Chester Taylor available?

Just read that Chester Taylor might be available.  I think he might be a good fit for us.  Don't think he has a fumbling problem and seems to be a explosive running back that has some power.  I think we would have a good dialog with the Vikiings and we could get him.  Frankly I am suprised they would let him go with the troubles AP has had this last year holding on to the football (sound familiar?).  Thoughts?

Texans 5 On 5: Week One

Why they will let him go...(He's a UFA)

He’s a 31 (in September) year old back-up.

Why does everyone throw his name out as if he’s the solution?

by TexansDC on Feb 9, 2010 6:03 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

My suggested solution (cause why not throw options out there?)

4th round pick on Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount, 7th round pick on Fresno State RB Lonyae Miller.

Foster/Blount/Miller with Slaton on the mend.

Worked pretty well for the Dodgers.

Until Torre realizes Martin needs more off days being a backup catcher for the dodgers is going to be a complete fruitless endeavor.

I think throwing names around is a good strategy

What about Kevin Faulk? Larry Johnson? or the other Adrian Peterson? They are all UFAs.

How about Eddie George

He used to play here. Solid veteran presence. Can hold on to the ball. I guess he’s good at blitz pick up.

I remember that Larry Johnson debate…

Honestly, if we need a power back: Blount’s a great option. He’s the 3rd best RB in this class (behind Spiller and Best), but that punch knocks him down to the mid-rounds. Kid’s paid for his mistake…why not pair him with Foster? The upside there is great.

by TexansDC on Feb 9, 2010 6:30 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I can see that happening.

This team should be made up of late round RBs. There is no reason to take one high. RBs have a short NFL life anyway, why not grab so many that it doesn’t matter if one goes down. Blount looked good in the Senior Bowl so I think he should be on the Texans’ radar. I wouldn’t mind it. I wouldn’t mind another fast back like Slaton either.

Depends on how you define "the solution".

If you’re looking for a versatile, established runner with sure hands and no history of injury to take 150-200 touches, he is indeed the solution.

If you want somebody to take 350 carries and rush for 1,500 yards… Well, you’re not going to find it. We’re talking about Chester Taylor because we’re thin and inexperienced at RB, and he’s most likely the best option for us in a fairly thin RB free-agent class.

I just don’t see how a 31 year old career back up is going to change the fact that our offensive line can’t run for crap.

It won't.

But not having to take a RB on the first day and being able to use those picks to address OL instead might.

And for the record, offensive lines don’t fumble.

Yeah

What’s the point in decreasing the time teams take each round if they are going to spread out the draft like that? However, I think this move is more for the actual front office personnel than the fans. Give them more to time to collect and evaluate after each chunk.

When you move to prime-time Thursday and prime-time Friday, it’s for TV ratings and dollars.

by TexansDC on Feb 10, 2010 1:22 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

I believe

He’s going to be an unrestricted free agent this year, so the only people we need to communicate with are Taylor and his agent.

I think it’d be a good idea, as long as he doesn’t cost us an arm and a leg. We have 3 very young backs on the roster if you count Johnson, who the coaches raved about untill he was put on IR. Bringing in a veteran as a safety valve in case they haven’t reached their potential as of next season seems like a good idea to me. Taylor is a solid back, he’s not an Adrian Peterson but he’s a good runner, has enough power to run inside, enough speed to run outside, and is an excellent reciever out of the backfield.

Alot of people don’t want to sign any back 30 years or over, and really that could help us get him at a lower price than he’s worth if we were interested in him. Most of his career he’s been a 3rd down back, not because he doesn’t have the ability to run full time but because he’s just happened to be on teams with awesome backfields… but because of that he doesn’t have near the mileage on his body that most backs his age do, so he can probably be effective much longer than most backs.

I don’t think he’s the solution, but he can fill the void for several years if needed while our young backs go through their growing pains or we find another young back to take their place. It would be unwise to bet the farm on a 30 year old back, but it would be just as silly to fill the roster full of backs with less than 3 years of NFL experience and pray that it won’t come back to haunt us during the season.

by Bryan72076 on Feb 9, 2010 6:06 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I'm kinda with you on this one

I don’t mind having a veteran presence, for sure. Taylor maybe doesn’t have the miles on him a normal 30+ yo RB normally does.

However, he is more of a slashing speed type, which we seem to have plenty of on the roster. I think I’d prefer a bigger back in the draft.

Plus, I still fully believe the onus is on the o-line, not the RBs.

A Texans fan. Really. No, I'm not kidding.
http://www.battleredblog.com

by bigfatdrunk on Feb 9, 2010 8:34 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

He is more of a slasher than banger for sure

But considering we’re almost exclusively a zone blocking team, it’s more important that a back can “slash” through the holes quickly as they won’t be open for long even if our line does their job to the T. It would be nice to have a back that can do that as well as put his shoulder down and run over LBs, but how many Adrian Petersons are there in the world?

In our offense a fast, agile back will perform better than a strong slow one. But besides that, Taylor isn’t Steve Slaton either, he is capable of running between the tackles competently if not spectacularly, plus his abilities in the passing game would help out alot if the run game struggled at times again.

The line needs some work...I would love to see it look like this in 2010

C. Brown – D. Brown – Walton – Caldwell – Winston

by TexansDC on Feb 9, 2010 11:52 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Which OT do you prefer?

Do you prefer Charles Brown or one of the other top OTs in this draft? I don’t really have a preference, but I’ve heard that Brown should go to a ZBS team. As much as I like Walton, why are the coaches set with him being RG and not at C?

by riversmccown on Feb 10, 2010 11:21 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Oh you didn't hear?

