Where Have You Gone, Eric Winston?
A Texans Nation turns its glaring eyes to you (woo woo woo).
Eric Winston's lackluster play has come under the ire of Texans fans this year, but perhaps its not lackluster at all. Perhaps, even, it's been downright Bushian in its suckitude. Thanks to AOL Fanhouse, we have some lick of proof that Winston has been part of the problem this year, not part of the solution. In fact, that 2.5 seconds per sack allowed is incredibly scary, especially if you're Matt Schaub.
With Jumpin' Duane Brown anchoring the other end of the line, is it any wonder why teh Schaub has occasionally played like a frightened kitten this year? Brown, at least, is holding attackers at bay for an extra half second. However, the combination of Brown and Winston is right up there with the Cardinals and Bears for horrific tackle tandems in the NFL in terms of pass protection.
As we flounder to the off-season, we need to make sure we add a new position to the top of our wish list: offensive tackle.

I'm hoping it's merely an off year for Winston.
The penalties and suck are not what anyone comes to expect from him.
With Rashad Butler being a free agent, OT has been somewhat of a need. I dunno how they’ll address, but they will need to in some way, shape or form.

i agree. all the talk of skill position needs and everything doesn’t make much sense when we dont even have a line to block for said skill positions. most important positions in the NFL in my opinion. both sides of the ball

It's all the time at 610.
He is always on there just casual ladi freaking da. The old Eric Winston is gone. Got the fat contract, forgot he had it for a year, then remembered and went soft. It’s just easier and requires less work and effort.
He can turn it around though, guy can play

Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't appreciate his candor on "The Right Stuff"
I commented about this on a thread a few weeks back, but when he is asked about his poor play, his response is typically something along the lines of, “Well the guys we’re going up against are getting paid too.”
No sense of personal or professional accountability, no fire, and a general complacency characterize this team. That’s on Kubes.

One word answer: Hooters.
Every single time I turn on the radio, I hear, “hey! You’re listening to Sports 610. We’re here at Hooters with Eric Winston!”.
Literally all the time. I’ll think, “Wait a minute… it’s 11:45 on a Sunday. Doesn’t he have a game in half an hour? And aren’t they playing in Jacksonville this week?”.
If you would have told me that our interior line would be good this year, while our tackles played like junk, I’d have said you were crazy. Weird season, innit?
Yeah, weird
All of a sudden we have one of the best running games in the NFL, & Schaub is getting punished anyways

He's been like amazing in run blocking though, right?
I’m not sure but he has. So out of our offensive line Chris Myers is the best one this year? Because someone from that line should go to the pro-bowl in my opinion.

He's been very good.
0 sacks given up, only 1 penalty, and he’s part of the success of the league’s leading rusher.

On Pro football focus' grading system Winston has had four bad games
The Tenn. game was atrocious.Outside of the four bad games he’s been good on their grading system. Cumulative score is +1.5.
Wade Smith has a better cumulative score for the year (+4.4) with three bad games. His worst game rating was only about half as bad as Winston’s…that pretty much accounts in the difference for the difference in their cumulative grade.
For run blocking Winston is +1.1. Wade Smith is actually -5.7 (the Jets game really hurt his run blcok grade).
In the 2010 football outsiders almanac they said this about Winston, “The
Texans’ best lineman is Winston, who has started every game for three straight seasons and is one of the more
underrated players in the league. He put up the tackle’s version of a perfect season: 16 starts, zero penalties, zero
blown blocks. The Texans were also much better running to his side than to the left.”
Winston has obviously struggled at times this year, but I think it would be a bad idea to give up on him. Considering how little experience Brown had as a LT coming out of college and his age, I am perfectly comfortable with our Tackles going forward….especially considering how many huge holes are on the defensive side of the ball. FS, SS, WLB, MLB (if Demeco can’t regain his form), and of course our inexperienced corners. To me all of those areas would be much higher priority than OT right now. If we can improve any area of the team that’s great…but Winston and the rest of the line isn’t a huge concern for me right now. (3rd in run blocking and middle of the pack pass blocking according to Pro football outsiders).

Myers has been surprisingly good.
Baltimore will be a test, but one game doesn’t discount a great season.
I think it goes to show how detrimental nagging injuries can be. Myers played all of last year with a high ankle sprain, meanwhile he had back-ups playing next to him at both guard positions. This year is a different story. Dennison has helped, surely. But the guys up front are doing a damn-fine job.
I was on mile high report
(broncos sb) and since mcdaniels is gone, some of them wanted kubiak as their head coach. Thing is, I don’t see kubs being fired unless we lose the next 4

I'm remebering, back to the Washington game
A couple of sacks game with blitzes to #73 side. Someone would blitz inside, then bounce around the end. The Guard hands off the blitzer and the end up double teaming the Lineman and the blitzer blows by Winston for a sack. So, maybe having a change of Guard inside has contributed?

