Super Bowl Prediction Thread
I'm told there's a football game on Sunday. It doesn't involve your Houston Texans, so forgive me for downplaying it. Consider this your official prediction thread for the Super Bowl. I'll get it going...my head says there's no way Peyton Manning allows the Colts to lose, but I'm rooting for the Saints. As you all know, I've never been accused of leading with my head. Saints 27, Colts 24.
Your turn: Let us know who you believe will emerge as champion of the universe on Sunday night via the poll, and then put your name on it (e.g., call the final score, MVP, and any other items of note) in the Comments below.

The Colts got lucky repeatedly this year. The Saints aren’t perfect, but they’ll find a way to win (man, I hope, anyways).

The Colts
Are apparently trying to injure every good player on their team. By Sunday Curtis Painter will be throwing bombs to Craphonso Thorpe in the big game.

arrrrgghhhhh
This Superbowl is the worst of the worst… Although my brother is a Tennessee Alum, and I’ve strolled down Peyton Ave every time I’ve been to Neyland to root for his alma mater, the Colts have owned us so its impossible to root for them … That being said, as a northern NY’er I’m fortunate enough to not be insulted on a daily basis by reading little Richard injustice, age unknown, but as an avid reader of the BRB I’m thinking that if Reggie K wins a Superbowl (although VY winning would be the worst case scenario), Mario might as well hang ’em up..
Put your name on it: Saints 34 Colts 31

Like him or not
It’s hard to argue against Peyton being one of the best qb’s of all time in my opinion. He is amazingly good.
I’m not sure I’m rooting for him, but gotta give him credit where it’s due.
I'll eliminate you like I eliminate gluten from my diet.

Can't deny his talent but
If he never wins another title, it’ll at least be arguable.

Saints..
will sell out to stop the pass, therefore Indy will have a big run or two, but the Saints will stay put and hit Manning as much as they can. Expect multiple RTP, cuz P. Mann is a protected man.
GO SAINTS!
I have to root for the Saints, they were part of my greatest sports day ever.
GO TEXANS!!!!

Colts win 38-17
Co-MVPs: Manning/Garcon
Garcon will have single coverage all game and the Saints really don’t have a very good defense at all except for the forced turnovers.

If your defense regularly forces turnovers like the Saints do I think it makes them pretty good personally.

Their defense ranked
20th in points scored against
25th in total yards against
22nd in first downs given up
20th in passing yards allowed
21st in rushing yards allowed
26th in rush avg. per attempt
2nd in turnovers
Honestly the turnovers makes them appear better than they really are, and tomorrow they’re playing against a team that doesn’t turn the ball over. If they can’t find a way to force Manning into turnovers, it’s going to get ugly fast as outside of turnever they’re not even mediocre defensively.
But to respond to your point, I really don’t agree. Even if you want to take a bottom line approach, it would be the points against stat that really mattered, getting the 2nd most turnovers in the league didn’t stop them from giving up more points than 19 other teams.
by Bryan72076 on Feb 6, 2010 7:02 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The Colts on the other hand who are seen to not have a great defense were
8th in points against
27th in first downs given up
14th in passing yards allowed
24th in rushing yards allowed
19th in rushing avg. per attempt
18th in turnovers
Neither team has a great defense, though if I had to count on one to stop someone, it would be the Colts over the Saints. The Colts have the ability to force the Saints to beat them on the ground, while the Saints’ best defense is their offense matching what their D gives up. They’re a one dimensional team playing against one of the best offenses in the game…, I don’t think it’ll even be close.

What those numbers don’t take into account are the number of points scored by their offense off of those turnovers, or by their defense off of those turnovers. It seemed to me throughout the year that their strategy of forcing turnovers helped them win games. You can rip their defense for not playing well against the vikings based on yardage etc, but when you manage to cuase as many turnovers as they did it didn’t matter.
I’m not saying they are great, but I think they are a more impactful defense then their 20th in points allowed would indicate.

