DRAFT Q?: What 3 Upgrades (K aside) would've ==> the most W's this past season?

I know there are many lenses through which one can analyse the Texan draft needs for 2010...but the one I keep coming back to involves this question:  If we had a significant upgrade at 3 positions talent-wise this past season, which 3 upgrades would've translated to the most W's (from those six games where we were in it, but came up just short)?  Honestly, I might be missing something, but I am not coming up with Defensive positions.

Ok so Kicker is easy...take a flyer in the 6th or 7th if we see kicker gold...so let's set that aside...

Now its easy to say our offense is this team's strength, but I think improving the short-yardage running game is the single facet of our game that could have improved 2009 & would improve next year's record by the most Ws.  For years now, I have seen an inability to force the ball one single yard at will (when everyone knew we needed to)...and this failing has made a difference in every one of our losses (save perhaps the Jets).  We faced 3rd & 1 or 4th & goal in every contest...and will again next year especially should we make it to the playoffs...it is necessary for any team in the playoffs to sustain drives, eat clock, keep potent offenses (err Peyton) from having a chance to comeback, and of course, its just plain awesome stuffing it down someone  throat.

Its pure BS speculation, but my guess is shiney a new CB & DT & SAFETY probably would have netted this year's Texans a single additional win (maybe two) taking us to a respectable 10-6 & the playoffs.  BUT, my best BS speculation is that a couple versitile OLmen say one C/G,  one G/T and a SURE-HANDED short-yardage RB would have netted this year's team as many as 4 additional wins.

As such, I'd really like to see 3 of our top 4 rd picks to be a C/G, a G/T  & a gritty short-yardage back.  Perhaps pepper in a CB from the 2nd (where the mock value at least looks good) and a Kicker in the 6th and we've got a HUGE improvement in next years record.   Any thoughts?

If two of the three were versatile and all were talented and had a mean streak in them

I would be enthusiastic. I would still like a RB who can hold onto the damn rock and push forward between the Tackles for short yardage. I don’t want our staff to have to be so damn creative on 3rd & 2 in their redzone.

Echo on those picks!

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Feb 5, 2010 3:29 PM CST up reply actions

I'll go the entire LT LG C RG

We went 1-5 in the South. We gave up 12 (out of a total 25) sacks in those 6 games. We had 11 turnovers in those 6 games. I can’t say for certainity that it was due to the increased pressure, but I wouldn’t be wrong if I claimed that.

The lack of a running game also doesn’t help the lines case.

While I do want Dan Williams in round 1 (followed by the best available CB in round 2 and Baylor C JD Walton in round 3), I wouldn’t be mad if they went USC OT Charles Brown or Iowa OT Brian Bulaga in round 1. I can definitely see the need to improve the offensive line. If the Texans could somehow snag an extra 2nd round pick then the draft could look like this.

1 – OT
2 – CB
2 – G or C
3 – Whatever they didn’t take
4 – NT
5 – RB
6 – G
7 – K?

We come out with a good OT who either can play OG while adjusting to the league or force Duane Brown to guard…we have depth at G, and we pick up a C that could force Ragdoll to the bench. Our line could be significantly overhauled which could help the running backs and Schaub stay healthy.

by TexansDC on Feb 4, 2010 1:55 PM CST reply actions

As for what I would do

1st round, pick 20- NT Dan Williams

Trade TE Owen Daniels for a 2010 2nd Rounder and a 2011 conditional pick to Cleveland who needs some offensive weapons.

2nd round, pick 7 – CB Kyle Wilson
2nd round, pick 20- CB Parrish Cox
3rd round – C J.D. Walton
4th round – G Mitch Petrus
5th round – S Harry Coleman
5th round, conditional pick for Travis Johnson (not sure if it’s here or in the 6th) – P Zoltan Mesko
6th round- WR Marcus Easley
7th round – RB Lonyae Miller

There’s no K worth drafting and Turk’s unsigned so I took the Zoltan.

1 – NT (williams)
2 – CB (Cox/Wilson)
3 – OL (Whoever)
4 – RB (Gerhart? Dixon?)

6 – WR
6 – K
7 – LB

Someone needs to start a FA post

Start looking into possible FA, possible RFAs, and who the Texans might actually move on. For instance, if the Saints decide to keep Bush and Pierre Thomas, MIke Bell could become a FA. If he does, he should be a fit since he played under Dennison’s system in Denver. He’s a guy who can at least run between the tackles and not fumble the ball.

by theaxeeffect4311 on Feb 5, 2010 2:18 AM CST up reply actions

Mike Bell?

He’s a RFA. That requires compensation.

by TexansDC on Feb 5, 2010 2:26 AM CST up reply actions

UFA RBs...

Are pushing 30 and over. There’s no one out there that would improve the team.

http://walterfootball.com/freeagents.php

There’s a good list and rank of FAs with their status.

Thing I learned? This was OD’s 3rd ACL tear of his football career. I did not know that…it also makes me want to trade him while we can get something for him.

by TexansDC on Feb 5, 2010 2:33 AM CST up reply actions

RB is just one example

I brought up Mike Bell because he was with us at the start of the 2008 season then we cut him. Big mistake on our part because he was pretty consistent for the Saints this season and we could have used that when Slaton was fumbling. However, we could also look into FA NTs, CBs, and O-linemen. Plus, just because a player is RFA does not make them off-limits. It all depends on the tender the team puts on the player.

However, it does look like LT will be cut and the Texans should at least give him a look. He may not be what he used to be, but he still knows how to get it in at the goal line, great at pass blocking, and could be a good teacher for Slaton. Plus, he handles the ball pretty well.

I'm anti-RFA

I feel as if, 1-7, we can get quality players to fill a lot of needs. I wouldn’t want to take a flyer on some dude (because there really are no marquee names).

