Peppers, Smith, Okoye, Williams

So, given that we have already established the need for a D-lineman, we already have Antonio Smith coming to the DT position on occasion, and While we have Barwin, he isn't quite there yet.....

Does anyone else wonder if we are going to see the those four names on our starting line next year?

We could sign Peppers to a two or three year deal, put him opposite Super Mario, and watch them go nuts!!!  Its not a long term solution, and do we really want to spend more money on a free agent D-Lineman.  But am I the only person to think of this so far?  Or just the only one crazy even to share?

Once upon a time...

the Houston Texans could have (and should have) made Julius Peppers the 1st pick in franchise history.

Peppers wants to play in a 3-4 system (that’s the rumor). However, I would be THRILLED if Peppers and Mario were the DEs. Screw getting a DT.

In this scenario

We’d probably have to release Smith to keep close to the self-imposed cap.

That said, it’d assuredly get rid of Dunta. So that’s a plus.

Can’t say I’m against the idea. Might not be logical enough to work given how Barwin was pushing hard for time last year. But it’s fun to think about.

I say why not.

Pick up Peppers and trade out of the first round if possible for 2 reasons. 1. The talent we are talking about taking at 20th in the first round and 20th in the second is not that far apart (disclaimer – this assumes Williams is off the board at 20) and 2. This way you avoid paying any first round money to any player drafted.
Then you can start loading the boat with o-line, cb’s, rb’s and of course TE’s thoughout the remainder of the draft. I actually really like this.
Sign Pollard and Meco to long term deals, F- tag OD and resign D-rob on the cheap or let him walk if thinks he can do better somewhere else. Could Barwin work at WLB??? The guy is versitile and athletic so maybe you could get some competition going between him and Diles for the position. Just a thought……

Can't see Barwin in coverage....

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Feb 23, 2010 9:40 PM CST up reply actions

Diles/Adibi don't really cover either.

WLB comes out in passing situations for us.

That said, yea. He’s not really ideal for the role. I’d love to see us throw in some 3-4 action from time to time though, just for kicks. Obviously we have no NT for it, but Okoye could try out some 3-4 end, and Barwin-Diles-DeMeco-Cushing would be a nice 3-4 LB core. If only they’d be so creative…

by Nashmeister on Feb 23, 2010 10:54 PM CST up reply actions

which means

we are perpetually in the nickel against Paytun.

I think speed at WLB needs to be a priority so we can keep that damn TE of the colts from breakin records every time they play us.

Dunta's weightspeed was too low

by texanphil on Feb 23, 2010 11:43 PM CST up reply actions

You're not really going to be taking Cushing or Ryans off the field.

So really what you’re saying is that we need a linebacker who covers better so you can actually run the 4-3 instead of nickel…

Except the Texans already have that guy, and his name is Xavier Adibi, and they didn’t play him.

- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement | Twitter

by riversmccown on Feb 27, 2010 2:38 AM CST up reply actions

agree on Adibi

and that is what I am saying, yes.

Get Taylor Mays, make him a OLB for the Colts games. Tell him to follow Dallas Clark around and see what he eats.

Dunta's weightspeed was too low

by texanphil on Feb 27, 2010 9:56 AM CST up reply actions

I'd love to see a few changeups there too.

In fact, I would say that if Bush randomized maybe 15% of his playcalls, our defense would be much more effective regardless of the results. Get some new things for other teams to think about instead of letting the DB’s be sitting ducks.

- Rivers McCown, From Mom's Basement | Twitter

by riversmccown on Feb 27, 2010 2:37 AM CST up reply actions

There’s really no chance Barwin could play WLB… Maybe he could play a 3-4 SLB, but I don’t think he could even play a 4-3 SLB to be honest… In this scheme his best fit is where he is now, as a speed rushing end.

I’ve never really cared much for Peppers. Sure he makes some big plays, but he’s always been hot or cold as a player. He’s the kind of player who puts up alot of statistics and shows up on alot of highlight film, but when you add in all the plays he took off, he won’t really make your defense significantly better by himself. You’re right that teams can’t double both Peppers and Williams, but teams don’t have to double Peppers every time out anyway, especially if he’s going against an agile LT because after all this time he still doesn’t have much except for speed moves off the edge.

