Gary Kubiak Officially Signs Extension To Remain Head Coach Of Houston Texans

Although head coaching contracts are generally not worth the paper they're written on, Bob McNair moved from "close" to "done" in terms of officially extending Gary Kubiak's deal as head coach of your Houston Texans today. Interestingly, word is that Kubes actually left a year (and therefore money) on the table, opting for solidarity with his staff by making 2012, not 2013, the end of his new deal.

Comradery? Loyalty? Or is Kubes relying on a shadowy network of Mayan contacts who have assured him the world is in fact coming to an end on December 21, 2012, thus rendering a deal for 2013 utterly useless?

Shine on in the Comments below, BRB. Your thoughts on this development?

I hope the world doesn't end in 2012

That would mean we wouldn’t get to see the Texans become the first team to 3-peat at the Super Bowl in 2013.

Seriously though, it makes a lot more sense to have him under contract with his assistants. Plus, it’s still the NFL, so contracts aren’t guaranteed. Go forth, Gary, and prove you’re worth it.

I now hope to see a similar article in the near future where you replace the words “Gary Kubiak” and “Head Coach” with “DeMeco Ryans” and “Middle Linebacker.” A few days after that, it’ll read the same except with “Bernard Pollard” and “Strong Safety.”

Re: DeMeco and Pollard

I join you in your wish, though I believe Kerns would have me murdered if I attempted to post anything about Pollard getting an extension before he did. Pollard is Kerns’ property. Kerns even has a t-shirt proclaiming as much, I hear.

Looking forward to a day when being a Texans fan doesn't mean that April is the highlight of my season...

That is blasphemous!!!

I don’t want to see you post anything like that again Jimbo!!!! lol. But I am with the consensus PAY THEM RICK!!! I am gonna write it on my shoes and everything.

I hear a lot of Demeco Ryans is an avg. MLB, but I have to say the guy IS the LEADER of our D. if being an avg LB means you can provide leadership, and still rank high in tackles every season, I will take that Average LB any day. Pollard on the http://cdn3.sbnation.com/profile_images/195905/receiverchart_small.jpgother hand brings the kind of talent and “Shut the Fawk upness.” (Watch Schaub and Cushing Miced up!) we need present on our team. Now if only we can get a healthy uber-productive year from our D-line and coverage from our CBs we will dominate the NFL next season…

Oh BTW we get the cowgirls at home this season… Time to shut those southern oklahoma fans UP!!!

Does that apply to coaches? I know quite a few coaches are paying off coaches who they fired with years left on their contract …

by killtacular on Feb 2, 2010 9:03 PM CST up reply actions

ah, makes sense :)

Still makes me wonder what the motivation for this is: does McNair worry Kubiak will leave for some other job without the extension? Or is it to keep the assistants happy? Otherwise, why not wait to do this until sometime next season (giving yourself an out in case everything falls apart).

We’ll have to re-visit this thread in the future to see if it is or isn’t…..too soon to tell if it’s a mistake or a ill-timed move or McNair showing off his psychic skills.

by TexansDC on Feb 2, 2010 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

i will give kubes credit for making good draft picks and the trade for schauby.

but throughout the year we were a one half team. i’m not sure how it would be the players’ fault for kicking ass in the first half, then sucking in the second. a reason that they could suck is because of play calling. i have two problems with kubes’s mentality. whether if it would be letting off of the gas or just sticking with the same game plan after the first half are both negative things. i personally believe that he does not change the game plan at halftime much. i know that if what we are doing on offense is working then we should stick with it right? WRONG. the other team’s D will make adjustments and maybe kubes has failed to see that. i will give him one more year because we did get screwed at the goal line 2 times. assuming that we sign most of our key guys back, we should be better than last year’s team. in this situation i wish i that mcnair wasn’t our owner. he’s not a smart owner like leslie alexander (arguably the best owner in sports) is with the rockets. i think mcnair is sticking with kubiak because he is comfortable with him, not because he is the best coach for us. kubes has to learn to make half time adjustments whether if we are losing or winning. if he is letting of the gas, that is ridiculous. and he should be fired for that. i want a 60 minute coach, not a 30 minute one.

by Jordann on Feb 5, 2010 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

At some point, you have to let off the gas.

Otherwise Schaub is going to get murdered back there/make a game-losing turnover. That’s the issue with not having a running game; if we get to the second half with a lead, the only way we’re going to get first downs to sustain that lead is by passing. Not only is passing risky and more prone to turnovers, but also, we can’t afford to have our QB throwing 50+ passes per game.

