I think it's highly likely Ryan Mathews is far up the Chargers chart, if not the top player.

Our 20th pick is worth 850 points. The Chargers' 28th is worth 600, and their 40th is 500. I see the possibility of a match here. So, throwing this out there: theoretically, would you like to see us move down? And how, if at all, would this change our strategy?

Dwyer

might be their guy

but… with Alex Gibbs in Seattle.. that would make Dwyer a good fit in our system?

If you want to invest a high pick on a 2-down plodding back.

The Texans aren’t looking for some specialist, but a guy who can actually compete for the starting gig. Hardesty and Tate fit that mold for us.

Dwyer would be a decent power back, but we’ve got other needs that could be filled in the 1st 2 rounds (CB, DT, FS, even OG). Dwyer pairs better, at pick 60, with Justin Forsett.

Matthews pairs well with 3rd down specialist Sproles.

Hardesty or Tate could be legit starters here in Houston.

If all this Mathews nonsense was a smokescreen to trade down...

then great. Trade down grab Wilson or McCourty and do a happy dance at getting an extra pick.

I dunno if San Diego will trade up. They may be positioning themselves for Mathews and a NT in round 2.

by TexansDC on Mar 18, 2010 11:00 AM CDT reply actions

Well they lost their NT

Maybe they could grab one in round one

28 and 40 aren't too far apart

They’ll grab Mathews at 28 and get their choice of Cam Thomas or Terrence Cody at the 40 pick.

by TexansDC on Mar 18, 2010 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions

that is,

assuming WE don’t want Matthews. I’m in a disagreeance here. I hope Matthews IS on the Texans radar, goalline offense is a giant need, and the running game has been anemic. Matthews looks quick, smart, and very versatile. Would not mind one bit to see him rockin the steel blue and battle red.

by wiseonekms on Mar 18, 2010 10:57 PM CDT up reply actions

We do disagree

I assume we’ll fill in a much bigger hole.

Need clarification

I am sure I am missing something but I don’t know what trade you guys are talking about. Who did San Diego trade and what did they get?

their back up QB

40th pick

by Joe25 on Mar 18, 2010 10:03 PM CDT up reply actions

Found it... thanks

The Seattle Seahawks and San Diego Chargers have completed a trade that sends third-string Chargers quarterback Charlie Whitehurst to Seattle for draft picks.

Whitehurst

The Seahawks swapped the 40th pick in the second round with San Diego’s 60th pick and also will send the Chargers a third-round pick in the 2011 draft.

by wasteph on Mar 19, 2010 12:41 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think San Diego would trade up with us

Especially if you are talking their 28th and 40th pick… that is crazy. It would be super sweet for us but it won’t happen.

I could see them trading down with the Chargers for their 28th pick and one of their 3rd rounders, maybe.

I would think that with Darren Sproles still in San Diego, making big money… that San Diego would be better off to just take their alloted draft picks and improve their team without moving up.

by wasteph on Mar 18, 2010 9:46 PM CDT reply actions

agreed

although, i do think they would be willing to part ways w/ their 3rd and swap 20 w/ 28th. i don’t see them trading away the 2nd when it took the ravens a swap of their 1st and their 3rd to get flacco at 18.

maybe i’m in the minority here, but if ALL of the elite db’s (ie Berry, Earl, and Haden) are gone by the 20th pick…and matthews is available, i find this a no-brainer. Matthews is a big, brusing, 20-25 carry type rb who fits the system and would give us a stable of Matthews, Slaton, and Foster (kinda like how Dallas has Choice, Barber, and Jones). How is that not a responsible use of the 20th pick? Unless we can trade down and acquire some more picks, i see no reason for us to pass up on this guy. I like Dwyer as well, esepcially in the 2nd round, but I have a feeling he won’t be available, and their may be no takers at pick 20 to trade down….if that’s the case Matthews is a must pick imho.

by wiseonekms on Mar 18, 2010 10:54 PM CDT up reply actions

As far as San Diego and their issue with RBs

I would think they are looking at the RB draft situation in a similar way as the Texans. Why wouldn’t they be content with their current situation and be content to wait and see what comes to them? Why do they need to move up? I don’t see it.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Mar 19, 2010 9:20 AM CDT up reply actions

well one difference is we have some potential in both Slaton and Foster with a veteran guy like Moats here for depth. San Diego has a small 3rd down guy in Sproles and then….Marcus Mason. I think San Diego has a bigger need at RB than we do.

But answer my question

Why would the Chargers need to move up? At 28 and 40, they are sitting in a good spot to get the same RBs that we are all thinking about for the Texans. If they trade up, they will be losing a draft pick somewhere most likely in any scenario. That lowers their likelihood of filling more spots. I think this is a useless proposition to even think about. The Chargers won’t give up what they have. The 20th draft pick is no incentive when it comes to RB. The only time it might, is if Spiller falls to 20, and that is extremely unlikely. And, we won’t know that until the draft is underway and it would be a draft-day trade.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

by Rip Jersey on Mar 20, 2010 4:30 AM CDT up reply actions

They don''t

But I’d read somewhere they really want Mathews. Pancakes keeps reporting the Texans are going to go RB first, and it could motivate the Chargers to trade up, especially if they have extra picks. Purely speculation.

As you already know, I'm not buying Pancakes' sales pitch

I doubt the Chargers will either. Purely speculation and I might add, with a pinch of fantasy?…is that the right word? My mind isn’t working on 10 at this late hour.

I do enjoy his stories

But some of them, that I have heard four or five times are beginning to wear on me.

I went back and looked at what he said last year and he was calling for the Texans to take Brian Cushing in the 1st, and if I remember correctly, he may have mentioned Connor Barwin as a possibility in the 2nd round.

I suppose if all of the stars, moons and planets align it could be possible, but what are the chances of that?

If I remember Fresnos bowl game

Mathews had three carries on first and goal from the HALF yd line and failed to punch it in…. He did have 140 yds rushing, but this screams DONT TAKE HIM IN THE FIRST to me!

by AllenOU on Mar 19, 2010 10:12 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

weird, it screams get some linemen who block to me. Now if he fumbled it or tried to throw a halfback pass I would be with you.

Fresno State had a great line

The WAC doesn’t put a premium on stopping the run. Those teams spread ‘em out and throw. The defenses do the same. Fresno State had a huge line, a great line….and it’s easy to see why Mathews stats were so inflated.