I’d trade down for sure if it’s possible and given that there was value in the trade down… I wouldn’t trade down just to trade down though, that wouldn’t make alot of sense. At #19 or 20, there’s a pretty good chance that Sean Weatherspoon is available, and if he is I think we should pick him regardless of any other need because he’s a guy with top 10 talent who’ll slide to the late 1st because he is limited to playing the 4-3 WLB role in the NFL. However, he is a perfect fit for the system we run, and that combined with him falling below where his talent level should have him drafted would make him an absolute steal for us with a #20 overall pick.

by Bryan72076 on Feb 23, 2010 9:41 PM CST up reply actions

Hot and cold

Whenever I see you use that phrase, it seems to be on someone who I think would improve the Texans. Does this mean I like inconsistency or does it mean you overvalue “steady” players?

I have to agree with that logic.

Any guy who has problems with work ethic is not worth the risk/money/headache. Plus, we’re not the kind of team who can handle the diva act. Take for instance the Patriots and Moss. They have the talent around the rest of the team to where if Moss does start dogging it (like suggested last season), then they don’t lose too much. If Peppers were to sign in Houston, then decide that he only wants to try every other down, we’re stuck. I would rather develop Barwin and have Smith holding that position opposite Williams.

Agreed

Too much money must be spent to get him, and the dude doesn’t even like football. He’s clearly one of those players who sees the game purely as a job and doesn’t understand that he gets many many millions to play football for a living. People have talked about Mario “disappearing” for short stretches, well Peppers needs a fucking helicopter and foot search party to find him sometimes.

He’s not Texans material.

by distant_texans_fan on Feb 24, 2010 2:25 PM CST up reply actions

Anytime

you can add a guy capable of 10-15 sacks….especially since you see Fivehead 2 times a year….you consider it. Even if Peppers is too expensive.

However…

If the Texans paid Peppers (as someone else said) then they can A) let Dunta walk B) trade back a bit to secure an extra pick and CB Brandon Ghee (much cheaper than the 19/20 pick) and C) put Peyton on his ass with a 4 man rush.

It’s just….a thought to pass the offseason.

by TexansDC on Feb 23, 2010 9:42 PM CST up reply actions

Since we're talking about dream scenarios

Packer fan here

Peppers wants to play in the 3-4. No, I am not interested in him. Anyhow, the reason for my post is this: instead of Peppers, how about Aaron Kampman? If we can’t reach a deal for Kampman, I’d love to see him in Houston opposite side of Mario Williams. That would be an intimidating defensive line. It would stink to see him go, but I wish him the best and would love to watch him play on a team with an already elite DE in Mario Williams.

I have heard his name mentioned

as the other premier DE that could hit the market. I imagine he’ll be a little cheaper than Peppers and it does fit in more with McNairs attitude towards Free Agents. (He likes to pick guys up for their second contract when they are still improving as players, rather than aging veterans looking the last big pay day)

as long as Smith

is helping us as an every down DT next to Okoye.

If that assumption is incorrect, its a waste of money, imo. Antonio had a good year last year at DE, and we’re not paying his contract to backup Kampman.

Kampman will be a lot less expensive than Peppers

The only red flag is that Kampman is coming off a season in which he tore his ACL. That is serious, but he is I believe ranked #3 in sacks in the last 5 seasons. He’s somewhere in that area I believe. Another thing about him is he is a great leader on and off the field. You will never have to worry about him getting into trouble.

Man if this happened though, I think I can firmly say that Houston would be my 2nd team. I like Houston right now, but adding Kampman would make me want to follow.

It’s something to think about though, you get a player a lot less expensive then Peppers and he puts his team in front of himself unlike Peppers. For example: we all knew that Kampman was not happy with our transition to the 3-4, but he kept his mouth shut and just played football. He never openly criticized the team for this move, so for that I have a lot of respect for him. I wish we could resign him, but I just don’t see it happening.

by Jabooty on Feb 26, 2010 9:54 AM CST up reply actions

Do. Not. Want.

Peppers doesn’t really want to play football all that much, fits better in a 3-4, would cost a metric shitload of money and strengthens the part of our line where we are relatively the strongest. An effective NT found in the draft will do more to free up Mario and whoever rushes the other edge and will therefore improve our pass rush significantly and for much less money.

He may not have as many sacks as Peppers next year, but Barwin will be pretty close I suspect, and he costs a fraction of what Peppers will command.

I'll eliminate you like I eliminate gluten from my diet.

Speaking of D-line

Corey Williams may be cut by the Browns because of his high salary. He excelled when he was part of Green Bay’s 4-3 defense and even though he’s a big guy (6’4", 320 lbs), he does pretty well rushing the passer. Anyone interested?
