Community Mock Draft

Texans fans, over at Gang Green Nation (Jets blog), we are doing a community mock draft and I picked the Texans and would appreciate help making good selections.  Looking through posts started by rip jersey & riversmccown has given me a get start.  Seems like the fans want NT/OL/DB in the first two rounds. I'm curious how the team's front office thinks about the draft.  Do they tend towards best available or need?  If a stud player from a position with less need drops, do you think the team would select them?  I added a poll to get a global feel, but still would like to hear individual thoughts.  Thanks in advance for your help and best of luck in the upcoming season.

I would say there's a disconnect

between this community and the FO of the Texans. As it turns out, that’s a great thing.

The group wanted a RB high in the last draft, and specifically didn’t want Brian Cushing. We didn’t draft a RB at all, and Cush (thankfully) was the Texans first pick.

The majority here wants a space eating (cover) NT, but have also wanted that for at least a couple years, and all we got was a project in the fourth a few years ago.

I would say the FO looks for best player available over need. We have Mario and just signed a pricey free agent DE in Smith and went with a project DE in Connor Barwin in the second last year, over needs at DT, SS, FS, and RB2. As another example, we took two TEs last year in the 4th and 5th, again ignoring those same needs. Again, thankfully, the FO is smarter than the collective here, since we needed every one of those TEs on the roster last year.

This year, if free agency doesn’t bless the Texans with a CB1, I would assume that has to come early. I think the needs in order are CB, NT, OG/OT/OC (OL), RB, WLB.

I’m sure there are people on the fringes who assess our needs both last year and this year differently, but that’s the general opinion I get around here.

I'd agree with this statement.

I 100% believe a CB gets drafted within the 1st 2 rounds.

I believe it’s a combination of value and need.

"The group wanted a RB high in the last draft"

Huh?

texanphil is smart and I’m a retard.

Ditto that

I cannot recall the BRB community EVER wanting a RB as a high draft choice.

If the Treasury Secretary doesn't have to pay taxes, then why do I?

Last year specifically...

I remember the calls mainly being for Mathews Jr. over Cushing

probably wrong on high

we definitely wanted one in the draft, but high was incorrect, yes.

NJH

I think you have it right. Seems the consensus is saying NT/OL/DB in the first 2 rounds. It is all a matter of opinion. Can you give us a link to your Mock Draft so we can participate vicariously?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Rip Jersey – link below for the sign-up, nothing yet for the actual draft. The mods are going to evaluate the picks, but I’d enjoy the feedback from this site as well.

All, thanks for the info. One of my ideas with saying “best available” was Spiller, but good to know many feel he wouldn’t fit the zone blocking scheme and hence doesn’t have the same value.

I think you have to look at the trend of first round picks since 2006. Williams, Okoye, Brown, and then Cushing. All picks were at a position where the guy could be an immediate starter. So now you have to ask yourself what positions could a guy come in and start at right now. On the defense I see NT, WLB, CB. On offense after the Smith signing all I really see is a C/G and MAYBE running back(which I really dont see as likely). So when I look at this I think it comes down to the highest rated guy on their board between NT/WLB/CB. Personally I think it will be a corner back, but the Texans board never looks like the ‘experts’ mock boards and they have surprised us in the past. I know alot of mocks have us getting Earl Thomas but I question whether he would even start over WIlson in year one unless Wilson gets hurt again.

With the way you break it down, it really does seem more likely that we’d see Williams/Price, (maybe) Weatherspoon, or Haden/Wilson as the pick (or we’d trade back).

I really don’t see us adding a FS in round 1 or 2 due to Wilson.

by TexansDC on Mar 14, 2010 7:48 PM CDT up reply actions

Good logic, both of you.

Williams, Price, Weatherspoon, Haden, Wilson…then Thomas.

What if Spiller is there, though?

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

I dont think Spiller is the kind of runner we are looking for in the ZBS. I think best case scenario if he is there at 20 is to trade back with someone who really wants him.

A team like San Diego could be very interested.

Spiller could be quite the offensive tool, but trading back for extra picks (and to be slotted correctly for a CB) might be the best move (if Haden and Williams aren’t there).

by TexansDC on Mar 15, 2010 10:06 AM CDT up reply actions

It's my hope that we can use Spiller to trade down

With what the Chargers have on the roster right now that they consider RBs, I think they’ll give a lot to grab Spiller.

by theaxeeffect4311 on Mar 15, 2010 12:26 PM CDT up reply actions

I have to agree

Out of all the players that might fall to 20, Spiller is the most intriguing for a possible trade. Agree, San Diego is a logical partner. If Spiller is there and the Texans can’t make a trade, unless Dan Williams is also there, I say take Spiller.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

Awesome

Seriously

If spiller is available and we pick him instead of trading back I will be a sad clown.

same.

I’m just not that big on him for what we need as well.

Recs all around

for a solid trade-back scenario
