Maybe the real answer to the Houston Texans' 1st round draft is...
To not draft in the first round at all? I think we all agree that there are a few names that really stand out if they were available at the 20th pick. Then there appear to be some names that everyone says "well they might be a little high at this selection, but they are the best available". Then of course there are even more names that we are "if they are available by the 2nd round, they're a steal!". I think with that in mind, the Texans should consider trading down to the end of the first or upper 2nd round (with an additional 3rd or 4th round pick) if one of the three or so big board names aren't there by our turn in the 1st. The reality is also that it is all contingent on finding someone interested, however, you can't tell me guys at the bottom of the first/top of the second don't have specific guys targeted.
Clearly, the Texans are on the edge of something big. Power runner and secondary are the big keys to this draft along with some defensive/offensive line depth. Having some extra picks to be able to fill those spots especially in a draft where it looks like more quality exists more in rounds 2-4. Two other positions that most would assume are strengths also need to be in the back of war room minds in Houston: WR and LB. Walters is winding down his contract & Andre Davis is year-to-year so our apparent depth at that position could become shallow fast. Moreover, I still think we should keep our minds open in the second round if a LB happens to fall into that round especially if we have additional picks. It goes without saying that Cushing had a great year as a rookie. However, you would have to blind not to also see that some of the injuries that plagued him in college are already starting to creep up in his first NFL year. In addition, you have Ryans waiting for someone to show him the money when his contract is up which of course will be ultimately affected by this whole CBA mess. Thus, having some quality depth and/or someone in the wings going into next season isn't totally unreasonable at LB.
So unlike previous years where we tried plugging holes or tearing down the whole wall via the draft, this year could be the year where more picks makes more sense to be selective. Some of this will be made a little easier via free agency. Yet, the draft is where our fortunes could be made. Of course, that is if there is a willing market, you're targeted players aren't there, and if you have the stones to weather the PR storm of trading down or out of the 1st round.

I don't know if a draft has passed that I wasn't a an of trading down & out of the 1st round...
I love top of the second round talent…reduced risk, less pressure for the incoming player, typically the 2nd or 3rd best prospect at a given position…with non-headline grabbing salary & a chip on their shoulder for not being in round 1. I wanna squad full of those guys, kind like the Patriots seem to want. Top of the 3rd and 4th seem to demonstrate good value as well. Players that fall just under some bar…seem to have more to prove and less contract leverage…I think that keeps them humble, coachable & hungry. Now if they ever do away with the silly drafted-yet-unproven rookie free-agent sweepstakes, then 1st round value may again be worth the risk. Until then, it seems best to trade down & out of the 1st (especially when you have multiple areas of need/depth and have a coaching squad that is worth anything)..
agree about the high 1st picks
NBA has the lottery, NFL has the fact that nobody wants the first pick to ensure nobody tanks games at the end of the season.*

Was it 2007?
Some of you old-timers might have to remind me. We did a SBNation Mock Draft, and we traded down like three times.
Oh yeah, here it is:

And then we took:
Joe Staley
Johnathon Wade (oops)
Jason Hill
Josh Gattis (hmmmm…)
Point being, I think there are a lot of us who like the idea of trading down. I do still fully believe we are in a talent acquisition phase of the team’s development. With holes at NT, OLB, S, CB, OG, OT, C, and RB, we have a ton of needs.

If those trades happened in real life
We probably wouldve traded out of the first round, gain extra picks and draft a cornerback. Like Brandon Flowers.

I like the possibilities at 20 in the 1st round
So, if the team doesn’t trade down I won’t be disappointed. If they trade down, it will blow my mock draft right up, as these trades usually happen at the last minute….
I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?
re: talent acquisition phase
I think the “one player away” trade up argument is a myth anyway.
I’m all for staying in this phase for the foreseeable future.
You can always use depth (see our laughable abundance of TE’s last year) and some players don’t work out.
Trade down every year you can.

The thing is
The MAIN reason there’s a lot of “trade down” people is because you have to automatically pay your high first round picks a lot of money. When you hit on them, it’s worth it. When they are David Carr, it’s not.
Picking from 20 though? The money wheel is a lot more favorable.

Yes!
That’s is why, the players available at 20 would have to be bad for the Texans to trade out, or someone good would have to have fallen for another team to want to trade up. Right now, I don’t see that happening. But, who knows. What player could fall that the Texans don’t want that other teams will….maybe one of the big two QBs, maybe WR Dez Bryant, maybe ILB Rolando McClain, maybe RB CJ Spiller….none of them likely. But, if Spiller was there at 20, wouldn’t the Texans jump on that? Why not McClain? Maybe the Texans take McClain and move Demeco to WLB or put McClain at WLB? I just see the 20 spot as being where the Texans want to be. I really do. There will be legitimate OTs at 20 and I think the Texans will want one of them instead of giving it up. I think they want one of the OTs more than the DTs that will be there. I think there are questions about all of the DTs that could be there. S Earl Thomas could be there. If someone wants to come up for Earl Thomas, I can see the Texans trading down a few spots and still getting one of the OTs they want.

Could be the next LT...comes with baggage, though