I don't think the question is who should we draft

But what positions would have helped us the most this past year had we the ability to improve production at those positions. I’d say…

  1. FS- After wilson went down, free safety was a major weakness for pretty much the entire season
  1. CB2- As much as we all appreciate Quinn playing as well as he did as a rookie, there were quite a few games where he was picked on constantly and it led to many a scoring drive against us.
  1. CB1- Robinson for the most part had a pretty solid year, but the perception was he really sucked it up, because when he screwed up, he screwed up royal. He didn’t just get beat, he got beat BAD.

I didn’t include offensive line positions because the offense worked pretty well even if it couldn’t run out of a paper bag. Our pass protection was pretty good, and the last few games of the year we did much better in run blocking. I just don’t think a better running game would have added that many more wins, we were still moving the football with the best of them. We didn’t have the best red zone offense, but this scheme hardly ever has good red zone offense. What killed us in my opinion was our inability to cover anybody. The corners looked pretty bad at times, but I think alot of that was poor safety help, corners just always look like the culprit whether they actually are or not… but I still can’t think of any other position that would have netted more wins with improvements than CBs after safety.

by Bryan72076 on Feb 4, 2010 3:43 PM CST reply actions

Or your real answer...

is defensive backs in general are the need.

FS may be weak, but I feel like corners would trump a FS. A FS roams about, but corners are responsible for someone.

by TexansDC on Feb 4, 2010 3:55 PM CST up reply actions

A good FS can help both CBs though.

If we had somebody with coverage skills and 4.30 time roaming around the secondary, I think it would really allow all of our CBs to play tight coverage, knowing they’ve got safety help up top if they get beat deep.

Also, I think Earl Thomas (assuming he’s available at #20) is significantly better than any FS who might be available around our pick in the 2nd, whereas there aren’t many CBs who warrant going in the late 1st/early 2nd right now.

It’ll all change a great deal by the time the draft comes around, but that’s the way I see it right now at least.

by Nashmeister on Feb 4, 2010 4:09 PM CST up reply actions

That makes a lot of sense.

I’d still take a CB over a FS though simply because of the fact that Dunta was worse than Eugene. On the whole, I agree that we need someone speedy in the secondary. I feel like once our DBs get behind that we’re done.

by TexansDC on Feb 4, 2010 4:27 PM CST up reply actions

I wasn't going into need.

I was answering the question asked in this thread, which was “If we had a significant upgrade at 3 positions talent-wise this past season, which 3 upgrades would’ve translated to the most W’s”. I don’t think safety is our biggest need this offseason, but I do feel it was the position that if improved on at starter would have netted us the most wins. I think if we had better FS, and both CBs, our defense would have been pretty stiff later in the season as Pollard and Cushing settled in, therefore would have given us more added wins than if we improved our rushing attack. Moving the football wasn’t a problem for us. You could say redzone scoring was, but I think that’s more a schematic thing than personnel. Because of our zone blocking scheme, we have Offensive linement who aren’t particularly suited for short yardage cram it down their throats type of offense, if we “improved” the O-line by getting linement that could do that, then we’d more than likely have inferior production on the line on every other down. We need to find a way to score in the red zone with this scheme, not play a completely different offense when we get within 10 yards of the goal line.

What did you win?

I didn’t even realize we were in competition. While I don’t usually worry about grammar much, when someone points it out, then i’m a little more aware of it for a while than i’d normally be.

That doesn’t change the fact that it’s totally assinine to point out flaws in others’ grammar in an informal forum.

Using quotes to take shots at someone, doesn’t change the fact that you’re taking shots at them. I wrote something that had nothing to do with you, in response to a comment that also had nothing to do with you. You decided my lack of paragraphs were too worrisome for you to even bother reading the post, but felt the need to tell me all about it?

It’s ammusing to me that you won’t admit to the animosity behind your own comments when it’s pretty evident to any who read them. It’s not as if anyone reading this (assuming anyone actually reads it) would think you were just giving innocent advice to help me with my poor penmanship. Why even bother with pretense?

Grammar can be used to describe an entire system of language, which would include paragraph structure. The dig about brevity was also a comment about my grammar, as if I had worded my sentences differently and shortened them, they’d be more concise.

“Grammar” involves all aspects of writing, so saying I need to be more concise and have more paragraphs is nitpicking over grammar.

Bryan — Try to think about it this way. If we (Nolander in this case) didn’t care at all about reading what your thoughts are on a subject, then there never would have been a suggestion such as this.

From my side of the fence, I approve of his suggestion that you utilize ye ’ol Enter-key now & again. I say this because I think you have some great points to make, and I often pass over your comments because my eyes burn enough due to staring at a monitor for work. No seriously, I have a job. Yes, one that pays and everything. Stop rolling your eyes, Jordann.

If you utilize paragraphs a bit more often, then it creates even more dialogue regarding your perspective and the topic being discussed. And that is always good for BRB.

Bryan, you’ve been around BRB for a while now….and if a grammar/paragraph suggestion is the worst “insult” that you have to endure, then you are still doing pretty damn good.

I think it’s logical in situations like this, that Thomas would either move up in projections or the other two would move down, or both. Because most people still like Williams, Thomas’ stock goes up significantly as he’s shown that he can play at the same level or higher than Williams as of now. If I haven’t seen or read anything about any of these NTs and just had the Senior Bowl to go from, i’d say Thomas was the best NT in the draft by leaps and bounds.

Apparently

Every Bills fan thinks we totally want to trade for Aaron Schobel(DE, pretty sure we have a few of those) and Kyle Williams(another Okoye type DT).

No thanks

If I had to go out and add another DE it’s Dwight Freeney or Julius Peppers. Actually, Julius Peppers is available…hmm.