Okay, bfd, I see there is one person I don't have to convince during this offseason
The Texans need to draft an OT…..maybe two! Both OTs have proven they are not athletic enough to cover any mediocre DE, let alone the elite DEs, and there are many. This is a glaring weakness in this team.
However, that being said, I actually may back off from my previous stance that they need an OT in the first round. I am thinking as bad as the Texans OTs are, the DTs are much worse. Okoye and Cody are not DT starter quality, plain and simple. This weakness has cost the team games this season, week in and week out. The D can’t stop anyone. Average players have career days against the Texans. If I had to pick the one biggest reason why, I have to say it is the DT play. They literally suck. One or two good plays does not cause me to forget the volume of bad plays. I expect your next feature on position players to be the DTs. Thank you very much in advance.

I wonder if Brown might be able to slide to RT?
But Brown, I think has been far better than Winston so far this year.

Uh…this team has a top 5 offense and the league’s worst defense. I’m going to go out on a limb and say Eric Winston is not the problem with the team this year.
In fact, in this case, I’m going to actually trust the guys who built the top 5 offense over random blogger.
Now if we want to talk about something, let’s talk about defense, where this coaching staff and management has proven they can’t build anything but terrible.
What a genius argument

The offense is 11th in scoring...
Winston certainly ain’t the problem with this team, but between injuries and losing players in free agency, I still think you aught to draft a versatile O-lineman every year within the first three rounds. If you’re not getting better in this league, you’re getting worse.
I agree with the draft an O-lineman early every year argument
…but you could make the same case for defensive lineman and corners as well so it’s not that easy in practice.
"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair
O-linemen are low-risk, and you can find good value in say, the 3rd-round.
Also, I think the Texans do a pretty good job of developing/coaching them. D-linemen and corners, on the other hand, aren’t such a safe bet. DTs have a steep learning curve, and with the rule changes that benefit receivers it’s getting tougher and tougher to find competent CBs. Molden, Bennett and Quin (albeit fourth-rounders), Kareem… It’s a bit of a crap-shoot.
Really?
I know we’re mainly talking pass protection here, and I agree that his performance has been sub par this season, but generalizing that he “sucks” is a little much dontcha think?
Considering we have the NFL’s leading rusher this late into the season means Winston has to be doing something right.
Not trying to be an apologist, but I’m not willing to go so far as to say he’s terrible just yet. He definitely needs to work on his pass block technique in the offseason though.

I'm a man!! I'm forty!!
Understood
But, fact is, he’s one of the worst OTs at giving up sacks this year with a terribly fast time AND he’s only one of two RTs in the Top Ten. We’re also far more effective at running the ball to the left instead of the right.
Also, to me, there’s more a trickle down effect than just giving up sacks. We’ve talked all year about how Schaub looks a little more shaky when throwing. Is that because he’s being pressured more? Or because he’s being hit more? Is it internal, only?
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

"Blind fandom is all I got left." - LoneSpot
You also have to recognize the possibility that Dennison's tweaks to the offense have lowered Schaub's comfort factor
He made some improvements to the run game (I’ve seen more pulling from the Texans this year) so it’s reasonable that he tweaked the passing game to. Maybe Schaub just hasn’t adjusted to the changes. I have no idea, but I think it’s at least plausible.
The sack numbers are way too high, and 2.5 seconds is not ideal, but I think a couple of really bad beats by Winston are sticking out in peoples mind and making it look worse than it really is (like ragdoll a couple of years ago). They list QB/play call for only one less sack than Winston is responsible for. Schaub reads the play better and gets rid of the ball a little quicker and Winston cleans up a few things (we know he’s capable he’s done it before) and things don’t look that bad.
"Well, at least our players kept their helmets on, so that showed some intelligence"-Bob McNair
True
But 6th in the league is pretty atrocious by any standard.
Not saying it’s time to give up on him. Heck, didn’t we learn the hard way about tossing a rookie OT into the starting lineup? But players do digress, and Butler isn’t the long-term answer, either. Seeing he’s also playing his age 27 season and struggling gives me further pause.
You’re right above, though, that this team has a huge number of holes to be filled. I do think that OT needs to be a top priority, though.
A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.

I think after Carr I might be a little to quick to blame the QB but...
Kubiak’s reason for not having many audibles is that they have “safeties” built into almost every play so there’s no reason to audible out of play because no matter what the defense does there should be a bulit in counter. I’m not down on Schaub, I just don’t think he, or the team in general, are as in sink on the passing game. It’ just doesn’t flow like is did last year. I really don’t think the pass protection in general has been much worse than last year just on the eyeball test, but Schaub hasn’t done as good of a job of dumping it off quickly under pressure. If Winston doesn’t have that horrid game against the Titans I doubt we are even talking about it.

He was really bad against the Giants, too

Love from NYT's Fifth Down Blog for Duane Brown
Duane Brown isn’t a household name, despite being a first-round pick in 2008 and paving the way for the leading rusher in the N.F.L. this season. Arian Foster leads the league in rushing yards, rushing touchdowns, yards from scrimmage and total touchdowns, heights he couldn’t have reached without Brown. Pro Football Focus ranks Brown as the third-best rush blocking left tackle in the league in 2010. Foster’s worst game of the season — a 25-yard effort on 11 carries — came while Brown was serving a suspension for violating the league’s policy on banned substances.
