In the 2010 NFL Draft, with the 20th pick, the Texans draft...

via tnjn.com

I have been vocal in saying the Texans ought to draft O-line in the 1st round this year. My tune hasn't changed, but the notes are a little different. With the Wade Smith acquisition, I believe that Smithiak will consider the O-line to have been addressed in free agency. It's not perfect, but the interior O-line was a hole in the dike and Wade Smith is the finger. So, what does this mean to the Texans' draft strategy? It narrows their priorities.

Star-divide

I believe the Texans will now be targeting a DT or DB in the 1st round.

The Texans may look at their D-line and think, we are okay there. The D-line improved last year and gave us an opportunity to win some games. They were strong against the run. The D-line of Antonio Smith, Shaun Cody, Amobi Okoye, and Mario Williams is an awesome D-line (the Texans are thinking). We have confidence in them and with another year under their belt and the further development of Connor Barwin, the D-line is poised to flourish this year. The perceived weakness of this unit is an effective pass rush in the middle. Cody and Okoye are good against the run, but do not put pressure on the QB. The Texans should look to draft a player for this need.

They may look at their D-backfield and be thinking, this unit is also poised to flourish. We got rid of malcontent Dunta Robinson. If we return with a healthy Jacques Reeves and maturing Glover Quinn, supplemented by quick Brice McCain who received valuable experience in his rookie season; and, Bernard Pollard picks up where he left off and Eugene Wilson can stay on the field...well a big if; then this D-backfield could be a very good unit in 2010. While none of these players are going to the Pro Bowl based on their coverage skills, they are effective when healthy. Losing Dunta Robinson to free agency leaves an opening for a rookie player, since the Texans struck out in free agency. The Texans should have DB high on their need list.

With a solid DB draft board and many players pegged for the 2nd and 3rd rounds, it doesn't look like the 1st round is the place to grab that DB unless a player like CB Joe Haden inexplicably slides all the way down to 20. If that happens, all bets are off on other positions. Other DBs who mock drafters are putting on the Texans menu are FS Earl Thomas and CB Kyle Wilson. Both would fill Texans' needs. But, the depth of the DB board and the lack of depth for DTs after the 1st round may be what weighs out on where the Texans will go with their 1st pick.

So, it is my belief that the Texans will be looking for someone who will improve their interior D-line with the likes of DT Dan Williams or DT Brian Price in the 1st round. The Texans will be watching those two most closely. Dan Williams at 6'2", 325 is considered by some to be a pure NT for a 3-4 defense. I think the Texans would welcome him to the party in their 4-3. It has been said that he is a powerful bull-rusher who can collapse the pocket. Brian Price is built more in the mold of an Amobi Okoye and is considered a typical one-gap under-tackle and he can be overwhelmed by bigger O-linemen. But, it is said he has a high motor and doesn't take any plays off. I think he would a very good player for the Texans' system. Out of the two, we would probably like to see Williams. Depending on which mock draft you look at; one, both or neither are available at 20. I haven't put serious thought into Terrence Cody because he is a player that takes plays off and they already have that guy in Frank Okam.

Now my next theory on this draft. Out of the guys I mentioned as fitting the Texans' needs, I think at least one, two or more of them will be there at 20. If they aren't then something drastic would have happened at the top of the draft and a player I haven't mentioned would have fallen down the board. I couldn't begin to project who that would be, but as long as it wasn't a QB, WR or DE, I could see the Texans being interested in that guy. Maybe it's RB CJ Spiller or OLB Sean Weatherspoon? One thing I know...it won't be Tim Tebow.

Good stuff, Rip

I do think signing Smith has pushed interior OL down a few pegs. I really think all signs are pointing to a DT, CB, or trade in round 1.

If done right, the draft really could plug the few holes we have.

1 – DT Dan Williams/DT Brian Price (barring Haden or Spiller dropping to 20)
2 – CB Devin McCourty/CB Brandon Ghee
3 – RB Montario Hardesty
4 – OG Mike Johnson/OG Mitch Petrus
5 – FS Robert Johnson
6 – OLB Stevenson Sylvester
6 – WR Scott Long
7 – OT Dennis Landolt

I'm still anti-Brian Price

unless Frank/Kubes comes out and says “look, we are NEVER going to get a real NT because we want to run two UTs.” Then, I’d be happy with Brian as the roundest square peg to fit in that round hole.

Of course, the retardedness of such a statement might make me climb a clock tower and open fire, but that’s beside the point.

If Williams is gone and Price is there at 20

It will be interesting to see where Smithiak goes. Will they take an Earl Thomas or Kyle Wilson, because one or both should be there.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

It will be interesting

because if it’s not Williams or Thomas (or Haden) then I think they try their hardest to trade back. I can’t see them wanting to draft a Wilson at 20 when they could drop back and get him or McCourty.

Brian Price

=Peria Jerry last year, except Peria was actually older, also, a less talented version of Amobi Okoye.

great post

I don’t think Dan Williams will be there at 20.. with all the teams picking before us who plays a 3-4 in need of a nose.. Chiefs, Bills, Broncos, Dolphins and maybe Steelers..

