always thought Rashean Mathis and Derek Cox were okay. Is it safety play? Am I totally wrong about your corners?

by cubic on Nov 9, 2010 3:47 PM CST reply actions

Rashean

despite not having the numbers and despite the ridicule he’s had from the fan base has played ok. Derek Cox had a seriously rough start to the season and was benched. Since being reinstated as the starter he’s performed extremely well.
The main problem in our secondary is the horrible play from our safeties. We’ve been shuffling around due to injuries, roster changes, money, etc etc. We now have 2 young Safeties who are playing defense in the NFL for their first time.
The strong safety is coming around quicker. He’s actually looking like a good thumper in the run game and he has the athleticism needed in coverage.
Now at the FS position…. we still have a problem. I like the talent there. He’s fast, strong, athletic, smart, etc etc, but he’s a first year player and he’s a first year player making a position change from CB to FS. And the position change wasn’t made till about week 4. And he’s only started the last 2 games. But he’s already shown significant improvement.

He's played really well

significantly better than his more highly touted draft counterpart in Tampa, Gerald McCoy.
He’s played well against the run and he’s had pressure and a few sacks in the pass game. He plays a crapload of snaps. Best of all he’s improving. And the guy has a motor like you wouldn’t believe. I’m talking John Randle like. Not the player that he was, but definitely worth the draft pick.
Here’s a nice little sack from him.

LAST SEASON, I led this team in ninth-inning doubles in the month of August!

by nolander on Nov 10, 2010 10:25 PM CST up reply actions

He has been inconsistent

I thought he had a horrible game against the Chargers. Just wasn’t his day. As for the game against the Eagles he wasn’t given much of a chance to compete. His OL didn’t block well. The run game was erratic and stalling. The OC was calling a conservative passing offense against a defense that was obviously playing all the underneath routes. Against the Titans he was killed by his teammates with a lack of pass pro and his new receiver ran a wrong route that lead to a INT. He didn’t play in the loss against the Chiefs.
Still he’s somewhere in between the ratings he’s been getting.

by Ewdtrey on Nov 10, 2010 11:45 PM CST up reply actions

He should have all day to throw on us

we have no pass rush and no secondary. His only chance of screwing up is if he forgets to lick his fingers and lets one fly wild or if he tries to run.

The run

is actually pretty good by comparison to our pass D. Much better than the stats indicate. A lot of the yards we’ve given up are from when games were not in question. I would say they are a smidgen above average.
As we are now mostly a smaller speedier 1 gap penetrating DL, I think we are a little more built to stop the zone stretches than a “power” run game.