At the end of the game
The only thing that really matters is the score. The defense’s ultimate goal is to stop the other team from scoring, and the Saints ranked 20th in the league at doing that. I don’t think any defensive coordinator is going to be happy with a defense that’s 20th in points against and 25th in yards allowed, regardless of how many turnovers they’ve forced.
And again, they’re now playing against a team known to protect the football very well. Their defense might not look like the 20th best defense in the league when they’re getting 2 1/2 turnovers a game going their way, but if they aren’t able to force Manning to make mistakes that’s exactly what they’re going to be. I don’t know about you, but i’m not going to bank on Manning and the Colts turning the ball over often enough to make up for the fact that they’re scoring on every other possession.
by Bryan72076 on Feb 7, 2010 1:26 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I never made a prediction that they were going to beat the Colts. I simply made the point that their defense forces a lot of turnovers and I believe that makes them pretty good.
You also didn’t disprove or even address my point about how all those turnovers have more then likely led to a lot of points scored by that offense of theirs.

I really don't know about this game
As much as I hate the Colts, I can’t go with the Saints cause Obama is backing them, & just like Kansas’ basketball team showed us, anything Obama backs is sure to fail.
I would challenge you to a battle of wits, but you appear to be unarmed.

I Picked The Saints
I assumed Freeney & Wayne would be out or hobbled. If they both play, and it looks like Wayne is definitely a go, I don’t think the Saints can pull this off.

Turnovers will be the key to the game (how many times have you heard that?)
As discussed above by Bryan72076, the Saints do not have a great defense…….they do not even have a good defense. The Vikes moved the ball up and down the field all game long, nearly doubling the Saints in total yardage. They put up 4 TD’s but they did not win because of TO’s. They put the ball on the turf 6 times, but other than the Farve-Peterson handoff fumble just before halftime, the Saints actively forced the rest of those fumbles. The Farve brain fart INT at the end of regulation of course was also a major factor. The way the Vikes were moving the ball on that last drive it seemed a certainty that the game would end with a FG by the Vikes, not the Saints.
So the $64K question is can the Saints force enough TO’s to keep the score close? Manning does not make bad throws. He does not take hits in the pocket. Both he and Farve bit the turf in the conference championship games when they saw unavoidable pressure coming. I see that as a smart, but very pussified move, and it denies the fans seeing one of the best parts of the game, a crunching QB sack. The Saints will not get multiple INT’s.
Can the Saints strip the ball away from the Colts receivers and RB’s? To me that is THE key to the game. Without the TO’s the Saints forced in the conference championship game we would be watching Farve-Manning. Thank god that did not happen. I am cheering for the Saints and hope they can deny Manning being deified as “one of the all time greatest QB’s”. Saints win a shootout 41-38.
It took the Astros 44 years to get to the Series, the Oilers-Texans are due to get to the big dance...Go Texans!!!!!

No way did I see the Saints winning with a +1 TO margin
BUT the 1 TO was huge. Correction, it was HUGE. The only turnover was THE key play in the game.
Congrats to the Saints. They earned this win big time.

Clark wins the MVP, if only because of his awesome name. And his number is Obama’s presidency number.

Saints win 31-28...
Back-and-forth scoring with the Saints kickin a FG to win it. So far in the playoffs, the Colts have faced defenses as good as the Saints, but not an offense anywhere close. The Saints on the other hand have played as good of offenses and defenses as the Colts. Again, no one pulls ahead for good and it turns out to be a nailbiter.

I might get some flack for this but.....
….I do not dislike the Colts, even though I’m a Texans fan. What’s not to like about Peyton Manning? He’s got game gifted by God, not to mention Daddy Arch, and he seems to be a humble guy. Every time somebody mentions his recods he says something to the effect of “I just feel humbled to be mentioned in the same breath as those players”.
So, BRB, don’t hate me, but I don’t hate the Colts. I think New Orleans will surprise people.