They’re signing Chris Brown to a five year deal and moving him to TE because he’s such a good blocker. Who would have guessed Chris Brown was our solution at TE so now we don’t have to draft one in the first round. I hope they guaranteed him for a lot of money too.

by theaxeeffect4311 on Feb 10, 2010 12:05 PM CST via mobile up reply actions   0 recs

I think we still need speed, to be honest.

It’s not guaranteed that Slaton comes back next year. Moats is probably gone. We’re left with Arian Foster (who runs a 40 slower than Mario Williams) and Jeremiah Johnson.

Chester Taylor is very well-rounded. Good speed, good size. I don’t think they’ll find anybody better in the 4th or 5th round, and I don’t want to see one of our valuable first-day picks used on a RB.

we will never draft this guy cuz for some reason we meaning the texan fiil like we are all about class and don’t want any trouble makers on our team just look at our team schuab looks dorky but has not been in trouble andre is low key and speak low mario is the same cushing can talk like he is smart but who knows. Point is "high character"

Doesn’t always mean “someone who’s never made mistakes”. Really good people do really stupid things sometimes, one or two bad decisions doesn’t make or break a person, it’s when those stupid mistakes are repetitive that the team needs to avoid them.

Oregon lost and a dude talked trashed to Blount. I’m not saying he was in the right to throw the punch, but he wasn’t doing it unprovoked.

Throwing a punch isn’t bad because he ended up losing his senior year. He knows that football can be taken away. He took his punishment and has said all the right things. At the Rose Bowl, Blount was so giddy to play. I think his suspension helped him become more mature which helps him in the long run.

He fucked up, and he has and will continue to pay for it. It was a one time incident that he seems honestly contrite for, and considering how far he is going to fall in the draft he is certainly worth taking a chance on.

I would love to see him in a Texans uniform.

I think he can be what we signed Stacey Mack and Chris Brown for. A short-yardage specialist and a Goal-Line Back.

by Jordann on Feb 10, 2010 12:32 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

FYI...

Tony Dungy has been working with Blount on those issues, so I would say that the likelihood of it happening again is at least somewhat diminished. Take that for what it’s worth.

If it came off as a dig on Blount

then I apologize.

I know im very sarcastic but I was being serious about that. I really would like to see him in a Texans uniform. I brought up Mack and C Brown because they were signed to do just that and they never did. I believe that Blount can step up and fill that position for us.

You say this like its a bad thing. Supporting the team is more than just win win win no matter what. Its about my kids being able to look up to these guys. Its about them taking their good fortune and helping out the community. If winning is all that matters to you, stick to playing madden.

by DaGoaT on Feb 11, 2010 7:30 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Pretty harsh there Goat...

I have kids too and I don’t mind telling them that someone made a mistake, paid a severe price for it but learned from it and became a better person because of it. It’s not a given that this is the case but by everything he has said and done since then you have to give him the benifit of the doubt. I think your off basis talking about taking good fortune and helping out in the community – not sure where that came from but equally wrong for you to imply that he wouldn’t or he would be a terrible person in our community. I would be more than happy if the Texans took him in the 4th and I actually think he would be a good fit.

We brought in 2 guys with attitude this year – H2O and Pollard and they made immediate impacts and gave our d a little bit of a swagger and I for one think we need a little more of that. I don’t think he is a cancer and I hope we give him a shot.

Confucius says "man who stands on toilet, high on pot".

by Bobobigbro on Feb 11, 2010 9:28 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Its one thing to have attitude. There are a lot of questions about who is really at fault for how things went down in KC with Pollard, and Cush has never had any major issues in the past.

In the case for Blount, I would be more then happy to see him get a second chance with the Texans. Its guys like Larry Johnson who have repeatedly shown themselves to be troublemakers(ie FOUR arrests for mistreating women) and shown themselves to be bad teammates.

www.manningface.com

by nolander on Feb 11, 2010 11:34 AM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Im not sure where I implied Blount wouldnt do things in the community? I was talking about how the players we have being good role models for my kids and taking their good financial fortunes and giving to the community as weighing heavily on my support as a fan just as much as talent.

As far as Im aware Pollard and Cushing dont have brushes with the law or poor sportsmanship. Having an aggressive attitude on the field of play is not the same thing as sucker punching a guy after the game on national tv. Now Im all for giving a guy a second chance if the price is good and he doesnt have a trend of bad behavior, Im just saying if Im looking at two guys with comparable talent and one had an issue like Blount, I would be more favorable to taking the other guy.

Now i like both of these guys we all know about johnson but really does he need to speak while running the ball. Dixon is a beast at rb 245lbs 6’1 really could have used him this year. does anybody know where these guys are mocked drafted at?

Dixon I've seen second round

I’d love to see us pick up Dixon. He is a big dude and pretty quick, especially for his size. Johnson I think is 6th or 7th from most of what I’ve seen.

Neither is really a great fit for the Texans

I don’t think either one will be able to get through holes in our line before they close… for the sake of getting along though i’d say Blount in this case. He brings about the same things to the table Dixon does but can be had in a lower round.

In this offense I think i’d rather have a fast and jittery back who’s too small than a big and powerfull back that’s too slow and not quick enough. The perfect back for us is one is a little bit of all, big and strong enough to break arm tackles but quick enough to get through the holes in our line quickly and the ability to make people miss in space. Bouncing back and forth between extremes isn’t really the best way to go about it.