Every coach in the league would try to play it safe in those scenarios. Keep in mind, this team is not used to playing with a lead. I’ve got faith that they’ll figure something out in the off-season.

I don't understand

What is the opportunity cost to not extending him? It’s not like he’s going to go take some other job after next year unless we extend him now. By not extending Kubiak, you have the option of cheaply firing him next year if everything goes to shit. If everything is good next year, extend him then. I don’t really understand.

by killtacular on Feb 2, 2010 9:01 PM CST reply actions

On the flipside if he does do well he will be more expensive to resign.

by Rip Jersey on Feb 2, 2010 10:27 PM CST up reply actions

ya

I suppose that could be true. I guess I just don’t remember many coaches not resigning with their team because of lack of money, and going someplace else. But you are right that it is probably cheaper to do now than later.

by killtacular on Feb 2, 2010 10:35 PM CST up reply actions

My guess

I don’t think McNair liked the media circus around Kub’s job status this year. By extending the contract he avoids the same circus next year (as long as we don’t tank early in the season). McNair seems like the type that prefers to avoid the spotlight when possible.

by Big T33 on Feb 3, 2010 7:34 AM CST up reply actions

Good insight man.

Didn’t look at it that way.

We dont even know the terms of the contract. For all we know, there’s a clause that if he doesn’t finish with a winning record or not make the playoffs next season; McNair can fire him without any repercussions.

by Jordann on Feb 3, 2010 9:46 AM CST up reply actions

ya

That is a good motivation for doing this now, and you are right it does sound like McNair’s style to avoid the spotlight.

True.

But there’s gotta be a reason why he moved from being a head coach to an offensive coordinator after two straight seasons of making the play offs.

I heard a radio guy...

I won’t mention his name, but he was on 610 between 10 and 11 this morning and he claimed that McNair said before last season that “Anything other than the playoffs is unacceptable.” And, the guy said it was well documented and he questioned what changed for McNair to back down from that statement. I don’t remember seeing McNair say that. Has anyone seen that quote?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Feb 3, 2010 11:35 AM CST reply actions

He said he'd "be disappointed" and fully expected to reach the playoffs:

http://www.chron.com/CDA/archives/archive.mpl?id=2009_4732027

McNair: disappointment = new contract ; unmet expectations = new contract

The true test in the life of a Texans fan is how gracefully you endure it.

by TexanKurt on Feb 3, 2010 2:30 PM CST up reply actions

That's a little much

Saying he’d be dissapointed if the team didn’t make the playoffs before the season started is not the same as saying he’d be dissappointed in the coach if the team didn’t make the playoffs. Alot of things happened during the course of the year that led to the team missing the playoffs such as injuries, missed FGs, RB fumbles, ect. Everytime McNair was approached about his feelings on Kubiak’s job, he deflected blame away from Kubiak saying that he never saw the team show up for a game unprepared and that the players need to make the plays they were brought here to make.

The notion that McNair was or would be unhappy with Kubiak if the team didn’t make the playoffs, pretty much all came from outsiders. Really, you’d probably be hard pressed to find an owner with a team currently with a losing record talk up his coach as much as McNair has done with Kubiak over the past few years during struggling time. If you don’t pay attention to what anyone else is saying but McNair, it’s hard to see that Kubiak’s job was ever really in serious jeapardy unless the team totally tanked to end the season and even then he’d probably just not get a contract extension and have to coach for his job next year.

by Bryan72076 on Feb 3, 2010 3:56 PM CST up reply actions

Kubiak is the best coach we have ever had, regardless of your opinion on his actual talent level.

Resigning him is the right thing to do. You can always fire him for a little extra money. It’s not like these guys make player-money.

At the end of the day, he has earned the right to continue to lead this team, and I was not in his camp starting the season.

I don't think there is a significant upgrade at coach out there

Not that I wouldn’t mind a Cowher or a Gruden or someone else with some bling.

But given the steps the Smithiak have taken over the past few years in personnel and the competitiveness in the team now, I do not see how bringing someone else in, having them strip back the team, have all the players re-learn how to play under the new coach.

I just think that it is just not worth hit i would take for a year or two.

We were competitive in 15 of 16 games last season. It is not a playoff season, but still, have we been able to say that before?

by distant_texans_fan on Feb 3, 2010 1:05 PM CST reply actions

Cowher - no.

Gruden – Oh HELL no.

I’m meh about Kubes as a coach but I’m not horribly disappointed that he’s been extended. We keep getting more talented, after all. Eventually we’ll reach the point where our talent level on defense outpaces our mediocre coordinator and we end up having a decent d.

Could be this year, depending on how we draft.
