Luv Ya Steel Blue: Being Bob McNair

Same result, different week and a couple days later than usual, Aaron and myself give our thoughts. We discuss everything from the latest trend of Matt Schaub criticism, rumors of Bill Cowher as the next head coach and dissecting what Texans owner Bob McNair must be thinking with his latest comments to the media.

All of this, plus a look around the league in the week that was Week 15 of the 2010 NFL Season.

Ohhhhhhhh!

Bill Cowher hate from Aaron. Aaron is losing his credibility. Keep talking Aaron and you might be able to dig yourself out….. but, not likely.

I'm leaning more towards either Ron Rivera or John Fox

Someone that can use our current defensive personnel, plug in a few other players & scheme something much better

What defensive players?

The plug and play approach is what we have seen for years now and that it does not work is rather obvious. Since we do have a pass happy team why not go after a June Jones or similar coach that can work with our offense and go after a defensive coach like Cowher; this way we can be the first team in the league with a two head coach system; and yes I know it would not work given egos involved!

You perked me up when you mentioned Bill Parcells coming in as perhaps a consultant

That idea intrigues me. Parcells is still tied-in with the Dolphins, but I think he can get his complete release in the blink of an eye. I wouldn’t mind seeing that guy come here to help set up the team coaching and draft strategy. I think the Texans atmosphere between the owner and management would be perfect for him. Could we throw some more names out there, either as a consultant or a general manager. I am not saying that Rick Smith has to go, but maybe. Are they any current Head Coaches out there that are ready for a GM position as the next step in their career? Someone like a Tom Coughlin, maybe? There, I threw a name out and opened myself for criticism….

Except for the fact he'd blow up the offense to bring in his people

Would he?

He seems more like the type to adjust to what he has. He designed a pretty good passing offense in Dallas, then realized he didn’t have a QB in Miami and went with the wild-cat. I think he’d be pretty content with this offense they way they’ve been running the ball.

Yes, I like the Patirots, too. They have an awesome offense

However, they will probably still have to go through the Steelers defense (Dick Labeau? The guy you gave all the credit to for Cowher’s success). The Patirot’s offense is very similar to their offense during their undefeated 2007 season and how did they do in the Super Bowl? Oh yes, they met up with a superior Giants defense and got spanked.

Spanked?

They lost by three points on a freak play. What’s more, New England had the 4th-ranked defense that year; the Giants were 17th. That game was an immensely strange upset/fluke, however you look at it.

This year, the Pats’ defense truly is shitty, however. In fact, they’re probably the closest defense in the league to matching our level of suckitude in nearly every category. And yet, there are two reasons that they’re a good team and we’re a shitty team: FS and SS INTs and passing plays of 40+ yards.

They’ve hauled in 20 INTs to our 10 (thanks largely to Devin McCourty). The most amazing stat though? We’ve given up 14 passing plays of 40+ yards. They’ve given up one. They have less sacks than us. Their run defense is worse than ours. They’re neck-and-neck with us on passing yards surrendered. But long-balls and turnovers… Just another reason I want Rick Smith drawn and quartered for completely ignoring the safety position. Because CBs and coordinators be damned, if you replaced Ewww and Pollard with Chung and Meriweather, I’ll bet you we’d be sitting pretty right now.

Alright, that’s my last pro-safety, anti-Rick Smith rant. At least, until they ignore it again in the next off-season and we wind up starting Barber and Nolan in 2011… Le sigh.

I kinda remember that Super Bowl, Giants-Pats

The Giants defense peaked at the right time…when the playoffs started and right on through to the Super Bowl. They pressured and harassed Brady like he hadn’t seen all through the undefeated season. You can throw out a season’s worth of stats if the team comes to play when it matters, so I wouldn’t dwell on what place in the rankings the Giants D was and where the Pats O was. On gameday, the Giants came to play. Yes, in the end, a gift play helped make the difference, but there was a games worth of plays the led up to that one play. Scoreboard, dude! And, no matter how good the Pats looked in the last two games, with one being a snowstorm, you can’t say that pace is going to continue right through to the Super Bowl. In fact, my money is on the Steelers D (thank you Dick Labeau) to take them to the Super Bowl over the Pats O.

Well

To be fair, the Patriots defense has also shown a lot of improvement since Week 7 or 8.

It’s almost like they had a bunch of young talent, and then someone coached it to be better then it already was. Wonder what that’s like.

This might upset the Squatters, but I agree that the Colts reign of dominance is done

We all agree on that. But, still, we are cheering on the Texans at 5 and 8, and who are we to talk.

Good show, guys! I enjoyed listening to you touching on other subjects that aren’t Texans, too.

Although...

Bill Cowher

You seem to be bagging him for not being a great coach. But state that he was only great because he surrounded himself with good assistants. Reminds me of Henry Ford. And if Kubiak could surround himself with some good assistants, we’d be a bit better.

But, i am still delusional and hope that Kubiak and Smith stay on, Shannahan Jr comes back as OC and Cowher comes onboard as Assistant Head Coach/Defensive co-ordinator. So I know I’m crazy, and that is the first step.

Just out of curiosity--

Why do you want baby Shanahan back?

by Nashmeister on Dec 18, 2010 6:09 PM CST up reply actions

Dennison under-utilises the long ball and over-utilises the roll out. Neither of them help Schaub

Dennison has worked wonders with the running game though. So I don’t really want him gone either.

It's a definite trade-off.

But I think if it comes down to having the league’s best passing game or running game, I’m gonna take the running game 9/10 times. And I think the biggest thing that Dennison has brought this year, is an ability to score against good defenses. We hung up some points on the Jets, Eagles, Ravens, and Chargers (although I think their defense is overrated). Whereas under Shanny with the pass-reliant offense, we got crushed by any team with a big NT. The Jekyll/Hide aspect isn’t ideal, but we went through that last year too, just failing in the second half instead of the first.

I’d sure like to have baby Shan back as QB/WR coach, but I’m really digging the crinkles that Dennison has added to the running game. He has that offensive line playing like one of the best in the league right now.

In fairness to all

Foster is only doing what he gave us an indication of in the few games he played in at the end of last season. Whoever was OC, they would have had to eff it up royally to have not been successful there. Not to take anything away from the O-line, but I would say the same about them. Arian Foster is a talent, plain and simple. I give him all the credit he can get.