I do think though, that Brian Price will be there at 20 and i think he’s a better pass rusher than Williams and he’s a pretty big guy at 303 and could possibly grow even bigger. And who know, maybe if we actually had 2 decent DTs next to each other it could generate some sort of pressure. I’d like Price at 20.

TexansDC – McCourty won’t be there when we pick in the 2nd round. He’s the number 3/4 cb almost everywhere.. we’d have to trade up in the 2nd to get him i think. Corners i think may be there when we pick in the second:

Chris Cook
Dominique Franks
Brandon Ghee
Patrick Robinson

but there will be a run at CB i think..

I know, sadly...

Any of those is fine except Chris Cook. He can hit, but he can’t cover. We had a guy like that here…no need to do it again.

Big fan

of Brandon Ghee. He would be my preference there. Franks was told that he was likely third-round material by the advisory board, but came out anyway and wasn’t all that impressive to my eyes at the combine. I’d take him if he were there in the third, I guess, but not in the second. I like Patrick Robinson, both as a value pick in the second and because he’s versatile and could handle KR duties if JJ is getting more time as an actual WR.

I hate Cook.

Here is where I wish I was inside the war room

To find out what Smithiak and Co. are thinking about….

With the 20th pick in the draft...

The Texans trade down (if Thomas/Spiller aren’t there). Then stock up on an extra 3rd or 4th.

They need a partner for that

so there has to be someone there, that another team has to have….I don’t see that happening. There are some good players there, but no one I would say that is a must have. If a player drops to the Texans who is not a QB, DE or WR, I think the Texans will snap that player up. There are so many DEs in the 1st round and I wouldn’t say any of them are “must haves.” Same with the QBs. If the teams that need a QB haven’t taken there guy in the first 10 picks, I don’t see them trading up to get him ala the Browns and Brady Quinn. WRs are so unpredictable. The only team I can think of that would consider trading up for a WR is the Raiders and for some reason, I don’t see them as trading partners.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

maybe one of the good tweeners will fall.. and a lot of 3-4 teams picks after us. Green Bay needs an OLB opposite Clay Matthews now that they’ve re-signed both their tackles.. and they could trade up to get maybe Kindle, Graham or who’d else might fall.. maybe Derrick Morgan or JPP falls.. maybe Spiller!

The Packers may have re-signed their OTs

But, Clifton is old….and their line still sucks. It would be big for them to get a guy like Iupati who slides into the middle or even an OT that starts at OG in his first year.

if Haden falls
let's say Seattle at #14. Would you trade up to get him? The value fits with our 3rd round pick + 3rd round in 2011 and of course #1 swapping.

I’d do it.

I don't think Seattly has the 14th pick anymore...

I think Denver has it now.

by Rip Jersey on Mar 15, 2010 11:13 PM CDT up reply actions

My mistake

It’s Seattle’s pick that they received from Denver. The Seahawks obtained the 14th choice from the Denver Broncos when they traded a 2nd round pick in 2009, the 37th player overall, in exchange for a first round pick in 2010. The Broncos selected defensive back Alphonso Smith of Wake Forest.

I vote no.

While I do think Haden is the best CB in the draft, I think this draft is extreamly deep at this position and you can find quality talent in rounds 2/3.

wonderlic

CJ Spiller scored a 10 of 50 in the wonderlic according to The National Football Post.

Good thing he don’t have to think a whole lot..

not a big fan of Spiller. I’d rather have Matthews, much better all around back. Does everything well, good every down back. But don’t see us going RB in the first. I might be on my own with this, but I’d like to see us draft a stud LT. Brown is good, but I think he would be a great LG. Move him inside, put Smith at C, resign Pitts put him at RG, and draft Brown out of USC and our oline becomes a strength.

A lot will agree with this move, except Smithiak won't do it

Here are his weaknesses
Weaknesses:
Strictly a two-down back
Hands of stone – very inconsistent catching the ball
Misses blocking assignments
Not nearly as athletic in games as measureables suggest
Doesn’t break many tackles
Lacks elusiveness to make defenders miss in open field
Had an extremely good offensive line against inferior competition
Durability concerns

Honestly, if he can’t catch nor can he block…I really don’t see him fitting in here.

by TexansDC on Mar 16, 2010 12:17 AM CDT up reply actions

I guess he is rising up more because of the measureables

and it looks like I was wrong that he has a fumbling problem. Oh well. I still don’t think he’ll be a choice, especially at 20.

Matthews

He is ok. I only saw him once and that was during the New Mexico Bowl against Wyoming. It was the first over time and Fresno had it first and goal at the one. Mathews got stopped from the one on first, second and fourth down (third was a failed QB sneak). Wyoming doesn’t have a great size on the d line and his inability to punch it in just reminded me of our problems this year. Between the 20’s he could help us but not where we really struggled this year and need the help.
